2009 Mac Pro 8-core shut off randomly, won't restart. Swapped processor board and HDD's into my other tower. Started fine and worked for about 10 minutes, then same thing. Powered off by itself and won't restart.

Both towers are 2009 models, one is 8-core, the other 4. I figured the problem was with the power supply, so I just stuck the guts from the 8-core into the 4-core. It booted up with no issues at all, didn't require any updates or anything. Firefox even restored my tabs. But after about 5-10 minutes, the machine shut off at random and won't start back up. The DIAG LED lights up one LED yellow when pressed, labelled "5V STBY". Same LED on both boards.
Any ideas? I've got two really expensive paper weights at the moment, and my AppleCare plan expired 3 months ago.

Dust VAC for dust bunnies
real issue can be thermal paste or lack or needing redone
dust clings to any ram or electronics or inside psu and graphic cards
motherboards both support dual processor?
thermal sensor readings from Hardware Monitor would be nice
unplugged is not enough to reset the SMC, power on button also, and every cableetc disconnected
try with one dimm too

Trying to copy ANY file from my MacBook Pro to an external hard drive spins for 45 minutes then fails. I hate this computer and WISH I never would have wasted my money. Any ideas? WD My Passport 2TB Drive, had to buy a program to make the POS read files. Copies that would take seconds from a Windows based machine never complete. I have to close the transfer or shut off the machine half the time. Worst computer I have EVER owned, crashes non-stop, constantly freezes, and seems like EVERY operation is more complicated with this thing. • Mac pro 8 core 3.1 randomly freezes after video card upgrade

    Hi,
I just installed an ATI 5770 as a video card upgrade, plugged my new LED cinema display 27 and everything seems to work fine.
Sometimes though, while working with Aperture I noticed the Mac Pro just freezes, although the mouse works, I cannot do anything and I'm forced to press and hold the power button for a reboot.
This happended randomly 5 or 6 times in a couple of weeks and only while working with Aperture.
Any thoughts? Anyone having the same issue?
    Thanks for your reply.
    Guido

    Running Lion or SL?
Tried holding Shift key down and do a safe boot after those freezes.
Use Disk Utility from another boot media to repair your drive.
Do you have enough RAM? is Aperture library on non-boot drive? Does it have 30% or more free? more is better. Same for the boot drive which sholdk be small and 50% free.
Corrupt library. Corrupt preferences (if there were none before, there likely are now after those hard restarts, to data files and to the disk directories).

  • Does 2009 Mac Pro quad core really only support 8GB ram?

    See:  https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4433#3
Does this mean that you cannot install more than 8GB of RAM?  Or does "maximum" mean that was the maximum you could order one with at the time?
If 8GB is the max, that's a pretty serious limitation, especially for a 3.5 year old machine.
Also, the amount of RAM it shipped with is 3GB.  Since there's no such thing as a 3GB or 1.5GB module that I can find, I guess I will need to replace the RAM that is there in its entirety.  I would very much like to install more than 8GB.  One of my applications specifies a minimum of 4GB.

Apple only recommends what they have tested themselves on currently-shipping machines.
Since they didn't SELL denser DIMMs, they did not bother to test them before that Mac was discontinued.
There are four slots, the last two of which are shared. You can install 8GB DIMMs (pairing is not necessary) for very reasonable amounts of money, often, but not always the old DIMMs can be retained if desired. You can also install 16GB DIMMs under certain restricted conditions if you do not mind the expense. This Mac-centric Vendor has done their homework on the issue:

    Hello jumanjet,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
I understand you are having issues adding payment information to your account.
If your account information does not match your credit card, you may get a message stating "The credit card was declined."
To expand on the above, your billing name or address may not match the address listed on your credit card statement. Any discrepancy in punctuation, abbreviation, or capitalization can cause errors, which might prevent you from purchasing from the iTunes Store. If you moved, or if your zip code changed recently, ask your credit card company to make sure their records are up to date and match exactly what you are entering as your billing information.

  • HT4199 Hi I have a iPad which works fine on my wireless router and a iPad mini which won't work all the time on my wireless router it's work for a minutes then stops, it won't work on my apps the loading icon just goes round, but the iPad works fine all t

I've even tried only having the iPad  mini on the router but that's not even worked. Safari works but the apps are the worst and its what I use most.

    Hi Friends,
I found the solution for this problem (because I faced it too): go to Settings>>General>>Reset>>Reset Internet Settings (the third option in IOS 6).
Five minutes later my iPhone 4S works fine again.
If the issue persists, forget the wifi connection, then sign in again.
    Hope it helps

  • Airplay and iTunes, works for 1 minute then stops

    I have
    iTunes 11.0.5.5
Airport Express 802.11g version number 6.3
Airport Express 802.11n version number 7.6.4
I have used Windows 8 to install a previous version of Utility in order to set up the older airport express as it wont work on mountain lion (thanks Apple)
it's now recognised and I can play music via the iPad, but when i try to do multi room via the PC, it initially didn't work at all, but i read about changing to just WPA2 which i did and that actually gave me multi room, until i tested it and turned it off and on a few times, it then stopped finding it through iTunes and telling me it was in use.
I actually thought I'd fixed it and could answer loads of the other support questions on here, but it looks like i'm in the same position.
that split second i had multi room - pure bliss
Can any one get me past this hurdle, I thought i was doing so well

    Hi benkeenan2005,
you could have a look at the "AirPlay Multiroom Player by WHAALE" iPad app which brings support for Multiroom audio on the iPad directly (without the need for a Mac or PC running).
Currently it supports playing iTunes music on up to 6 speakers simultaneously.
Please try the free App "AirPlay Speaker Tester" first to see if it is working with your current setup.
    regards

  • I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro.

I am having a problem with very slow start up after expanding RAM on my 2009 Mac Pro (8 Core 2.93GHz). When I run the Mac Pro with 2 x 2Gb RAM it takes 4 seconds before the gray screen, chime and spinning wheel appear. However when I expand the RAM to 20GB the grey screen and chimes appear after a long 20+ second black screen.
    The RAM modules are paored  2 x 4GB Crucial CT51272BA1339.M18FMR and  6 x 2GB SAMSUNG M391B5673FH0-CH9, all DDR3 ECC.
Reading articles on the internet, I thought it may be damaged RAM modules, but I have completed memtest and all are okay. I have tried changing the pairs around and if I use any paired 2 modules the Mac Pro starts normally, only when I try running more than 2 modules the delayed start up happens. (black screen 20 Seconds)
I also have tried PRAM and SMU resets after changing the RAM setups, and the issues always occurs when I have more than 2 modules. As you can see I have 6 SAMSUNG modules and even with identical modules the issue happens, when increasing the RAM to more than 2 modules.
The Mac Pro runs fine after the start up screen and can see all the modules, but has anyone else come across this issue, or have any ideas as to why my Mac Pro is taking 20 seconds to start up with 20 GB RAM?

Hi there. Thanks for your comments.
I have tried all the different combinations of RAM setup, and as stated in my initial topic, the Mac Pro boot up time only slows when I have more that 2 modules. Where I place these does not seem to make a difference.
I have taken the Mac Pro to an Apple Reseller technician yesterday and they where not able to find any RAM errors. Apparently the boot up time is within Apple's acceptable parameters for this set up.
Could anyone that is running a Mac Pro 2009 with more that 4 modules of RAM, please let me know if the boot up time is normal. ( the time it takes from pressing the power button to seeing the gray screen around 16 - 20 seconds)
Or is anyone else having the same issues?
    thanks for your responce

  • Upgrading Early 2009 Mac Pro to Yosemite

I need an upgrading for dummies tutorial   I want to upgrade some applications that I use and can not do that with Mountain Lion which is currently on my Early 2009 Mac Pro. (Processor 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon - Memory 12 GB - Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB - OSX 10.8.5). My monitor is a NEC MultiSync P221W and I use Spectraview II to calibrate. I also have an older Dell monitor attached that I only use for palettes, etc.
I have discovered I can not upgrade to Mavericks and will need to go to Yosemite. I am nervous about the process and undecided what is the best way to tackle this. I assume I will first need to do a full backup and do have a bootable drive that I can use. Can I then just install Yosemite or is it best to do a clean install? I have heard so many negative things about installing Yosemite that I am really uncertain of the best way to tackle this. I am particularly concerned about the reports of system slow down.I have an even older MacBook Pro that is also running Mountain Lion but I have no plans to attempt an upgrade on it. It has had problems since it was fairly new and right now I use an external keyboard and a mouse because using the track pad or keyboard on the laptop cause it to lock up. (Long story and multiple rebuilds during and after Apple Care). So at this point the only machine I am concerned about is the desktop. I use it mainly for Photoshop and Lightroom and Quicken. If someone can give me some advice I would be most appreciative. I am an older gal with casual computer knowledge, living out in the sticks and really have no one available for help. Thanks in advance

Depending on how hard you push your system, size of files you work with.

    Ciao.

  • My Early 2009 Mac Pro won't restart after installing Mavericks

I have installed Mavericks on my Early 2009 Mac Pro and all seemed to install just fine but when I restart the Mac then it won't get past a grey screen with Apple logo. It seems that it does get reasonabley far into the startup, it gets passed the grey screen with cricling progress thingmy under the Apple logo, then it flashes very quickly and after that it is a grey screen with the Apple logo and no further.
I did try installing Mavericks when it first came out and I had this problem so I just abandoned and reinstalled Mountain Lion from my Time Machine backup. However I thought that with Mavericks now at 9.1, maybe it would work okay this time but no change. However this time I do want to get it working because the lastest Final Cut Pro X requires Mavericks and I do a lot of video editing.
Here are the things I've tried which have made no difference:
Removed all peripherals, so that now nothing is plugged in except the original Apple Keyboard, my Apple trackpad and my Eizo monitor.
I tried starting it in Safe Boot mode but this made no difference.
I started it up in Recovery mode and it will start in Recovery mode. While in Recovery mode I checked the startup hard drive with Disk Utility, the drive is fine, as and I repaired disk permisions which made no difference.
    I zapped the PRAM.
I connected it to my MacBook Pro in Target Disk mode and used ProSoft's Drive Genius 3 to check over the startup hard drive again and check disk permissions and all is well.
    It still will not startup
I would be most grateful if someone could assist.

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 3
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 4
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 5
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 6
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 6.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 7
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 8
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 9
Repeat Step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 10
This step applies only to older Macs (not current models) that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery. Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a boot failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 11
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • Mac Pro Dual Core (pre 2009) - Leopard to Snow Leopard and Final Cut Pro 7

I have a pre 2009 Mac Pro running Leopard and Final Cut Pro 6. My question is should I upgrade to Snow Leopard, and Final Cut Pro 7? Both, neither, just one of them... and in what order?
I am afraid of some of the issues people have been discussing (one website even said with a non intel based system neither updates can be done, but I have Intel Xeon processor)
Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks kindly

Your macpro will run Snow Leopard and FCut 7 just fine. There are plenty of "whats new in Final Cut Pro" tutorials out there to research and learn whether the new things are useful to you. Snow Leopard...plenty have had issues with it. As always, it's best to have a full mirror backup before you update to Snow Leopard so if you do have problems you can go back easily. I'd definitely move to 10.5.8 if not SLeopard. I have a PCIe card that won't work with SL so I'm holding off till I install a new card. There are still some incompatibilties known so you may want to check Apple's list.

2009 Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon Quad Core or 2013 Mac Mini Server 2.66 Quad Core i7 ? I have a choice between these two for running Final Cut Pro X. Price is nearly the same.
The Mac Pro has a ePCI 512 display adapter, 16 GB RAM, more hard drive expansion and faster 1tb 7200 rpm conventional hard drive. FW 800.
The Mini Server has two 1 tb 5400 rpm conventional drives, 16 GB RAM and an integrated display adapter. Has thunderbolt and FW 800.
My primary concern is the performance of the processors. Does anyone happen to know how they compare in video editing?

This may give you some ideas.
There are some folks on this forum who report very saticfactory results editing on Minis.
Perhaps they will chime in with first hand experience (which I can't give).
