2010 Mac Mini, Front Row and 5.1 Audio

I recently bought one of the new 2010 Mac mini's for my home theater. I have video going to my TV through HDMI. (I do not use the TV for audio.) I'm feeding audio to my receiver via optical. The problem I'm having is with 5.1 audio through Front Row. I've installed Perian and enabled AC3 passthrough. 5.1 audio works great when I play a video in iTunes (it also works with eyeTV). When I try to play the same movies through Front Row, I'm stuck with stereo audio and see no way to change it. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

I too have the latest mini, hooked up to a Denon receiver via pass-through HDMI.
I am not an audiophile in terms of setting up this stuff and just want to know what I need to do to get the optimum performance out of this mini, audio wise.
When I go to Audio MIDI Setup app, my receiver (DENON-AVAMP) is listed next to the "source" button. I have no clue about channels, bits, etc. When I click on the "Configure Speakers" button I am presented with different configurations so I selected "Multichannel" versus "Stereo". And I can see where you can test all 5 speakers and subwoofer, but I just don't know which "format" I am supposed to select.
The 5.1 mapping is shown when I select 8 channel/16 bit, 8 channel/20 bit, or 8 channel 24 bit. I can click on each speaker in this map and it tests properly no matter which one of the above combinations I select. Just not sure which one I am supposed to be using.
All I know is my Denon is a 5.1 system and all this works perfectly (getting 5.1 sound) with my Playstation 3 hooked up the same way to the Denon.
Does anybody know the correct settings to output 5.1 sound from this Mac Mini?
Thanks guys!

  • OS 10.6.5, mac mini, Front Row, and Bose V20 don;t play nice

Since updating to 10.6.5 my 2010 mac mini using HDMI output to the Bose system will play one ripped video, then won;t play another without locking up (stuttering without audio) and then if I repair privileges, turn everything off and back on, and hold my tongue just right, the movie that wouldn;t play works fine without a lot of rhyme or reason... any ideas? when the audio strats acting up front row may not even play music without backing all the way put and then going back in...
(the log on privilege repair is pretty long, whereas before 10.6.5 it was almost nil)...
    Thought?

Since the first post I think I have narrowed the issue to some kind of handshake between the mini and the Bose on the HDMI port... didn;t have an issue like this with OS 10.6.4. Might have to resort to Mini-DVI to HDMI and send the audio optically...

  • Mac Mini, Front Row and projection TV?

I am wondering whether our plan to get a new MacMini with Front Row to be the heart of our entertainment system is a good idea. We want to use the Mac as our DVD player and stereo (music) source. We also want to get a fairly high resolution projector (like the ones used for presentations) instead of a TV, probably for ~ $1500.
We saw a projection setup at a friend's house (not with Mac, just used for TV) and it was fabulous to watch a basketball game in giant size on their white wall. They could switch from letterbox format to regular TV size display at the push of a button. The picture was very clear.
Our new house will also have a large wall space available. Has anyone done this kind of setup? What words of wisdom, advice, or warning do you have in terms of the setup or the type of projector to get?

  • Mini, Front Row, and HDMI...

Picked up a new Mini to merge our server (iTunes, iPhoto, et al were being served off my laptop, which was fine only when I was at home) with our Apple TV. Mostly a positive thing... moving iTunes and iPhoto onto the Mini went smoothly, the Mini plugged right into the power cable and HDMI cable that were there for the Apple TV, so that went wonderfully. Outputting to a 42" Samsung LED-backlit LCD in our family room.
Our only big downside right now: if we leave Front Row running, and turn off the TV, when we turn it back on later we're greeted with a solid blue screen that doesn't respond to the remote, the keyboard or mouse... we've had to reboot twice in the two days we've been set up like this. For now, we just have to remember to turn off Front Row... if we're on the normal Finder, it doesn't seem to have this problem.
Is this a known HDMI/Mini/Front Row issue, where it gets into a bad state if the TV is turned off, or something particular to my set up? I was kinda hoping this would be our entertainment system moving forward, it's certainly happier in other ways (gives our family a nice central place to plug in iPods, iPhones, iPads, expands easily, etc, etc)...
    Thanks in advance!!!
PS: Our other minor gripe, for those who care, is just Front Row feeling like a step back from the Apple TV interface (which used to look like Front Row when we first got it, but got better)... I'd switch us to Plex, but it doesn't play our TV shows and movies off iTunes, so I'm hoping Apple will update Front Row someday to be something happier.

So far so good on the Mini... the down side (other than the hanging blue evil screen) is just how clunky Front Row is. The Apple TV interface wasn't perfect, but it was much cleaner than the Front Row interface.
We were watching Netflix streaming through Plex last night... Plex is awesome, I'd absolutely use it full-time and forget Front Row except we own a lot of movies and TV shows we've purchased through iTunes, and Plex can't play DRM'ed video. Because of that, right now we're using Plex for things like Netflix, Daily Show, Hulu, etc, and Front Row for our purchased media.
We copied our libraries over onto the Mini, consolidating them along the way.
With our previous setup, we had movies and TV shows on an external drive that was connected to my laptop, streaming to the Apple TV... which worked fine except when I needed to take my laptop somewhere, then the family was stuck watching whatever was actually living on the Apple TV.
Music, a lot of it was on my iTunes, but my wife and daughters had stuff on their iTunes on their machines... and with a plethora of iPhones, iPods, and iPads in the house now, we found we weren't using our laptops as media devices as much.
We started talking about collecting all our material (music, TV, movies, photos, etc) and putting it all on one device... then the Mini came out, and it looked perfect to just replace the Apple TV and be our central hub for everything!
So far, it's great... full 1080p, fast little box, moving the material over was painless, everything's syncing there now... just want a Front Row replacement that'll play iTunes video, and want to be able to leave that thing up all the time and expect it to be there when I turn the TV on.

  • Mid 2010 Mac Mini Hard Drive and Ram "Repost"

As there is no way to EDIT my previous post, here it is with a more descriptive subject line, sorry to all.
When I purchased my new Mini the store information tag showed the hard drive as a 7200 rpm, that is one of the main reasons why I bought it. So, I unknowingly (Till today) have a 5400 rpm Mini and as of now, I'm a bit underwhelmed with the performance and wondered if a ram upgrade will give me that much more speed and performance. I have both the original Mac dual 1ghz and a dual 2ghz models, both seem faster than my new Mac. As before, I'm a little disappointed with this model, any thoughts appreciated

Mid 2010 unibody Mini with 2gb ram Mac OS X (10.6.4)

I boot from a Firewire 800 external hard drive. Others will tell you whether this is actually faster or not, all I know is that I'm not the first to do this, and it works well for me.
I'd also add that sure, more RAM would always be good.

I have a 2010 mac mini referbished and i dont see the Disk Utilitiy in the Utilities on the install disk. Is that because it is refurbished?

The software that comes with your refurbished Mini should be identical to that which comes with a new Mini. Disk Utility should be in Applications > Utilities. Alternatively, choosing Utilities from the Go menu at the top of the finder windownwill take you directly to the Utilities folder.

  • Have downloaded Mountain Lion on my 2010 Mac Mini. Now when starting up, after a while I get a message that says, "You must restart your computer." I do that but get the same message again and again. Any ideas? Thanks!

I am having issues trying to start up with Mountain Lion on my 2010 Mac Mini. Here's the scenario:
    1) After starting up, I get the usual gray screen with Apple logo.
    2) After a few minutes, a darker gray screen scrolls down and in the middle of this is a black dialogue box with reversed (white) text. This text, in multiple languages, reads: "You need to restart your computer." Then it goes on to instruct on how to shut it down and restart it.
    3) I follow this instruction, but get the same dialogue box over and over agin.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks and best wishes.

If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all. Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is on a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid. Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the entire contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

  • 2010 mac mini Home cinema sound and Home cinema headphones

    Hello
im waiting for my 2010 mac mini to arrive,
ive experience with home cinema setups in the past.
Im looking to use my mac mini as a home cinema set up.
Im fine with the visual side ( projectors and hdtv).
    The audio.
How on earth do i get home cinema sound into headphones.
due to where i live, headphones are the only option i have ( neighbours dont like noise.)
    ive tried :-
    sony mdr-drs7100
    Pioneer SE-DRS3000c
    pioneer dir-8000c.
the three above are ok as they have home cinema audio processing built in and worked with the optical digital output fine.
bass on the above 3 is weak.
i aso will prefer a wired set of headphones ( had enough of wireless)
im now looking at another route.
    1) a decent headphone amplifier capable of playing DTS and Dolby digital 5.1
    2) decent set of headphones to handle the above.
anyone any setups they can share that work
    many thanks

    Hey David,
My issue was resolved by ensuring that I was using a PAL resolution and frequency (720p @ 50 Hz or 1080p @ 50 Hz) for my PAL TV. Anything else causes audio stuttering through my HDMI cable.
Don't ask me why. Try this on your setup by using only the one of your TV's native resolutions and frequencies (Should say NTSC Television on every native TV resolution if you are in the US, PAL Television in Europe). If you do have an NTSC TV, then you might be able to use all of the 60 Hz frequency resolutions without HDMI audio out problems, but I wouldn't count on it.
From what I've researched on the issue, it is only TV's that have this problem, and it is a strange one, as it is actually a  display setting problem with an audio error symptom.

  • 2010 Mac Mini display and network issues after Mountain Lion installation

I just installed Mountain Lion on my 2010 Mac Mini, but now the display won't work and it isn't showing up on my network.  I have it hooked up to my TV (I don't have another screen for it) via HDMI.  Also, I've mainly used this computer by using the share screen function with my laptop, so I don't have a keyboard or mouse for it either.  The Mini is no longer showing up on my laptop's network list...  Any suggestions?

I would see if you borrow a USB keyboard and mouse
from some one, because otherwise trouble shooting the
problem will be next to impossible as sometimes the fixes
and diagnostics require the keyboard (PRAM reset, Hardware
    Test, etc.).

  • 2010 Mac Mini and OSX Lion

    Hi Everyone,
Hoping I can get some advice.
I have a 2010 Mac Mini and am thinking about upgrading to OSX Lion.
Although I know my Mac meets the system requirments (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2Gb RAM), I was wondering what the performace is like on with these specs.
I mainly use my Mac for iTunes, Safari, Twitter and iPhoto if that makes any difference.
    Thanks!

It works ok for me, I've got a 2010 mini (base model) and am using it as a server for web, iTunes and VPN. It handles lion fine, the only quibble is that being always on it heats up during the day a lot, more so than when I had Snow leopard installed. It's not to unacceptable levels though. But as dingy and beezelbubba say, Ram is cheap nowadays and if you've got the spare cash it's always worth it.

  • Sound toggles on and off when I hit the "0" key on a 2010 Mac Mini.

Whenever I hit the zero key on an Apple keyboard using a 2010 Mac Mini, the sound toggles on and off.  It does not happen when I use the keyboard with a 2012 Macbook Pro.  There can be times when the sound toggles when I am not even typing. I upgraded to Mountasin  Lion, but this did not resoilbve the issue.  I have disabled remote control.
Thanks to all for your help.

    Hi John,
That's often a sign of a bsad Capacitor in the Power Supply, but...
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

why is my mac so slow i have cleansed and cleaned it is a 2010 mac mini i5 but it runs like a 20 year old pc i have only had it for a few months and it was straight out of the box

I'm thinking that you have a > Mac mini (Mid 2011) - Technical Specifications because the 2010 model's only have Core 2 Duo processors and the 2011 had the first i5 processor.
2 GB of RAM is the minimum requirement for Mountain Lion, but it's hardly enough to really enjoy doing anything else.
see > Memory and Free Installation Guides for Apple Mac Mini
Plus I don't have any problems running Mountain Lion and a load of App's on my 2010 Mac Mini with 8GB of RAM.

  • Replace mid 2010 mac mini hard drive(s) and thermal sensor(s)

TL;DR: How do I swap SSd for HDD in Mid 2010 Mac Mini without Fan problems.
I'd like to replace both my Mac Mini HDD's with SSD's, but removing/repositioning* the factory thermal sensors will default the fan to full throttle! (I've had this happen on my other mid 2010 test machine). Has anyone successfully swapped out their drives and not had to deal with a system fan on Afterburner mode?
Note: on my test mac mini, I tried SMC fan control as well as SSD Fan Control apps and neither is able to change the fan RPM.
SMC Fan control (this is what I use on my macbook)
    https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23049/smcfancontrol
SSD Fan Control: (suggested by others with similar thermal sensor/fan problems)
    http://exirion.net/ssdfanctrl
    * the position of the thermal sensors on the factory hitachi's is apparently important. In a test, I moved one a few millimeters and the fans defaulted to full speed.
    Cheers!
    Ken

I replace the HD on my 2009 Mini with no fan problems.
From your description I think yo have either a sensor or logic board problem. If the sensor was not attached to the HD and was "cold" then the fan speed would not increase if the HD got hot.
When you played around with sensor position what what the temperature  of the sensor when you go the "right" fan speed and the runaway speed.

  • Server 10a403 on 2010 Mac Mini

Is it possible to install 10.6 Server 10a403 on a 2010 Mac Mini (not the server version of the Mini). Booted from the DVD in verbose mode and the boot sequence stops at "AirPort: Link Down..." so my guess is outdated drivers. Is there any way around this or do I have to upgrade to Lion Server? Would prefer 10.6 Server as the box is mainly used as a media centre (we stream all TV  instead of paying for cable), use as a Time Machine backup hub and my 3 yr old son likes to use Front Row
I am a member of Apple Developer Connection and a search reveals 10a403 seems to be the only full DVD installer.
    Any help appreciated!

This is the more difficult configuration for sharing to get to work.
