2010 MacBook shutting down randomly

Over the past week my 2010 MacBook has been acting out.
I will be watching a movie while performing other tasks simultaneously (something I have done for years without issue) and my computer will suddenly turn off with no warning. When I restart it reboots just fine (normally) and shows no error messages. Only once have I had difficulty rebooting and ended up having to retry the reboot two times.
Every time this shutdown happens, my computer is plugged in and charging. When the computer turns off, my charger's light turns off and I'm assuming it also stops working. I usually have to unplug it or turn off my power strip before the charger will start working again. It's the original charger and it probably should be replaced as it is being held together with electrician tape.
I have run a virus scan, which found an infected file which was taken care of. I am also in the process of doing a firmware update, updating my software to 10.10.1, and I might try an apple hardware test tomorrow. I've read that possibly resetting the PRAM would be beneficial, but I don't really know what that means and I'm not sure I feel comfortable doing it.
I'm really befuddled as to what could be going on.
Other info: my mac is currently running on 8gb of RAM. I use it mostly for school and watching movies. I have had to replace the battery and the touch pad in the past year. My NEW battery seems like it is draining rather quickly, which is an entirely different post all together

Check in your system profiler to see what firmware you have before you try a firmware update as you may have the latest firmware for you mac already. As far as zapping the pram you hold down the command/option/ P/R key while holding the start button on start up untill you hear three chimes. You might also try an SMC reset. If the battery is removable, remove battery and powercord and hold start button down for 5 to 10 second. reconnect everything and restart. If not removable hold down Option/ command/shift while holding down the power button for about 10 seconds. See if this helps.

  • MacBook shuts down randomly

MacBook shuts down randomly while using or while sitting idle. It then needs a min before the power button seems to function. The charger will not start charging right away after the computer comes back on. I also notice the date and time goes back to 7:00am Jan 1st 2008. There is a dialog box that says it has been reset, but no reason why. I then have to re-enter all my password info. In most cases the time does return by it's self to the correct time and date after I go to change the time and date, but only when i go to change it, before doing that it stays the same. I did have one time where I was unable to change the time, it would not allow me. I had to restart the computer again to change the time and date. I have not seen anything on the forum that explain this issue. I am not sure if it is a virus either.

Mine has been doing this aswell. It started a few months ago with not waking up from Sleep mode after I closed the lid. It has gotten progressively worse- where it won't turn on for sometimes days on end. Holding the power button down to shut it off completely or to restart doesn't work. This happens when pugged in and not.
Most recently though, when I am able to get it to turn on, it will randomly shut down, or go to sleep and I can't get it to come out of it.
I bought this brand new just over a year ago. I shouldn't be having these problems!

  • My macbook shuts down randomly

My Macbook keeps shuting down randomly, it seems to happen when pressure is put on the left side or the battery. What is happening and how can I fix it?

If possible locate your install disk and see if you are capable or running an AHT( Apple HardWare Test ) just to see if anything obvious can be found. Maybe save yourself a trip to the Store.

  • Macbook shuts down randomly when ichatting

I've had my white macbook for about 5 months. I recently moved to Europe to study abroad and the macbook has started giving me trouble.
Specifically, my computer shuts down without warning when I'm using video chat on ichat or watching streaming video for more than 20 or 30 minutes. I can turn it back on and restart the chat, but it shuts down again a couple of minutes later. This has happened both with the power plugged in and going off the battery alone. I've never had it shut down like this when I'm just using the internet or the word processor or something (only ichat and watching streaming video).
Any ideas? I'd really appreciate the help!

  • My 2008 Macbook shuts down randomly.

At first, it would just shut down if there was a CD in or if i tried to watch videos.  I got a new battery and it did not fix the problem.  I tried updating it but it would shut down during the updating process.  I finally got it to fully update and it still shuts down.  I am a student so I need my laptop.  Any suggestions?

Hi Lauren. Try using the computer when its plugged in to the charger and see if the computer still shuts down. If not, then it could be a firmware problem (since you bought a new battery). Try booting the computer using the install disk as well and see if the same thing happens. If it does, then this could be a hardware issue. You would have to visit an Apple Store or Authorized repair center for this. You can also try resetting the SMC.

  • My MacBook shuts down intermittently; keyboard disconnects randomly ~

My MacBook shuts down randomly.  It started doing this about a week ago.  Occasionally the keyboard becomes inoperative - ok after reboot.  I have a logitech wireless mouse attached as well as a WD 500GB Passport.

  • Replaced Logic Board, RAM, and hard drive connecting wire, but Macbook Pro 15' (Mid 2010) now freezes and shuts down randomly

I have a mid 2010, Macbook Pro '15. Summer of 2012, it kept shutting down and making the three beeping noises, so I took it in for repair. I was told that my Logicboard needed to be replaced, so I replaced it, and took my Macbook abroad with me. Halfway through the summer, the three beeping noises resumed, and since I was abroad, I couldn't use my 90 day warranty and take it back for repair. By the time I returned to the US, my warranty ended, and I was told that the RAM actually needed to be replaced. So I replaced that.
In May of this year, my laptop wouldn't start and instead showed a folder with a question mark. I took it to repair and was told it was the hard drive wire that needed to be replaced, so I replaced that. Less than two weeks after, my Mac began freezing whenever I had a YouTube video or song playing- it made short, staticky sounds and then shut down. Now, it shuts down randomly even when I'm not playing videos or songs, and regardless of if it is running on battery or plugged in. Since I got my hard drive wire replaced, I've also noticed that the laptop takes an incredibly slow time to start up.
The last the Genius Bar technicians looked at my computer when replacing the harddrive wire, they hadn't said anything else was wrong with my laptop.
I've spent almost $1000 total fixing my macbook and am quite sick of going through this over and over again. Can anyone help me know what went wrong this time? (I have no apple care) Thank you in advance.

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you'll be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a depot repair.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.
Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.

  • My Macbook air (late 2010) shuts down randomly!!

Need some help here!! My Macbook air (late 2010) shuts down randomly, sometimes it won't even power on. This happened to me one morning, then at night try turning it back on, it went back to normal, I didnt do anything to it. Today it did it again but it went back to normal few minutes later after hitting the power buttom more than 10 times

    Hi Argenisss,
I'm sorry you are having issues with your Macbook Air.  Since your post indicates you have the latest version of the operating system, I would suggest resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    Power
The computer doesn't respond to the power button when pressed.
A portable Mac doesn't appear to respond properly when you close or open the lid.
The computer sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly.
The battery does not appear to be charging properly.
The MagSafe power adaptor LED doesn't appear to indicate the correct activity.
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
Another troubleshooting step would be to reset the PRAM as well:
    About NVRAM and PRAM
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
You can read more details by clicking on the two links above, but these would be two good troubleshooting steps to try.
Hopefully, this information will help ....

  • Mid-2009 macbook pro 13" shuts down randomly when unplugged

When my MBP is plugged in, it has never restarted on me. Most of the time when it is unplugged it doesn't either, but for the last month or so it will randomly power off (it pauses for a half-second, screen dims and it turns off .) I have Mavericks on it and 128GB SSD in it originally when the problems started, I installed a 240GB SSD a week ago and restored to an image from before the problem started happening (April 14th) and it seemed like it was fine but within a day or two I noticed the problem again. I am not sure if perhaps some update is breaking it or what, but it is pretty irksome. The battery seems to be fine, although I'll admit it has said 'service battery' in the past (but it says 'normal' in the system profiler and lasts ~3-4 hours.) I have tried resetting the SMC using these instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964 but it doesn't seem to have helped. I can restart the macbook on battery power after it turns off, so the battery doesn't seem to be dead when it powers off - in fact it will sometimes turn off when there are hours of life left. The macbook doesn't get particularly hot so I don't think it is an overheating issue.
Any ideas what could be the problem?

Thanks for the suggestion. I finally gave in and bought a new battery and installed it (I've suspected this might be the problem for awhile) but unfortunately it hasn't fixed the problem at all. In fact, it almost seems worse - previously it has just had problems randomly, however I noticed just now at 42% it shuts down randomly within a a few minutes - it's happened 3 times in a row now (I turned it back on each time, leaving it unplugged, and it shut down again.) Any other thoughts?

  • Macbook keeps shutting down randomly

I've had my Macbook for about 9 months with no problems but it has suddenly started to shut down randomly. I have looked at lots of support advice on this site but nothing has worked. I have the latest firmware and battery update patches. Following advice on this forum, I thought it was down to recently installed widgets that might me using too much CPU so I binned them to no avail. It also isn't the temperature, when it last died that was at 49c, so well below danger level! From what I can ascertain, it isn't kernal panic either, and no panic logs have been stored. I haven't had any error messages. I have looked at the console and system logs, but they don't mean much to me.
    Here's what happens:
Completely randomly, regardless of what applications I have open or with no external decives attached, my mac switches off, or almost. The start up "ching" sounds, then the screen flickers on and off while the light at the front does the same, it also makes the start-up sound a few times as if it's trying to restart. It doesn't close down completely but won't come back up again. When it first started doing this, I could force it to shut down then reboot it, but just now the only way I could get it to do this was to remove all power: take out the battery and remove the power-in cable then replace the cable and reboot. It still does this with the battery removed completely, so it's not the battery causing this. I've also tried holding down the on/off button until it makes that long tone sound just to see if it would start up before removing all power, but it didn't!
Help! I've tried everything I can think of and the apple store is closed in the UK!

Ummm, nope. All due respects, this problem cropped up suddenly, at about the same time, for multiple users, on different laptop types. Probability of all this happening at once due to simultaneous hardware failures is much lower than if it was caused by say a software update not playing well with something (a piece of 3rd party software, etc). I'm having the same exact problem, I have put a new battery in, same thing happens.
This is similar to 3 or so years ago when widgets were first introduced, laptop battey lifes dropped to about 1/3 and the machines heated up. General consensus was it must be hardware, well no it was software, and a software fix took care of it. I'm hoping someone figures this out soon...
    Thanks

  • MacBook Pro Retina shutting down randomly

    Hi
Some shile ago my MBP Retina 15" started shutting down randomly while i use it. Then it takes like 10-30 minutes to cool down and then it can be turned on agin. If you try to switch it on earlier than it sounds like it's starting as ususally but the screen is either black from the very beginning or goes black in a couple of seconds while starting up.
BTW the thunderbolt port refused to work some while ago, if you plug in a thunderbolt display the MBP will switch off much faster than if you work on it as a lap top.
Any ideas what this can be and how it can be fixed?
The system message that pop-up upon restarting the MBP is below:

It looks as if it's a GPU panic. However, it could have been caused by any combination of:
    com.silex.driver.sxuptp          1.5.1
    com.citrix.driver.net6im          1.1.3
    com.deterministicnetworks.driver.dne          1.0.9
    com.deterministicnetworks.driver.dniregistry          1.0.4
Try booting into Safe Mode (holding down the Shift key whilst booting) and see if the panics stop. If so, determine if the are updates to the drivers or find the kernel extensions and put them in a folder on your Desktop and reboot without them.
    Good luck,

  • 13" MacBook Pro (late 2012) shuts down randomly

Mac book pro 13" retina shuts down randomly and without warning. The screen goes black and it takes several minutes before it will start back up.
I've taken my mac book pro 13" retina to the genius bar, twice. The first time I was told to remove some software, which I did and the computer continues to randomly shut down. The second time I was told to make sure that I have at least 12 GB of storage available, which I made happen and the computer continues to shut down.
What I can tell you, and what I've told genius bar, is:
The shut down happens when it is either plugged in or not. The shut downs happen toward the middle of the day when the computer gets warm. It is not hot, just warm. If I keep a external fan pointed at it all day I do not get any shut downs. I've spend almost a full day at genius bar and I am looking for some help/approach/information that would help us solve this problem.
    Computer Info:
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012)
Yosemtie 10.10.1. Note I was running the latest Mavericks and had the problem too. The upgrade did not help.
    Thank you.

Their tests are superior to the AHT and so I am surprised that they did not pick up on any hardware faults.  The responses that you say they gave you are in my opinion, to be charitable, worthless.  The fact is that the quality of the technicians at a genius bar are not consistent, some being better than others.
If I were in your position, I would firmly but politely demand the the MBP be serviced so that the AHT not produce that error any more.  If need be, send the MBP to a repair facility where more experienced personnel can work on it.  If you have Apple care, there should be no charge.
    Ciao.
