2011 Clamshell mode (sleeping too soon)

New MacBook 2011 15", 10.6.7 updated
When In clamshell mode, if I turn the TV to a different input source (or turn it off), the computer goes to sleep right away. My 2008 Macbook will stay on however, allowing me to VNC with iTeleport (until the sleep scheduler kicks in normally).
Is there a setting I am missing to keep it from shutting off right away? I read about resetting SMC, but thought that was extreme for a brand new machine just out of the box.
Thank you.

(All energy saver settings are set to "always on", computer power is plugged in and is connected to bluetooth keyboard and touchpad).
When I VNC during the process, the screen goes blank on the remote VNC device but you can still see the top menu bar. When I switch the TV back to the correct source, the screen comes back and the VNC connection is never lost...

  • Macbook Pro 2011 clamshell mode broken by latest software update?

After installing the latest MacBook Pro software update and EFI update through Software Update in the evening May 4, I am unable to enter clamshell mode any more. It used to work before. After waking up in the clamshell mode, the machine promptly goes back to sleep. On subsequent attempts to wake up the system, the laptop itself appears to wake up (at least the sleep light stops blinking) but the display does not even wake up. I can still work with external dsisplay with the lid open but this is highly annoying. I have reset the PRAM with no effect. The machine is a 2011 MBP, 15" inch, 2.2 GHz quad i7. Keyboard and mouse are wireless Microsoft desktop but the problem is also present with wired peripherals.
Does anyone else see this problem after installing the latest patch?

Okay, I'll add my frustration here as well.
I've had this problem too, and more noticable since the 1.4 update.
I posted a thread similar to this here.
But I'll just copy over what my main problem was...
Whenever I plug my computer into my Cinema Display (with the computer closed) it won't wake up fully. The status light will come on, any external hard drives will spin up, but the display won't turn on and the computer will go back to sleep.
I have to restart the computer manually to get it to work normally, and if I disconnect it while it's between the sleep and wake mode and try to open it, the backlight will come on but the screen will remain black, causing me to have to force restart it.
This is in addition to my first problem with the backlit keyboard not coming on automatically after sleep, which was temporarily fixed by resetting the SMC, but it goes back to the problem after a week or so.
What could be causing either of these problems? Could it have something to do with BootCamp since I have it installed, or is there a defect?
I would bring it back to Apple, but there's a small dent in the front right corner, and I'm afraid they would deny any problem I have.
I took my MacBook Pro (2011, i7 2.2, 17") into the Apple Store on Monday, and after about an hour of attempting to replicate the problem with a different monitor, there was only one time where there was any sort of problem.
The employee told me to see if there will be a fix, or otherwise they will replace the logic board for me.
One thing I'd like to add as a note...
It seems that the problem is more prominent when I have my computer with everything on it as usual. As in, before I took it to the Apple Store I performed a clean install of OS X, and that may be related to how bad the problem is, any opinions?
I had attempted at reinstalling OS X from a Time Machine Backup, but the problems continued shortly after completetion. In addition to this, I clean installed OS X, and manually reloaded my applications and media, hoping that the problem had stemmed from some kind of broken file system that could be repaired by a new install.
But no matter how I do it, the problem comes back despite the method. It is really something I want fixed, as I pretty much only use it in clamshell mode when home...

  • IMac sleeps too soon since Mountain Lion

I have a mid 2011 iMac i5 27'' on which I have installed Mountain Lion.
Everything is working great, except for one thing.
I have my Energy Saver set to the default Sleep of 10 mins of non use. Whenever I was downloading anything under Lion it would always stay awake until the download had finished, even if that was 2 or 3 hours. Since changing to Mountain Lion my iMac sleeps exactly as per Energy Saver settings regardless of the fact that there is network/hard drive activity.
It does this whether downloading to the internal hard drive or an external USB drive.
Is there a setting somewhere which needs tweaking? I have tried checking/unchecking "Wake for Network Access", but that doesn't make any difference.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Stepppy,
I have always used uTorrent on windows for my torrent-downloads. When I got my first Mac 1 month ago, Mac Mini (mid 2011), I was amazed at how Lion handled uTorrent! The Lion slept, while the torrents were downloading. For 2 days I worked like this. When I saw a FREE upgrade possibility for Mountain Lion I did not hesitate and downloaded...... expecting it to be better ofcourse..... I was wrong.
I use the mac solely for downloads and watching movies and shows(hooked up to my Sony LED 46HX820...sweet!).
After some browsing I finally found the caffeinate command to be the best work-around see (h t t p : //apple. stackexchange. com/questions/57951/mountain-lion-sleeps-too-aggressively), that is until the guys at uTorrent update the software, which they promised to do see (h t t p : //forum. utorrent . com / viewtopic . php ? id= 122652)
This is my setup for uTorrent:
My sleep settings for screen and hard disks are set to 1 minute, just because, I don't know, just because!
I open Terminal and use this command everytime I start downloads with uTorrent:
    caffeinate -i open -W -a utorrent.app
(for other apps use that app's name instead of utorrent.app)
This should keep the system awake as long as uTorrent is running and not idle. To prevent any sleep at all, use -s instead of -i.
And I always set my uTorrent to Sleep After Downloads Complete.
I hope this helps you and some others.
Ofcourse, this is not what we want eventually, but I don't find it necessary to go back to Lion for this problem and I just hope the app will get an update!
    Good luck

  • No Mouse Shadow after Standby in Clamshell Mode

    Hi,
I have a 2.6 Ghz MacBook Pro with a 256 MB GeForce 8600 M-GT running the latest Snow Leopard. I have a 24" monitor attached to my laptop and am running it in clamshell mode. As soon as it goes to standby and I wake it up, my mouse shadow is gone.
What can I do? That wasn't happening in Leopard. In order to get it back I have to logout and then login again.
    Thanks

    Hello,
unfortunately this didn't work for me. I deleted both files and it still doesnt work.
Same thing when I am running two displays and unplug the external display. Then my mouse shadow disappears, too.

  • Silverlight (Lovefilm / Netflix) MBP 13" Early 2011, Heating and Exhaust Problems, Clamshell mode with TB Display

    Hi all
I was hoping if someone can help me out...
    I have a:
    Mac Book Pro 13" (Early 2011) (i5, Crucial 8GB RAM, 120 OWC 6G SSD)
    Apple Thunderbolt Display
I run my MBP in clamshell mode always.
Whenever i run Netflix or Lovefilm video in full screen using either Firefox, Chrome or Safari. The Silverlight plug-in is hogging the CPU.
My exhaust (CPU fan) goes crazy, its soo loud its annoying while your trying to watch a movie on your Thunderbolt Display.
    Temperature reaches: 83 Celsius
    Fan (Exhaust): 5620 - 6200 RPM (immediately jumps from 2001 to 5620 / 6200)
If i watch a movie full screen on my 13" MBP with my Thunderbolt display disconnected:
    Temperature reaches:  81 Celsius
Fan (Exhaust): 3198 RPM (it slowly crawls up form 1998 to 3193)
Now i changed my resolution on my Thunderbolt disply to 1420x720 and it helps with the fans going crazy, they slow down slightly...
I've tried a PRAM and SMC Reset, all my firmware is up to date.
My Macbook Pro is slightly raised at the back so air can flow through the vents.
My FANS are just going crazy!! something is ridicously heating up internally in my machine causing them to go mental.
You just cannot watch a movie on netflix or lovefilm on your thunderbolt display comfortably if your fans go beyound 2800RPM.
I even installed Windows 7 on Virtual Box and tried running lovefilm / silverlight and it did not help my problem.
PLEASE CAN SOMEONE HELP! how can i keep my fans below 2800 RPM while running silverlight?!?!

Flash like Silverlight are CPU heavy applications.
The MacBook Pro can be run in clamshell mode but only when not running extremely CPU intensive tasks
    like what you are doing.
If you keep the mac book running this way for too long you might stress the materials and run into danger of getting thermal damages.
Chrome is actually in recent time getting very slow and I noticed in a comparision test that Firefox provides me up to 30 to 40% more free CPU time.
If running netflix I would suggest currently NOT using Chrome.
Windows 7 virtualized inside virtual box and then on top netflix is uhm a pretty bad idea because all those three things together are already CPU hogs.

  • TB display w/MBA 2011 clamshell won't sleep, still glows in dark room

    Subject says it all.
The computer is the latest model 2011 MacBook Air with Thunderbolt.
The display is the latest model 27" Thunderbolt Display.
I use the MBA in clamshell mode.
When I use any of the following methods to put the display to sleep, it darkens, but doesn't shut off the back lighting and I still see the mouse no problem.
    • Hot Corner to force sleep (set via System Preferences)
    • Control + Shift + Eject
    • Waiting 5 minutes of inactivity (set via System Preferences)
I don't think this is right.

Software update finally kicked in and said there was a "Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update".  The update was FAST and now my problems are solved.
    Thanks Apple bugfixing elves! :-

  • Clamshell Mode Prevents Waking from Sleep

I've got a MacBook Pro (Intel, 2.33GHz) running 10.5. Since installing Leopard I've been bumping into periodic issues with trying to wake from sleep while in clamshell mode. (I've got a Samsung LCD monitor and a USB keyboard plugged into it, and most of the time the laptop itself stays closed.) Every now and then--mostly if the laptop has been asleep for a while, say, overnight or all day--it'll refuse to wake up. I've never had one of the kernel panics described in this thread: it just won't wake up, even if I open the laptop, until I unplug the external monitor from the monitor-out socket. Once I unplug the external, the onboard screen comes right on, and I can even re-attach the external monitor and it'll work just fine; but if I close the laptop, I'm back at Square 1 with a comatose computer.
Restarting the machine doesn't help. Tossing the PowerManagement.plist file solves the problem temporarily, but eventually it recurs. Anybody have any insights? Other things I might try? Similar experiences?

Try Ejecting the External HD before sleeping the Mac.
Then see if the Mac Mini will wake and re-mount the External HD.

  • Clamshell mode + battery power = repeated sleep

I've got an odd one. My 2009 MacBook Pro (15") running 10.6.7 sits on a cooling pad plugged into a powered USB hub. I'm using a 21 inch LCD to run in clamshell mode, and it works fine with the lid down or up when it is plugged into the AC power adapter.
But unplugging the adapter causes the Mac to fall asleep about 10 seconds after unplugging. A keystroke or mouse click reawakens it -- for about 10 more seconds, then off to sleep it goes again. This repeats over and over. It seems to happen mostly when the lid to the Mac is closed, when the lid is open, not so much. Is this due to heat or what? Obviously the built in LCD has much different resolution than the external monitor, so I pretty much have to awaken it with the lid closed.

AC power is required when using clamshell mode. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131.

  • External display has no menu bar/dock when waking from sleep in clamshell mode

After Mountian Lion upgrade, external display shows no dock or menu bar when MBP wakes from sleep in clamshell mode.  I have to open and close the lid of the laptop to sort it out.  Any ideas?

MacBook is connected to AC adapter. My MacBook is almost new, I have it for only few months, connector looks clean.
I never had problems with AC adapter but I will try different wall outlet.
It's a shame that I have no other device with display port output so I can not test if the problem is with my display. With dual DVI connected to my desktop computer display works fine... for more than one year now...

  • Display black leaving clamshell mode in sleep

Any way to wake-up / reactivate laptop built-in display without rebooting? My machine is in clamshell mode about 90% of the time-- closed, connected to a display and keyboard. Always works fine when booting in regular, laptop configuration. However, I usually just sleep the machine as I disconnect from the external devices. Later, when I open the machine as a laptop, its built-in display does not always turn-on-- machine is clearly running, will usually go back to sleep if closed, and will usually wake-up correctly if reconnected to external keyboard & monitor in clamshell mode. Other times, nothing seems to establish correct display operation to either laptop's built-in display or to the external one. Luckily, everything is always fine after a forced reboot. I'm looking for some key stroke or something to cause display settings to go back to regular laptop mode. (This may relate to earlier threads "Macbook Display Output problems" & "Macbook and external monitor problem" http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3531667&#3531667 and http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3928012&#3928012)
    Thanks in advance

I am having a similar problem.
For a while, opening the laptop without the power cable would work, but now that solution doesn't work all the time.
I have my MacBook running in clamshell mode with a firewire HD, DVD Burner and iPod dock plugged in. I am also using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse (Apple). I always eject the Firewire drives and unplug ipods. Then I sleep, and undue the USB connector, monitor (DVI) then power.
Frequently, when I open up the MB later, as you described, the display stays off. I can often push the power button followed by the "S" key to sleep it, but waking it up again doesn't restart the display.
In my Console.app log (system.log) I sometimes find this:
    "kernel[0]: display: Not usable"
For whatever that is worth. It is very frustrating because a restart is the only thing that seems to work, and that sometimes causes data-loss as not everything is saved. Arrgh.
Unfortunately, I don't have an answer.

  • Sleep not working with external screen in clamshell mode

I have my macbook with Lion operating in clamshell mode with an external display connected as the main screen.
Although I have set the computer to sleep after 10mins, this never happens and I have to sleep the computer manually every time.
If I disconnect the external display, or open my Mac and work with both screens, the computer does sleep properly after the set time.
I can't seem to find the fix anywhere, and the people in the mac store couldn't help me either.
    Can anyone help please?
    Thx,

How to disable the closed-clamshell mode?
I think, this is what you're looking for ... maybe you want to uproot that question.

Whoever told you that is wrong. The warranty on a repair or replacement iPhone is still 90 days minimum. Quoting from their Service FAQ:
If defects arise as a result of service, Apple will cover the repair for the remaining term of the iPhone's warranty or 90 days after iPhone service, whichever provides longer coverage for you.
Call Apple Support and discuss your problem with them. If they agree that it's a hardware problem, they can arrange for mail-in service.

  • HT3131 Will running the Macbook Pro 2011 in clamshell mode affect heat dissipation at all?

I'm worried about the heat not being able to escape when the laptop is closed.

I have used my new mid-2012 MBP in clamshell mode and monitored the temperatures and they were no different than when the lid was open, so it appears that the cooling system is unaffected. Very little heat dissipates upwards through the keyboard/upper case anyway, the heat is directed through the rear and underside of the case.
