2010 macmini overheating on startup, turns off

I started having this issue actually about a year after I bought my mac. It would just turn off without warning and I tried googling unexpected shutoffs of the mac, but nothing turned up.
This would happen off and on, but not so much that I felt I needed to shell out for repair. One day though, about a year ago, it just wouldn't turn on. I opened it just to see if everything was alright in there, dust maybe? I touched the little black part by the fan and it was scalding.
I then googled overheating macminis and nothing really would turn up other than doing PRAM resets, so I did that, and it came back to life. Off and on I would do this, along with power cycling, shooting compressed air in the vents, and hoping to God it would come back to life and it did.
Now though, I can't get anything to work and it's been like this for three days now. This is my first mac and supposedly these things are supposed to be troopers, but my old HP lasted me longer than this thing.
One thing though, now after the gray screen an apple logo pops up, a little bar appears under the apple logo and starts loading. I do think it downloaded a system update the day prior to this problem, so maybe it's related?
I also remember one of the times it got this serious, I had just recently updated to Maverick- which is when I ran the PRAM reset.
Thank you for your time!

Can anybody advise me what steps I need to take in order to fix this?
Note: It is a macbook duo core (white styleee) and I am currently running SL
    many thanks

For what it's worth, I have the same exact problem, and have tried EVERYTHING....Trust me... I finally took it into the apple store, and they told me that my logic board may be going bad... The weirdest thing is that if I have a clean boot of plain old Leopard, it boots in about 2 min.... compared to the 5 min.... after I update.... but it still won't wake up before, or after the clean install...or update... If I close the lid.......I have to hold down the power button to shut it off........ so I guess it is the logic board.... They told me it would cost about $375 to replace it... and I would be out of a computer for a week.....errrrr.... My gut feeling tells me its a little $2 sensor, that I could replace, ONLY if I knew how to do that.....
Good luck, and hope someone would post a simple fix, I can only wish.....
Sounds like a defect.... come on Apple..... fix it for free....we pay good money for these machines....

  • How do I turn off week headings?

    Greetings,
I just reinstalled Outlook 2010, and I noticed these week headings:
I know how to change the headings to
week numbers, but how do I turn them off completely?
    Thanks,
    Shane.

    Hi,
It is not there in Outlook 2013 if I turn off Show week numbers in the month view and in the Date Navigator. While in Outlook 2010, it can't be turned off completely.
    Thanks,

  • Lenovo T61 Turning OFF Itself

    Hey All,
I have a lenovo T61 laptop. I bought this around 2 years back. The problem I am facing now is the laptop tuns off itself. Do you know any known reasons for this. When I see the bottom of the laptop when it switch off its hot. Dont know if it is because of this. Please let me know if you guys have faced this before. Thanks for your help!

    Hi,
I had the exact same problem on my T61P which thankfully was quite simple to fix!
I tried TPFanControl and whilst it helped (i.e. I could see when my machine was getting too hot and was about to turn itself off so I could stop loading the CPU/GPU and let it cool again) it did not solve the problem, TPFanControl 'helps' control the internal temperature by better control of the system fans but does not solve the cause of the problem - overheating.
After doing some research, the problem was most likely the CPU cooling fins and fan full of muck and or the thermal grease on the CPU and GPU needing replacing, so, took about 15 minutes to strip the fan and cooling out, clean and re-apply thermal grease.  End result - no overheating and no turning off!  The service manuals are readily available showing you exactly where the screws etc are located to make the job easy!
    Fixed.

  • Why my iMac 27 2010 turn off by itself?

Why my iMac 27 mid 2010 turn off by itself?
I already replaced the Power Supply part number 661-5972. The next thing is replace all the thermal sensors and then the logic board. I do not have any other way to find out what it 's wrong with it.
Last the same time that the old power Supply. Let it sit for a few hours. Turn back on and works fora few more days or weeks ans suddenly turn off again.
I am 66, started out with Apple around 87 as an independant service provider here in PR and have never had so much problem with any other mac's than this one.
Apple support provider here in PR have no expertise what so ever in giving us solutions to problems. Even thought I still doing some support to some of the old customer I am handicap with new technical tools to solve problems within new products. I wish Apple would have consideration on the old ones that help and support apple products without their help.
Thank you for reading my note!
    Jose A Marrero

    I can relate Jose
Have you looked under the hood of a newer car, worked on a new toaster or coffee maker..? Most all of them have sealed components that are no longer repairable, you throw the old part away and replace it with a new part or just replace the whole thing.
Heck' for the most part even the Geniuses at the bar are unable to fix or do anything about most hardware problems. So instead of trying to fix a product that is under warranty, they either send it out or replace it with a new Mac, Pad, Pod or Phone on the spot.
As another Apple user like yourself with some hands in experience and some time here in ASC, it sounds more like either a overheating graphic's chip or bad SMC chip than a temperature sensor problem. Both of which the normal Hardware Test will not catch.
So on that note: I would probably closely monitor all the temperature sensors (especially the GPU temperature) with iStat Pro or Temp Monitor to see if you can catch an overheating component that is causing the shutdown.
It also might help to post the Consol Message for the shutdown here in the ASC forum.

  • I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, can't join existing wireless network with AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. working fine with TM

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM.  My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore.  Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.  I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads.  Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system.  I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system.  But are there other options to connect the new TC.  Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above.  after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light  or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working.  Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant.  I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work.  The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network.  Are we going backwards?
    Thanks!
    lennydas

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.
    I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC.  the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.
    Thanks again!
You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

  • Exchange2010/Outlook 2010 text message sync - can this be turned off at a policy level?

It is possible to turn off this feature in the activesync policy on the phone itself, but can this be disabled at a policy level so that any Windows Mobile 6.5 devices cannot sync text messages to the Exchange server or send text messages from Outlook 2010?
We have removed the text message feature from OWA using the set-owavirtualdirectory command, but cannot see a way of removing this feature completely from activesync.  Is this not possible for Windows Mobile devices synching with Outlook 2010?

    Hi,
Im not sure if somebody in this forum already provided the answer.. To be able to stop the text message sync with outlook for SAMSUNG S3, you can disble it by following this steps:
    1) Go to your phone Settings
    2) Select "Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync" under "Accounts"
    3) Select "Settings"
    4) Select the account you are using in microsoft exchange
    5) Scroll down until you reach "Server Settings" then untick "Sync SMS"
Once done, your SMS messages will now never be going to your outlook's inbox.
    Hope this helps.

  • G4 450 and protools, somehow ran out of memory to startup. Error code 10. Tried turning off extensions to boot but now just locks up as I tried a HD verify/repair and then moved the folder to the desktop screen. cant get it off now.froze.

Ok, I have a Mac g4,  os9. ..450 Processor. I Think I upgraded ram, can't remember. Maybe a 512 card. Added an 80 gig internal HD for music storage.  Computer was solely used for protools LE 5.  I knew I was kinda close on my memory for running the program after recording things with plug ins etc.  It was beginning to get slow at startup.  Anyway it's been a couple years since I used it.  I got it set up yesterday and it wouldn't launch and kept giving me error code 10. So I replaced the battery and tried again.  the small finder icon in middle of screen would then pop up and alternate with a "?". Then it would change to a pict of a hard drive disk and then a me alternating "?".  It would still give me the error code if I clicked on anything. So I then held down the shift key to turn off extensions as it had mentionEd to do a couple times. Still would give me the error code on my home page.  If I tried to get into my hd which is on desktop it would give me the message, but somehow it did open one occasion and I went into it and scrolled to disk verify and repair. Did it. Said things were fine. I then saved the results in a file which was then offered along with location. I chose desktop. Probably really bad idea in hind sight.. It did it, but now no matter if I turn extensions off,  the home screen pops up but then goes blank.  The hard drive icon along with the new folder, and my protools icon immediately dissapear. And it freezes.  at one point a message did pop up saying finder could not start up because there is not enough memory available.  I'm not a computer guy.  Ive tried finding the guy who helped me set this thing up 10 years ago but to no avail. If I can be guided to somehow uncover some of the unneeded memory usage I would then learn how to more efficiently use it.  How the heck do I even start. I can't get to a screen which shows what's eating my computers space to even start getting rid of unneeded stuff. Please help if you can.  I have so much to loose if I can't get it to work.  Btw...I no longer have the os9 disk. I think it was tossed 10 years ago or more.  May not even have my original pro tools disks anymore.  Uggh.

Ouch, tough spot, but offhand I'd say some memory may have gone bad, or maybe just needs re-seating after all this time.
Not much you can do, but try this anyway...

  • Ipod Touch - turn off slider appears on startup and ipod won't play music

Hoping someone can shed some light on my problem.
The two problems I have are:
    1) the red Turn Off slider appears immediately on turning the iPod on
    2) when the play button is hit, it automatically pauses immediately.
    The problems in detail:
I have a 2nd generation iPod touch that was working fine until I updated to 3.1.2 firmware. It worked fine for a few hours and then the touch screen began behaving weirdly. First, it wouldn't allow me to slide the unlock slider across the screen, and then when it finally would let me, it basically accessed random apps and moved randomly between the app home screens. All of this was jerky and erratic and it looked as if my iPod had gone schizo!
I took the iPod to a Genius at the Apple Store, but when I arrived the problem had fixed itself (at least, the random accessing of apps etc), but I noticed that on startup, the red turn off slider would appear immediately. After canceling the slider, I went to play some music. Immediately after hitting play, the ipod paused. Repeated attempts yielded the same results. It won't let me press play or listen to any music, regardless of whether it was iTunes purchased, an audiobook, podcast or whatever. You hit the play button, it turns into a pause button for a split second and then reverts back.
I have tried restoring the iPod a number of times on my computer and other macs (I'm running 10.5.8 OS X and iTunes 9). I have also done a couple of option+restores, having downloaded previous firmware versions (3.0 first, then 2.2.1). Both attempts left me with an error message (20). I am going spare about this and would really appreciate any advice!
There is one thing that worries me. I have been told by the Genius I spoke with that the moisture indicator inside the headphone jack shows that it has been exposed to water. Would this result in the above described problems? Everything else seems to work fine. I have even managed to get YouTube back after fiddling with the date settings (i.e. setting the date to 2030 and then back). I want to either restore my iPod to a previous firmware version that worked or make the update that I paid for work the way it should!
    I appreciate any suggestions!

this happened to me. I figgered that after you play apps like games which r side ways causes this for example nba live lite it caused the problem to me same when the slider stays in one spot i see that apps cause this problem. i just figgered it out cause it happens allways after certian game apps or other app. To fix this test all the apps and see and delete the ones which cause this but not all apps which r side ways cause it. I hope this helps

  • MacBook Pro frozen on startup screen with progress bar and then it turns off

    Hello, I have a MacBook Pro 15" of early 2012 with a i5 Intel, 4GB of RAM  and a  500 GB HD.
I was installing the new suit of Adobe, when suddenly my Mac got frozen, vertical coloured lines appeared and the image on screen went distorted. I had to reboot the Mac by holding the power button until the screen turned off and when I turned it on, the lines appeared again and it itself automatically rebooted. Then the screen (now with no vertical lines) got frozen on the startup grey screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel for hours with no response.
I tried to follow the steps of the official mac forums like verifying the HD with CMD+R and then Disk Utility, it says everything's fine; the same happens with CMD+S, no errors. I reinstalled Mavericks with the same CMD+R. I already reset the PRAM, SMC  and performed a Safe Boot staring up in Single user mode and Verbose Mode and nothing, the same startup screen. I made too thins thing of holding shift until the progress bar appeared.  Three days later (Today) I repeated the steps again and finally the verbose mode. Now, when I turn it on, the startup screen appears again (Apple Log and spinning wheel) with a progress bar. When it completes, the Mac turn itself off.
if you can help me, please. I don't know what else to do. The last thing is technical service.

  • How do i turn off automatic plugin check on startup... I have turned off in options/advanced, but still checks on startup

on firefox startup I get two tabs... one for google (my home page) the other for plugin check. I go to tools/advanced and turn off startup check for plugins, the restart firefox... the plugin check tabe still appears. All of my plugins are up to date!!! How do I stop this auto plugin check from taking place each time I start up firefox? This never was a problem before, just started yesterday and I can't stop it.

I started using Fire Fox to get away from this crap. I consider this forced plug in thing to be a tracking Trojan and pop up adds. It's my opinion this has become no different than I.E. or any other Micro Soft application where I loose control of how I manage my own computer applications by having things forced on me that I necessarily don't want. I plan to quit using Fire Fox until I am assured this doesn't happen any more and and feel confident my browsing and other web activity is not being monitored and tracked by Mozilla. What other data and applications can we assume they are looking at on our computers? I think if this is the direction they are now headed, other folks should do the same thing.

  • How do i turn off the startup sound on macbook pro?

how do i turn off the startup sound on macbook pro?

You don't. You may find some third-party software that will, however. Try Auto Mute.
    Alternatively, you can try this:
I think this is the best and simplest solution. Open a Terminal window and type (or copy/paste) the following to turn down the startup noise:
         sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume="%00"
    Press RETURN.
And to restore it to the original value type:
         sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume
    Press RETURN.
    That's all folks.

Every computer I ever had, the first thing I do is to turn off the startup sound because it is very annoying in a public place and sometimes in a quiet place. I have not been able to find out how to trun it off on my Air. I asked the guys at the stores and they just say you can't. That is really dumb. I turned off my speaker but that is not a practical way because I may not remember to turn it off when I shut down.
The question is how do I turn it off permenantly.
    Love to know.

  • My Macbook Pro (2010, 10.9.5) turns off by itself randomly

    Hi all
My Macbook Pro (mid 2010, 2.53 GHz, ram 4GB, Intel Core i5, Mac OS 10.9.5) turns off randomly while I am working. The screen turns black and I get a message that my "mac was turned off due to a problem". It turns on again and all seems normal. I haven't lost anything (yet), but it happened three times in the last 10 days and I am getting very nervous. Last time it happened I was working with MS PowerPoint, MS Office, Preview and Firefox. I repaired disk permissions, restarted and I am preparing to empty the system cache. I have Avast-antivirus installed on my mac. Any other suggestions?
Does anyone else experience the same problem?
    Thanx i advance
    Stavrinski

Thanx for the prompt answer. I checked the link and it could be the case. But my machine is 4 years old and- if it is a hardware issue- is not covered for repairs from Apple
I really don't want to mess with Apple service, it is expensive and takes an eternity...
Followed your tip and uninstalled Avast, although it has repeatedly located and blocked malware on my mac...
