2009 Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon Quad Core or 2013 Mac Mini 2.66 Quad Core i7 ?

2009 Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon Quad Core or 2013 Mac Mini Server 2.66 Quad Core i7 ? I have a choice between these two for running Final Cut Pro X. Price is nearly the same.
The Mac Pro has a ePCI 512 display adapter, 16 GB RAM, more hard drive expansion and faster 1tb 7200 rpm conventional hard drive. FW 800.
The Mini Server has two 1 tb 5400 rpm conventional drives, 16 GB RAM and an integrated display adapter. Has thunderbolt and FW 800.
My primary concern is the performance of the processors. Does anyone happen to know how they compare in video editing?

This may give you some ideas.
There are some folks on this forum who report very saticfactory results editing on Minis.
Perhaps they will chime in with first hand experience (which I can't give).

  • Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon: dual graphic cards problem, caused by Firmware fault?

strange bug with Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon:
    I have two Displays, 20 and 23".
When both connected to the standard NVIDIA card in the Mac Pro, evreything is fine.
I ordered a second NVIDIA card wich I installed in slot 4, using 8 lanes for this card.
Now, when one display is connected to the standard card and the second display is connected to the second NVIDIA card, the screen of the display connected to the build in card (the 16 lanes card) does noet refresh correctly. You can not see what iMovie is displaying for example, iMovie screen is white and does not display what should be on screen.
Sometimes none of the main screen is refresehd (example: Safari content is not updated, while in fact it is!) but the mousecursor moves correctlyon screen.
Also third party software (like FotoMagico) is not updated on screen
Connecting both displays to one card and everything is fine!
A strange bug wich I guess is related to the Mac Pro firmware
I've tried the second NVIDIA card in all the PCI-E slots to see if this makes a difference, it does not.
I used the PCI-E configure tool to vhange the speed of the lanes for the PCI-E slots, also this makes no diffrence.
At this moment my second card is not usable.
This is a problem on all three Mac Pro's we tried this on (2.66 version, 2 machines with 1Gb RAM, 1 machine with 3Gb RAM), latest OS 10.4.7
Starting in safe mode makes no difference on either Mac Pro

Just to clarify what you have: both displays are Apple? 3rd party (Dell etc)? and the 2nd NVIDIA came from Apple, right? because you do need EFI-based video (and BIOS as well for it to work in XP).
What if you try just the 2nd card by itself? and if you attach both monitors to it, does it work normally then? Want to make sure it works by itself.
I would expect it is the drivers that need work.

Yesterday I updated my mac to System 10.9 and now I have a dialogue box in system preferences saying I need to update the NVIDIA CUDA drivers but the servers are unavailable. I download a driver from the site but the Mac would not open it. This system has an ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB graphics card. What do I need to do. Do I need a new Card?

Vista Ultimate 64-bit recognizes 8 cores. 32-bit recognizes one physical cpu.
I've had very little trouble in two years. And now I do like Windows 7 but also eager for the RC.
I've been using the latest Nvidia. There is a method to the madness of how to uninstall/delete and install graphics drivers, or madness in the method. The W7 drivers are easier.
Nope. Something else. More sensitive to disk errors. You aren't running a program to boost fans. Something.
And some AV software is more prone to causing trouble. But all you need is a good AV/malware program, and even Norton AV 2009 is acceptable, or Avast or one of the others.

  • I have a new Mac Pro.  I want to use my old Mac Pro as a storage drive for photos and old documents, linked to my new Mac Pro.  How do I set up the old computer?

I have a new Mac Pro.  I want to use my old Mac Pro as a storage drive for photos and old documents, linked to my new Mac Pro.  How do I set up the old computer?  Both computers have OS X10.9.3.  Currently they are connected by a Firewire 800 cable.

You certainly could keep the old Mac Pro in Firewire mode (hold down the T key on its keyboard as you boot) to show its drives on the new MP. This is basically as fast as putting the drives into a Firewire enclosure.
Or you could boot it normally and share its files over the network using the Sharing panel of System Preferences. If you turn on both File and Screen Sharing, you don't even need to have a monitor attached - you can do all administration using screen sharing. However, this method requires that you open all files over the network, which will be slower than the direct-connect method above, and may also not work with all applications.

  • I want to upgrade my Mac Pro video card. I am using a mac quad core 2.7 GHz 8 megs of ram and an ATI Radeon 3870. Where do I start?

I am using a mac pro with a 2.7 GHz processor 8 gigs of ram and a Radeon HD 3870 video card with 512 megs of vram.
I want to upgrade to 1 gig of vram if possible.
Can anyone tell me where I can begin looking, what brand to buy, and what options I have?
I want to be able to use the Element 3D plug in After Effects.
Also, would I need to upgrade my operating system?
    Thanks,
    Faucheux

Shop for them at the Apple Online Store. I would suggest the ATI 5770 or 5870 or one of the new Nvidia GTX models - 650 Ti, 660, or 680.
Note that unless your Mac Pro has PCIe 2.0 slots you should stick with the ATI 5770.

  • Hi I have just aquired a Mac Pro 2006, Dual Xeon 266, 3Gb RAM 360GB HD, I have tried to add another 2TB HD but for some reason it is not identified properly and will not erase

I have spoken to Apple tech, who suggested upgrading to Snow Leopard, but reading through the tech specs I believe my Mac Pro can support Lion OS, any thoughts on this matter?  I also added a 2Tb HD, which 10.4.1 the current OS on the machine, does not recognize properly.  Will Snow Leopard solve this problem? Or will I have to remove the 360Gb HD and Format/erase the 2T disk and set it up as the new Boot disk?  JackTar1957

  • Final Cut Pro 3-Mac Pro 3.2 Xeon

I'm trying to install my copy of FCP 3 onto my Mac Pro 3.2, and every time I try to launch it gives me the error "Final Cut Pro" requires a System ID file which is missing or Invalid. Please reinstall using the original CD that was used to install Final Cut Pro." I have done this several times, and re-booted, and the same error comes up. I want to but the upgrade to FCP STudio 2, but I want to find out what is happening with this first. Thanks.
    Brad

Thank you very much Jim. I suspected that was the case. I assume there is no problem buying the upgrade version ($699) as opposed to the full version ($1299). I have never launched FCP 3 on this machine, so I have never been able to enter the Serial Number. Just wanted to make sure before I spent the money. Again, thanks.

  • Mac Pro FireWire does not switch off even when Mac Pro is switched off

    Hi,
got my new Mac Pro with 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon last week!
Found out today, that the firewire connection both on the frontside as well on the backside
keeps beeing powered even if the Mac Pro is switched off!
Is this a new features as my old Mac Pro (2x2.0 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon) did not have this feature?
If yes, why is this so? For what is it good for?
Thanks for your comments? If you have the same new Mac Pro maybe you can check out and let me know if this feature is also on your Mac Pro seen.
    Thommy

    Hi,
called to the apple hotline and got informed that the so called "residual current" is normal at the MAC Pro. Sometimes the USB Ports sometimes the FireWire Ports keep been powered continously even the machine is switched off.
Apple told me further that I can use a connection plug board with a central switch to solve my issue.
I will close now the subject! Thanks veryone for all your help here!

  • Video card upgrades for Mac Pro 3.0Ghz quadcore, Video card upgrades for Mac Pro 3.0Ghz quadcore

Looking for advice on Mac Pro with a dying video card. This the early Xeon dual core 3.0Ghz with an ATI Radeon X1900. Maybe the Nvidia Quadro 4500. I know there is s Quadro 4800 which I don't know if will will work with this older Mac Pro. Links and advice is appreciated.

Both cards will work with your computer although that's not stated on Apple's website. I'm using a 5770 in a first generation Mac Pro and it works quite well. I can't get the best performance from it because my MP only has PCI Express 1.0 slots.

  • Mac Pro won't boot to disk array after Mac OS 10.6.8 combo update. Array two partition are there, just won't start off them anymore. Help, please

My 2009 Mac Pro with Highpoint RocketRAID 3522 would no longer boot of the disk array as it had before. Boots off internal HD (still running 10.6.2), sees the array in the Finder, both volumes there pass Disk Utility Repair Disk tests, they show up in System Preferences - Startup Disk. TechTool Pro 5.0.7 sees nothing wrong with the primary boot partition. (didn't try the clone still with 10.6.7) **** frustrating. Tried reinstalling latest firmware for card. Nothing reported by the drives in way of any failure. zapped the PRAM, tried booting with option key, it doesn't show the array but two copies of the internal HD. Running out of ideas. Any out there?

I am having the same problem with my HPT 4321.  After upgrade, wont boot.  Shows up everyone as bootable disk (even when holding option at startup) but Mac will not boot off it.  I installed a fresh 10.6.8 copy onto a usb drive and HPT drivers work so might just be something to do with the main drive being bootable.  To complicate things, the Snow Leopard DVD doesn't have the drivers to see the array so cannot use it for troubleshooting.  It will not start in safe mode. Downloaded combo updater to try and re-update but it doesn't let you install it on another drive.  HPT driver installer doesn't allow you to install on another drive so also can't re-install driver.  Only choice seems to be install OS on new disk and recreate everything from scratch, then SuperDuper back to HPT drives and hope that it was a corruption during the update but not sure that it will boot even after all that work.
Anyone have a working computer with 10.6.8 and booting off a Highpoint RAID card?

  • Mac Pro 3,1 Stuck on Grey screen for 1 min during boot

I have a Late 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 and have started experiencing a very slow boot up.   The computer gets stuck for over a minute on the initial gray screen after the first boot chime.  Once the apple logo finally appears the boot goes normally.  Once running it seems OK.  The shut down seems normal with a  grey screen for a few seconds with the "clock" logo.
    Symptom:
After the chime I see a blank gray screen for in excess of 1 minute, it used to last only a couple of seconds.
Once the dark grey Apple logo appears the boot goes at normal speed
I have a number of different hard drives with older systems and booting from each of then gives the problem - so it does not seem to be system/disc related
Two partitions (Mavericks and ML) are on SSD's installed on a Sonnet PCIe Card and showed the same problem as the spinning hard discs.
I tried: (following a trawl of the bb's etc)
I repaired permissions and repaired all discs for all my boot partitions (10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 and 10.9) using the appropriate Disc Utility
Zapping the Pram - this was very strange as I had to keep the cmd alt P R held down for around a minute before the second chime occurred, the time of the grey screen stays stuck
    Resetting the SMC
Booting in Verbose Safe Mode: Again I had to hold the Alt V down for a minute on the gray screen before the screen went black and the text appeared
I looked on the console log but could see nothing obvious, additionally from the verbose safe mode boot the text log seems to start from when the grey screen disappears. The time stamps show the boot finishing in well under the minute I wait.
Any suggestions you may have are very welcome.
    Regards
    Dave

Thanks The Hatter for that information.  The blank gray screen is now lasting 3 mins before the Apple appears.  When I restarted the system log is as below.  As  you can see there is just over a three minute gap between the shut down and the boot, indicating to me that it is not something in the system software after the boot but a problem at the very start.  It does look like it could be something to do with the hardware as you suggest.  I have verified all the discs with the disc utility and they report as OK and their SMART status is also OK.  I have disconnected the external drives with no change so I will now have to do a thorough check and systematically remove the internal ones but that will have to wait for the weekend.
I have Mavericks on the Samsung 840 Pro and ML on a Crucial SSD (Crucial_CT240M500SSD1 Media) on a PCIe card.  The Mavericks install I think was an upgrade, not a clean install done quite a while ago.  I only noticed the problem this week when I re-booted in an ML to run some software not compatible with Mavericks.  I have made a system back up as a precaution to an external disc just in case my main drive is dying!
There are some firmware updates for both the SSD discs that I have not applied these yet but I will leave them out of the mix until I have tried simplifying my configuration with a single disc.

  • Trying to connect my mac pro to a officejet 7500A printer having troubles, mac will not download it. what do i need to do?

What do I need to do to set up my officejet 7500A printer to my mac pro?

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • MAC PRO TO LGTV WITH WI-FI DIRECT. MAC SETTINGS?

My mac finds the TV but TV can't find Mac. What settings do I need on Mac and how do I set them.
I would like to connnect Mac to TV wirelessly.

    Hi Sabretooth04,
Thank for the link to the HP LaserJet Pro 300/400 Color User Guide. I have already downloaded the PDF of the User Guide and have it safely stored in the "Documents" folder on my main hard drive. I have made searches within the document looking for information about securing the wireless WiFi connection on the HP LaserJet Pro 300/400 Color. I have not found the answer I was looking for.
You directed me to page 43 in the HP LaserJet Pro 300/400 Color User Guide (document number c02663889). Unfortunetely those instructions are for installing a Windows wireless network. I do not have a Windows computer. I have an Apple iMac computer. I apologize for not being clear enough about the computer I'm using.
My Apple iMac shows me all the Wi-Fi networks that are within range of my Apple iMac. Most of the networks are password protected / secure / locked (meaning next to the name of the newtwork there is a padlock symbol) My HP 64 LaserJet 400 Color appears in the list of Wi-Fi networks and it is not secure or does not have a padlock symbol next to the name (HP 64 LaserJet 400 Color). This tells me that anyone within the range of the printer could wirelessly send a document to my printer to be printed. I don't kow why someone would want to do that but my experience is there are evil people that don't have anything better to do than cause disruption and mayhem and an unlocked printer is an invitation to send a 250 page document to my unsecured/not password protected/unlocked HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color Printer and use up all my paper and towner.
So I do I secure my HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color Printer with a password so someone cannot access the printer wirelessly and print a 250 page document when I'm not home?
    Thank you.

  • Just uploaded apps from iPhone to Mac Pro but i can't open apps on mac pro?

Just uploaded apps from iphone to Mac pro but i can't open the apps - Why?

    Hi richard915,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Do you mean that you transferred your purchases from the iPhone to your Mac pro?  You can also set your Mac's iTunes preferences to automatically download purchases made to it.  You'd have to check the specifics for the app that you are having an issue with, but some apps that are designed for the iPhone won't work on your Mac. Developers usually create two versions of their software.

  • Will this card work in 2008 Mac Pro? XFX Radeon HD 5770 850M 1GB DDR5 MINI HDMI DUAL DVI PCI-E (HD-577X-ZHL) (A)

Hi,  found, what looks like an interesting upgrade to my 2008 MacPro video.  This card works with Windows, UNIX and FreeBSD (the code from which is very much in MAc OSX)..  Anyone tried this card with success (or otherwise)?

Let's  assume you are running 10.8.3 as there is more support.
What did you have? what is your budget?
"work" can mean, there is no boot screen but once the system is loaded it does.
Will the output display ports work, it all  depends on how  close it is to the ATI reference design Apple uses.
Are you planning to flash it? there are site forums that can help recommend cards.
And if you work with CS6 and want to use Mercury Engine and have CUDA then you want nVidia GTX series.
I would see what Mac supported cards MacVidCards on ebay has.
