2011 IMAC has only 4Gig memory..new OS is eating it up....what do I do?
Before spending big bucks or 20% of new purchase on new IMAC...how high should I uopgrade memory to?
What 20 percent?
I've bought all my Mac RAM from one place for over a decade and they have a kit to add 4GB RAM to your model for about US$60:
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/1333DDR3S04S/
That kit will give you a total of 8GB RAM, which should be adequate for most tasks outside of pro video and audio apps. Installation takes about 10-15 minutes and is an easy DIY project.
Also remember that OSX has better memory management than many people give credit. Often, what comes across as a RAM issue turns out to be system confusion due to the installing of system-modifying hacks, anti-virus software, or those awful "I'll clean up your Mac for you" programs. I hope you have not trod that path!

Itunes on new iMac has only two albums
my new iMac has only the two most recent acquisitions, one of which is the U2 album. I had the same problem with new iPhone 6 back in october but can't remember how i fixed it. Same with iBooks, which shows two old purchases, but none of the recent downloads.

Did you copy you entire /Music/iTUnes/ folder from you old computer to /Music/ on your new computer?

My mid 2011 27" iMac has 8GB of RAM installed. Photoshop CS5 > Preferences > Performance > Memory Usage tells me that I have 2100MB (ie 2.1GB) of Available RAM - which is ridiculous. When I use DiskWarrior to defragment Time Machine it tells me that "The directory of the disk "Time Machine" cannot be rebuilt. There is not enough memory".
The same setup but with my old 24" plastic bodied iMac with the max of 3GB of RAM has no trouble at all with Disk Warrior and Photoshop CS5 tells me there is 2866MB of Available RAM. Something is not quite right.
Can anyone advise me as to what the problem might be. Do I have faulty RAM modules?Quote from: Jack on 28-August-11, 01:11:56
What is your current UEFI/BIOS Version?
The usual cause of such problems is (apart from bad memory slots or a defect of the processor's memory controller) a contact problem between the boards CPU Socket contact pins and the CPU's contact pads. Broke or bent pins are one explanation, in other instances a heatsink that is fastened to tight can also cause such issues.
I'll have the BIOS version up in a moment, but I'll see about diagnosing if one of those problems might just be what is my problem. Any tips on doing that?
Also, BIOS version is up in the OP now. -
New imac has only one firewire 800 port?
Is there a hub or repeater you can use instead of daisy chaining. Can't figure out why my old imac has two firewire ports and the new imac has one. How are others managing multiple hard drives? I wish to use a hub for my firewire connections. What is the best way. thanks
You can locate Firewire hubs however they are expensive. I have had 3 Firewire 800 external HD's daisy chained together for 3 years that work flawlessly. The drives I have come with 2 FW 800 ports so this is quite easy, there are several top quality external HD's that are similar including:
OWC Mercury Pro line
Lacie Quadra D2 line (this is what i have)
G-Tech G series line
All of these drives have similar specifications and are all high quality products. I think you will find them to be the most recommended on these forums.
BTW your old iMac had 1 Firewire port and 1 Firewire 800 port not 2 firewire ports.

my iMac has crashed...was told I need a new hard drive.....meantime I bought a mac mini.....I had an external drive connected to the mac....and was using time machine for backups....so....how do i move itunes music files to my new mac mini from the external drive?
Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source volume. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the access list. Give yourself read access if you don't already have it. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane. -
My iMac has only 3 usb ports, but I need four.
My external hard drive (Timemachine), my keyboard, my power supply backup (APC UPS), and my usb hub are all supposed to be connected directly to the iMac. How do I do this (short of getting a wireless keyboard)?
steve359: I've got external powered hub with adequate space. Problem is that Apple recommends that Timemachine and keyboard both be directly plugged into iMac. APC recommends that UPS be directly plugged into iMac. That leaves everything else which goes through the hub. I need to get a new external HD (my Iomega died). If anyone knows of a good external HD that allows connection by usb and has an auxilliary usb port so my hub can go through that, it might work. The Iomega used firewire so it didn't compete for iMac usb ports, but I'd prefer to have a usb HD.
seventy one: Rechecked. My iMac has 3 usb ports and two firewire. -
Using 2011 iMac as external display for new Retina macbook / port sharing question
I'd like to see if there is a way to use the firewire port on the back my 2011 iMac 27" when it's connected to my 2014 15" Retina Macbook.
The two work fine right now - the iMac is the main display for the macbook, but I wanted to know if there is a way to utilize the extra ports - namely the firewire port on the iMac through the Macbook. I've created aggregate devices before - would this be the way to go?
Thanks!Hello gstern1994,
Yes you can. Form the article below you should be able to do that, just make sure that you plug in those devices when you have already set up the Target Display Mode on the iMac.

I have a new iMac14 with Yosemite. Every morning I now find a message saying my iMac has been restarted due to a "Sleep Wake Failure" problem and that a problem report has been generated. How do I fix this or even figure out what is wrong?
The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies. -
My FaceTime on my iMac has stopped working but it still works on my ipad whats wrong
My facetime on my imac has suddenly stopped working and will not accept my password, it still works on my ipad what is wrong
Either the physical drive or the enclosure electronics has failed. The light you are seeing is powered by the USB connection, the power, electricity, all USB ports put out. That doesn't mean the actual physical hard drive or the USB to SATA bus electronics are working properly. If it doesn't show in Disk Utility then it is DEAD.
Most of the time it is the enclosures electronics that fail. Removing the physical drive from the enclosure and put it in another enclosure or using a SATA to USB adapter, one that has it's own AC power supply, might allow you to get the files off the drive. -
IMac has only half the screen working/illuminated.
Is this a problem with the backlight?
Is it expensive to fix?
No Applecare.Take the machine to your local Apple Store or AASP they can quote you how much it will cost to repair.

Brightness/Flickering problem with left hand side of 2011 iMac display
Hi,
My 2011 iMac has recently developed a fault with the left hand side of the display flickering and being very dark. I've googled this and found that many other people seem to have this issue. As per other forum posts, if I apply a little pressure to the bottom left of the screen then this temporarily resolves itself, but this is obviously not a permanent solution.
I'm not happy as my £1500 iMac is only 18 months old, and I've been told from an authorised apple repair centre, that it's going to cost £600 to fix.
I've spent the best part of an hour trying to call apple to speak to a human being, but the automated voice menu wants to charge me £35 before even putting me through. Does anyone have a phone number which would allow me to speak to a real person so I can make a complaint?
Paul.Sounds like it will be an international call (and sounds like you have all the local numbers), but you might try calling Cupertino and then ask for customer support

Unless there were some repair program for this issue, if it's out of warranty, I doubt you'll get very far with it. -
Clean installed iMac has kernel panic's
Hi,
I have a 2011 iMac with 16GB Kingston Memory installed. I have no USB devices connected. Only a keyboard and a ethernet cable. I keep on having kernel panic's with this iMac. An employee at a Apple Premium Reseller shop adviced me to do a clean install. I did this, but now i'm having this kernel panic again. I have not installed any suspicous software, just standard stuff like Adobe, Askype, Chorme, iWork … and so on.
Can anyone read a kernel panic file and determine what the problem might be?
Thanks in advance,
Hannes

Use older 2008 iMac as second monitor for new iMac
Hi all,
I have one of these older machines that has no real purpose
http://support.apple.com/kb/sp485
but would serve me very well as a second monitor for my brand spanking new iMac.
The specs seem to note that there is a video output - but I'm not seeing anything about video IN.
Is it possible to use this older iMac as a monitor?that looks cool, and there is a free trial.
I am not keen on using the WiFi to do this - my old iMac has firewire but the new one doesn't.
Besides using the ludicrously expensive Thunderbolt <-> Firewire 800 convertor
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MD464ZM/A/thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapter
is there any other way to create a wired connection between these devices? I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a USB <-> USB network connection. -

Where are RAW files kept in iPhoto?
I just recovered a bunch of photos from an SD card I accidentally erased. (Eh, they were just my 17-month year old's first Christmas Eve with Santa, no big deal, right?) Thankfully, I was able to recover them using a utility called CardRaider. (Wort

How can I get rid of the bizzclick virus?
When I look for something on Google, a whole list of sites comes up, but when I click on a site, I'm redirected to another site instead. I understand that this is called bizz click redirect virus and it happens mostly when using Mozilla.
