2010 Mac Pro, Sapphire 7950 Mac Edition, and Boot Camp

A few months ago, I installed a Sapphire 7950 Mac Edition GPU in my 2010 Mac Pro (3.2GHz quad-core). I don't have Boot Camp installed. Recently, I tried setting up a Boot Camp install with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit but have been unsucessful.
I use the Apple Boot Camp Assistant (v5.1.2), use a USB flash drive (for Windows support software), and a Windows 7 Pro 64-0bit DVD. The Assistant runs, partitions my drive (I have a blank HFS+ drive that the Assistant partitions into Mac and Win partitions), and then reboots. The computer reboots but the screen is black and I cannot detect any activity.
I suspect that the Windows  installer that the Assistant sets up does not have drivers for my 7950.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Ted

I'm very late to this game but thought it might be useful to reply as there have been people looking at this. The problem sounds like the 7950 is in PC mode and not in Mac mode. With the card in PC mode, you'll get a black screen instead of the Bootcamp option at startup.
There's a switch on the card to change between modes (only do it when the system is powered down). Have a look in your "About this Mac". If it says your card is an AMD 7xxx, you're in PC mode. If it says your card is an AMD 7950, you've got it in the correct mode.
Be warned that my Sapphire 7950 came with PC mode flashed to both positions of the switch and I had to beat the Sapphire support people for ages to get it properly flashed. Despite sending the card back to Sapphire, in the end I had to put the card in a PC and flash it myself.

Ok so I finally got Windows to install on to my Mac Pro. This is a long explanation because it includes a lot of information for users who may be having the same problems I had. My problem is at the bottom, but for those of you who are still stuck on the blank screen, READ ON!
Many have users been having problems installing Windows on Mac Pros with the ATI x1900 video card.
For Example, after running boot camp and loading XP the screen would go blank.
To get around this use the DVI to VGA addapter and plug a seperate monitor in, once the computer has finshed installing Windows, then install the drivers.
At this point my graphics card was still not installed correctly. I downloaded the driver off of the ATI website, however I kept recieving errors. So I unpakaged the driver and had the computer find a driver in that folder. Once this was done I went back and installed the remaining software without errors!
Now, currently I am still having to use a second monitor because my HD 23 inch was just showing a blank screen. To fix this I,
    1. Installed the video card controller from the ATI website for the ATI X1900
    2. Opened advanced settings and supported HD 1080i
    3. Connected my HD monitor in the second DVI slot
    4.exteneded onto that monitor
    5. Switched that monitor to primary
    And Perfect! It works
However, this is where problems began to arise. After customizing everything to my taste, I ran a test within this same program which sets all of your graphics card's settings to the optimal setting. I walked away because it was taking a long time, and when i came back my screen was totally messed up. It looked as if the settings had been changed and it had been moved up. With the top of the windows screen down where the dock is supposed to be, and then the dock right above that. I cannot correct this and it is extremely frustrating!
Is there anyway for me to correct this? It is normal in Mac Mode, but in XP i can't correct it. It just seems like there is one problem after another!

so did you install the bootcamp drivers?
because i had no luck with ati's drivers from their web site but apples drivers worked fine.

Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant do not restore MS Windows, it only does the OS X partition. All of your Windows stuff must be backed up and restore using a MS Windows application. If no one on this forum is able to answer your question then I'd repost it on a Parallels forum to see how other Windows users approach this.

  • Mac Pro as a Web Server and Workstation

I'm thinking about getting a better computer, and plan on launching an intensive web app as well as some other web sites. The original plan was to get an xserve or two, and as the need arises add xsan to the setup.
I see that the mac pro is fairly powerful and would make a great server, I could start with a mac pro, then add an xserve and xsan to the setup down the line. What I'd like to know is how it would hold up as a server, while I was using it for work at the same time.. could it handle both and how would it perform?
*To give an idea of the type of setup:*
    8core 3.2Ghz
ram as needed min 4gb up to 32gb
separate hard disks for work stuff and served files.
    two monitors
    *While running:*
    photoshop
    illustrator
    dreamweaver
    fireworks
    flash
    word
    flex
    3 parallels virtual machines(2 windows 1 linux)
    firefox with 200+tabs
    4/5 other browsers running.
ftp/mail/calendar and all those other peripheral apps
So to sum up, would using all those apps affect serving a couple websites much, and is there a demo/video/specs of a mac pro(preferably as tricked out as possible) functioning as a server and/or running high end apps doing things like compiling and applying advanced photoshop filters to large files so I can get a sense of performance and speed. It's just hard to visualize what the system could actually handle and numbers don't mean much to me.

It is bad form to use a server as a workstation. You will be running server software, I assume, which is not really client software for which applications are written. You will also be hogging resources one way or the other. You may want to consider a Mini to serve up your website until you can afford an xServe. As far as Xsan, that is really high horse power, and is a good fit for video editing (you need two sxServes and a fiber switch to do an Xsan). You can probably get by with just a RAID attached to the server if you are just hosting web sites, at least in the beginning.

I have a Mac Pro tower am running OSX and iTunes will not work. It has always worked flawlessly. I can see all my iTunes content- my playlists, my songs et cetera, But I cannot play anything. The progress bar is  'stuck'...any suggestions?

Thanks. I have been using iTunes since its inception and have never had a problem...I'm using the latest version. The progress bar is the bar that moves when you're playing a song..it just won't start when I double click on a song,..have tried quitting, rebooting etc but nothing works. Apple are useless-they have told me twice they've tried to call me 'momentarily', but I've been waiting by the phone, and they definitely have not tried to call...

  • Overall happiness with Mac Pro and Boot camp/XP

    Hi all,
I am a current Windows user and need to upgrade my home computer soon. My wife (teacher) has an imac g5 at home an loves it. I am thinking of getting a refurb mac pro when Leopard is released and use Boot Camp with XP Pro. I am not a big gamer so that is not a concern. I am just checking to see how happy others using this configuration are, and maybe reccomend a configuration (separate hard drives etc.)
Thanks to all for any feedback.

I love mine. Its quiet, launches native apps practically instantly (CS2 takes a few seconds longer), and performs all the system instensive stuff I ask of it quickly and without complaint.
And while it kills me to use Windows anymore, I need to feed my old gaming habit for which Bootcamp is great. I also need to do web browser testing for IE, and Parallels makes it super convienent.
If you have need of a system this powerful, I can totally recommend it. Without knowing what you're specific needs are, the sort of "all-around" config would be:
    2.66 Ghz
2 GBs of RAM minimum (third party RAM is cheaper).
Buy extra drives if you need the storage space. But don't buy these from Apple. Western Digital drives are good and quiet.
Airport and Bluetooth options are pretty self explanatory.
If you don't game, and you don't use GPU sucking apps like Motion or Maya, you won't need the video card upgrade.
I could give you more specifics if you tell us what the system will be used for.

  • I have a Mac Pro OS 10.7.5 and have a DVD+R disc with files on it, but it ejects the disk after about 10 seconds--what to do?  How can I get the data off this disc?  I can see it has been already burned, so files are on there?

Try cleaning the lens and see if that will restore functionality to the DVD drive.  Use a DVD lens cleaning disk, if you have a can of compressed air, shoot some into the slot or wrap a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth)  around a business card and insert it gently inside the slot.
If no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and get a free diagnosis from them.
    Ciao.

  • Mac pro cinema display cuts out and can't access Mac with screen sharing

    Hi
A weird thing has started happening to my Mac Pro today. After using it for a few minutes the cinema display it is attached to on the Mac Pro just goes black. The Mac Pro is clearly still on - the light is on and i can hear the fans. The Mac Pro shows up on my local network and i can connect to it and access files from my Macbook, but screen sharing doesn't work (i just get the message 'contacting mac pro' and nothing else) and i can't connect to shared iTunes library either, which makes me think it is not just a display issue. I cannot wake the computer with the mouse or keyboard, which makes me think it isn't just a sleep issue. All i can do is physically turn the Mac Pro off, start it up and it will start up successfully and then work for a few more minutes before i get the same problem. I have reset the PRAM and SMC and still have the same problems. Can anyone suggest anything else i can try?
I should mention that i have another problem with the Mac Pro in that it has been spontaneously waking up from sleep and starting up from shutdown, and i still haven't resolved this. I don't know if it is connected to the above issue.
    thanks
    nick

I have experienced almost the exact same thing with my new 2008 Mac Pro and my 30" Apple display. It has happened to me twice in the last few weeks. The first time I chalked it up to a fluke, but now that it's happened again I searched the forums. In both cases I've had music playing in iTunes which continues playing, goes on to the next track, and so on. So the machine has not crashed in full. I too can connect to the files via another computer on the network, but cannot share the screen.
I have not had the sleep issues you have had.
I'll look at the link you provided in your next post to see where that gets me, but I wanted to let you know you were not alone on this one.

  • Playstation 3 Digital out to Mac Pro 3,1 Digital in and out again through Konnekt 6

So I got a used Mac Pro 3,1 on craigslist and it's a beast.  Only problem is that the superdrive was broken.  No big deal really, but I've been thinking about how it'd be cool to be able to watch blu-ray movies on it. I Could just buy an 80 dollar drive, or I could use my Playstation.  I've got optical outputs on the PS3 and inputs on the Mac, so my question is what the easiest way to route the sound would be.  Just using audio/midi setup? Usually inputs need to be "armed" so that there isn't that constant stream of info and I imagine with digital it's the same?  Would I have to open up Logic and do some kind of soundflower bed magic?
    Thanks!

Ok so I'm home now and continued my seach... and found this:

I won't be able to try it until back in the studio tomorrow but it may just be what I need - will report back here. Seems that it is an OS issue though and not an Adobe one.
