2010 27in imac screen failure

my 2010 27 in imac screen has failed, right half of screen grey shadow, dark, i note that this has been a problem in the past, seems that apple ireland are not concerned? any opinions or suggestions? seems that there are major reliability issues with imac
extremely disappointed with product and apple support.

Your are missing the point. Yes, there will be the occasional Mac that has a display failure.. Yes, there will be a number of LCD displays that fail out of the millions of Macs that are assembled with LCD displays. And yes, techs will be seeing those occasional display failures over the wide array of Mac models upon which they work. But there are a number of companies that make LCD displays for Apple with the various Mac models that exist. And sometimes there are different companies making the displays for the same Mac model. These are the random, occasional display failures that can be expected with every computer manufacturer who assembles massive numbers of computers; Apple, Toshiba, Dell, Sony and on and on.
But the point is that the link that I gave you points to a consistent mass failure of displays on the same iMac model, assembled in the same factory, over the same time period with displays from the same manufacturer. That doesn't exist for your iMac. If it did we would see folks posting about it here in large numbers, just as we did back in 2006 and 2007, which we are not.

  • IMac Screen Failure

    Hey,
I was just wondering if any of you are experiencing screen failures as noted in the link below? If so, is it the aluminum iMacs, or is it the white ones?

    Thanks!!

    Hi autiger
Which iMac do you have and are you having any display issues?
I don't believe it can be jinxed, so I'll do a little bragging here. My 17" Early Core Duo w/Apple Care purchased Jan. 21 2006 is great and has no gradient light/dark, no dead pixels and only a very very small backlight bleed. The sRGB and Adobe RGB (1998) profiles were OK, but the display seamed a little washed out. After more than a few tries, and some good advice from Barbara B and others here I was able to set a new profile that is much richer than any of the factory supplied profiles.
All display manufactures and computer system will have there share of issues, some more that others. I have had more than a few Apple's over the last 20+ years without a single hardware problem. I do have to admit though, that with the all-in-one Intel I bought Apple Care for the first time ever???

  • 27in iMac screen - many dead pixels - need advice!

So I took my 2010 iMac in to get the screen fixed (had greyish smudges behind the glass), and they fixed it without a problem. So I picked up my iMac a few hours ago and as soon as I turn it on I notice 7 dead/stuck pixels (so far). I'm still under apple care until mid-september. Any advice on what I should do to get this fixed? Thanks

Thanks; just wanted to know if it was the same one I had a problem with some years back (and it's not since Bridgeport hasn't been there all that long). In any case, good luck tomorrow - this should not happen. I've learned to have the person accepting it make a note of the condition the computer is in and have taken pics of it. I know that there are some excellent AASPs in that area and one of them does housecalls (free with Applecare) - you can check with Apple if you should need a repair in the future.

  • 24" iMac screen failure

In the past few weeks the screen has gone black while using. You can still see a bit of a light behind it so the machine isn't turning itself off, just the video going to black. A few times we even got a red screen with vertical black lines, but now it just goes black. Rebooting with the power button gets us back up and it goes fine for a day or so before it does it again.
Apple store "Genius" says it might be $185 video chip, but much more likely $600+ video display. Any ideas out there?
BTW, bought machine and 6/08, hard drive failed 7/09 which cost $300 to replace, mouse and keyboard have both also been replaced. I love my MAC, but finding a hard time buying into the argument that they are better built than the average PC. This thing is a money pit.

The Genius is right, it could be either, they will not know until they physically check it out. Have you run the Apple Hardware Test on the iMac's original install disk?
There are millions of Macs out there that never have an issue and run for years, because generally they are made well. Occasionally there is one that has a problem. And of course you know that Apple Care would have covered all of this for about half what you paid for the HDD, until the 3rd purchase anniversary in 6/11.

  • Anybody gotten a 27in iMac screen cover from Amazon?

I was looking to get one and think they look good but was just wondering if anyone else has gotten them before?  I wanted to see how functional they are and if they clean good too.  I saw the one that is sold by Panel Pros is cheaper and has gotten good reviews but I just thought I'd ask here as well.  Thanks!

I'd start with Apple. They are supposed to send a repairman to your house if you have AppleCare with a desktop and live within 50 miles of an Authorized Apple Service Provider. The only possible rub is that you bought it at Best Buy, but Apple will guide you in that as well.

  • 2010 MBP 13" screen failure

Hi - realise this question has been asked in numerous formats, but I'm struggling to find a situation that exactly mirrors mine, so please forgive the repeat...
My MBP screen went black last night (while I was using it), and no amount of reboots, NVRAM resets, etc fixed it. This morning, I plugged it into the TV via HDMI, which seems to work fine, but the LCD remains dark and under Graphics/Displays, it says "No display detected".
Seems the LCD has gone awol - anyone know why this might be? Seems to me it could be a dodgy connector, but could it be something much worse (and more expensive)? As you may be able to tell, I am a complete idiot when it comes to these things...
    Any suggestions gratefully received.
    Thanks

    CharmlessNurk,
yes, it could be either a dodgy connector or a dead LCD. If you’re uncomfortable with mucking about the insides of your MacBook Pro, the best option would be to make an appointment at your closest Apple store to have them run their diagnostics, to see if they can determine what needs to be sorted out.

  • I would like to extend the screen from my circa 2013 27in iMAC with thunderbolt onto my circa late 2006 imac using the DVI port on that iMAC. Is this possible? If not is there another approach I can use?

I would like to extend the screen from my circa 2013 27in iMAC with thunderbolt onto my circa late 2006 imac using the DVI port on that iMAC. Is this possible? If not is there another approach I can use? My 2006 iMAC is showing it's age but I figure I can use it as just a monitor just fine. Assuming I can connect the two together.

That older iMac isn't designed to receive video input through the mini-DVI connection. Only certain newer iMacs are able to be used as displays.
Your only options are to use something like ScreenRecycler mentioned above.

  • IMac from 2010: sometimes the screen stays black, only restoring from backup helps.

    hello there dear community,
i have been a great fan of my imac and macbook eversince i first got them. but recently - probably since maverick - i am experiencing a series of problems with my 2010 27" imac. let me be more precise: eversince i got maverick, my imac keeps asking me to update every other day. usually i'm doing this or waiting for a couple of days. it's been exactly three times now that when my imac asked me to update and i postponed it that troubles occured. every single time i am not able to switch from sleep mode into the regular one. the screen stays black and the cursor is visible (and moveable). also i can clearly hear that the computer is on and working. the screen is black, but not in a mat kind of black but as if there was light behind it (i.e. the screen is switched on).
when this happened first, i called the apple support and we tried a lot of things and spoke for more than an hour. the only solution that worked out was pulling the plug, waiting, putting it back, restart the computer with cmd+r pressed and then restore the system from a backup that i had saved on an external drive. this of course takes time, usually up to four hours, but yes - it works. and i am very glad that there is a solution at all to this mess - but it's very idle.
now my question: there must be another way? or even better: how do i avoid that my imac falls to a sleep from which it can't really awake?
thank you for your patience and thank you for your help!
    cheers

  • I replaced my 2010-2011 iMac internal HD i dont have an install disk i created one with my external HD but when i go to install lion onto my imac it stays at the apple logo screen.HELP ME PLEASE!

I replaced my 2010-2011 iMac internal HD i dont have an install disk i created one with my external HD but when i go to install lion onto my imac it stays at the apple logo screen.HELP ME PLEASE!

Boot from the original Install disc that came with the computer and then format the drive Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using the GUID partition. Then  you can re-install OS X. If you no longer have the original media call AppleCare with the serial number of the machine (look on the bottom of the stand) and for a nominal fee they will ship you replacement media.
The chances are very good you will have fan problems if you used an off-the-shelf HD, beginning in 2009 Apple began using HD's from vendors that incorporated heat sensors into the HD. If you did not buy the same type of HD your computer will think the HD is overheating causing the fans to run at full speed.

  • Target display glitching from macbook pro to 2010 27" imac

When i connect using a mini DV port to mini DV port, the Imac screen flickers, glitches and shakes, occasionally blacking out. This seemed to occur when i changed the sound output from the inbuilt speakers of the laptop to the speakers of the imac. Any suggestions or solutions would be greatly appreciated.

    jeffyjeff412,
if your 13-inch MacBook Pro has a Thunderbolt port, then it’s not a Mid 2010 model. If your iMac is a 21-5 inch Late 2009 model, then it doesn’t support Target Display mode; you would need a 27-inch Late 2009 model (or newer) or a 21.5-inch Mid 2011 model (or newer) for that support.

  • Why is the left side of my iMac screen darker than the other, and why does the display randomly go black?

My family has a late 2010 27" Imac. A few months ago, we noticed that the left side of the screen was somewhat darker than the right. As time went on, it continued to get worse and worse. When you turn the computer off for an hour or so, it helps the display out somewhat, but it eventually goes back to being darker on the left. About two months ago, the display started to go completely black. When the screen is black, everything still runs. My itunes library will still play, everything is functioning even though the screen is out. It has started to become more frequent. It is extremely annoying, almost unbearable. Since the one year warranty went out in November, what are we supposed to do about this?

Contact Apple Service, iMac Service or Apple's Express Lane. It's a known issue with 27" iMacs and you might be eligible for replacement. I had mine replaced shortly after buying it. BTW, AppleCare's extended warranty is the cheapest insurance policy one can have for desktop machines. Too bad you missed the deadline.

  • Can't upgrade 2010 27" iMac to Yosemite

Hi all-- i'm at my wits' ends here. I have a 2010 27" iMac with 12GB of RAM. I've been trying to install Yosemite for a week now. (It runs 10.9.5 perfectly.) Whenever I try to upgrade, the iMac restarts and gets to the gray screen with the apple. It then just locks at the progress bar at 50% or so. Sometimes it kernel panics and restarts. I have tried resetting the PRAM/SMC, reformatted drive (I installed a new one, in fact!) and used cmd-R to run disk utility (disk is fine.) Tried deleting boot caches, and that just drops me back into 10.9.5. I honestly don't know what to do at this point. Could it be faulty RAM modules? I got them when I was in Pakistan, and it's not an even number -- 12GB, as I mentioned. Anyone have any ideas?
    Many thanks,
    Chris

  • HELP!!! new iMac. screen shifts side to side and i can't use mouse when this happens.

i bought this imac back in january and have had nothing but problems since then with it. first my OS (lion 10.7.4) crashed or some **** where i got extremely slow and would give me the colored wheel of death so i take it to worst but where i bought it and they say its a corupt hard drive so its sent out. get it back, they say it whats the os system so they re-boot the os on to it. mean while i was having the same problem ive have from the beginning which was the screen would shake side to side when ever i would be doing something and the mouse locks up and i would have to wait for it to stop. this is VERY ANOYING!!! i took it to apple and they ran a series of stress tests on it and they couldnt even get it to produce it once while they had it. so now its STILL doing it!  can anyone please help me. im ready to go to apple and demand a new computer or punch someone in the face...

    I'm speaking from experience.
You're using a wireless Magic Mouse right?  Yeah, thought so.
I first noticed the problem on Lion (10.7.5) but that was also the time my Mighty Mouse or whatever that thing was called crapped out and I upgraded to the Magic Mouse.  I always thought the problem was with the OS.  My system is not supported by Mountain Lion (late 2006 model, the white one) so I did a system reinstall and stil had the issue.  Being stupid, I still attributed it to the OS but had my doubts about the mouse with all the silly swipes here and there and everywhere.  Until today.  I said enough of this garbage and switched off the mouse and plugged in a beat up wired Logitech.  Going on 4 hours now and not one screen shake.
The "iMac screen shake".  Not very well documented.  But **** if that isn't one frustrating mofo.  Seriously, how did I use this thing for many moons with the screen shaking every 3-5 minutes.  ***??   And by the way, to stop the screen from shaking while it's doing it, madly swipe back and forth on the magic mouse shell to take control back.  Man, I'm getting upset just thinking about this problem.  And the waste of $70 for the mouse.
And for what it's worth, I bought an iMac (2010) for my folks and I've noticed the problem on their machine too.  Yep, Magic Mouse.

  • Calibrating 27in iMac with Spyder 2, yellow tone.

    Hello,
I've been all over the net researching trying to calibrate a 27in Imac with Spyder 2 express 2.3 software, which is what i'm using. When I try to calibrate i've been leaving the brightness at full and not changing anything else. 6500k with 2.2, and I keep getting a yellow tone. I am in a dark room.
I keep reading the LED backlighting and Glossy Screens are big problems when it comes to calibrating the 27 in imacs. I am a photographer so its important that I have accurate color, is there different settings I should try?
Thanks for any input, the yellow tone is definitely way off.
    Trevor

I am using iMac 27" i7 and spyder as well. I don't have any problem calibrating the iMac. The only problem is that some of the iMac will not save the brightness settings and it will automatically resume to the brightest when reboot.
I once complained about the temperature of running W7 on the iMac, they checked my iMac and found minor issue with my display panel (some grey mark on the bottom on the screen), AppleCare voluntarily replaced the display panel for me. Then the diagnostic found an error message with the panel (which I used for 2 to 3 weeks without any issue), they offered to replace another new panel for me. Excellent service.
Why don't you try to contact them about the yellow color on your display, it might not be a spyder issue at all. Cheers.
