2011 iMac 27 graphics card problem?

After updating to Mavericks I have had some sporatic, multicolored, blocks appearing and flashing on my display.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing it?
<Edited by Host>

Same problem here, mid 2011 27", Radeon 6770, Mavericks, etc.
The problem may be getting worse slowly and mainly appears on medium gray regions windows which have been static for a while, and is particulary strong on the external Dell monitor - typically toward the right sides of the screens. If you move the window, it stops for a while. Checked internal temps, screen saver mode, nearby cellular signal & RF sources (iPad, iPhone), second monitor connected or not.
The pattern of blinking seems to repeat: a period flickering followed by shorter period of very fast flickering, which reminds me of the sound of an audio noise problem I had when a cell phone was near my Mac. So far, the noise problem does not appear when the iPhone (T-Mobile) and iPad (Verizon) are off. The problem appears if I turn on the iPhone, however it does not go away when I turn off the phone, unless I also move or update the afflicted window (iPhoto's gray background is a good example). Only one day of experimentation with this, so it is probably premature to conclude that RF interference is a factor.
This has been going on long enough that I can't associate it with any system changes, however I've had the phone and pod for a while and I don't think it appeared when they did. If it is indeed RF related, then that leaves three possibilites: (1) I changed something, such as an OS level, and didn't associate the problem with it, (2) the RF interference is increasing or, (3) the iMac is becoming increasingly sensitive to the RF interference.
Anybody able to validate this? I'd hate to crack open my iMac and put in a new GPU only to find it wasn't the root cause!

  • IMac with graphical card problems

    HiRegards to all.
My problem is the following one.
I had problems in my iMac, like flickering, ghosting, but the more serious thing that was remaining hung and on the screen there were appearing stripes of colors, duplicated images, in short an iMac of which they went out with the fault in the motherboard of factory . I received it one week ago and now after two attempts to execute the return of the product they say to me (after saying to me that today it would have my iMac made) that it will be ended on September 8, thing that will lengthen my order in one month.
Apple charged me the iMac one month ago, and it turns out that I am going to be two months (if there is luck) without iMac, now I do not have computer in spite of wich works what leads me to losing money since all this hanging work cannot continue forward. The most graceful thing is that since they charged it from me only they were late 3 days in making it, more three weeks in the sending. But in the service post sale now they say to me that the return has priority to the manufactures as buy. If that is more time I do not see that has priority on the buys.
In short I am very disappointed with apple after so many years adoring these perfect machines I have met plunged in the disappointment. If they me cannot solve this this week I will proceed the case before service to the consumer of my country to do the pertinent thing. I leave this message because I need to be advised before this problem, of which I do not have fault, but I am the maxium harmed.
    Regards

If you have ordered an iMac with the 256Mb graphics card then there is going to be a delay. Everyone who is ordering that model is having to wait. I don't know why but can only guess that they either have a shortage of the graphic card from the supplier or they have more orders than they thought they would. I feel certain that Apple would rather be able to build them quicker also, but sometimes things happen that are beyond our control.
At least they were good enough to replace your defective unit. That is something to be thankful for. I really am sorry you have to wait. Maybe the new one will work perfectly though and you won't have any more problems.
By the way I used to live in Barcelona many many years ago. I love the city and the people there and some day I am going to go back and visit. Barcelona is a great place!

  • Upgrade Mid 2011 iMac 27'' Graphics Card?

Hello all, and thanks in advance. I have a mid 2011 iMac 27'' and for work, I do a lot of film and effects editing. I have currently ordered more RAM but my newly updated programs require an Nvidia card with CUDA drivers for rendering. Is it possible to upgrade the graphics card in my mid 2011 iMac to a newer, faster card?

Thanks for the quick response. I understand they are part of the logic board, and it appears that they weren't designed to be easily accessible, but is it even possible? With some risky work, could it be possible to place a new card in? Or is it designed so other cards won't even fit?

  • Is anyone still having discrete graphics card problems after replacement

Is anyone still having discrete graphics card problems after replacement?
Macbook Pro eligible for replacement through Apple program.
Submitted my computer 2 days before program came into effect.
They replaced card or logic board with same original model: AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024 MB
Issued me a refund check for my repair.
Seems to have some noticeable issues, fan running more than usual again, and temporary graphic lines,
but disappear too fast before a screen dump...
Is anyone who has participated in the replacement program received a different graphic card for
Model Macbook Pro 17" (late 2011)
    Thank you for the reply.

Unfortunately I have yet to call AppleCare because I am on a project for 3 weeks and cannot be without my laptop during that period....
Until that time I am trying to figure out what I can do to protect the Palm Rest/Mouse Pad area of my Macbook once they either fix it or give me a new one. Has anyone had any experience with either of these products that can provide some input as to whether they are good or bad?

after a restart it works for a time, but always slow. I went to the Applestore this afternoon and the made a check and said it would be the logicboard and they would have to change it for CHF 600 and it would be ready in 10 - 15 days

  • HP Pavilion G4 1003-TX Graphic Card Problem

Hello... I have HP pavilion G4 1003TX laptop which cureently having graphic card problem. Technician at my place said that's caused by the solder connection on my Radeon graphic card.  He said it can be repaired, but the same problem will happen again soon unless i replaced my graphic card with new one.
In my laptop, i have Radeon and Intel graphic card which i can switch freely. My question is, if i change from my Radeon to my Intel graphic card, is my graphic card problem solved? Is my laptop still will not last long unless i buy new graphic card?
Please help me if you know the answer. Thanks
    This question was solved.

So my laptop will not start after i turned it on. The technician said it because some solder connection on the graphic card so it need to be resoldered. He warn me that the same problem will happen again soon since it's sign that my VGA card will dead. After he resoldered, my laptop can work normally for 3 months. Now, after 3 months, my laptop  can't start again just like before. The technician said it because of solder connection of my VGA card again.
So, since my laptop has Intel and Radeon VGA card that i can switch, is switching my VGA card form Radeon to Intel will solve my Radeon VGA card dead problem? Will my laptop can work normally if i switch my VGA card to Intel?

  • Mail (4.6) in OS10.6.8 shows several photo attachments with discoloration, distortion (jagged lines, splotches of color, etc.). Could it be a graphics card problem?

My mother-in-law's MacBook Pro 13 (m2009) Mail (4.6) with OS 10.6.8 shows several
photo attachments with discoloration, distortion (jagged lines, splotches of color, etc.).
Could it be a graphics card problem?
Or a bad unpacking of attachments over poor WiFi/Internet?
If anyone has an idea, I'd appreciate your help.
    Thanks from Japan!
    Dan

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • HT1553 my laptop screen has gone blank, probably graphic card problem. i want to back it up. please help

my laptop screen has gone blank probably due to graphic card problem.i need to back up my content as i have bought a new mac and do not intend on repairing the old one. please help

    Try a Target disk:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4413
If you are buying a new mac, Apple will do the migration for you, I would let them do it.
If you have an external monitor, I would try to do a data backup before doing anything.
Could also be your drive has already failed, or logic card.  Again I would take it the  Apple store, and have them deal with it since you bought a new Mac, they would do this for free, and the shoulder the responsibility.
    Hoe this helps.

  • IMac G5 Graphic Card Replacement for blue screen problem

When I turn on iMac, I only see blue screen, the apple technician said Need to replace graphic card,  Nvidia Gforce 7600GT 256.
1, can it install in IMac?  Seem like it work for PC?
2,  I had blue screen problem several time,  I think I turn on iMac too long, so it burn out graphic card.
3,  I have 2007 G5 24" screen model,  is any durable and afford graphic card you recommend?
Where to buy for cheaper price?
Do I need to change mother board?
4,  can I replace it by myself?  Any picture or video for graphic card replacement?
    Thank you.

If you look around, you might be able to find someone who will replace just the chip on the graphics card, which is what usually fails. It will take someone highly skilled; they really have to know what they're doing--it's not an ordinary soldering job.
Here's someone who found a non-Apple service to do this, and it proved to be far less expensive than a full logic board replacement. But I think this was in the UK.

  • IMac 27" 2011 with Dead Graphic Card AMD Radeon HD 6970M

    Hello
I'm from Thailand and my iMac 27" mid-2011 model is malfunctioning. I have windows 7 installed and I can use it only on safemode or when I disable the graphic card AMD Radeon HD 6970M. Updating the driver won't help at all.
I talked to the local iservice and he says it will cost me $570 just to replace this card. I find it very expensive.
Now I have learned that there is this replacement program http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5167 for the graphic card issue. I'd like to know if I am part of this. I'm not sure if I'm under any service coverage since it's been after many years of purchase.

You should be covered - usually replacement programs last for 3 years from the latest date of consumer purchase (when apple discontinues the model). This is typical, but by no means concrete as I have nothing to do with Apple or its replacement policies. Your model also meets those specifications. Since the replacement program is stated as wordwide, it should also be applicable in your country.

  • Imac 2008 20" wont start up. Has no chime, no display but the fans are running. Has a suspected graphics card problem. Any help would be appreciated.

After removing the graphics card to have a look at it, due to a suspected graphics problem, my imac 2008 20" wont now start. There is no chime, no display but the fans run, starting off slowly then when turned off by the power button and then turned back on with power button held in, the speed of the fans ramps right up. Any ideas?

  • Mac keeps crashing whenever using Office for Mac (possible graphic card problem)

Mid 2010 15 inch MacBook Pro. Played out perfectly for the first two years. As soon as the warranty expired, things went sideways. Do not know why but whenever I try to use Office 2011 for Mac the entire mac freezes for a millisecond and then crashes. Does this repeatedly whenever I try using Office.

I've done a couple of modifications on it but I dont believe they have affected it to such extent. I believe it might be a defective graphic card but at this point, believing the crash was induced by the usage of Office I have done everything possible short to dismembering the Mac and changing the Graphic Card. I have read somewhere that mid 2010s had problems with graphic cards. If anyone has found a way around the changing of the card, I would be very grateful of their opinion and suggestions.

First, uninstall the software responsible for installing these extensions:
    com.logmein.driver.LogMeInSoundDriver          1.0.0
    com.squirrels.driver.AirParrotSpeakers          1.8
    com.rim.driver.BlackBerryUSBDriverInt          0.0.68
If removing the software and extensions doesn't solve the problem, then you are probably correct about the GPU:
The problem is likely due to the discreet GPU failing. Download gfxCardStatus 2.3 and use it to disable the GPU. This is a temporary workaround until you get your motherboard replaced.

  • Can you add memory to a IMac's graphics card?

I have a 2011 IMac with an AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1GB GDDR5, can I add another 1gb to it?

    Greetings,
I have a 2011 IMac with an AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1GB GDDR5, can I add another 1gb to it?
The memory on the AMD Radeon HD 6970M is integrated into the graphics card.  It cannot be removed / upgraded.
While not directly related, you can upgrade the RAM of your CPU if you like.
    Cheers.

From what I can find out.
14 Jan 2013 - my client was experiencing display artifaces and the graphics card failed the Dell Diags video memory test. The graphic card replaced by Dell Tech.
13 Jun 2013 - my client was again experiencing display artifaces, running Dell Diags reported both hard drive and graphic video memory failed testing. I was concerned that the graphic card had failed again so quickly I worried there may be another defective part was causing the graphic card failure. I figured the most likely cause would be overheating and since the graphics card has an independent heatsink and cooling fan assembly I submitted Dell Warranty Request W03725377 requesting new hard drive, new graphics card, and new graphics card heatsink.
18 July 2013 - my client was again experiencing display problems. He reported:
The laptop has developed the same problem again. Soon as I switched it on over the weekend, the screen split into two and then it froze and then there  were stripes on the screen. I shut it down and switched it on again, hoping this will work but the screen just remained black.
I booted into Dell Diags and shortly after starting the basic test when the test moved from solid blue to the GUI vertical yellow bars appeared. The yellow bars were visible throughout all testing except the LCD test and on the BIOS Screen. The LCD test didn't show the yellow vertical bars but it did show the repeating series of white dots that I have seen before with previous graphics card memory failures. I tried booting into Safe Mode and Safe Mode VGA 640 x 480. All attempts end with a black screen.
I can order and replace the graphics card under warranty but it seems obvious that something is causing the repeated graphic card failures and I want to fix the problem. I've been searching the forums and it seems other people have been experiencing related problems. I've quoted a thread I believe may be relevant
This thread explores a possible combination of LCD Panel Manufacturer and Graphics Card Manufacturer/ Model

I believe I have a similar problem with my Dell M6600 with AMD(ATI) M8900 graphics card. I've used the computer without problems for 1 1/2 years and 3 days ago I noticed the mouse pointer getting corrupted, then the screen flashed and went dark. I've tried system restore without success. When I remove all the ATI software, the computer works with the Generic VGA driver. I spent 2 days trying to reinstall the ATI drivers from both Dell and AMD with no success again. This has been very frustrating as it takes hours to do a system repair check, boot in Safe Mode and remove the ATI software. When the ATI driver/software bundle is installed the computer does not boot correctly and go to a black screen after the Windows boot up logo. As soon as I remove all the ATI drivers and software the computer boots again and works with the Generic VGA driver. I don't want to erase my hard drives (RAID 1) just to try to fix this. I will buy another laptop hard drive and try a clean Windows 7 Pro install. My guess is that either the graphic card is going bad or ATI drivers are not compatible with the latest Windows Update. Did you have any luck fixing your problem?

  • Graphics card problems in bootcamp

I have the cheapest latest macbook AKA (2.0ghz white with 1gb of ram and only a CD Rw/DVD drive) my problem is that when i'm in bootcamp my Intel gma 950 graphics card supposedly has 224 mb of ram (according to system in control panel and Ea's hardware checker) but i haven't been able to get any games requiring more then 64mb of Ram to work on it, and according to my macbook box it is only a 64mb graphics card, so which one is it? 64 or 224? And if it is restricted to 64mb can i unrestrict it without any major issues?

The other thing to consider is how extensive do you wish to get into gaming, on your computer. If you casually play games like "The Sims" or "Starcraft" on weekends/down time then the shared graphics processor is going to be more than adequate. Likewise, I'm even finding that with World of Warcraft, my Macbook can easily handle "hardcore content" on a nightly basis without flinching.
However, a game like C & C III, Guitar Hero III, Battlefield 2142 and others don't play well with the Macbook. For same gamers, they have to be the biggest, fastest, bestest (yes I know it's wrong) machine and graphics processor out there. They want to see the sweet drip off of their enemy's brow from 100-yards away, and the Macbook's hardware isn't designed for that. That's why Apple has the Macbook Pro, iMac and Mac Pro! Those machines can handle that and then some.
When shopping for computer games, blindly walking into a store and buying one off the shelf is not advised, even if it says "works with OS X 10.4.x." Understand what the minimum system requirements are, OS requirements, processor, RAM, even HD storage requirements. Heck, I even go so far as to visit game developers' websites now and see what exactly the game is verified to run on (in terms of processor, graphics card, and RAM).
