2010 MBP 13" screen failure
Hi - realise this question has been asked in numerous formats, but I'm struggling to find a situation that exactly mirrors mine, so please forgive the repeat...
My MBP screen went black last night (while I was using it), and no amount of reboots, NVRAM resets, etc fixed it. This morning, I plugged it into the TV via HDMI, which seems to work fine, but the LCD remains dark and under Graphics/Displays, it says "No display detected".
Seems the LCD has gone awol - anyone know why this might be? Seems to me it could be a dodgy connector, but could it be something much worse (and more expensive)? As you may be able to tell, I am a complete idiot when it comes to these things...
Any suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks
CharmlessNurk,
yes, it could be either a dodgy connector or a dead LCD. If you’re uncomfortable with mucking about the insides of your MacBook Pro, the best option would be to make an appointment at your closest Apple store to have them run their diagnostics, to see if they can determine what needs to be sorted out.

Best way to clean 2010 MBP antiglare screen
Hi guys,
Anyone got any tips on the best way to clean the antiglare screen on 2010 MBPs?
I have a couple of fingerprint smudges etc. on it but haven't wanted to attempt to clean it with anything as I don't know much about the surface of the screen (and therefore what might potentially ruin it!)
Thanks!Do not use any cleaning agents other than pure (preferably distilled) water, so no residue is left.
Have 2 soft cloths. Dampen one, wipe the screen with it in even up/down motion, and then immediately dry up the screen with the dry cloth, so no streaks are left. Do not rub too much, just gently mop up the thin film of water.
This works really well for finger prints and stuck dust.
If you only have a few dust specs, try compressed can of air first. -
my 2010 27 in imac screen has failed, right half of screen grey shadow, dark, i note that this has been a problem in the past, seems that apple ireland are not concerned? any opinions or suggestions? seems that there are major reliability issues with imac
extremely disappointed with product and apple support.Your are missing the point. Yes, there will be the occasional Mac that has a display failure.. Yes, there will be a number of LCD displays that fail out of the millions of Macs that are assembled with LCD displays. And yes, techs will be seeing those occasional display failures over the wide array of Mac models upon which they work. But there are a number of companies that make LCD displays for Apple with the various Mac models that exist. And sometimes there are different companies making the displays for the same Mac model. These are the random, occasional display failures that can be expected with every computer manufacturer who assembles massive numbers of computers; Apple, Toshiba, Dell, Sony and on and on.
But the point is that the link that I gave you points to a consistent mass failure of displays on the same iMac model, assembled in the same factory, over the same time period with displays from the same manufacturer. That doesn't exist for your iMac. If it did we would see folks posting about it here in large numbers, just as we did back in 2006 and 2007, which we are not. -
Screen Sharing: iMac -- 2010 MBP 17"?
I am thinking of buying a 27" iMac to run FCP andI wish to use my old 2010 MBP 17" laptop as a second monitor. Can I use Screen Sharing to do this?
I used my old spider2 to create a new profile for the laptop. IF anyone needs it let me know and I'll be happy to e-mail it out.

I want to do a clean install of maverick on my 2010 mbp. I need to know what disk to use and also how i take certain files off my external hard drive and put on my computer. When I was having problems with my airport they did a clean install and they pulled files of my time machine. however they forgot to put the partition back in for a windows side. Originally I had Parellels on my computer. After my external hard drive got corrupted i called apple and they fixed the problem but didn't have me set up the time machine except for the external hard drive. Now my only back up is from the external not from the laptop. I am not sure how to do any of this. I am not computer savvy...PLEASE I NEED HELP>
First, you need to make a backup of your MBP onto your external drive. I suggest you start by cloning your MBP drive to the external drive:
Clone Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
button.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
to the Destination entry field.
5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
the Source entry field.
6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
This clone is fully bootable and also contains a clone of your Recovery HD.
Second, you need to do a clean install of OS X onto your MBP as follows:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should accomplish your goals. You will have a clean install of OS X on your MBP and a bootable clone of your old system and all your files on the external drive. -
IWeb transfer from 2010 MBP applications disc
Hi guys, I have a convulted problem and I wonder if anyone can help me. My old mid-2010 MBP 15" died on Christmas Eve after a long downward spiral -- it was like It's a Wonderful Life without the last five minutes -- and I've only just got a late 2012 Mac Mini as a replacement. I had a Time Machine backup (via Time Capsule) but, like an idiot, I'd only synched my data rather than my applications. So I moved my files over to the new computer, and I've restored nearly all of my applications since they could be (re)downloaded easily. But the one thing I'm still missing is iWeb. I know it's been discontinued but I still use it to manage a very small website. So I thought that I could probably get hold of the application via the Applications reinstall DVD that came with my MBP back in 2010 -- I have the disc, and I was able to run it via Remote Disc on my wife's old MacBook (which still has an actual dvd drive, zounds). But when I try to run the installer package, my Mini runs the program to determine whether the package can be installed and immediately tells me that "these applications are either already installed on your computer or this computer is not compatible with this disc." I had thought I could simply run the installer, then uncheck all the apps save for iWeb -- but it seems I can't get past first base.
Does anyone have any ideas on how I could retrieve iWeb -- if not from this disc, then via some other method? The HD on the busted MBP is not really an option since the stricken machine has a horrible logic board failure that scrambles the whole system within seconds of startup. I guess I could get the HD out of the MBP and try to read it via a disk adapter -- and have now actually ordered an adapter, because I want to be ready for my Time Capsule's eighteen-month anniversary -- but DHL is arriving tomorrow to pick up the old machine so I may have missed that window. (Apple very kindly agreed to replace the machine, even though it's a couple of years old, because it was so unreliable -- so that part of the story, at least, has a happy ending.)
Thanks in advance for any help on offer, and apologies for all the extraneous information. You can just copy the iWeb 3 applicaiton from your old MBP to the Mini. Then give this a try:
In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder. So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

10.6.7 update has slowed my 2010 MBP drastically. Help!
I recently updated my 2010 MBP, 2.4 GHz, 4GB RAM to 10.6.7 and since I installed the update the performance has dropped massively. Upon booting it takes 7 minutes from when the deskptop appears for the finder and the dock to become available. The only piece of advice I could find on this was to repair permissions which I've done twice to no avail.
Any ideas? Do I need to reinstall OS X from the CD or can I revert back to 10.6.6 some way? Will I need to back-up my hardrive first?
Cheers!William,
I booted in safe mode and got a 7.5 minute delay from when the login screen apeared until I was able to type in my password. As with the normal start-up (I am the only user therefore there is normally no login screen) I could move the mouse pointer but not click on anything.

Can't make / receive calls - Mid 2010 MBP
So I have a Mid 2010 MBP 13 inch model. I just downloaded OSX Yosemite and I've got text message forwarding working between my phone and my Macbook Pro but I can not get the calling feature to work. I have "iPhone Cellular Calls" enabled under the iPhone settings but when I go to the FaceTime settings on my Macbook Pro there is no box to enable iPhone Cellular Calls in the preferences pane (like many of the guides I've seen have showed, my preference pane simply doesn't have the option). My phone and my laptop are both signed into the same iCloud accounts and both are associated with emails (3 different emails to be exact... a school email, elon.edu, a gmail, and the icloud email). Any help please?
I know that handoff and some continuity features aren't supported for pre 2012 MacBook Pros but I've got texts working and I thought calling was supposed to work as well.
Does bluetooth have to be on and connected between both devices?
Thanks in advance
-CamOH and the cause of the problem of not being able to respond was that whenever I tried to enter text (via the iPad listed above) nothing would enter the text box even though I clearly had it selected and the iPad seemed to be allowing me to at least type a message (although the nohpthing was showing up on the screen. Very strange indeed. Anyways, help still needed on the original issue

After installing 10.10, my MBP 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM is dreadfully slow. I have 200+GB of drive space left. The slowness is many forms. It boots noticeably slower, It launches apps slower, The apps themselves are laggy, and internet browsing is slower in safari and firefox.
An example of lag in apps would be Vienna when moving from one news article to another there I now get the pinwheel. MS word lags behind my typing. This did not happen before the upgrade.
Internet pages now have several seconds of lag before they even start to load. Even pages already visited.Same issue for me. 2010 MBP, 4gb RAM with more than 200GB of free space left on the 500GB HDD. Installed Yosemite yesterday in the afternoon and have been experiencing the pinwheel pretty much with every single click of the trackpad regardless of which program I'm using, even in system preferences, even doing something as simple as clicking to type in a text field.
There's also quite a long delay between hitting, for example, the volume keys and having the graphic display on the screen and iTunes will freeze up every few seconds when playing a song.
Internet is noticeably slower as well, which is only made more painful by the pinwheeling every time I try to do anything within the browser itself.
I have done everything in those macmachines articles short of actually reinstalling the OS altogether, and it still hasn't solved the problem. -
Hey guys,
I have a 2010 MBP and it's served me well even as I type. Although in the past few months I've noticed a tiny bit of sluggishness, I'm not sure whether it's because of Mavericks or just wear and tear. Ever since I've had my laptop, every now and then the HD will make a "clunk" noise. After some research I found out that this is the HD reading head parking itself as an energy saving feature. But lately I've been hearing it at least once a day. It's not annoying, it's just making me a little paranoid that it's on its way out. If anyone can help me figure out why this is happening or reassure me that it's not pending failure, thank you in advance.
Sam.Take the original installation disk and insert in the slot, start up your MBP holding the C key. Proceed as if you were installing the OSX, BUT when you see a menu line on top of the display, select UTILITIES. From the drop down menu select Disk Utility. Then select Disk Utility>First Aid and run Verify and Repair. See what the results are.
If you are as paranoid I would be, I simply would replace the HDD. Noises such as that are NOT a good sign.

Trouble with Initial Windows 8 Restart on 2010 MBP
I just attempted to download 64-bit Windows 8 onto my 2010 MBP via Boot Camp. It is a legal version I got through my university; I downloaded the .iso file onto a flash drive through a Windows computer, and then burned it onto a blank DVD via Disk Utility on my Mac. I also downloaded the Windows Support Software onto a second flash drive. The installation completed and my computer restarted.
When it did, it showed a black screen with the 4-rectangle Windows 8 logo in the middle. It freezes there for ~10-15 minutes, and then shows me a blue screen titled "Recovery" and says the error code is 0xc00000e9. This process can be repeated by turning my computer off and then on again. I have tried removing all external devices (except the burned DVD disk, which I cannot figure out how to eject; the eject button does nothing), with no success. I also cannot switch back to Os X by holding the "option" button at the white screen; my computer automatically tries to load Windows regardless. Please let me know if you have any suggestions; aside from what I have just described, my computer has no discernible functionality.

will internet recovery work on my mid 2010 MBP with yosemite and the firmare internet recovery update designed for OS lion
Yes, it does. The point is can your computer use full Internet Recovery with the firmware update or not. If not then you have to begin with the Snow Leopard DVD that came with your computer and do an Erase and Install.
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
However, if you can use full Internet Recovery:
Install Yosemite, Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer. -
Hello Everyone:
MY mid-2010 MBP won't start and instead of the usual start up chime, I get a relatively short beep every few seconds until I turn it of. once in a while< like now< it starts but according to my teen, video is very choppy. i watch video but different speed i think. I use a host site to stream videos like american horror story, scandal, walking dead but no japanese anime - which is what my kid watches as well. But he also watches tv shows from a similar site but finds all videos in general-choppy. I've seen some choppiness in the scandal video; i would have thought it would have been the Walking Dead. Can anyone tell me what they feel my system's issue is?
I have another issue but i believe they're completely unrelated so i'll post it separately (that's a hopeful invite for all your mac "doctors" who love to 'heal'.)
Thanks again, in advance, for your help.
Regards,
CiaochiaoIt's probably a failing graphics processor. The 2010 MBP are notorious for that: MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video - Apple Support

2010 MBP 13" hard drive never spins down... ever.
Hi Folks,
I have searched - and even found others with a similar problem - but the threads died out without a solution, so....
I have a pretty new 2010 MBP 13" 2.4ghz with stock 250gb HDD (I think it's a Toshiba, IIRC). I noticed that the palm rests were vibrating constantly and there was noise that never went away, so I investigated. It is the hard drive under the right palm rest, which is constantly spinning. My hands feel like I just came in from mowing the lawn!
Now, I just came from ownership of a 2008 MB which also had the Core2Duo processor and which I used about the same. No new programs or new usage to speak of. Yet that hard drive was not spinning all the time; in fact, it was usually spun down and only spun up from time to time.
I do have the preference checked for "Put hard disk to sleep when possible" on both battery and AC. I downloaded iStat and I can't see any reason for it not to spin down. i.e. light use (or even with all programs closed), cool CPU, CPU 90% un-used, very few page outs (not sure which of this would affect HD though).
Still, it NEVER spins down.
It's not clicking or making any of the "I'm a hard drive about to die" type noises. It's just a constant spinning hum.
Can anyone help me with this? It's making me dislike what should be a nice upgrade from my MB and iBook. Of course I am still under warranty, but I'm 4 hours from the Apple store, and plus I just like to try to figure things out on my own if possible. Gaining understanding of how things work is a plus too
Thank you in advance for any help
Stixer
Message was edited by: StixerI don't know if anyone will click on this since I already marked it solved, but I will try it and then if not I'll start a new thread. Just don't want to clutter up the forum if I don't need to.
So anyway, it was stated earlier in this thread that it is not possible for the internal hard drive to spin down while the computer is turned on, and that the system pref for "put hard disk to sleep (i.e. spin down) when possible" check box could only really apply to external drives.
I'm no expert, so although I sure thought the drives in my previous Apple laptops were spun down most of the time (I'm a light user), I figured that okay, they must have just seemed like they were spinning down, and my new one must just be really noisy (even though the "noise" sounds just like my older drives did when they "spun up," but I guess they were just doing something else).
But okay, so this morning I was reading Anandtech's really great and thorough review of the new MBP's and in the maximum battery life test they did this:
+Light Web Browsing+
+Here we're simply listing to MP3s in iTunes on repeat while browsing through a series of webpages with no flash on them. Each page forwards on to the next in the series after 20 seconds.+
+The display is kept at 50% brightness, all screen savers are disabled, but *the hard drive is allowed to go to sleep if there's no disk activity*. The wireless connection is enabled and connected to a local access point less than 20 feet away. *This test represents the longest battery life you can achieve on the platform while doing minimal work. The results here are comparable to what you'd see typing a document in TextEdit or reading documents.*+
Doesn't this seem to indicate that my original understanding was correct, and that internal hard drives do have the ability to spin down under light use? It sounds like it to me. My typical usage is exactly what they are talking about above, and apparently their hard drive spins down during such use, unless I'm completely mis-understanding them. Mine also seemed to in my previous Apple laptops.
So now I'm feeling frustrated, as I hate having an issue that I can't get to the bottom of. Whether or how I can fix it or not is secondary, but I want to understand how it is supposed to work!
Thank you very much to anyone who reads through, and even more if you reply

I've seen some mention of this problem here, there, and everywhere, but no solutions. The skinny:
