2010 MBA incompatible with Thunderbolt display?
i have a macbook air with a minidisplay port. I now have a lovely black but inactive thunderbolt display. What have i missed? I was under the impression that the minidisplay port on the airbook could drive the thunderbolt screen.

So was I, but that impression turns out to be wrong, the computer driving the display must be 'Thunderbolt' enabled, which the 2010 models are not.

OS X 10.7.2.2 issues with Thunderbolt Display
Help! With Thunderbolt display, Mac-mini and OS X 10.7.2.2 I get a blank screen when mini reawakens from sleep. Moving the cursor around like a paint brush reveals a portion of the underlying log-in screen. Once I uncover my user icon and log-in, my desktop will appear and function normally!!!
IS this caused by (1) the Thunderbolt display, (2) the latest Lion update or a combination of both ? I experienced no problems with older display and Lion 10.7 !!
Any solutions/recommendations?Hello Drew,
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions. -
2010 iMac with thunderbolt display
Guys,
I'd like to extend my 2010 iMac with a second 27" display. Initially I was considering going for a 27" thunderbolt display as this is the only display type that us still for sale. However, from browsing the forum, I understand that the 2010 iMacs have a mini display port which is unable to drive a thunderbolt display, is this correct? If so, what are my options for a matching 27" monitor?
I was thinking of the following options but I would like to have someone confirm the possibility.
1) use a mini display port to thunderbolt adapter: does this exist? Would it work? If not I would say apple removes additional sales because people are not going to update their iMac just for a thunderbolt port, they will get a non apple monitor to play nicely with their iMac.
2) more expensive, but use a new thunderbolt iMac and use the old iMac *** an external display: I read on the forum somewhere that thunderbolt devices can output to mini display port displays using mini display port cables. Is this true? If so, would I be able to expend my desktop this way?
3) can I still buy a new mini display port 27" cinema display to match my 2010 iMac?
ThanksThe 27" Cinema Display is still available new from the online store, would be perfect for you. Also, don't be afraid of the refurb models available as well. Good way to save some money and get the same warranty coverage as new. Typing this on a 27" refurb iMac. Love it and saved a ton.

Blue Screen on MBA with Thunderbolt Display after wake-up
I'm running a MBA (summer 2012, OSX 10.8.3) with a Thunderbolt display.
Very often after wake-up, I have a blue screen on the built-in monitor while the external display shows the login-screen. The MBA is frozen and I have to enforce a restart.
Any ideas to resolve the problem much appreciated.ARD works only across a network, not via Target Display Mode. Your MBA will need to be connected to and active on your local network to be able to take control of your MBA from your MBP. I'm not certain if you can take control of a Mac connected via Target Display Mode, though I do know that applications on the system keep running, so it may be possible.
Note, though, that you don't need ARD to accomplish this assuming it is possible. The screen sharing feature built into OS X allows you to control on Mac from another with no extra software required.

HT204154 Is new 12 inch MB compatible with thunderbolt display??
so how will I be able to use my Thunderbolt display (currently used with a 2011 MBA) with the new 12 inch MB (just announced)? My thunderbolt display is a 2011 model
thanks Matt - not even with adaptors? Is it that the actually AV o/t is TB only?
Problem is a love the new MB and it fits my requirements really well (I travel a lot and don't need massive processor grunt)
Any monitors you'd recommend for the MB? Guess next generation apple display will be USB-C compliant
Many thanks for your assistance -
How to connect the macbook with thunderbolt display 27" to TV with RGB port?
Hi,
I have the following equipments in hands:
1. Macbook PRO 15 inch with 1 thunderbolt port, OS is Mavericks 10.9.2
2. Apple Thunderbolt display 27" identical to this : http://www.apple.com/displays/
3. A Samsung TV with RGB port, & HDMI port.
I want all these displays ( macbook, Apple thunderbolt display & the Samsung Tv) connected at the same time, I had a trial to connect them using a minidispaly adapter to RGB port & HDMI port in the TV but it didnt worked.
Please help!
Thank you.The Thunderbolt dock adds extra ports:
HDMI (up to 2560x1600 with the Elgato, 1920 x 1200 with the CalDigit)
3 USB 3
Ethernet
Audio in
Audio out
You could also use a Belkin Thunderbolt dock.
<http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F4U055/>
It includes a FireWire port, but no HDMI port, so would need a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (1920 x 1200 max) for the TV. This would use the second Thunderbolt port, so the Belkin dock has to be used with the port on the back of the Thunderbolt display, not between the computer and display.
If you don't need the extra ports, use a Thunderbolt hard drive (with two Thunderbolt ports)
<http://www.seagate.com/external-hard-drives/desktop-hard-drives/backup-plus-desk -mac-thunderbolt/>
This can be your Time Machine drive. Connect the Thunderbolt display to the computer, one port of the drive to the port on the back of the display, and a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter to the second Thunderbolt port on the drive.
You will have three displays with differing resolutions, so mirroring is not going to fill each screen at full resolution. -
GPU Panic with Thunderbolt Display after upgrading to 10.9.3
Hi everybody! I have a MacBook Pro Retina Mid 2012 and use it with a Thunderbolt Display 27". After upgrading to 10.9.3, a GPU Panic error started annoying me. All displays (thunderbolt and mac) go black and I have to hold down the power button to force the shutdown and then power on.
Sometimes, I connect the display and it works for some days. Sometimes, it crashes just when I connect the thunderbolt display. It's just not what we expect from such premium product.
I've read the posts similar to this, did a PRAM reset, etc, but none of this worked for me. Any ideas?
This is the last crash log I had today. Please anybody help me! Thanks.

Macbook pro looses login settings with thunderbolt display
I've noticed that on occasion my MacBook Pro looses its desktop settings when connected to a Thunderbolt display. Why Thunderbolt display discards my MacBook Pro window environment settings upon boot-up is unknown to me. I can tell when this happens when my desktop loads different backgrounds from those on my MacBook Pro. Furthermore, the option in the System Preferences for changing my desktop background will cease to function. I even notice system wide speed degradation.
In order to correct this and reload my MacBook Pro settings I must identify a specific file named “com.apple.loginwindow.plist” and delete it. Doing so resolves whatever existing conflict so that Thunderbolt displays the correct background and enables System Preferrences to work properly.
I would appreciate very much if anyone has a resolution for this problem.
Respectfully,
TomBoltzI think you need to do a search of the of these forums to see if there is an answer. I saw a lot of suggestions, but the #1 solution is buying a brand new cable. I have personal experience with that. My son recently switched from an HP to a MacBook Pro. The HDMI cable worked perfectly with the HP. It didn't with the Mac. He got a new cable for the Mac, everything resolved itself.
I have heard all kinds of speculation on it, but it happens frequently enough that there must be something going on. I'd spend $30 on a new MiniDisplayPort to DVI connector or whatever you use. -
IMac won't start with Thunderbolt Display connected after firmware update
After updating my thunderbolt display firmware to version 1.2 this morning via the App Store, my mid-2014 iMac won't start up with the external display connected. I can get the iMac to start up only by disconnecting the display's thunderbolt connector. After the iMac comes up, I can reconnect the display and everything appears to function normally. I've tried several restarts and the iMac won't start up with the display connected. Anyone else experience this?

I use a 27" Thunderbolt display on my macbook pro. If I disconnect the power supply from the mac, the monitor stops working.
Is that normal or do I have to make some changes on the setup ?
Thanks
+GLGreetings koningsvaren,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you connect your MacBook Pro to an external Thunderbolt display and everything works as it should while connected to power, but once power is removed from the MacBook Pro, the second display no longer functions. It sounds like you may be using this configuration with your MacBook Pro closed, otherwise known as closed-clamshell mode. In order to use a second display with your Mac portable in closed-clamshell mode, the Mac portable must be connected to power. Please refer to the attached article for more information. If this is not the case, please let me know.

Is there a switch I can use with thunderbolt display and 2 computers
I have the new Mac Mini and the new Macbook Air plus the 27 inch thunderbolt display. The majority of the time, I will be using the thunderbolt display hooked up directly to the Mac Mini. I have already tested the theory that if I turn off the Mac mini, I can use a separate thunderbolt cable to hook to the port on the back of the display and to the port on the Air and have it show up on the screen. Many people said this was not possible as the port on the back of the display was only unidirectional and to be used for thunderbolt accessories like hard drives. It actually works quite well and so at the very least, I can leave the cable plugged into the back of the display and use it with the Mac Air if I turn off the Mac Mini. At least I don't have to remove the cable from the Mac Mini and move it over to the Mac Air. I actually looked at the Kanex switch which would do what I wanted it to do, but unfortunately it says it will NOT work with the thunderbolt display. Apparently it only works with the Cinema display. Does anyone know if there is a thunderbolt switch out there?
ThanksThanks, Clinton....that's what I was thinking too. On the upside, I don't have to remove the actual thunderbolt display cable going to the back of the Mini, I just have to keep a cable in the output port on the back of the display for my Macbook Air. Then I just turn off the Mini, plug the cable into the Air and I'm ready. What I find interesting though is that the Kanex "looks" like it will do exactly what I want it to, but apparently it will only work with Mini Display port like that found on the "cinema display". Maybe one day........
Thanks again! -
Retina macbook pro with thunderbolt display causes speaker issues
I have a thunderbolt display and used the speakers fine on old macbook pro. I now plug in my new retina macbook pro 15" with mountain lion and the sound plays fine for a while then starts to crackle real bad and then stops all together. If I switch the the laptop speakers then switch back after 30 or so minutes the thunderbolt speakers will work again for a short amount of time then again crackle and stop.
This may be mountain lion related but I have tried another non-retina version macbook pro with mountain lion and did not notice the issue but it was only for an hour or so. So this leads me to belive its the computer.
Any suggestions? its really really anoying and wasting my time trying to fix it.I have the exact same issue. I hauled the TB Display into the Apple Store 3 times and finally they replaced it. Come to find out this new one has the same issue still. So It has to be rMBP related at this point. Unfortunately I don't think I have it under warranty still and the issue is hard to demonstrate. I recorded videos of it but every time I go into the store and plug it is the same as switching the speakers from internal to external and it takes 30-60 mins before it degrates to scratching sounds.
Please let me know if you ever foudn a solution. Im going to try to keep taking it in until I can get this resolved. -
MacBook Pro Retina with Thunderbolt Display Issues
I have issues when connecting my MacBook Pro to the Thunderbolt Display when I don't do a fresh boot of the MacBook Pro. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, the Thunderbolt Display usually turns on succesfully, but none of my USB devices (mouse, keyboard) respond and when I try to disconnect the Thunderbolt, the MacBook doesn't realize it's been disconnected and thus I'm just left with the background screen and have to shut it down by holding the power button for a few seconds.
With a fresh boot, everything works fine. Are you supposed to have to shut down and restart everytime you hook up this monitor? Has anyone had these issues?I have the exact same issue. Won't start with thunderbolt display attached
Almost new 3.5 Ghz Intel Core i7 iMac 2014 SSD only, 32GB disk running 10.9.4. Absolutely will not start up from shutdown state with an additional 27" Thunderbolt display attached. Unplug the display, boots fine. Then plug in the display, all works peachy. Sleep is also broken and hangs on restart, except if you only sleep the displays, not the CPU then it always wakes up fine. This is pathetic, very Windows-like.
Suggestions?10.9.3 and 10.9.4 have known issues with displays attached via Thunderbolt (for example see here Second display problem with 10.9.4 and 10.9.4 - Thunderbolt display for 6630M (Mini mid-2011) still broken ).
