2011 and 12 macs won't firewire older ones will

I have an iMac (mavericks) 2011 and a Macbook pro(mountain lion) 2012
neither of these will connect to my Panasonic DVX-100B via firewire.
My 2008 (Leopard) macbook pro and my 2005 mac mini (tiger)  will both connect and capture video.
Is this due to a change in OS and it handling of firewire or is it more the change from firewire 400 to 800?
If I upgrade the 2008 macbook will I loose the ability to connect to my camera via firewire?
thanks in advance

If you have a 4 pin to 9 pin cable, it should connect OK. You can also get Firewire to Thunderbolt adaptors.
I haven't tried any tape captures on Mavericks, but I haven't had  troublle captuing with Mountain Lion and I haven't heard of any reason why the two should be different for FW capture.

Go to the genius bar. You've mucked up your MBP OS and it requires a hands on repair.

I have an iMac with 10.4.11 and a Mac Air 10.6.7. Will the Extreme be compatable with the 10.4.11?

10.4.11  Macs will have Kernel Panics when trying to use Dual Band Airport Extreme Base Station.  There are a few forums here dealing with it.  I just purchased an Airport Extreme Base Station and spent two days now figuring out why the old iMac G5 running 10.4.11 (Tiger) was Kernel Panicing.  There is a way that I am testing now that seems to be working.  I will post the link in a minute when I find it. Other solution is to upgrade to 10.5 .
    Here is the post
Aug 22, 2010 2:09 PM (in response to Acin)
Greetings... I have just found a resolution to this problem, at lease if you're using one of the newer Dual Band Airport Extreme base stations. This fix was provided by an AppleCare representative named Rebecca, and I am deeply in her debt. To review: MY PROBLEM - After installing a new Dual Band Airport Extreme in July 2010, I began to have frequent kernel panics with my older laptops running Tiger (10.4.11). My newer Intel/Leopard MacBook Pro ran fine with the new base station, but these older Power PC Macs with Tiger just crashed again and again. Pulling the Airport Card was the only fix. I tried every conceivable software and network fix; nothing helped. THE SOLUTION - The AppleCare rep talked me through this, but I'm pretty sure this was the procedure. Please note that I cannot guarantee that I have not forgotten a step! But I am fairly sure this is it. (If an Apple specialist is reading, please check this!) Keep in mind, this will only work if you have a dual-band Airport base station. I performed this on a Mac Pro running OS 10.6.4, with Airport Utility version 5.5.1 and firmware 7.5. 1. Launch Airport Utility.
    2. With the dual-band base station selected, click Manual Setup.
    3. Click the Wireless tab.
    4. Click the "Wireless Network Options" button near the bottom.
    5. Check the box that says "5 GHz Network," then enter a new network name in the Name field. (Your existing network name appears there now. Just delete it and type a new one.)
    6. Click Done. That dialogue will close.
    7. Now click Update. The Airport base station will now take about a minute to reboot. Here's what happens when you perform these steps... The utility changes your existing Airport network to 2.5 Ghz, and then creates a new 5 Ghz network with the new name. (It will apply the same password to both.) You will use the 5 Ghz network, the new name, for any new wireless computers using Leopard or newer OS. You will use the 2.5 Ghz network (bearing the original network name) for the older laptops running Tiger. This fix worked immediately, no problems. The issue is that Tiger does not perform well with 5 Ghz networks, and this causes the kernel panics. I now have two old G4 laptops running Tiger, both using my new Airport base station with the 2.5 Ghz network and running perfectly. At the same time, my new machine is using the 5 Ghz network at the same time. It seems quite stable. Good luck, and I hope this info is useful.

Problems with Airport setup after buying Version 7 models, (older ones will not upgrade)
I re set up my Airport network , having had 4 expresses for years doing a good job. I bought another and an express, but then a time capsule after my external drive died. .Problems with Airport setup after buying Version 7 models, (older ones will not upgrade)
I moved house and have fibre network so 38mb/s - they all look ok on the utility, but its not till I saw the App version that they are not compatible as mac will not upgrade the version 6 ones, leaving me with 2 disjointed networks and 7 appliances, 4 of the old , 3 of the new.
my new house is expansive so i wanted the extended range and airplay in each room.
This is not told to customers, and utility doesnt show any issues.
I do not seem to get any range from either network now, - and I'm quite experienced with airport (6 yrs of setting up & using & extending)
    Any advice ?

I'd wait. What can't you do that you need? You mean you want to buy a new model, then why not wait for an actual new one, not the two year old 5,1, when you need to and have outgrown.
Yours will run Mountain Lion. yours is 4 yrs old and still supported and has life left.

  • Updated to maverick and my mac won't open

I just updated my mac with maverick and now it won't open

    Hi Barney,
After startup, the computer stops responding and display's only gray screen with the Apple logo & spinning globe.
I have restarted the computer several times with the same result.
I contacted apple support & they instructed me to restart the computer and hold down certain keys (ctrl, options?, P & R) this brought up a dialouge box and I selected fix OS.
This didn't fix the problem, and the apple help person advised my OS may be corrupted & I need to back up my stuff onto an external hard drive & then they will reinstall the OS.
I am not particularly computer savvy and this 'glitch' in the maverick download has really f*cked me off as I cant work from home until I buy an external hard drive and get it sorted......
    That's is my whinge.....

  • Upgraded to 10.4.9 from Tiger 10.4.5 and now mac won't reboot

    Hello everybody
I bought a mac mini recently "in perfect working order" with lots of installed software and the mac engineer who sold it said it could be upgraded from 10.4.5 to 10.4.9 apple's latest. I did this last night and now it won't reboot! I get a white screen with the little wheel turning and then it switches off and gives up entirely. What can I do?

Thanks all for your help. Yes I was hoping to use a disc for a Power PC mac mini when it's an intel. I got the disc out by holding down the mouse on startup. I contacted the seller and he says my OS has got corrupted and I can get a mac doctor to reinstall it. He never included the original OS10.4.6 when he sold it to me. It was bought as sold - does he even have the original discs one wonders. Anyway I also told him that I had originally plugged in my ipod which said it wanted iTunes updating then when I had done that a message said iTunes wouldn't work unless I updated the OS to 10.4.9. Included when I updated the software was a firmware update. So the OS has become corrupted and must be restored by a Mac authorized repairer. I hope this is possible without losing the applications already installed
Anyway that's what I'll do and thanks everybody for all your great help

  • My newer IPhone gets a weaker cell signal at the same time and place as my wife's older one. Help

My newer IPhone gets a weaker cell phone signal at the same time and place as my wife's older IPhone. Help!

What is the signal the difference?
Follow this guide and record the numbers you see...
    http://lifehacker.com/5929546/see-the-actual-signal-strength-on-your-iphone-with -this-quick-tweak
If the difference is within ~10db there's not much to worry about.
Now if you see -130 and -80 that is an issue. (talk to your carrier)
But if you see -60 and -75, both phones are operating normally.
What are the iPhones in question?
Are you both on the same network? (what network(s) are you on?)
What data connection is available on each phone? (3G/4G/LTE)
Are the iOS and Carrier settings up-to-date?

  • Just installed Mountain Lion, and my Mac won't boot correctly. What should I do?

So I stupidly decided to "upgrade" to Mountain Lion this evening. I downloaded ML, installed it, and now whenever I try to boot my Mac I can't get anywhere. The apple logo comes up and the spinning wheel below it starts up, but then it stops and restarts itself over and over again. I can boot in Safe Mode and I have verified the disk and the permissions (there were no issues.) Any suggestions on how to get it to boot normally? If it helps, I have a 2011 Macbook with 8GBs of RAM. I did have Snow Leopard before I tried upgrading to Mountain Lion.
Also, on a side note, I have my original install DVDs that came with my Macbook... if nothing else works, can I use these to revert back to Snow Leopard? I don't care if I have to clear my entire computer, I have everything I need backed up (and not through Time Machine. I just have the files I want.)

Have you checked that all your apps are compatible with Mountain Lion? Check that the apps are supported > http://www.roaringapps.com If you have apps that aren't supported, start in safe mode and uninstall them. Then, restart and see if Mountain Lion starts properly.
Another thing you can do is to reinstall OS X again. To do it, hold Command and R keys while your computer is starting and reinstall OS X.

Of course. You have to erase the hard drive and install Snow Leopard on your hard disk, but first try to solve the problem with Mountain Lion

I cannot get my friends ipad to sync with anything. It says its disabled and he doesn't know the password from the person he bought it from. He doesn't have a computer and I'm on a mac. I followed the steps given in the manuals section but it still will not work nor will it open in itunes.

There is absolutely nothing that you can do to help. If he cannot contact the previous owner and get him to unlock/erase the device, your friend has a useless brick on his hands. There is no other way of unlocking the iPad.

  • I removed the kernal extensions and now Mac won't boot in safe mode

Hey guys. I did a severly boneheaded thing. In an attempt to see what extensions were necessary I copied them to a folder on my desktop. I then deleted the kernal extensions but did not empty the trash. Upon restart, crunch. I can't seem to get the computer to boot in safe mode. I tried a number of things but none of them have worked. The computer continually crashes into a kernal panic. I am using 10.4 and would like to try and reinstall the OS but I can't even get the computer to boot from the install dvd.
Any help or insight would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks guys.

You need to get into single use mode for steps one and two that are listed below.
This page will tell you how to get into single user mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
Basically, you hold down the command + s key then  powering on your machine. The command key has a little apple symbol on the lower left. It is between the alt/option key and the space bar. On a PC keyboard, it will be the windows key, I think.
You can get into the terminal when you boot off of an install dvd.
Here is an overview of the terminal commands.  Lets assume that your account has a short user name of mac.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
#What is my short user name?  Type the whoami command.
    mac $ whoami

  • Just tried to install the recent updates and now Mac won't boot.

Clicked restart and was presented with a screen that said "none of the software updates could be installed, an unexpexected error occured" I clicked OK, was was left wi a blank screen that did nothing. So I powered down, and restarted, now I'm presented with a UnIx screen indicating "unable to find driver for this platform" and a window instructing me to restart.
Restarting in any mode, shift, command, command s, etc will not move me past the Mac OS version not yet set screen.
This is a mess. I installed Lion over the Internet and do not have a startup disk I can use to recover and reinstall to even restore from my Tme Capsule ... Isn't there a way I can install over the Internet?

Holding down Option seemed to get me into recovery mode, where I was able to run disk first aid, to repair the disk and permissions.
It repaired dozens of permissions, and stated the HD was OK, but restored boot drivers.
However, I still cannot startup, getting the exact same message.
At this point should I restore from my Time Capsule, or should I reinstall Lion and then restore from my Time Capsule?
Or is there any other way to recover at this point?
