2010 Mac Pro for video work: ATI 5770 or 5870? performance vs. fan noise

I'm planning to swap my old Mac Pro (2006 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 4 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT) for a 2010 Mac Pro model, because I need more speed for video (FCP 7, Color, Magic Bullet Looks) and photo (Lightroom 3, Photo Shop CS5) work. I'm thinking of the 6-Core (3.33 GHz) Mac Pro with 24 GB RAM and ATI Radeon 5870. I read a first review which said, that the 5870 is VERY noisy (fans), and now I'm little afraid. Is the 5870 really that loud, and will it bring clear advantages over the ATI 5770 (I dont't do 3D work yet)? I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

I've got the 6-core w/5870 on order, so don't yet have it myself. I've been looking into this issue also, as noise is a concern.
This (http://techpowerup.com/reviews/ATI/RadeonHD5870/29.html) test showed me that the card is pretty typical at idle, but fairly loud when loaded.
I don't expect I'll be loading my video card much with the work that I do right now, so wasn't as concerned. In the end, I guess I'll find out when my new machine arrives.

Our showroom unit arrived 8/24.
Set it up and loaded it with my demo content. Motion rendering is noticeably faster.
I have yet to thrash it hard, but it's certainly no louder than its predecessor as far as I can tell.

From iMac to Mac Pro for video work.. suggestions please!

Hello all! Soon I'll be upgrading from my 2.66 GHz quad core iMac with 4gb of RAM to a new Mac Pro. The idea is to increase my productivity with applications such as After Effects & Final Cut Pro by hopefully decreasing time spent rendering/buffering/burning. The iMac has been working really well all this time, but a bit faster would be better!
I have about $4,000 to work with for a new machine. I welcome your thoughts on the best bang for my buck, be that a new/refurbished from Apple or used from eBay. Thanks everyone!

The performance of the 2009 and later models is nearly twice that of the previous models with the same specs due to architectural changes including Hyper Threading.
All the Xeon Macs are keeping their value very well, and that means there are very few real deals on eBay.

Mac Pro for Video Editing?

So I have an awesome Mac Pro computer at work all well equiped with all the bells and wistles for video editing and now I'm looking to upgrade my machine at home which is currently just a macbook pro with a second monitor.
My one concern is that the Mac Pro has not been updated in sometime. Obviously the mac bro route would be best for me being in video production so I can easily upgrade component with the never ending technology that keeps changing. Now the concern about buying a Mac Pro right now is the possibilites of it being upgraded. Now I understand things are obviously always being upgraded and things are never up to date for very long. However I'm concerned that if in like 3-4 months they came out with something and changed the decision that I maybe screwed for upgrade components along the way.
Just thought I'd get some insight from some of you and what your suggestions maybe?

production never = bleeding edge, go for a mature well tested proven design - expect to see firmware change, compatibility issues, and 3-4 months for a unified build and drivers rolled out, no?
a nice $2200 "hold me over the hump" for the next 6-12 months for now, W3690/X3690 DIY (the w3680 3.33 6-core is mere $620)
no easy answer that I see with all the products Intel has on their plates.

External storage for early 08 mac pro for video storage and editing

Early 08 Mac Pro mod 3.1, 2x Intel 2.8 Quad Core Processors. Bus speed 1.6 Ghz. 10 GB DDR2 FB-Dimm 800 MHz. USB2, Firewire 400, 800. ATI Radeon HD 2600 PCIe 256 mbVRAM. Currently running OS 10.6.8.
I use machine for photo and video storage and editing. I tried using 2x 3TB and 2x1TB HDD internally ( 8 TB total). All are Seagate Barracuda SATA 7200. Experienced constant spinning wheel and lockup requiring manual shutdown. I had upgraded to Lion and to Maverick. Did not help so I did a clean install of primary with Snow Leopard and did not install past 10.6.8. Works now if I don’t exceed 3.5 TB internally. I also discovered that my Disk Permissions experienced voluminous corruption that could not be repaired if I installed Java for Mac OS 10.6 Update 17 as suggested each time I check for software updates.
I need to be able to have a total of about six TBs available in my system for storage and editing of video via Imovie. I don’t know the maximum of HDD storage that can be used in the four internal bays without causing lockup and corruption. If 3.5 TB is about the max, then I would like to have some ability to have external storage via firewire 800 if that would facility fast enough transfer for either video edition and or playback. I don’t know if thunderbolt can be installed via PCI card. I could add a SATA PCI card. However, I assume that would cause the same problem as experienced with 8 TBs installed internally in the four bays.
I would appreciate any suggestions.

Yes, I've got a total of to TB and I'm running Snow Leopard. If your hardware checks out, that pretty much makes it a software problem,,, reinstall the OS?
Does the High Point Technologies SATA3 PCIe connect to eternal drive enclosures or does it somehow connect to drives in some of your four internal bays?
Highpoint makes several RocketRAID 2700 series SATA3 controllers for Mac with external mini-SAS connectors, probably the cleanest/least expensive external hook-up. They also offer a combo internal/external board that (for marketing reasons) is listed as not working for internals with Mac Pro. I believe that this is due to pressure from Apple (who apparently does some business with High Point Tech) but to the best of my knowledge it will. Technically, the "not supported" statement is true since all the internal bays are tied to the motherboard SATA 2 controller, but this can be remedied with a special cable. HOWEVER... the boards are not bootable, so your system disk needs to be on the motherboard controller.
In truth, I bought one of their 8-port "internal only" boards designated for PC only and flashed it so the Mac Pro sees it as a 2722 board, so I have 8 internal ports. I'm not recommending you do the same unless you're pretty geeky, but the 2721 would give you half-and-half or the 2722 would give you 8 external with no mods to the board.

IMac vs the new Mac Pro for video editing in FCPX?

I am currently using a macbook air for all my editing and rendering of videos in FCPX. The editing process is reasonably smooth when dealing with shorter clips, but when I tried to edit multicam clips, things started to slow down. Also, the rendering and compression processes are tedious. I am planning to edit and process a much larger number of videos in the next years to come, so I have decided to do a serious upgrade of my system.
For the moment, I am torn between a maxed out iMac 27", which would be the cheapest alternative, and the 6 core Mac Pro or 4 core Mac Pro.
When I look at benchmarks of the new Mac Pro's in Geekbench, the iMac is never very far away in terms of performance. Does tests like this tell anything about how well the Mac Pro will perform in FCP? Does the hardware in the Mac Pro have features which makes it superior to the iMac, in other ways than for example the "pure power" of the CPU and GPU?

Intel Xeon processors are designed to run 24/7 and stay cool and under load.
Mac Pro so far hold up strongly for years, easy to add and upgrade RAM and processor, and maybe, hopefully, even the twin GPUs. Thunderbolt2 for all your projects and storage as well.
6 or 8-cores is going to walk away from iMac which is breathing hard and not designed for constant heat. Haswell was designed to conserve and reduce.

IMac or Mac Pro for video editing?

Should I invest in a Mac Pro or an IMAC for my video editing needs?
I am using Final Cut Pro x (latest version) on my late 2009 model MacBook Pro (with upgrades)

Why would and HD video be cutting while playing on such a machine with 12GB of GDDR2 SDRAM?

GDDR refers to Graphics DDR, not system
12-core would be two 6-core processors
All you need is really one good 4-core cpu
12GB is fine though light for 12-core because most such users need more and press it harder to do more.
It may be where and what storage drives and their makeup and what else is running.

2010 Mac Pro, Overheat, Fans Won't Speed Up

I was using my 2010(5.1) quad core single CPU mac pro for video conversion using Handbrake. I have the Hardware monitor installed and was able to see the core temperatures from the odd core numbers(actual cores) went up to 86+ degree celcius(NOT Fahrenheit). What I noticed was that the Fan speeds were still pretty much the same as when the computer is idle(a very slight increase). Do we both have defective computers? Or something else is going on.
I realized these CPUs will shut itself off when it reach critical temperature(might cause permanent damage) at about 95-100 degree Celcius, but I don't understand why my mac pro doesn't just boost up its fans at that point closer to the hard shutdown(86+ celcius).
Does anyone that have the 2009 or newer mac pro(4.1 or 5.1) knows at what core temperatures that the fans speed up considerably?

Using smcFanControl, both one of the fan speeds and one of the temperature readings is always in the menu bar. When I see it approach 100ºF, I switch to a higher fan speed combination, so I'm usually ahead of whatever SMC will eventually do automatically. Right now checking Check My Temp, and using Apple's default fan speed settings, CPU A Core is 152ºF, its heatsink is 90ºF, the BOOSTA default fan speed is 800 RPM but the actual speed is 1070 RPM. Of interest is that the iStat Pro reading for CPU A is also 90ºF, suggesting that it may not be reading the core temp, assuming that core temp reading is correct. Ambient is about 68º. One thing that may make a bit of difference is that I'm filtering the air in the CPU tunnel (the bottom section with the intake fan up front, the CPU fan in the processor tray, and the exhaust fan in back) since that's the hardest to clean out. That may restrict the air flow a bit but the filter does capture dust and, especially in warm weather, I make sure to keep it clean.

Best Video card for Mid 2010 Mac Pro

I'm currently running a Mid 2010 Mac Pro with a 5870 video card in it. I feel that it's bottlenecking processes, and want to upgrade it. I'm not looking to upgrade the computer itself, but want to get the fastest video card that I can.
Looking for suggestions, and links if possible to what you know works.

Why do you a) need a "fast" video card, and b) think it is the bottleneck (it might)?
Maybe you need dual AMD's and a 2nd 5870 (with the addition of 2nd 450W PSU to drive it).

Do you have some SSDs for system and scratch? that often is where you can attack a bottleneck and improve performance.
Graphics can need as much RAM as possible. Dual or single cpu? many are choosing to install one or two faster cpus of the 3.4GHz variety to help.

Problems with EFI Firmware Update to 1.5 for mid 2010 Mac Pro, and sleep issues

Hello to the community, I have run into an annoying issue.
I need to update the EFI firmware on my 8 core mid-2010 Mac Pro. I downloaded the EFI update from the apple website from here : http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1321
But everytime I download it, as I click to install, it gives me the message:
Alert
This software is not supported on your system.
But clearly this is the correct EFI for my computer. I tried burning the Firmware restoration onto a CD from here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1320
But the computer did not respond the way it said it should (with the 3 flashes/beeps etc.) and have the optical drive open for the CD.
So I'm completely stuck.
*Also my Mac Pro had issues with sleep, when I put it to sleep, sometimes when I try to bring it back, it restarts itself, and other times, it just turns itself on and the monitor screen remains black, so I have to hit the power button to turn it off then back on again. This only happnens when the computer has been put to sleep for a slightly extended period of time, roughly 20mins +, sometimes longer. I was trying to solve this problem by first updating the firmware because I think it could be related to that, but I've had this problem with the firmware so I couldn't find out. This is actually the bigger problem for me because it will affect my work. I am currently using an iMac while I fix up this mac pro.
I'm a music composer so I've upgraded many aspects of my system due to work. I have a 1TB Samsung 840 evo SSD, 2 seagate 2 TB HDD, and 1 WD 1TB HD (the original one in the mac pro), along with 32 GB of RAM. So my only problems are the firmaware and the weird activity when the computer is put to sleep.
Some help would be greatly appreciated!

DVD/Lightscribe drive for new (late 2010 Mac Pro?

Does anyone know a source for an internal DVD w/ Lightscribe drive for a late 2010 Mac Pro? I want to install it in the second drive bay. I got one from OWC, but the depth of the DVD drawer was about twice that of the original drive that came with the Mac Pro. It would have been able to fit through the drop cover on the front of the Pro, but would not clear the internal rack components. It fit in the rack nicely with the 4 screws lining up properly, but would then not open more than about an eighth of an inch before hitting the internal rack frame, causing it to close. Thanks.

Bummer! The instructions included with the drive did not mention thi. When I called OWC customer service she said that sometimes you had to remove the bezel from the Mac. I told her the Pro had no bezel. She said that the drive info did not specifically say it would fit a 2010 Pro a d gave me a RMA.'nmh bad for not questioning further. Thanks.
