2009 Macbook shutting off randomly with over 50% of battery left

Recently my 2009 Macbook has started shutting off, with no warning and 50% or more of the battery remaining. The battery life has also dropped considerably. Is this a common problem? And why is it happening?

How many charge cycles does your battery have? If you are upwards of 300, then you could be getting close to the life of the battery, and it will demonstrate this behavior even though the reading shows better health. Check your System Profiler:
 > About This Mac > More Info >…
There is also an open source utility called Coconut Battery that you could download here:
http://www.coconut-flavour.com/
When the battery begins to die it  discharges sooner than it is able to activate the script "10%  remaining" notice.

  • My macbook shuts off randomly, how do I know what's causing this and prevent it from happening again?

My macbook shuts off and I kept a journal for it because mine's got complications.
    July 1, 2014 (Tuesday)
I spilled a cup of choclate milk on my keyboard, it was soaked! But my battery was drained so I know nothing had short out. So I turned it over and never tried to turn it on.
    July 2
I went to the nearest apple center and asked them to clean it for me. (I knew it wasn't a good idea to clean it myself) They put it in a plastic bag but I asked them to open it as soon as possible so I know what parts are affected. They told me they'd take a picture of the inside for me and go back after an hour. Milk was still inside everywhere so I asked them to take it in.
    July 8
I called to get an update on my mac and they said it wasn't economically practical to repair it because they recommended a full system replacement. I got depressed and accepted my Mac's fate. But what's annoying is I put my mac in on July 2 and they only tried to clean it in July 5 which makes me think that was the reason my mac was irreparable.
    July 9
I took my mac and tried to find another opinion but I showed the diagnostics from the apple store and they said they couldn't fix it. My parents were getting ready to buy a new one.
    July 13
I realized that my mac didn't have charge when milk spilled on it so I tried to charge it and BOOM IT OPENED. They keyboards were sticky and it takes a moment before my computer reacts to the trackpad but it works! Even all the keys works! But it doesn't charge.
After lunch, it was workingp perfectly and my batteries were at 30% charge! I was really happy!
(in the interval my mac works perfectly, it stays for normal 7 hours when battery is charged fully)
    However at July 19
There was no electricity for four days (A typhoon came in the Philippines) and my battery is about 7% so I went to the public market to get it charge while I wait for electricity. I charged it for about 3 hours and sideways because it was inside my backpack while it charged so noone will notice it. When I got home and opened my laptop, it shut off randomly after my desktop appeared after start up. So I was sad.
    July 20
I found a solution online to use the option-shift-power button my mac opened and worked normally!
    July 21
My computer was normal in the morning then in the afternoon it shut off again after I waked it up from sleep. Tried option-shift for about 3-5 times before it worked with varying intervals from 5-20 minutes each
    July 22
I get nervous when I use it but it worked perfectly I was even able to edit with Final-cut pro and HD clips.
    Wednesday
Worked perfectly in the morning but in the afternoon, after waking it up from sleep it won't turn on tried the option-shift then I tried resetting the SMC for about three times (my mac is a unibody) but it didn't turn on the whole evening.
    Today Thursday morning July 24
I tried to reset SMC first thing in the morning after the thing won't turn on. After about an hour, I tried to turn my mac on normally and it opened. So what I did is to back up all my files. (It took the whole afternoon) and at night I ran diagnostics (D during start up) and no threats were found
Haven't been experiencing the trouble, as of the moment I'm writing this Jul 25, Friday (12:13 AM) HK time Philippines.
So what I'm asking here is what do I do to make sure this doesn't occur anymore. I probably written a very detailed log. So what else (diagnostics and other) should I do to prevent this from happening again. School starts in August and I will need my laptop to work perfectly to let me go through college with less burden. Thank you and I hope you reply. Any more questions about details on my Mac will be answered

Get a new computer. Consider switching to regular milk, or even a light fruit juice.

  • Macbook shuts off randomly

I have a macbook that I bought from Apple in January/February 2007 and it is shutting off randomly (whether it is connected to a charger or using the battery).
I looked for a solution and there was a firmware update, but my macbook is updated and tells me that I don´t need that software.
    Solutions?

    HI,
    Try resetting the SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411

  • Iphone 6 keeps shutting off randomly with battery left

my iPhone 6 is up to date its on IOS 8.1,3 and it keeps randomly shutting off with plenty of battery left like 30 or 40% and it will just turn off. I restarted it and backed it up and it continues to happen i don't know what to do.

Try to set it back to factory settings, without using the latest backup, in case the backup contained corrupt data.

  • MacBook shuts off without power cord, even when battery is charged

I bought my MacBook in October. I've been treating it really delicately. But for some reason, it will not run without the power cord plugged in (as of yesterday morning).
If I pull it out, it shuts down. If I try to start it up without the cord, it shuts down. It gets about 2-3 seconds before it just shuts off. (It will run in sleep mode without the cord plugged in.)
And for a brief time yesterday evening, it worked without the cord plugged in.
This is my first Mac and I have no idea what is going on.

This is a recently common issue with Macbook Lith-ion batteries.
You have a defective battery, although AppleTech defines defective as a battery below 350 cycle counts. That's the lifetime of your $130 battery, which may average between 6-13 months depending on how you use it.
Some customers have had to buy 3 batteries in the past 2 years because AppleCare doesn't cover consumable items, eg. batteries.
check consumer comments at http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?fnode=h ome/shopmac/macaccessories/power&revw=MA561LL/A
I'm hoping Apple will realize that a $130 macbook battery with a 350 cycle count lifetime, doesn't live up to "Apple" standards. Lith-ion batteries are known to have a 2-3 year lifetime not 6-13 months.
Customers shouldn't have to purchase AppleCare only to realize they have to continuously purchase new batteries every 6-13 months.
This is truly a manufacturer defect in my personal opinion.

  • MacBook shut off

It has happen three times in the past two days. My MacBook shut off randomly. I don't know what is wrong with it. I need help.

Make sure the battery is charged if you are using it without the adapter connected to an outlet.
Check System Preferences > Energy Saver > Schedule
If none of the above applies, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

  • My macbook pro shuts off randomly?

So my MacBook Pro has shut itself down twice in the past two days.  It shuts off randomly, takes about 45-60 seconds before I can turn it back on, and when I turn back my date and time settings are way off (ie the most recent time it said that it was Monday, November something, 2012, at 4:02 pm, when it was really Wednesday January 21, 2015, and 5:25 pm).  I have a frayed charger cable, and it has been plugged in during both shutdowns.  I have a new one on its way, but I cannot stop using this one yet, because I am a college student and I need my laptop, and none of my friends/roommates has a MacBook with the proper charger for mine, so I can't use any of theirs.  Any explanations?

    Hello pinkpanda376,
For random shut off issues, I would take a look at resetting the SMC on your MacBook Pro as well as taking a look at the battery to make sure that it is still running normal on you. Look at the articles below for more information to get you started.

  • MacBook Air (Late 2010) keeps shutting off randomly, sometimes when computer is tilted or moved

    Hi all,
I have a Late 2010 13-inch MacBook Air. I've had it pretty much since they started selling them at the Apple Store, or maybe a few months afterward. For probably a few years I had only used it once in a while, since I had a Windows laptop for work. Since this past December I have exclusively been using my MacBook Air, I have since given away the Windows computer.
Recently it has started shutting off randomly while I'm using it. I've tried resetting the PVRAM and the thing that manages how the power/screen works (I forget what its called), and that hasn't worked. I'll try to turn it back on again after it has shut off, and it sometimes doesn't come back on unless I tilt it a little bit. Does anyone know what could be causing this issue? Is it something I can probably fix, or should I take it to the Apple Store? Thanks for any and all feedback.

Since the PRAM and SMC reset didn't work and your screen only seems to work when the screen is tilted at a specific angle, it might be a hardware problem. If you're near an Apple Store, you should make an appointment at the Genius Bar to have someone look at it: http://concierge.apple.com/reservation/us/en/techsupport/

  • Problems with a 3120 - shuts off randomly

    Hi there.
I've owned my Nokia 3120 for about 2 and a half years now, so I guess it may be getting a little long in the tooth, but I haven't had any problems with it. Recently however, it has begun shutting off randomly, possibly as a result of the odd bump and scrape it's taken through the years (I have a toddler, and toddlers love to throw things). Any advice on what could be happening to the phone, and if I'm probably better off getting a new phone?
    Allan.

Well, the plot has thickened on this particular little beastie. It hasn't shut off randomly in a bit - but I've noticed that if I try to write a text message 9/10 times it will freeze if I type more than about 15 characters and will stay like that a sec, go blank, and then return to the normal wallpaper screen as if nothing had happened with no backlight. It takes a sec for it to read the sim card, and then I can use my phone as normal, providing I don't want to text anyone.
I do not believe that the battery connections have anything to do with this problem, judging from the fact that I have swapped the battery and ensured that the pins connecting it to the phone are in the same order as the phone I swapped the battery from.
    Allan.

  • MacBook shuts down randomly

MacBook shuts down randomly while using or while sitting idle. It then needs a min before the power button seems to function. The charger will not start charging right away after the computer comes back on. I also notice the date and time goes back to 7:00am Jan 1st 2008. There is a dialog box that says it has been reset, but no reason why. I then have to re-enter all my password info. In most cases the time does return by it's self to the correct time and date after I go to change the time and date, but only when i go to change it, before doing that it stays the same. I did have one time where I was unable to change the time, it would not allow me. I had to restart the computer again to change the time and date. I have not seen anything on the forum that explain this issue. I am not sure if it is a virus either.

Mine has been doing this aswell. It started a few months ago with not waking up from Sleep mode after I closed the lid. It has gotten progressively worse- where it won't turn on for sometimes days on end. Holding the power button down to shut it off completely or to restart doesn't work. This happens when pugged in and not.
Most recently though, when I am able to get it to turn on, it will randomly shut down, or go to sleep and I can't get it to come out of it.
I bought this brand new just over a year ago. I shouldn't be having these problems!

  • Mac Pro keeps shutting off randomly

    Hey guys,
My Macbook Pro keeps shutting off randomly. Its been doing it for a few months now and I was finally able to restore it to factory settings to see if that would fix the problem but it hasnt. Sometimes it will shut off every five minutes, other times it will be maybe once an hour. I've noticed that it is more likely to shut off when I'm visiting youtube or watching a video/viewing a site with lots of pictures.
By "shutting off" I mean that the screen goes black and I have to hold down the power button until it completely turns off and then restart it.
When I turn my computer back on it sometimes has a reason for the problem, which I copied and pasted below:

    Kara436,
some 15-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pros are known to have a defect in their NVIDIA GPUs. Given the symptoms which you’d described, yours might have that defect also. Apple had a gratis servicing program for three years from the MacBook Pro’s date of purchase; they still offer the servicing, but it is no longer guaranteed to be gratis. I’d recommend that you make an appointment at your nearest Apple store or Apple-authorized service center, to have them run their Video System Test on your MacBook Pro, which will confirm whether or not its NVIDIA GPU has the defect.

  • My iphone shuts off randomly and the button is too sensitive. Like I don't even press the lock button and it shuts off. This happened after the 7.1 update. It's on the iphone 5.

My iphone shuts off randomly and the button is too sensitive. Like I don't even press the lock button and it shuts off. Also when my finger barely rubs over the lock button, it shuts off too. This happened after the 7.1 update. It's on the iphone 5. Someone help me. I just want to fix this. Maybe if it's possible I can disable the lock button.

The lock button does not turn OFF the iPhone. It will give you a screen with the option to turn OFF the iPhone. Possibly the battery is faulty. Make Genius reservation and take iPhone to Apple store for free battery diagnostic testing and evaluation.
