2010 MBP 15" i7 - best performance upgrade?
Recently replaced my Mac Pro with a MBP. I find the MBP a bit sluggish in comparison, which I suspect is down to the disk subsystem (500Gb 5400 rpm vs 2x500Gb 7200rpm in RAID-0 config) rather than CPU (dual core 2.66Ghz i& vs. 2x dual core 2.66Ghz Xeon) or RAM (Both 4Gb).
Looking for a performance boost and considering either:
750Gb 7200 RPM driver upgrade
500Gb Seagate Momentus (500gb + 4Gb SSD) drive upgrade
Upgrade to 8Gb RAM from 4Gb.
Only want to do 1 at the moment, so not RAM and drive upgrades.
Primary reason for performance boost is with Aperture. any experience as to which would provide the most immediate benefit?

If your performance boost is targeted for Aperture, simply get a 7200rpm external, and only use it for your Aperture library (and another for backing it up). Get a size of drive large enough to handle your library, with some room to grow of course. Fragmentation is probably your biggest issue, and this will give you a HUGE improvement in your Aperture work. Don't use your library on your boot drive.
Your RAM is more than sufficient, as I'm running an older MBP 17" with 2GB RAM (with eSATA external) and am having no speed issues at all. My current F2 eSATA is dual 5400rpm drives (until upgrade to 7200rpm, one step at a time).
The key for your speed issue, library ONLY on the external. Don't use it for any other file storage of any type. Any other use will fragment the library and slow you down considerably. While 7200rpm is faster than 5400 (duh), it's not like you're streaming video either, you're working on photos.
Do what you can afford, and fortunately your fix is rather cheap these days.
The other consideration for your external is what type: eSATA best, FW800 with only one device on the chain, USB last. Once my library was on its own external drive, that's when I noticed the biggest speed boost. Going from FW800 to eSATA was another bump up, while noticeable it wasn't as much as simply putting the library on its own drive.

Why does my 2010 MBP keep restarting itself after upgrading to Yosemite?
This problem actually started once I upgraded to Mavericks - my MacBook Pro will randomly restart itself every 30 seconds - 15 minutes or so. I don't really have a good estimate of the occurrence though since it is so random and there seems to be no rhyme or reason. The only thing I can say is that it pretty much always restarts if I am resizing windows. When I upgraded to Yosemite from Mavericks, it kept restarting itself but now it restarts twice every time! It's added an additional restart in the middle of the boot up screen. I reformatted the drive, reinstalled the original software and then reinstalled all the software upgrades and the problem persists. I know I should probably take it in to see a Genius as my best guess is that there seems to be an error with the graphics card, but I'm a college student on a very tight budget, so if there's anything I can do myself to fix this that would be great! I downloaded this app: https://gfx.io/ and set my graphics card to "integrated only" and it has solved the problem. Just remember to always set it to "integrated only" if it's not already set to that after anytime you restart your computer. -
SATA II or III on late 2010 MBP - Also SATA III and SSD performance

I would like to confirm that only the new 2011 MBP's have 6gb SATA interfaces. My MBP reports Series 5 and 3gb on both optical and HD bay. I have an SSD in the optical bay and a WD Scorpio Black in the HD slot. Both have a negotiated link speed of 3gb. I put the SSD in the optical bracket and the spinning drive in the real drive slot to take advantages of the physical protection in the HD bay.
If the new MBP's have one SATA III channel, I would assume it's important to put the SSD in that slot.
My SSD has a SATA II (3gb) interface. Some new ones have 6gb. Do SSD drives even approach that throughput or 3gb throughput? Which leads to the question, would a SATA III SSD perform better in a SATA III MBP?
I know the benchmarks may not even be noticeable in real life use for most of usI have just out a SSD on my 2010 MBP, from all the info i could find both the HDD and optibay in the 2010 late SATA II, this is the reason i put my SSD in the optibay as the speed would be the same.
I did think about getting a SATA III SSD for the future when i upgrade but at the time they were very expensive and i had read reports about problems connecting to a SATA II.
The new MBP do only have SATA III in the HDD spot so this would be the best place for any SATA III SSD.
Personally on a 2010 MBP im happy, i still get great speeds Vs a HDD but with keeping the HDD in its original spot i get to keep spin down and the motion sensor. -
Upgrade my 2010 MBP or Purchase a new Mac?

I need some advice and would really value your opinions. I have a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro and it's been great to me for 5 years, however, it is so slow compared to my work computer which is a 2013 MacBook Air. Since I don't personally own my work's MacBook Air, I am afraid to personalize it - install my apps, media, etc. I love how fast my MacBook Air is and knowing how fast a computer can be makes using my MacBook Pro very frustrating. I don't use my MacBook Pro for anything substantial: no gaming, no photoshop, etc., but would love it if it was faster overall (transferring data, downloading). All I use it for is primarily web browsing, word/excel documents, and iTunes (have all my media stored on an external hard drive but my iTunes reads it wirelessly from my Apple Airport Extreme - where my external hard drive is plugged into).
My question for you all is this: is upgrading to an SSD worth it? Can I make my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro comparable in overall speed to my work's 2013 MacBook Air? If not, will it at least make is noticeably quicker? I already upgraded my RAM to 8GB without seeing much improvement. I've heard that SSD's can make a huge difference (especially if you get the right one). If true...which SSD do you recommend for my Machine specifically?
I recently upgraded from OS X 10.7.5 (Lion) to Yosemite and noticed a lot of glitches...is that normal? All these issues seem to point me in the direction of spending the $1500+ on a new computer but my current 2010 MacBook Pro runs decent for its age and I would appreciate not having to spend the extra dinero...idk what to do but am interested in hearing what you would do. I have a 2010 MBP 13" with Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz (slower than yours) and it runs awesomely, doing the same stuff you do with yours...
If you want an SSD, consider OWC's Data Doubler kit. Lets you turn your CD drive into a hard drive bay, so you can have an SSD and the hard disk - and make your own Fusion Drive (which can really improve performance). Be warned that there are issues with this in Yosemite, and you need a Mavericks boot drive or recovery partition (or OS X 10.10.0 or beta) to run the commands. The whole Fusion Drive process is pretty advanced, so take that into consideration. -

Should I upgrade my 2010 MBP 13 to SSD?
I have a 2010 MBP 13 in. I am considering upgrading the HHD to SSD or should I just upgrade the HHD in size. I am not a gamer and don't work with media. I primarily use my MBP for school, surfing the web,music download, and minor photo editing. Also, is there a need to upgrade RAM? I am being told not to. If I am advised to upgrade I will be upgrading from a 250gb HHD. Note: Any and all advice is appreciated.
An SSD would certainly speed things up - although most SSDs are capable of 6.0 Gbps speeds, the SATA bus on your model only supports 3.0 Gbps speeds. But it would certainly be much faster than the spinning platters in your current hard drive. For information and a buyer's guide to SSDs see Sean's SSD Buyers Guide & Information Thread.
If you've only 4GB of RAM, you could certainly stand to upgrade to 8GB - that, for me, is the 'sweet spot' for running current versions of OS X and newer applications. A good source for RAM upgrades is Crucial - go to their site and use the System Scanner tab to determine which is right for your model.

Best way to clean 2010 MBP antiglare screen

Anyone got any tips on the best way to clean the antiglare screen on 2010 MBPs?
I have a couple of fingerprint smudges etc. on it but haven't wanted to attempt to clean it with anything as I don't know much about the surface of the screen (and therefore what might potentially ruin it!)
Thanks!Do not use any cleaning agents other than pure (preferably distilled) water, so no residue is left.
Have 2 soft cloths. Dampen one, wipe the screen with it in even up/down motion, and then immediately dry up the screen with the dry cloth, so no streaks are left. Do not rub too much, just gently mop up the thin film of water.
This works really well for finger prints and stuck dust.
If you only have a few dust specs, try compressed can of air first. -
What is the best SSD for a 2010 MBP?
I'm interested in buy a Solid State Drive for my MBP because the prices are finally getting to be semi-reasonable. Since my computer is a mid-2010 i7 MacBook Pro, I know that it does not support SATA III (apparently you can still use a SATA III drive, but there is no point in spending the extra money for one?). Currently I have a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB, which is an improvement over the stock drive, but apparently an SSD would blow it away.
I've been sort of overwhelmed while researching drives because I had no idea there were so many differences between brands and drives. Right now, the Intel 320 series is looking like the way to go (I'm looking for 120-160GB drives at $300 and under). Is there something else I should be looking at?Hi Benjamin,

Some like CAS2013 to CAS2010/2007, CAS2013 to CAS2013.

MBP 13 Inch Mid 2010 Only accepting 6 GB Ram upgrade not 8GB
I just tried upgrading my ram today from 4GB to 8GB and the computer will only accept 6GB. Not both 2x4GB sticks. The Ram is within the specs for the computer and should be working just fine. Not sure what is going on. Both sticks work with a 2gb stick but not together. Any help would be appreciated. Here is the specs on the Memory. G.Skill 2x4GB DDR3 SODIMM 204PIN PC3-10666
A 2010 MBP RAM should have these specifications: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM. The RAM you installed does not appear to match what is required.
Macs are very selective when it come to RAM. OWC and Crucial are the most reliable vendors for Mac compatible RAM.
I suggest that you return the RAM and purchase from the afore mentioned vendors.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.
Print the first page of the panic report, if any, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued on February 24, 2011, so the recall has nominally ended. Some units may have been sold after that date by Apple as refurbished, or by resellers as new, and they might still be covered.
Residents of the EU may be entitled to warranty service for up to six years after purchase.
Some owners report that their unit was repaired under the program after the deadline had passed. Others report that the repair was covered by the extended warranty from a credit-card issuer. Again, your experience may vary.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired free of charge, and you don't want to pay for the service, you may (or may not) be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.
If you're dissatisfied with Apple's response, please keep in mind that no one here represents the company or can help with customer-service issues.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
Mid-2010 MBP, retire it or keep on chugging?
I have a mid-2010 MBP that has never failed me in the 5 years I have been using it. It is slower than it used to be, but that's probably because I have the Hard Drive maxed out to within about 30 gigs of it's 320 gig storage. I also have not upgraded the RAM, so it is operating on 4 gb RAM. I have kept it completely up to date and malware/virus free. It is currently running Yosemite 10.10.2.
I am ready to buy a new MBP, and I'm considering wiping this one, upgrading it to 8 gb RAM, and giving it to my teenage son to use for music production and editing. Here are my questions:
1) Am I tempting fate? I don't want to put money into or give him a computer that is likely to crap out and maybe have him lose his hard work. Is it just time to retire this old gal?
2) If there is a lot of life left in her, should I take her to the Apple Store and have them do some sort of "tune up," or just change out the RAM myself (I've done this on other mac laptops I've had) and erase/reinstall myself?
THANKS for your input! Michelle1. Teach your son about backups. If the computer craps out it's not a problem when he has backups. Furthermore, he's losing something he didn't pay for if the computer fails.
2. There's nothing the Apple Store can do that you can't do yourself for less money. Just erase the drive and reinstall OS X. If you want you can put in more RAM and even a larger HDD. -
Optimizing system for best performance/stability and a custom kernel
I have ArchLinux running on a MacBook 4.1 (early 2008), and it's running very well so far. But I would like to optimize it for best performance and stability (but not at the cost of losing 'graphical interface' quality). I want to compile a custom kernel, and I actually did once, but didn't do it well (and removed it), so I need some help from experts to tell me what should I disable or enable when compiling a custom kernel.

What's the best specifications for 27" iMac in order to run Windows for best performance?
Hey there. I'm based in the UK and in the process of saving up for my first ever iMac (the new 27" model starting from £1699) after years of owning PC's and laptops, but now I'm finally fed up with Windows-based machines, they just don't cut it when it comes to performance and workload...etc.
I wanted to pick iMac users on the community to get clear advice on what the ideal specifications I should consider configuring my iMac when I finally get round to placing my order in March/April. I aim to run Windows 7/ or 8 via Parallels as I hear it's very good and from what video tutorials of it I've seen on YouTube it appears impressive to think the iMac can handle this at the same time as running Mountain Lion.
The ram I plan on upgrading myself manually, yes - I've sussed that one that very quickly due to Apple's extensive £400 fee to simply upgrade the iMac to 32GB, Crucial here I come!
...I digress a little. I'm torn between the Quad-core i5 and i7 as I don't want to get something that won't deliver best performance when it comes to running Windows in parallel (or coherence mode as I hear it's called). Below are some specs I've configured on 2 saved iMacs in my saved baskets.

I'd appreciate anybody's time and patience on this little matter. Thank you.You don't need to go overboard on your hardware to run windows effectively. I bootcamp win7 on a late 2008 MacBook Pro with no issues. However, for an intense windows game I boot straight into windows. If you do not plan on gaming other than an occasional instance by your brother than this should be an acceptable solution.
One caveat is ram which you have already stated your are upgrading.
A general rule of thumb I live by is get the best you can afford now and it will prolong the need to upgrade in the future. That being said... The choices you have provided are all good choices. Preference on screen size will dictate your overall decision, of course. The need for i5 vs i7 CPU is normally not a factor for the majority of users. If you need to save some money then by all means choose the lesser configuration as it will handle windows fine.
One place you should consider the upgrade is the video card. Since you cannot upgrade this after purchase it is advisable to do this now. Also, the differences between the 675mx and the 680mx are far greater than what the naming implies.
Also, as mentioned in a previous post, the 3TB fusion drive can't bootcamp windows. There is a hack for the non-fusion version, but I have not heard of anyone getting that hack to work on the fusion drive. There are other creative options you can implement to make this work, however, it will require an additional investment in some 3rd party hardware. For a novice Mac user I would recommend the smaller fusion drive and external thunderbolt/USB storage as dictated by your needs in the future.

As has been pointed out, OWC is an excellent source for Mac compatible RAM. Crucial is another first rate source for Mac RAM. RAM from either vendor will work just as well as any purchased from Apple with the bonus of being less expensive and having a lifetime guarantee.
