2010 IMAC how to test RAM

I want to install some new RAM in my 2010 imac, and test it. On Mountion Lion, the hardware test does not run when pressing ctrl+d or holding down the d key. Also, booting memtest from dvd does not work, it is simply ignored? Is there a way of testing RAM?

See http://https://discussions.apple.com/message/20014699#20014699 for starters. As for memtest, use Rember.

    Introduction
HP machines have built-in Bios testers for RAM and HDD's.
To use them you need to enter Bios by pressing F10 on startup. They are placed under ' Diagnostics menu '.
Why I wrote this guide and complicate whole situation?
    There are three reasons:
This testers are not so great and sometimes they do not detect problems which you may have with your hardware. It's recommended to use more advanced tester for RAM and manufacter diagnostic programs to test HDD's.
Not always you will be able to enter Bios. Sometimes corrupted hardware is blocking possibility to run it.
Advanced diagnostic softwares for hard drives allow to fix some problems.

There are few possibilities to run this program. In this guide I will present how to run it from:
    CD
           and
    USB Flash Drive.
First we need to burn Memtest86+ on a CD or prepare properly USB Flash drive with a special tool.
Here you will find Memtest86+ home page from which you will be able to download correct version of this software.
    Solution 1. CD:
Download ' Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip) ' and extract it with 7-Zip(free) or WinRar.
Download CDBurnerXP from here. Install this program and run it.
Choose ' Browse ISO image '.
            and point Memtest86+ iso file.
            Click ' Burn disc '.
Wait until burning process will finish.
            Choose ' OK '.
            Exit from program.
    Solution 2. USB Flash Drive:
Download ' Auto-installer for USB Key (Win 9x/2k/xp/7) ' and extract it with 7-Zip(free) or WinRar.
Connect USB Flash Drive to one of USB ports. Run ' Memtest86+ 4.10 USB Installer '.
             Click ' I Agree '.
Select USB Flash Drive and check box to format it.
         Caution!
Format process will erase all information from USB Flash Drive. If you have there something important then please backup this data first.
               Choose ' Create '.
Wait until process will finish and click ' Next '.
Exit from program by choosing ' Finish '.
    How to run Memtest86+.
Leave USB Flash drive in USB port or CD in CD/DVD drive. Restart your system and on startup press F9 key repetitively:
After this step you will be able to select from which device you want to boot. Choose from the list ' USB Hard Drive ' if you have prepared USB Flash Drive (like on below photo) or ' Optical Disk Drive ' if you have prepared CD:
How to use Memtest86+ to test RAM?
Do at least 2 - 3 passes. In Errors column may show up only 0. If it's other number then you need to replace corrupted RAM stick.

  • Mid 2010 iMac Problems

    I have a 21.5" Mid 2010 iMac with 16 GB RAM, running 10.8.5.
    Problem #1
It's recently started doing some odd behavior when waking up from sleep. I have the screen saver set to come on after 5 minutes of inactivity and then the display and computer both sleep at 15 minutes.
When I try to wake the computer up by moving the mouse, it takes anywhere between 5-10 seconds for the password prompt to pop up and then it's another 2-5 seconds before it will let me type in the box. It also seems that when the computer sleeps, the wifi is disconnecting, because the computer won't have received any new email and all my mailboxes have the little exclamation symbol next to them.
After about 5 seconds or so once the computer fully wakes up, it reconnects and pulls all my new mail.
    Problem #2
This usually happens when I just browsing facebook or youtube or something like that, but when I switch over to another application and come back to Safari, I will get the beach ball for a few seconds and then the computer will freeze.  The mouse cursor turns into the little "I" symbol like when you go to type or highlight text.  The only thing I can do at this point is a restart.
    Problem #3
I have spaces set up with Safari, Mail, iCal, and iTunes in spaces 1, 2, 3, and 4.  Most of the time I'm in Safari, but if I move to another space either with the mouse or the keyboard shortcut, to check for new mail, for instance, and go immediately back to Safari, it will on it's own jump back to the space I just left.  It happens with any space no matter what.  I use the option + arrow keys to go between spaces a lot.
Does anyone have any idea why this happens?   Thanks for your help.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • 2010 iMac and Yosemite

I have a 2010 iMac with 12GB of RAM and over 2TB of hard drive space. Since I have loaded Yosemite, the computer seems to be running slower that it used to. Opening some files, trashing files, opening some files, etc. Just wondering if there is any solutions. Thanks....

    Thanks Allan,
I have downloaded and run EtreCheck. Here is the report:

  • Will old Canopus ADVC-100 work on 2010 imac?

    HI There
    I am running 10.6.8, have a 2010 imac 27" with 8gb ram
I want to start importing my video footage into either imovie or FCP connecting an old VHS to my Canopus ADVC-100 and then the Canopus to the mac
I am guessing i just need a firewire converter or something? Can someone advise which cable i need?
The Canopus has the small and normal firewire ports of the past (see manual here: http://finearts.uvic.ca/sim/equipment/manuals/_av_convert/advc100.pdf)
I haven't had any need for this new firewire port on the back and wondered if i invested in a firewire converter it would work or whether the hardware is too old for the imac?
Sorry if this is a daft question
    regards..

I'm not sure why there would be conflicts.  The ouput of the ADVC is pure DV video, that's the beauty of the ADVC, it doesn't need any proprietary drivers or capture applications like most USB solutions do, so it isn't really OS dependent in any way.  As long as your application understands DV cameras you should be OK.  I've used my ADVC-55 with Snow Leopard before and am now using it with Lion, with iMovie.

  • 27" 2010 iMac 16gb RAM...still swapping?

I upgraded my 27" 2010 iMac (quad core i7) to 16gb RAM, and some things are a bit faster e.g. photoshop.  But perhaps it wasn't the noticeable speed boost I was expecting.  Also, I can definitely hear a lot of swapping out to virtual memory happening at times.  On startup it happens a lot.  I can't believe it's going beyond 16gb in terms of memory requirements just to start up.  The "About this mac" info panel shows that it has definitely recognised all 16gb memory.
Am I imagining things re the swapping?  Do I have anything to be concerned about?  What tests can I do to ensure that this is as fast as it should be and that it's not dodgy hardware or something?  Any comments appreciated.
    cheers,
    Ian

I have tried the usual stuff: disk permissions repair, SMC reset, PRAM reset, dragging caches to trash, restarting computer, etc.  My internet connection and speed is good.  Computer is mid-2010 i3 iMac with 10.9.2 OS, 12GB RAM, and there is plenty of unused space on my HDD.
The computer is very slow to start applications and load web pages.  I ran Etresoft as some have suggested and the report is below.  Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Question Regarding 2010 iMac 11,3 Ram...

    Good afternoon to all,
I own two Mac computers... 1st is a 2010 iMac 11,3 2.93mhz and it has 8g's of RAM that consists of 4-2g. The 2nd is a mid 2012 13" MBP 9,2 2.9mhz and it came with 8g's of RAM installed.
    The iMac runs 1333mhz DDR3
    The MBP runs 1600mhz DDR3
I am upgrading the MBP to 16g's and I would like to use the 2-4g chips out of the MBP in the iMac.
I understand that it will not work at 1600mhz because the iMac is clocked at 1333mhz but will it work in my iMac. The reason I ask is merely to not waste it.

Only use the RAM specified for each iMac. iMacs are sensitive to RAM and installing incorrect RAM at the very least can cause crashes and at an extreme cause damage to OS X. It is always wise to hold onto original RAM as it can be used for testing in the event you have future RAM related problems. I strongly suggest that when upgrading the RAM that you use either OWC (www.macsales.com) or Crucial due to their reliability.

  • I just updated my RAM and I keep getting a crash report. I have a 21.5 Inch mid 2010 imac. I also am experiencing slow load times and when I try to open Final Cut it says that quartz extreme is not compatible and that I have no VRAM even though I do.

I just updated my RAM (replaced the two 2 gig cards with two Corsair 8 gig cards) and I keep getting a crash report. I have a 21.5 Inch mid 2010 imac. I also am experiencing slow load times with Photoshop and when I try to open Final Cut it says that quartz extreme is not compatible and that I have no VRAM even though I do.

There have been a few reports on here where Corsair RAM seems to have caused users a lot of grief with crashes.
The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.

  • I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, can't join existing wireless network with AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. working fine with TM

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM.  My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore.  Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.  I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads.  Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system.  I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system.  But are there other options to connect the new TC.  Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above.  after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light  or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working.  Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant.  I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work.  The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network.  Are we going backwards?
    Thanks!

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.
    I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC.  the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.
    Thanks again!
You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

  • How do I determine if the memory problems are with my imac and not the RAM?

I've heard of some vague problems with intel imacs and their memory slots. I'm about to replace (for the 3rd time) RAM, and think I need to test further to see if the problem is with my imac and not the RAM. Right now I put back in the original 2-512 sticks that came with the imac, and the rember test is only showing 594mb (odd amt!) testing OK. But, in "about my mac" it will show as 1gb.
Problems I've had with each set of RAM: occasional KP's, excessive spinning beachballs, sudden closing of apps (esp. if I have several apps running), won't fax usually (will hear a fax tone instead of a dial tone at the onset), disappearing documents section under my username.
I bought this imac refurbed thru the apple store last fall: 2.16 C2D 20" imac
Any ideas before I have to separate myself from my imac to send it in??

    Hi Toodles
The pin strips on the new modules maybe a little thicker than your original modules, and it's going to take more force to seat them properly. If the new Memory Specifications are correct I would try them again. Slide them in untill they stop, then push real hard untill you feel them seat into place.
I've never seen a report about an odd amount of ram shown. If reinstalling the ram modules does not solve your issue, and may be a indication that there is something wrong with one of the slots.

Where Can I Find How to Change RAM in a 2005 iMac, 1.8 GHz PPC G5?
    Thanks

    Given that there are three different models of 1.8 GHz PPC G5's using PC3200 DDR 400MHz 184 Pin RAM (Size - 17"/20";  Year - 2004/2005; Model No. - A1058, A1076; Model ID - PowerMac8,1, PowerMac8,2; Order No. - M9843LL/A, M9250LL/A, M9249LL/A; EMC No.- 1989, 2008, 2055),  you usually need to provide more information.

  • How to add a SSD to 2010 iMac with 1tb drive

How to add a SSD to 2010 iMac with 1tb drive? I have a mid-2010 iMac with 1tb HD and would like to either replace the HD with SSD -or- add 256 or 400gb SSD to maybe the Optical Drive and use it as the boot drive. Is this possible with Model 11,2? i thought i\I'd read it was, but recently am reading my system is too old - OWC have SSD drives for newer models not Model 11,1 -or- 11,2

Any SATA SSD will work, whatever you are reading is incorrect.
You have 2 choices with this model-install the SSD in place of the HDD or the Superdrive.
If you are installing in place of Superdrive you will need some form of SSD Caddy-these can be found on the cheap at places like eBay, also OWC sell one called the DataDoubler.
    Guide:https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing+iMac+Intel+21.5-Inch+EMC+2389+Dual+Hard+ Drive/8643
If installing in place of old HDD you will notice that the propietary Temperature Sensor will not fit on the new drive, you will need to replace this with a sensor such as this or this
You will also need a 3.5inch to 2.5inch drive adaptor such as this
    Guide: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+21.5-Inch+EMC+2389+Hard+Drive+Replacemen t/6284
If you still have doubts contact OWC as mentioned above, I would start deciding whether your Superdive is needed or if you want to swap out the HDD.
Hope this points you in the right direction
