2009 MBA worth getting for Lion?

Hi,
I have a 17" Powerbook G4 that i will be migrating from.
I love the Powerbook, but alas, the features of Lion with all the multi touch gestures and mission control are compelling me to admit it is time to move on. expecially since the powerbook has now developed 7 verticle lines.
I am looking at the 2009 2.13GHz 13" model.  2GB RAM and 128GB SSD.  As these can be had for pretty cheap now!
I read that the only gesture it doesn't support is the 3 finger dragging.
I want to know how the lion experience is on this model.
Please let me know your results, is it worth getting for Lion?
If not, which older model notebook will give most of the features and a good user experience?

I have that same model and to be honest it's just about enough for general use.
It all depends of what you're looking for. If you want it for most general tasks it will be ok. For heavy work, photo or video editing or anything that involves heavy multitasking (2gb of ram is barely enough on lion) I would recommend you to go for a 2.4ghz core 2 duo macbook pro or aluminum macbook (2008 model) since macbook airs can't have their ram upgraded.
Another thing to take into account is that you won't get 5 hours of battery life on lion. You'll get 4 if the battery is healthy using wifi browsing the web.
Just my 2 cents

Can you really tell the difference with the i7 and the i5?
Only by comparing the two side-by-side. You are not likely to notice any difference otherwise.
The reason for recommending those upgrades is that neither one can be changed later. I'd say 4 GB is sufficient but merely so. More RAM makes a Mac more likely to be compatible with future OS upgrades. 4 GB will certainly be enough for the time being though.
The MBA's flash memory tends to mask the effects of too little RAM, meaning a 4 GB Mac with a spinning hard disk may appear to bog down under high memory demands, whereas a 4 GB MBA will not.

  • Read all the hype, but is Lion really worth getting unless you need to link up several devices???

Read all the hype, but is Lion really worth getting unless you need to link up several devices??  e.g. is it worthwhile for a standalone iMac??

There's a million places on the 'net where you can find opinons on that (have a look here, for example http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/08/01/os-x-lion-10-7-%E2%80%94-the-jurys-verdict / ) and at least several long running threads on this forum too dealing with various opinions.
As for me, I've reverted to Snow Leopard.

  • Is it worth getting the update for my Mac

I have a Mac Desktop which doesn't have the swipe options that the Lion update has? Is it worth buying for someone who has a Mac desktop computer with wireless mouse?

I like the "gestures" ... 1 finger move the mouse, 2 finger scroll, 4 finger "select running application".  You would want the "Wireless Trackpad" to get the gestures, though.
But Lion is a new world.  No install media, but a "Recovery Partition" that must be protected for disaster recovery.
And not everyone is happy with Lion.  I have no opinion good or bad because I do not use it, but the opinions range from "get it off my machine NOW!" to "I love it".
In the alternate, Snow Leopard has lesser requirements that Lion, and has "gestures".  Staying at SL is a good plateau to stay, since it still supports Rosetta to allow your PPC applcations (Office 2004, for example).  Many are quite happy to stay at SL until something better comes along.
For the benefit of others who want to provide input, you should tell us:
    Current model of Mac
    Memory amount
    Current OSX version
The path you take to Lion depends on where you are now.

High Point RocketU Quad USB 3.0 for Mac is working great for me. Had an issue with CD/DVD Drive which was resolved with most current driver downloaded from the support site.
Running Moutain Lion on Early 2009, mirroring two Seagate Go Flex 2TB USB 3.0 Drives. Installed in Slot 4.
Using it primarily with VMWare Fusion for Virtual Drives. Windows, Unbuntu and other OS running really well.
HPT Support was responsive and very helpfull using the WEB Portal under the product page.
I have some comments and a suggestion:
Have you tried your setup with a SD/CF combo card reader (like the Lexar or Kingston FCR-H63)? Does the card appear on the desktop when first plugged in?
Did you need to fool around with any kind of power issues in installing this card in the x4 PCIe slot of the MacPro?
Suggestion. Have you tried one of the fixed in this article to cure the BT issues in MacPro 3,1?
    Good luck.

  • HT1338 How do I get the Lion update for the HP Photosmart 3210 All in One Printer?  The auto software update says none are available, while HP says one is available.

I just installed LION and no Power PC Apps work.
HP says there are updates for Lion from MAC APP store for the HP 3210 PhotoSmart All in Printer and provided instructions.
I followed these but no updates were visible or installed.  Any idea why?
Is there a place where I can look at Apple for an update?
If no update is available, can anyone recommend a good flatbed scanner for under $400 that works with Lion?

    Hi,
The drivers do available from Apple and your Mac may fails from getting them due to any connectivity or installed software issue.
First make sure you don't have any previous OS drivers installed:
Open Finder, then click Go > Computer and select the active volume of your OS.
(If have couple and not sure which one is correct, click the Apple icon > About This Mac.)
Open Library\Printers and move the HP folder to the trash.
Enter into PPDs\Contents\Resources, search for 3200 in that folder and move the results files.
Reboot your Mac, ensure the printer is turned on, in Ready state and directly connected to your Mac.
Enter Print & Scan, click the Plus sign and you shoud see your printer listed.. select it and click Install.
If no printers appears at all there is a connectivity issue.. ensure it is directly connected and not through any USB hub or adaptor, the cable is not longer than 2m length.. otherwise try a new USB cable.
If the printer appears but stil cannot locate drivers for yoru printer download and install the package below and then try adding the printer again:

I do not have a high speed internet connection. How can I get Mountain Lion on a disk for install on my 24" Imac?

As long as you use your Apple ID to purchase it, I don't see why they wouldn't let you download the installer on one of their Macs and put it on a pocket drive.
Or, a friend with a high speed connection?
I agree with you about the delivery method, just trying to help you get what you want.

  • How do I get the download for Lion OS on my iMac if I don't have the App Store app?

I stopped by the Apple Store and they told me that they can't sell me Lion OS in the store.  Since I have an older iMac with out the App store App, they said that I need to contact Apple Support.  But do I have to do that via phone or can I somehow email them?

What you need is to get (buy and install) Mac OS Snow Leopard first; that includes the app store. After you install and update it, then you can launch the app store and buy/download/install Lion. Now, how old is your machine? Here are the requirements for Lion:

You will also need a minimum 2 GB RAM, but you really should have a minimum of 4 GB to get good performance.

Water damage isn't covered by warranty, but you could always purchase a refurbished device from Apple.

Even from Apple?  >  Java for OS X Lion Update 1
Restart your Mac before trying to download the file.
Do you have anti virus software installed or a program like LIttle Snitch?
If you are using Safari to download files, go to the Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
If that doesn't help, back to the menu bar, click Safari > Reset Safari. Select the top 5 boxes then click Reset.
If you still can't download the Java file, go to ~ / Library / Caches / com.apple.Safari
Move the Cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash and restart your Mac. Try downloading that file again.
If it still won't download without that dialog, go to ~/Library/Safari. Move the Downloads.plist file from the Safari folder to the Trash.
    Try again.
~ (Tilde) character represents the Home folder.
For Lion:   To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library
