2010 MacBook Pro VRAM
Hi guys i have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro with the nvidia geforce 320m card
I have 6GB Ram in the laptop when im on mac the VRAM is 256MB
But when im on windows it says approx, Total memory 2934MB under display can anyone tell me how this works please?
I just checked out some information. I was incorrect about the 320m. It is:
Graphics Memory
256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory (Minimum graphics memory usage is 256 MB)
It can share main memory. Usually the amount it can share is a function of the total amount of RAM installed in the computer. I'm not sure what the algorithm is for the 320m, but it may be that 256 MBs is the maximum shared amount for up to 2 GBs of main memory. Add 128 MBs more when main memory doubles. So at 4 GBs it would be 384 MBs. Windows is not reporting 4 GBs of shared memory, so the GPU is using only 256 MBs. That would be my interpretation.

Mid 2010 MacBook Pro i7 - Crashing - Low $ - HEELLPP
My mid 2010 Macbook pro 15" with i7 running 10.85 has recently started crashing. I've really only used it extensively for the last 2 years so it's been doing quite well but has now started black screening then rebooting with no - at least not apparent to the user - sequence of events.
My partner isn't working (car hit and run) so budget is low and I'm currently pushing myself on Team Treehouse to learn coding to improve my job prospects and my salary so need the laptop right now.
Is the below the standard logic board replacement that I've found many have on forum? is it the video card? Just not sure which way to head and not in the budget for a totally new laptop though would be confident enough with the help of (PC) husband to upgrade hard drive or other components. OR am I best to take it to the Apple store for a genius assessment?
Any help greatly appreciated.
Kindest,
Kitty

Mid-2010 macbook pro mini display port to hdmi works only intermittently
I have a 13-inch mid-2010 MacBook Pro running OS X 10.10.2. HDMI out from mini displayport to my Dynex TV only intermittently works. The times that I have gotten it to work involves a combination of restarting the computer, unplugging the TV and plugging it back in, then plugging in the MDP adapter. Now when I plug it in, the MacBook screen flashes black like it is trying to detect the external display, but no picture on the TV. Any help would be appreciated.
Here is the console log output when I plug in the adapter:

The only observations are that the backup drive is deemed too small and the quite long list of diagnostic reports dated between Jan 18, 2015 (which I believe is the day I upgraded to Yosemite) & today the latest Yosemite update was installed on Jan 28, 2015
Any further assistance will be appreciated -
Why can't I use my mid 2010 macbook pro with 8GB memoir and NVIDIA GEForce GT 330M 256MB to run 3D in photoshop CC?
3-D is very memory intensive.
System requirements | Photoshop
Mac OS
Multicore Intel processor with 64-bit support
Mac OS X v10.7, v10.8, or v10.9
2 GB of RAM (8 GB recommended)
3.2 GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on a volume that uses a case-sensitive file system or on removable flash storage devices)
1024x768 display (1280x800 recommended) with 16-bit color and 512 MB of VRAM (1 GB recommended)**
OpenGL 2.0–capable system
Internet connection and registration are necessary for required software activation, membership validation, and access to online services.*
** 3D features are disabled and some Mercury Graphics Engine enhanced features may not work with less than 512 MB VRAM. Read the Help article.
Bottom line, you don't have enough VRAM

I have a 2010 Macbook pro running snow leopard (Mac OS 10.6.8). First off, this has been the worst computer I've ever owned or have heard of someone having, Mac or PC. There hasn't been a time where something hasn't been wrong. I'm going to list my specs, my current problems and maybe list previous problems after that. Any advice or suggestions would be great. My brother works for apple out in Cali and I've been sending him crash and bug reports and he can't seem to figure out what's going on.
Specs:
2010 Macbook Pro (Mac OSX 10.6.8)
Processor: 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory: 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics Cards: Intel HD Graphics (288 VRAM) and a NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M (512 VRAM)
(if you want more info, just ask)
To start things off, my computer hard crashes at random points playing basically any game. StarCraft 2 (when I could play the game prior to Blizzard patching my OS out of the minimum requirements), League of Legends, MineCraft and others all crash while in use. My computer screen suddenly flashes white and then to black and whatever audio may have been playing in the past second of gameplay is thrown into a constant loop. The screen is solid black with no mouse and there is no keyboard functionality. The only thing I can do is hold down the power button. I first started noticing this problem back when StarCraft 2 Heart of the Swarm came out. I would crash every 4 or 5 games in this way. Since that was happening I resorted to playing other games such as League of Legends. I wasn't having any trouble at all, but gradually it started to have the hard crashing issues. Initially every handful of games, now it crashes in roughly 50% of the games I play. This happens while I have NO other applications open and this has happened even after a complete restart with only 2 things opening at startup. League started crashing in this way after I brought my computer in to have a fan replaced.
Another thing which has started happening since I had my fan replaced at the apple store: My computer has become very sluggish at times and my computer freezes in another way. Many times a day, I will find I click on something in an application and the entire computer locks up. There's no spinning beachball. There's no movement of any sort on the screen and there is no button functionality, but I can move the mouse. Clicking does nothing. This sort of freeze lasts for about 30 seconds up to 5 or 6 minutes or so. After that, it suddenly just decides to work again. I can tell when it unfreezes because the clock in the corner jumps to the correct time. This has happened frequently while using Google Chrome, Firefox and Safari. It also happened while trying to use Skype. It was freezing the most when facebook or youtube has been open, but it happens without that happening as well. One of the first times I noticed it, earlier this year, I was searching for work and tried to go to this website: http://www.nhab.org/ (looking for a job). It froze my computer as I described above (and I didn't know it would unfreeze after several minutes, so I thought my computer was completely frozen). I restarted, went to the same website and it froze again. I did this a third time and it froze again, so I restarted again. On the fourth try, it loaded. The frequency of this problem is ridiculous. I actually decided to delete Google Chrome from my computer (and its support files) since my computer would freeze the most often with Chrome (though I used Chrome mostly for youtube and watching tv shows online). Almost instantly after deleting Chrome, my computer was running significantly faster. things loaded quicker in other browsers and aplications loaded smoother. My text no longer lagged when typing in facebook... It hasn't solved the freezing, though the freezing tends to last less time now.
Another thing that happens, which I am not sure is normal: When my computer is booting, after the grey screen, it changes to light blue. During this light blue time, often times white horizontal centimeter to inch wide bars will flash across the screen near the top. This also happens on shutting down. I also noticed that when it shuts down the screen doesn't just shut off. The screen flickers quick for up to a second and then it is off. It doesn't just turn off.
My computer has also occassionally flashed for a brief fraction of a second, to the blue start up color and back to whatever I am doing.
Those are all issues I am having right now and I am beginning to wonder if this several thousand dollar computer is capable of doing much more than just writing text..
Prior issues I have had:
Right from the start, I have had major graphical issues which I showed to the people at the apple store and they reinstalled flash, but they really didn't know what was going on. These glitches would tiles previous graphical things I had done in an artistic mozaic across my desktop, replacing my background image with broken mozaics. It's hard to explain without showing, so here are 2 screenshots from it:
The people at the store thought it was just flash... but I don't understand how that could be flash. I would have to flip through different desktop backgrounds I used to make it go away. After it doing this for 2 years, it has only happened once since then and not very badly..
Another issue I had: The battery on my laptop just about exploded... I woke up one morning with my laptop sitting on my night stand as usual, but there was a small crack across part of my trackpad. I was scared because I thought I must have done something... I went to the bathroom, took a shower and when I came back the crack was farther across the trackpad. I had breakfast, came upstairs and my trackpad had 1 crack across the whole thing with multiple mini cracks going in every direction from it. After telling my brother what was going on, he quickly said that it was the battery and to take it to a store. I took it to the store and showed them what was happening and they very quickly took it out back and I quote "threw the battery in a firesafe immediately" because when they opened the laptop it started to quickly expand. This ended up cracking my trackpad as well as bending the bottom of the body on the laptop. All had to be replaced...
Then I had the fan sounding like a weedwacker, so I had it replaced a couple months ago and a couple months ago is when the freezing began, the computer started running slowly and all games crash the computer.
I have had a lot of things go wrong, not a lot of things go right and I'm really frustrated. Can anyone tell me how to get my computer to stop freezing or how to make it stop hard crashing during any of the games I play?
Basically, what I have done so far is reset the PRAM I think? I held command + option + P + R on start up and had it chime 3 or 4 times. Other than that, I don't know what to do.... suggestions?I just wanted to follow this up by saying that you were entirely correct in your diagnosis of the situation. My computer did have the faulty part you linked to. I brought my laptop in and specifically told them to run that test, had it fail and then argued with the person at the genius bar and the manager. Eventually they offered to have it sent out and have everything replaced for free of charge. They did so mainly because I had complained about graphical issues almost every other time I had come in with problems and no one ran the test. They should have caught this problem during my warranty, but they didn't, even though I mentioned the problem.
Anyhow, after having the part replaced, I haven't had my computer crash a single time since, or had many of the issues mentioned above. I've never had this experience before. Even brand new, I got occasional crashes. Hopefully this new trend continues.
I do find that web browsing is still incredibly slow. Web browsers just chug along at a slow pace, even though I have great internet speed. Maybe I'll try just deleting my web browsers and reinstalling them...
Anyhow, thank you for your help and knowledge Clinton. -
Stage3D and a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro
So, I have a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro running Lion. It has a GeForce GT 330M. According to everything I can find online, my computer should support Stage3D. However, when I try and use an application that calls for it, I get errors about an unsupported graphics card. When I go to the Stage3D unsupported chipset page, it says that my GPU does not support Stage3D in Baseline or Constrained profile.
I found a guy who did some testing of Stage3D vs. WebGL, and he used the same chipset I am using to run the tests.
Is it a driver issue that was fixed in Snow Leopard/Mavericks? Or is my chipset actually unsupported? I would think that a three-year-old graphics card should still work. I appreciate any help that anyone can give.
Complete system specs:
MacBook Pro, Mid 2010
2.4 GHz i5
8 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256MB
Mac OS X 10.7.5
Flash Version: 11.9.900.152I'd personally trust the assessor window more than the list. It uses javascript to render Stage 3D animation via your GPU, so if it doesn't support it, it won't show the 3D animation.
Since 2004 Apple has been notorious for releasing "mid year" and "late year" models that have minor changes, but are still called the same year model. Sometimes, those changes are for the better, sometimes not.
I had a 2004 G5 iMac that was a 1.8gHz 20". It was made in June. The models made in December 2004 had iSight cams built in and a different GPU, but they were still called 2004 iMacs. Better systems for nearly $600 less. I had a late 2009 MacBook Pro that had a better GPU (512mb VRAM) than my neighbor's early 2009 MBP (256mb VRAM). I'd suspect that the people with 2010 Minis who CAN run Stage 3D have later models, with a different GPU, or some other "minor change" made by Apple that allows it.
Regardless of what it is, unfortunately Flash Player and Stage 3D can't upgrade hardware. -

Mar 28, 2015, 07:28:57 AM Self test - passed
Mar 26, 2015, 08:20:29 AM /Users/[redacted]/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/plugin-container_2015-03-26-08 2029_[redacted].crashI’ve tried running 10.10 on quite a few different computers with 4GB of RAM and a standard mechanical hard drive and all of them performed worse with Yosemite than they did with Mavericks (10.9). And about a year ago I found that they performed better with Mt Lion (10.8) than Mavericks. Each version of the Mac OS has required more memory than the version that came before it and that means that every couple of years the minimum acceptable RAM is increased. Apple signaled this quietly at the Apple Store - only one computer now ships with 4GB of RAM. (And I can tell you from personal experience that in that configuration it is not fun to use.)
Bottom line: you need at least 8GB of RAM or an SSD. Both are better. In the meantime run as lean a machine as possible. MacKeeper is a waste of money no matter what anyone might tell you. At best it is not necessary and is a waste of money. -
Mid 2010 Macbook Pro Keeps Restarting due to Kernel Panic. Ideas for how to fix?
So my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro keeps randomly restarting, and giving me a screen that says something like "your computer restarted due to a problem."
Looks like it as a kernel panic, but I have no idea what this is. Seems to be no pattern for when it crashes. Used to do it maybe once a month and now this is the 5th time in two days.
Any idea what might be going on? Looked at past threads but nothing seemed to apply.

Mid-2010 MacBook Pro stuck in clamshell mode?
I asked a similar question to this earlier, but now the problem has been more consistent. I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro that I often use with an external display, plugged in via mini-DVI to HDMI adapter. The problem is, after I've unplugged my macbook to "go mobile" and am away from my display, if I ever have to restart my computer or boot into Windows 7, my computer will think it's still in clamshell mode. The screen will stay dark, and if the lid is closed, the white light will stay on steadily, not pulsing. However, if I plug into my external display when this is happening, the external display works fine and I have a display again. When I look up my displays while connected to an external display while this is happening, my internal display isn't even listed in the system report; it's like it doesn't exist! And this is especially a problem now as I am away on a 3 week school related trip.
I have not been able to consistently reproduce this problem. Sometimes it restarts normally, sometimes I restart it and get the gray + apple logo screen that then goes dark, and sometimes the internal display just never turns on. The problem doesn't seem to be related to an OS, as it happens when booting into Windows 7 OR mountain lion 10.8.5. I've tried resetting PRAM mutliple times as well as performing an SMC reset multiple times, and neither has helped. This even happened when I was booting into a mountain lion install USB, as I thought maybe a fresh install would help. I've seen many other forums discussing a similar issue, but none described quite like mine.
What gives?? How can I get my macbook to restart normally? I really don't want to have to make a repair, even though it's looking like a hardware problem. My computer is one month after Apple Care has expired, and I can't afford a pricey repair as I'm a very in debt student who only has a MacBook because his school gave it to him in the first place. I would be very appreciative for any suggestions and/or help! Thanks!Hello thedoctor8706
Reset your NVRAM and test to see if that resolves your issues. Typically that will resolve video, volume, startup disk selection, and kernel panic issues.

Mid 2010 Macbook Pro +1000 Euro repair costs (no external marks)
Hello together,
I am looking out for some advise. My mid 2010 Macbook Pro 15inch with an anti glare display just got a new logic board. I paid more than 500 Euro at a Premium Reseller called mStore in Kiel (Germany) to replace it, because the display stayed black after booting. My Macbook didn't even have a single external mark or scratch on the housing. I accepted it and said to myself if it is working again, it is alright. But less than two month later a vertical line is drawing from the top frame to the bottom (see photo). The line is narrow, it is just one pixel, but it is really annoying because it is always in sight. I went to the same reseller and asked what to do, they recommend a second repair attempt for again 500 Euro. In less then two month I cannot afford +1000 Euro for a laptop with an actual value of about 1100 Euro.
What is the best thing to do now?
I am really disappointed by Apple's quality. I am 24 years old and everybody in my family is using Apple computers since I can think back. The first time I could call a Mac my own was when I was 13.
When I graduated from school I was 19 and worked in a hospital to finance a new iBook G4. I had this one for about four years and it has been traveling with me through New Zealand and Asia for more than a year. I never had any issue with it, even when I dropped it from the top bank in a dormitory. It is still alive and working fine.
When I started studying the time came to buy an Intel Mac (15'' Macbook Pro, anti glare) and again I was very happy with the quality. I have also been a huge advocate for Apple products and was confidently suggesting them to friends and family. But today I feel disappointed by the brand.
Best
MarcoI had the same problem on a display MBP 15" in 2010, and it is a display problem recognised by Apple.
It was covered by the warranty.
If you do nothing, the number of vertical pixel lines will increase over time.
Good that Apple helped you out of this problem. -
How to connect my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro to my HDTV?
I have a mid 2010 macbook pro with a mini display port. I want to display it on my hdtv. I tried a mini display port to hdmi adapter first but that wouldn't work so then I tried a mini display port to dvi adapter connected to a dvi to hdmi adapter but still no success. Any ideas?
I have your same model and I'm using a mini display port to hdmi when I want to connect right to a TV. Is it not detecting, or is it a blank screen etc? What TV are you trying to connect to?

Although you managed to "hack" Boot Camp Assistant and you can create a Windows USB installer, you will not be able to boot from the USB drive and you will get a nice "No bootable device" screen after restarting your Mac.
Apple has set up Boot Camp Assistant in order to show the option to create a USB installer only in Macs which support it. In the case of the MacBook Pro, only MacBooks Pro with Retina display support that option, so you are out of luck. You need Windows on a DVD. -
I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro, How can I install Windows 7 without an Optical Drive?
For clarity: I have a mid 2010, Macbook Pro. I recently decided to upgrade to a Crucial SSD drive, double the ram (8 gigs), and remove the optical drive in favor of using my old drive as a back up. I am also currently running Yosemite.
I want to install Windows 7 onto my SSD, using bootcamp. Unfortunately I no longer have an optical drive installed, which makes things difficult as Bootcamp does not even give me the option to create a bootable USB.
Now, this is where things get kinda fuzzy:
MId 2010 macbooks use EFI, and are quite capable of booting from USB. How do I know? Because I booted from a USB drive in order to do a fresh install of Yosemite on my SSD.
I have read mutliple forums and threads with claims that folks have had no problems doing this on 2008 Macbook Pros running Snow Leopard. However, what seemed to be required was some clever .plist modding. I have used both text wrangler, and x-code to do this, unfortunately upon booting of bootcamp, bootcamp instantly crashes. Naturally, I can restore bootcamp because I made backups of the .plist file.
It would seem that modffying the .plist file assumes that the option to create a bootable USB device is grayed out. In my case, it is non existent.
I have also read that folks have had success using rEFIt, however rEFIt has been forked to rEFIned, and the developer of rEFIned made mention on his site that Yosemite handles booting differently than previous versions of OSX.
WIth that, I was hoping that some kind person could explain to me whats going on, what I am missing, and what I can do to make this happen just shy of tearing down my MBP and reisntalling the Optical Drive and dusting off my Win 7 disc.
Also, my Model Number/Bootrom is MBP 6,2.
Thanks in advance!Thank you for your reply, and the information. This is what I came up with:
I added the strings as instructed, however when I went to sign the script in terminal, I was told:
/Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app: replacing existing signature
/Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app: code object is not signed at all
In subcomponent: /Applications/Utilities/Boot Camp Assistant.app/Contents/info.plist
Also, here are screen captures of the lines that I added. Mine are the top string entries:
Thank you for your help, thus far! -
Late 2010 MacBook Pro 15", upgraded to Lion on Sat 23rd no external display does not work
Hi all,
Wanted to ask this question here see if anyone might have a solution to my problem. I have a Late 2010 Macbook Pro 15" which I upgraded to Lion yesteray. Ever since that upgrade when I try to connect to my TV to watch a video no joy the image looks like the colours are out.
I have tried it on different resolutions and always the same. Then for some reason the MacBook Pro split the screen in two. So now I see the right of the screen on the left of the TV and the left on the righ with a big black line done the middle.
Priror to the Lion upgrade everything was fine. Only since Lion has this been a problem.
I am using a Minidisply to HDMI cable to go direct into my Phillips 42" Plasma, and I have not got a clue why this is doing this. The strange thing is it works ok on my Samsung BX2450 down the same cable no problems at all just the TV that has issues.
Any suggestions?
Cheers
