2010 macbook pro too slow

I have a macbook pro (2010) running mountain lion and it is now running so ridiculously slow its impossible to do anything. Photoshop elements keeps crashing every time i use it. I read on the forums about an activity monitor but I don't have it and don't know where to get it from. Any help would be greatly appreciated thankyou
Jodi

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro extremely slow

Hi! I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro,which suddenly decided to start moving at snail speed for me. Applications take 5 minutes to open and when they do, they usually crash and I have to force quit. Finder runs pretty smooth but it is also slower than it used to be.
    I have:
    4GB Ram
    500GB capacity hardrive, 173GB available
I have booted in safe mode, done both a PRAM and SMC reset, is there anything else I can try before I spend a ton of money getting it fixed?
Thanks in advance, and sorry for any typos, I am on mobile.

Assume the boot drive is dying and have a extra copy of your user files on another regular external drive in addition to any TimeMachine or bootable clone you may have.

For instance we have no idea what operating system version your using.
What do you mean by snail speed? Do you see spinning beach balls or is there a runaway process, is the machine hot?
Slow booting, loading programs or slow writing to the drive? Slow online only?

  • Wi-Fi Slow for Mid-2010 MacBook Pro in Clamshell Mode

'd like to add my experience the posts which I have see regarding slow speeds in clamshell. I have a mid-2010 Macbook Pro 13 and when I first attempted to use it with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse - I too experienced significant slowing of the wi-fi speed. About 3 months ago, we swapped our existing router (non-Apple) for an Airport Extreme. That seems to have somehow cured the problem. While this does not address the issue with a 2008 product, I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has similar experience and/or if this potentially corrects the problem for other current model (or earlier model) Unibody owners. I hope that this isn't something that might evaporate with a software update someday in the future.

    Hello thedoctor8706
Reset your NVRAM and test to see if that resolves your issues. Typically that will resolve video, volume, startup disk selection, and kernel panic issues.

The only observations are that the backup drive is deemed too small and the quite long list of diagnostic reports dated between  Jan 18, 2015 (which I believe is the day I upgraded to Yosemite) & today the latest Yosemite update was installed on Jan 28, 2015
Any further assistance will be appreciated

  • Mid 2010 macbook pro slow to sleep. No print queu issues.

Hey everyone! My Mid 2010 macbook pro slow is slow to go to sleep. I have read several community forums and I've checked for old print jobs (which seems to be a common issue) and have found none. I've also reset all printers and jobs.  Anyways, it takes 35 to 60 seconds to go sleep (until fan/harddrive turns off/I see blinking white light).  This slow sleep occurs even with a complete fresh install of Mavericks, and even after installing a new SSD. I am honestly at a loss.
I did the "pmset -g log" command and I have found two reoccurring things that I think might be the reason (though I don't really understand it fully). I commonly see "TimedOut InternalPreventSleep "com.apple.powermanagement.darkwakelinger" 00:00:15" commonly and "PreventUserIdleSystemSleep "Address Book Source Sync" 00:00:30".  I have bolded both of these below:

I’ve tried running 10.10 on quite a few different computers with 4GB of RAM and a standard mechanical hard drive and all of them performed worse with Yosemite than they did with Mavericks (10.9). And about a year ago I found that they performed better with Mt Lion (10.8) than Mavericks. Each version of the Mac OS has required more memory than the version that came before it and that means that every couple of years the minimum acceptable RAM is increased. Apple signaled this quietly at the Apple Store - only one computer now ships with 4GB of RAM. (And I can tell you from personal experience that in that configuration it is not fun to use.)
Bottom line: you need at least 8GB of RAM or an SSD. Both are better. In the meantime run as lean a machine as possible. MacKeeper is a waste of money no matter what anyone might tell you. At best it is not necessary and is a waste of money.

  • Wifi slow on 2010 macbook pro but not IPad or IPhones

Internet has been intermitted and  slow periodically on my 2010 macbook pro, IOS is up to date 10.8.5. Not a router issue. IPad & IPhones work fast on wifi. even with other devices off of wifi still slow.  tried switching to 8.8.8.8 still no dice.

Hold down the option key and select the Wi-Fi menu in the menu bar. What values are shown for the following?
    PHY Mode
    Channel
    Security
    Signal/Noise or RSSI
    Transmit Rate
Please do not post the BSSID, as that information is private.
Now hold down the option key again and select
     ▹ System Information... ▹ Network ▹ Wi-Fi
Compare the two-letter Country Code with the ISO code for your country. Does it match? The code X0 means that the country couldn't be determined. The code X3 means South America, not otherwise specified.

  • 2010 Macbook Pro is running SUPER slow.  Almost unusable.

My 2010 Macbook Pro is running so slow that it's almost unusable due to the buffering of data and the color wheel spinning incessantly.  I close applications, restart and nothing helps.  I have not downloaded any clean up software.  I teach and am dependent on my computer for EVERYTHING I do.
    HELP PLEASE!!

Back up your Mac if you have not already done so. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
Determine if the same problems exist in "Safe Mode". Read below.
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.
If you are still experiencing problems more information will be required. If you don't know where to start, EtreCheck can help with that. Read below.
Apple Support Communities contributor etresoft wrote a very useful app to quickly gather certain system information that may help point to a cause of this problem. Read about it here. It contains a link to download EtreCheck. Do not download it from anywhere else (such as may be found by following the results of an Internet search).
Click Open - etresoft contributes to this forum frequently and can be considered a trustworthy developer.
It will take a moment to run as it collects its data.
Copy and paste its output in a reply.
Do not be concerned about anything that says "Problem" or “failed” or anything else that may appear in red.
EtreCheck was designed to remove any personal information (such as your computer's name and serial numbers) but if you see anything that looks like an email address or any other personal information that should not be divulged to others, please delete or obscure that information when you post the reply.
When you are finished with EtreCheck, quit the program. It occupies very little space, and you can keep it or drag it to the Trash as you wish.

  • 2010 MacBook Pro - something is wrong (it is very slow)

    Hi folks!
    I am using 2010 MacBook Pro, 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3...
It is 320 GB and 90 GB free.
Computer started to act crazy 2 months ago. But now the symptoms started to be intolerable.
It takes so long during start up, also even it is on completely, every time I opened first program (even after 10 minutes) it freezes for some time and then continue to work. Almost every program open very late, and when I click the icon on the dock to quit the program for most of the programs, computer freezes and then says application not responding, therefore I always click force quit.
Sometime even if I dont push the computer so much, it freezes and quits the program that I am using at that time. And sometimes (let's say I want to open activity monitor under utilities), I click application folder on the dock, then click utilities folder but nothing happens and it does not open the folder, then I again try to click Application folder, then utilities but again it does not open the folder, after 3 or 4 times, it open the utilities folder then I am able to click activity monitor in the folder, and it opens it.
Also I started to hear hard drive sound a while ago, just like external harddiscs that seems will be broken soon. In case, I back up it with time machine...
Additionally, is it normal Google Chrome uses so many memory? When I watch a video in Chrome, everything becomes even more slow.
And last thing, when I use skype, camera quits spontaneously, sometimes when I click start my camera, it starts, sometimes it says camera is used by another application and it does not start it. Also, skype just started to become (switches between) offline and online spontaneously.
What is wrong with my computer? Should I format it?

Bootcamp is installed by default but if you have not touched bootcamp to install your Windows partition, you shouldn't encounter the problem I was describing.
As for Parallels - just thinking out loud. When you talk about "Running chrome", are you actually running chrome on Mac or are you running chrome in Windows (Parallels).
Also, do you keep your Parallels running all the time when you're not actually using it?

  • Mid-2010 MacBook Pro: freezing and spinning wheel

    Hi there,
I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro (I know, old) that's been in very good condition. I upgraded my OS to Mavericks in May, which is when it started being slow and crashing/freezing around twice a week. For example, just doing normal things like surfing the web or checking the Airport or battery life will suddenly freeze the cursor which will then turn into the spinning wheel of death. Sometimes I can wait it out if it's a few minutes but sometimes I have to manually turn off the computer and then turn it back on when it's been hours of no change or improvement. I know it's probably best to downgrade back to Snow Leopard but I'd really like to keep my OS. Are there other things I can do to optimize my Mac? I've tried keeping fewer files on the desktop and emptying out the trash often and it seemed to help for a while. Other suggestions?
    Thanks for reading!

Wow, that post looks like a mess...I will try to make it more readable.
Thanks for your reply. I had to wait a few days for the problem to crop up again. I followed your instructions to the best of my ability. The thing is that the problem (i.e. freezing and spinning wheel) happened at 8:19 and the closest messages in the Console were are time stamped 8:17 and 8:25. So I will put them here for you to look at if you don't mind:

  • Macbook Pro Extremely Slow All Of A Sudden, Wiped Completely and Problem Persists

My 2012 Macbook Pro has slowed down to nearly a crawl in just about everything I try to do, espescially with anything that utilizes the internet.  Activity Moniter initially revealed the issue to be the Kernal_Task proccess using too much memory as well as com.apple.finder. Also, Spotlight was indexing constantly until I disabled my disk from being accesed by it within the privacy tab of Spotlight Preference. The spinning beach ball of death has appeared more times in the past few days then I have ever seen in the entire year I've had my Macbook Pro.
I literally tried everything that I could find. I've done everything from resetting the Pram and the other thing (I forgot the name but when you hold down four keys at once during start up). I've tried killing proccesses, rebooting my mac several times, closing out programs, deleting all applications, just about eveything you can think of. Safari, Google Chrome, and Firefox were all extremely slow. Attemping to verify disk permissions or repair failed because of the sheer amount of time it was taking. I let the computer sit for an entire day and it seemed to make little to no progress in repairing the disk. I even booted the computer in Safe Mode and it was stil performing poorly.
The issue is NOT Hard Drive space on my Macbook. I know this because it was working perfectly fine and then all of sudden started behaving like this. All of these issues ultimately led to me doing something many others wouldn't, WIPING MY ENTIRE MAC AND RESTORING FROM FACTORY SETTINGS.
The issue STILL persists although not as severe. Internet browing is bearable but nowhere near perfomring as it should. Even simple task such as opening up a new tab or switching tabs results in a spinning beach ball for about 5-10 seconds. Opening an application such as Pages or Twitter results in a spinning beach ball for 5-10 seconds before working slowly. Simply right clicking results in spinning beach ball.
I have no idea what the issue could be at this point. I am now about to attempt to verify the disk again to see if it fixes any issues but a year old Apple product should NOT be behaving like this.
    Any advice is appreciated!

    Melophage,
I've been scouring the community for help, and hoping you might be able and willing to look at my etrecheck results and share any wisdom and feedback, problem causers you see! I updated to OS Mavericks through apple updates without really realizing I was installinga  whole new system. I have been experiencing the lag issues that many others have, and have a Kernel_Task for which the CPU skyrockets at random and consistently slows things down. I've run disk repair in recovery mode, repaired permission, PRAM, a few 'basics', but have not really had success in addressing the issue (I guess because I don't really understand the issue!)
Thanks in advance for any time and suggestions!!

  • MacBook Pro painfully slow, lagging after Mavericks install

I know I'm not the only one with this problem, but I'm not often able to follow the advice given to others -- it's too technical for me and uses abbreviations I'm not familiar with.  I would so appreciate any suggestions anyone might have -- expressed so people with not much expertise can follow them.  Here's the report on my machine.  Thanks!!

MacKeeper is not capable of doing anything that can't be accomplished more safely and easily using the Mac's built-in tools.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it updated with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • MacBook Pro extremely slow start up, Rainbow wheel of death. HELP!

    Hi there
My Mac has just suddenly started becoming very slow. Upgraded to Mavericks 2 months ago. Had an issue at first install that was resolved with re-installation.
Has become very slow to boot, freezing at the Grey Screen with the Apple and spining cog. (Kernel I think?)
It is also very slow once logged in. Nothing has changed system wise. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I'm not too Mac savvy, so the help is very much appreciated. So here's what I've done...
Had already tried to delete CleanMyMac. So I got EasyFind, and used it to delete/destroy the rest of the files. Did the same for Roxio, Sierra Wireless and Seagate. PaceAp would have been installed with Pro Tools, which is now gone.
There are several files associated with Sierra, PaceAp and Seagate (.plist & .bom files) that I cannot delete, as I get an error saying that cannot be deleted.
Tried Verifying and Repairing Disk Permissions - All was OK
Ran through the Sleep, then Restart, then Shutdown sequence. Noticed no difference.
    Reset P-Ram.
    Reset SMC
Rebooted again, holding command + R and ran the disk utility.
First Verified the disk. Got errors:
    Invalid Directory item count
Volume bitmap needs minor repair for orphaned blocks
The volume Machintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
So I then ran Repair disk, it ran through and then said:
The volume Machintosh HD was repaired successfully.
    The battery condition is normal

      Condition:          Normal
      Battery Installed:          Yes
      Amperage (mA):          0
      Voltage (mV):          12401
I then rebooted, but nothing has changed. At the moment it boots to the grey screen with the Apple logo and cogwheel. Takes about 10 mins to then go through to log in. Often the fan will start running as if the system is under load.
When I click login the rainbow wheel pops up and it freezes for a while. Then it eventually loads the home page. Takes another 10 - 20 mins to load everything, the clock and wifi connections in the top right take ages to load.
It will be extremely slow for another 20 mins or so. Cant open folders or do simple tasks without getting the rainbow wheel. Then after a little while it seems to run OK, but still sluggish.
There are no programs that are launched on startup, and I close all programs before shutting the system down. I have over 100 GB free space on the harddrive. Yet I notice in the data from EtreCheck, it states there is only 66 Gb.
Haven't used Time Machine, as my external harddrive is formatted to FAT32, and I have nowhere to store all its contents to reformat it to Mac Extended Journal.  I have backed up all the files from the system that I need.
So is there anything else I can try? Should I try a full system wipe and reinstallation? If so, how do I go about this?
I'm assuming unlike PC's, it's not just a simple task to replace the harddrive, if it is failing hardware?
I'm in rural Australia, so not readily near a Mac Support Shop. But if it is hardware, I'll just have to figure out some way to get to one.
Here's the updated info from EtreCheck, if its of any use..
Thanks again everyone the help, muchos gracias!

  • Optimizing 2010 Macbook Pro for Yosemite

    Hello,
I have a 2010 Macbook Pro (2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3) and would like to upgrade it to Yosemite without it slowing the machine down. I have Maverick installed currently, and it is a little sluggish, but not too bad. I plan on running Adobe CC programs, and would like to maintain a decent speed for working. I was wondering if there is anything specific I should do to optimize my machine? Should I take it in to have more RAM installed or a larger hard drive? The laptop is in good shape and I'd like to avoid shelling out for a new one if I can avoid it.
    Thanks!

Definitely max out the memory first.  Faster hard drive will help a little.  One option that I hear that really helps is to replace the DVD with an SSD.  (Put the DVD in an external case.)

  • Advice on upgrading my 2010 MacBook pro

    Hi there,
I'm after some advice. I need to purchase a new laptop as my current 2010 MacBook Pro is slowly dying (battery, charger, spinning beach ball). I'm not great with technology obviously, otherwise I wouldn't be asking! Mine is a mid 2010, 13 inch, 2.6GHz, with 4GB RAM and a 320GB SATA Disk and is running current software. I've loved my MBP and it's served me well. It's gotten a touch slow over the years which frustrates me at times, and I find it a little heavy at times. I want it's replacement to be fairly similar in speed, but would definitely like it a little lighter. I think I'd stick with the 13 inch screen too. I do mostly basic stuff with it. Word processing, emails, internet surfing, some photo editing, I have a decent sized itunes library and watch movies etc. I'm open to either a macbook pro or a macbook air.
    Thank you.

I have a 2010 MBP and it is not slow.  If you are using the latest OSX, Yosemite, install at least 8 GB RAM.  Your MBP will accept up to 16 GB RAM.  The best sources of RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    If you instal a SSD, the performance will be enhanced even more.  Just today I received the following SSD information that would be compatible with your MBP;
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148946&utm_medium=Email &utm_source=EXPRESS041815&nm_mc=EMC-EXPRESS041815&cm_mmc=EMC-EXPRESS041815-_-EMC -041815-index-_-InternalSSDs-_-20148946-S1A1C
That is a good price for a 500GB SSD.  There certainly are other options to choose from.
For about $250+ you could have a MBP that would perform better that the day you took it out of the box.
You also may have some third party software that may be inhibiting performance.  Any AV or so called 'cleaning' applications should be eliminated.
    Ciao.
