2010 Mac Pro began acting crazy: FCPX crashes, and now Fan comes on super loud.

Yesterday I was brining in (importing) 1080p24 HD from my Canon 5DmkII CF card via rocketfish card reader, and everything was going well as per normal, and then very quickly, both my monitors went blue and it almost looked like it was back on-line within less than a second, except FCPX was closed, and then Canon Utility for reading my card opened as though I had just inserted my CF card.
It was really weird and kind of scary - especially the speed of how quickly all this happened.  Some of you guys know me, but in short, I've been editing in FCP since it was introduced, and I will list all the improtant details below - but please check this out:
This evening, I booted up my Mac Pro and it started with a new twist; the fan(s) came on like a turbine - louder than ever before, as though it was hotwired to 240 volts!  Just the noise of the fan freaked me out and I botted down right away.  Does anybody out there know what might be going on?
MacPro 5,1 (late 2010)
2.8 GHz Quad Core
OSX 10.6.8
FCPX 10.0.6 (haven't downloaded the most recent update yet)
Please help if you are familliar with any of the issues listed above!  Thanks, Stephen

so funny how after all these years working on mac's etc., even if we don't know what's up - it just feels better to know someobdy out there (hello.... hello....) hears me - feels my pain.  Yup - first round with my dear first personal Mac Pro was a crazy process of diagnostics and multiple phone calls and the case number and the system scan and upload results - but really nobody knew what was wrong!
I was stunned when they dispatched a guy in a van (complete with ladder) all the way out to Summit County from Denver and he comes upstairs to my "studio" and basically tears my Mac Pro down to the shell, replaces the entire motherboard, reassembles it and gives me a new SN!  Seriously - I was almost in shock...
"Where did that motherboard come from?  Is it new???  Does this guy know what he's doing???  "Can you just lay all these parts on my carpet like that???  I was pretty nervous.
Anyway - yeah, I feel awful that my fan is maxed out again, but yet I'm doing another AE render anyways.  I figure it can't hurt that it's screaming - it's definately not gonna get hot!  BUT  good suggestion to check the sensor readings!  I downloaded smcfancontrol 2.4 and it only had minimums in the custom settings and I didn't see where I could set limits for maximum speeds - really seems like there is no controlling this!

Should I buy airport express, extreme or time capsule?  I have my new Mac Pro. 2 iPhones, 2 iPads , and grandchildren who come with their devices.  I live in a two-level house.

A Time Capsule is an AirPort Extreme with a built in hard drive to allow your Mac(s) to back up automatically, so it's a logical choice if you need a wireless router and back up capabilities for your Macs
The AIrPort Extreme has a bit better antenna arrangement than an AirPort Express, so it would be a good choice for a two level house.
Depending on the location of the "main" wireless router, you may find that you still need to add an extender or two in other parts of the house for full, fast wireless coverage. The AirPort Express is a good choice for this duty.

  • 2010 Mac Pro with Apple RAID card - "Drive carrier 00:03 removed"

I've got a 2010 Mac Pro with the Apple RAID card and 4 internal identical Seagate ST32000641AS 2TB drives inside.
I've never had a problem with the RAID card (either battery or in operation) except for one thing:
Almost every time I shut the machine down (which I try to do as rarely as possible), it keeps losing Drive 3, the spare.
(See RAID Utility event log snippet below.)
[I wish I could understand why this Apple RAID card keeps losing the spare across power-cycles/reboots, but I digress.]
So I just adopted it as the spare and it spawns the rebuild and many hours later, everything's fine again.
... until the last time I rebooted (Jan. 2nd).
After the usual "I lost the spare" message upon login, it began the rebuild.
But this time, about 11 1/2 hours later the rebuild stopped and RAID Utility reported "Drive carrier 00:03 removed".
Bay 3 is now missing in the Controller view.
I powered off the system last night, and left it off overnight.  Today I took all the drives out, blew the dust off and reseated them.
Same thing.  Drive 3 is still missing, and now the rebuild task aborted.
The drive bay location shouldn't matter, right?  Can I swap the Bay 3 drive with the Bay 4 drive?
I figure one of two things would happen:
    (1) It will report Bay 3 as being there but Bay 4 as being missing, same situation as is now.  Meaning the problem is in the Bay 3 spare drive.
    (2) It will report Bay 3 as being missing (despite a 'good' drive being present) and Bay 4 will be the (unattached) spare, and the RAID set will be unviable.  Meaning the problem is with the drive bay itself, not whatever drive is plugged into it.
If "Drive carrier removed" is trying to tell me the disk is bad, why do I not see any log messages about it?  I suppose a spare that never gets used could go bad from lack of use, but ... no messages at all?

    I was talking about this.
This looks like a RAID 5 setup without the parity to me. I would said it basically a RAID 0.
Also you metioned "I guess that previous spare must really have gone 'bad', despite having never been used! "
I wiped everything out, I selected the 3 disks and clicked on "Create RAID Set" with RAID5 selected and the "Use unassigned drives as spares" option checked.  The 3rd disk has always been marked as the spare ever since then.  You do not have a choice to create a "RAID5 setup without the parity".  If I wanted a RAID0 I would have chosen a RAID0!  raidutil now says
    % sudo raidutil list raidsetinfo
                                         Total     Avail
Raidsets      Type       Drives       Size      Size  Comments
    RS1           RAID 5     1,2,3,4    5.23TB    0.00MB  No tasks running
Every time the system would 'lose' Drive 3 on boot, I would just keep rebooting until it was 'found', and then manually re-assign the now-'floating' drive as the spare - and the RAID would rebuild.
There was never a problem until the day that prompted this post - when it would not find Drive 3 no matter what I did.  I turned the Mac Pro off for several hours until the drives had all cooled down and it still did not find the drive.  I left the machine on but unmounted the degraded volume until I got the new replacement drive.
I really don't understand what you are getting at. It's like you are trying to tell me I set it up as a 4-drive RAID5 with no parity(!) and that I was in grave danger because one of the disks was gone.  The actual RAID contents (spread across Drives 1, 2 and 4) were never in danger, unless a 2nd disk had failed while the spare was not seen by the Apple RAID card.  I wasn't too worried about that happening.

  • Macbook pro 2010...cursor is acting crazy jumping everywhere and responding very slow...thought it was the track pad but I plugged in a mouse and it still does the same thing...is this a virus?..and can someone please help?...

My Macbook pro is acting Crazy....the Cursor just keeps on jumping everywhere and not responding when I use the trackpad....Even when it does respond it is very slow...I thought it was the trackpad acting up but realized it wasnt when i plugged in a mouse and it still did the same thing...this happened one other time and shortly after my computer froze...I had to restart for it to work but restarting dosent help this time...can someone please help?...Is this a Virus?

It is not a virus.  See my Mac Virus Guide*.
As to what it might be, that's hard to say.  You should try some basic troubleshooting...  Repair the hard drive with disk utility.  Boot in safe mode and see if it happens then, log in to a different user account and see if it happens there, reboot from another system and see if it happens.
Apparently some people have had this kind of problem caused by swelling batteries that push on the underside of the trackpad and cause all kinds of strange problems.  Is your machine's underside deformed at all?

  • 2010 Mac Pro Crash and Firmware Update Issue

My 2010 Mac Pro crashes for no apparent reason. I have a couple FCP projects to finish and I cannot rely on this machine. I have the most recent problem report details and a pesky Firmware update that appears corrupted and refuses to install.
I've repaired permissions using Disk utility, applejack, and even used memtest to check that I didn't have a bad RAM module. All tasks ran successfully.
These may be 2 separate problems. I'm not sure at this point.
I'm using only 1/3 of the drive capacity for the OS drive and about on my Final Cut Media drive.
FCP is compatible. Been using it for nearly a year. Using a third drive for a Time Machine Back-up of all FCP media. The firmware update is specifically for the 2010 Mac Pro - Mac Pro EFI Update 1.5

    OK, thanks.
So I restored the original firmware, and I got through the update.
Here is what the update instructions should say:
"Once the flashing starts continue holding until the light is steady again."
I thnk my problem was that I released the button too soon.

You are due for a new build or pre-built, most definitely.
you should be able to hit score of 14k on 6-core w/o trouble.
And for what you can get for £1799 - £2099 I think you could build one, but start with quality parts and go with a solid foundation that will be supported for years. As long as you don't need OS X as it stands.
the mac pro use to shine when it came to dual processor setups. Custom built dual PCs can be another matter, and not for faint of heart.
Choose current socket support, processor, and motherboard and you really are set for years and can upgrade from there.

  • 2010 Mac Pro Boot Camp - Refuses to boot Windows after installing Boot Camp drivers

    Hey all,
    I have a quad 3.2Ghz 2010 Mac Pro with a Radeon 5870 and 8 GB RAM.
I have 2 10000RPM WD Raptor drives, the first drive is my Lion boot drive. The 4th bay contains the second Raptor which has Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed. Bay 2 has Time Machine, bay 3 has a Windows backup drive.
I had first installed Windows and the Boot Camp drivers a few months ago and everything was humming along smoothly. Monday I tried to boot into Windows and it crashed immediately after the black Booting Windows screen started to change to the login window. This happened repeatedly. Nothing changed on the system that I am aware of. Whenever I tried to boot windows again, it booted into the repair mode. That did not seem to work because after running the repair it would still not boot.
So I did what is usually required of Windows, and that was to reinstall. I reformatted the hard drive, ran Boot Camp assistant, and started the install.
Everything was peachy so far, so I tried to reinstall the Boot Camp drivers (4.0). Did a reboot. Same problem. Doh!
So I did ANOTHER reinstall, and everything was fine. But this time I tried to install the Boot Camp drivers off the os install disc that came with my Mac (3.1). Still no go!
So finally I did my third reinstall and after that I did not install Boot Camp drivers. However, I did load up the CD and individually installed drivers for the Apple Mouse, Apple Keyboard, Cinema Display, etc. No problems whatsoever. Everything is actually still humming along fine.
So it looks like running the full Boot Camp install for some reason no longer works. Which means I am missing the Apple Boot Camp control panel, but that's not really a big deal. Althought it's quite annoying to not have the functionality of the special Mac keyboard keys like volume control, etc.
Has anyone run into this? I thought it might be a hardware problem but my Mac OS X OS exhibits no problems whatsoever.
    Thanks!

    Thank you to The hatter.
I have a Mac Pro mid 2010 with a SSD and several internal hard disks. For some time I was trying to install Windows 7 on a fresh boot camp volume on a new WD 7200rpm 1TB hard disk. It was taking hours to install, and then I had a series of failures to reboot that proved permanent. The Window Repair utility would come up and took forever to repair the volume - but failed to actually do so, requiring completion reinstallation of the bootcamp volume. This occurred three times, between 1 day and 2 months after installation. I had already moved the Windows drive in to drive slot 1 of the Mac Pro.
Eventually I gave up and installed boot camp on a secondary partition of the SSD. This worked fine, however is limited in capacity. So yesterday I thought I would try to install Windows on the hard disk again. The Windows installer took many hours to do its thing, and eventually a message came up that the installation had failed.
I took your tip about possible hard disk failure, and ran Techtool Pro surface scan. It turns out that there are lots of bad blocks being reported. According to Micromat's documentation, the bad blocks being reported are those that may be in critical areas of the disk that cannot be mapped out. They recommend low level reinitialisation (with zeros) to map out the bad blocks, if possible. I am now running Apple's Disk Utility to do this, and fingers crossed that this reinitialisation succeeds, or I will have to replace the drive.

  • Problems with EFI Firmware Update to 1.5 for mid 2010 Mac Pro, and sleep issues

Hello to the community, I have run into an annoying issue.
I need to update the EFI firmware on my 8 core mid-2010 Mac Pro. I downloaded the EFI update from the apple website from here : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1321
But everytime I download it, as I click to install, it gives me the message:
    Alert
This software is not supported on your system.
But clearly this is the correct EFI for my computer. I tried burning the Firmware restoration onto a CD from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1320
But the computer did not respond the way it said it should (with the 3 flashes/beeps etc.) and have the optical drive open for the CD.
    So I'm completely stuck.
*Also my Mac Pro had issues with sleep, when I put it to sleep, sometimes when I try to bring it back, it restarts itself, and other times, it just turns itself on and the monitor screen remains black, so I have to hit the power button to turn it off then back on again. This only happnens when the computer has been put to sleep for a slightly extended period of time, roughly 20mins +, sometimes longer.  I was trying to solve this problem by first updating the firmware because I think it could be related to that, but I've had this problem with the firmware so I couldn't find out. This is actually the bigger problem for me because it will affect my work. I am currently using an iMac while I fix up this mac pro.
I'm a music composer so I've upgraded many aspects of my system due to work. I have a 1TB Samsung 840 evo SSD, 2 seagate 2 TB HDD, and 1 WD 1TB HD (the original one in the mac pro), along with 32 GB of RAM. So my only problems are the firmaware and the weird activity when the computer is put to sleep.
Some help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Full backup ( ~ 1 TB ) using external HD - speed USB vs. Firewire vs. eSATA  - what are relative speeds - how to install eSATA on mid-2010 Mac Pro desktop ( dual hex-core processors)_

        Hi All,
I'm trying to resume regular scheduled Full backup ( ~ 1 TB ) of drives using external HD (to allow off-site redundant backup storage) .
What are relative speeds of USB vs. Firewire vs. eSATA ?
I suspect eSATA connection may be considerably faster … how to install eSATA on mid-2010 Mac Pro desktop ( dual hex-core processors)?
( The quicker and easier backup protocol is, the more likely one is to use it to backup on a routine repetitive basis.)
    Thanks

Adding a USB 3.0+eSATA PCIe card, which The hatter mentions, is the best solution that I've found. See http://eshop.macsales.com/item/CalDigit/FASTA6GU3/. The card is not cheap, but the USB 3.0 works flawlessly (which can't be assumed; ask me how I know) and the eSATA connection allows booting from the connected drive. Grant Bennet-Alder's point about HD speed is important to consider; in addition, the size of the individual files being backed up and where on the backup disk they're going will affect overall transfer speed. For example, using the USB 3.0 connection on that CalDigit card going to a Toshiba 3TB external, the transfer rate for a big file (say a virtual machine file) from an internal SSD boot drive was about 145 MB/sec while a bunch of little files might drop to 30 MB/sec and both rates decrease as an inner partition on the external is used. All told, a nearly 700 GB backup took under 1.5 hours. Using a HD as the source added almost an extra hour, though a WD external was used for that. Using a WD green drive plugged into this http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/FWU3ES2HDK/ with an eSATA connection took about 2.5 hours also, but that was bootable whereas the USB 3.0 connection is not.
Another point to consider is that USB 3.0 is ubiquitous on PC's now so there's lots of price competition for externals; not so much for eSATA externals.

  • I just installed a new Samsung 840 to my 2010 mac pro as a second hard drive. It is not showing up in my startup drive in system preferences

I have a 2010 Mac Pro with a 1TB HHD. I just installed and formatted a Samsung 840 Pro SSD. I want to install a clean copy of Mavericks to the SSD and have the computer boot up to it. How do I install Mavericks to the SSD? Also, the Samsung SSD does not show up as an option in Start up in system preferences. Please help!

What OS do you want to install? If you bought your MP early enough, it may have shipped with actual install discs, and you could use those. If it shipped with Lion or newer, you will have to follow one of the procedures mentioned by Niel.
You can get Mavericks from the App Store. Before you run the installer, copy (copy, not move) the whole "Install Mavericks" download to a backup location so that you can install it again if necessary. The installer in the Applications Folder will be deleted after installation is complete, so a copy is needed.

  • Mid 2010 Mac Pro boot camp recognizing 1.86GB RAM

I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro w/ 6GB RAM and a dedicated video card. Win7 32-bit is boot camped on it. I know 32-bit Windows can only use 3.75GB of RAM. However, this Mac Pro is only seeing 1.86GB.
Since this is Win7, no boot.ini is available for /3GB switch and editbcd /set increaseuserva 3072 did nothing, even after clearing out the variable and resetting it to 3072.
I came across a post saying UEFI/BIOS for Mac Pros cannot see more than 1.86GB RAM in a Windows 32-bit environment. Is this true? It was only the one post and I forgot where I saw it.  If not,  how do I resolve this issue? If not, that's fine. I can format and install Win7 64-bit if needed. I want to confirm 64-bit Win7 will recognize more than 1.86GB of RAM. Any input?
    Thank you.

64 bit Windows will see and use all your ram.

  • 2010 Mac Pro boot 10.8.5 with 2nd drive?

I have a 2010 Mac Pro at work and I'd like to match the OS and ProTools setup that I have at home (MBP with OS 10.8.5 and ProTools 10/11).
The Mac Pro is currently OS 10.7.4 and I'm using ProTools 9. OS 10.7.4 doesn't support ProTools 10/11.
Is it possible to add a drive to my Power Mac that boots in OS 10.8.5?
There are currently 2 drives in the Mac Pro slots. I'm assuming I can add a third and boot off it?
    thanks

Yes, you can do that. You will need a Mountain Lion installer or be able to clone a running Mountain Lion system to the drive.

  • Does anyone know how to access the sound software on a Mid 2010 Mac Pro? I have a Logitech Z906 5.1 surround system with fiber optic in and out, I only seem to be able to get stereo and simulated 5.1 sound .

A mid 2010 Mac Pro, trying to get 5.1 surround out of the onboard sound software using fiber optic out connected to a Logitech Z906 5.1 speaker sys. with fiber optic in and out, all I get is stereo and simulated 5.1 sound out of the speakers. In utilities, Audio Midi Setup I can't get the Mac to see the Logitech speakers for 5.1 speaker configuration. Without being made to feel like a dummy, does anyone have a solution? Thanks, Carl

Hello John, I figured it was a signal issue. All the speakers fire and the sound is great. I was running the speakers thru a Dell PC with a Creative X-Fi Elite Pro, THX Certified, 7.1 soundcard using a fiber optic from the Mac Pro to the Z906's, it worked great until the Dell died!!! When I bought the soundcard from Creative I also bought the GigaWorks S750, THX Certified, 700 watt, 7.1 speaker system, used the speakers for 11 years and then the woofer/amp said "I QUIT" Creative quit making the speaker system and the sound card. The satellite speakers from the Creative GigaWorks speaker system still sound great (rated at 78 watt each) and are a little better speaker than the one's that came with the Z906 and the wattage from the 906 is sufficient to drive the satellites without any distortion. Thank you for addressing my issue, you confirmed what I suspected all along, just needed to hear it from someone with the same setup.
One last question, I purchased a Diamond Multimedia USB Soundcard, can't use the fiber optic(not supported by Mac) but the green, tan and black RCA's plug in and produces adequetly. When you plug your 906's into the Mac Pro using the fiber optic how do you set your speaker configuration? When I plug into the mac pro with fiber optic the 'Audio Midi Setup' does not seem to see the 5.1 configuration. Any thoughts there?

Hello, having a problem with Logic 9 on a Mac Pro.Working on a lenghty song and apparently session got corrupted.Doesnt let me export tracks, program crashes.Already tried start brand new session with the tracks imported into it but still wont export.Suggestions?

Thanks, Ian. Yeah, that's how I do it now...or with the controls in the left side pane. Still, I would have liked that quick on-the-spot edit capability...especially while sketching.

Sorry Mark, you are out of luck as it does not do that - it works the same as L8. The way I would achieve that with more accuracy and control would be to route all the tracks you want to fade to a Bus then use volume automation on the bus. To do this you will need to add a standard audio track, then re-assign it using (Control Click on the track header) to the Bus track. You can then automate volume/plugins etc on the Bus track.

  • 10.7.3 USB Lockup on mid-2010 Mac Pro

    Hello,
I updated my mid-2010 Mac Pro to update 10.7.3 this morning. Since then, I have had three occasions today, each one worse than the previous, where all USB devices connected just locked up completely and were totally unresponsive.
This includes my keyboard, mouse, and video camera.  Those are the only devices that are connected to this computer.
One at a time I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting each device with no success.  Interestingly on a couple of occasions, my keyboard would stop working but the mouse daisy chained out of the keyboard worked without any issues.
The most recent incident absolutely everything locked up and the only option I had was to do a hard reset of the computer.  When I logged back in I quickly enabled the Bluetooth support and grabbed my wireless keyboard and mouse so that I can work.
Has anyone else encountered this yet?  I know there aren't that many Mac Pro users any more.
In the meantime, Time Machine is performing a full backup and I think I will downgrade back to 10.7.2.
I wish I could go back to 10.6.8 but since this Mac Pro shipped with 10.7.2, it will not accept an earlier version of OS X.  :-(

Wow, Same issue here on my Early 2008 Mac Pro. After 10.7.3 update, my USB ports have been behaving erratically. The problem actually seems to be getting progressively worse too.
From what Ive gathered so fat, it seems almost as if the ports are now underpowered. Plugging a keyboard directly into the USB port seems to work indefinitely. As soon as I add other devices to same port, the new device won't work.
My first assumption was that my USB hub was shot, but then I tried the ports on the back of my Cinema Display and they were all jacked up too.
I tried plugging another keyboard directly into the front USB port but That didn't work either, as it seems there was no power for it due to the other devices plugged into the back. I unplugged everything but the front keyboard and it still didn't work until I restarted it.
Extremely hard to troubleshoot how this issue is behaving. Like I said, erratic is probably best description.
This is the worst bug I've personally experienced after an update to an OS since I've been using Macs on System 7.
I really hope Apple fixes this ASAP.
