2011 iMac Optical Drive Disconnecting in Windows 8

I recently installed a copy of Windows 8 using the 14 March 2013 version of Bootcamp. Everything installed correctly, at least to the best of my knowledge. However, after two boots without any issues, my optical drive stopped reading disks. Power still goes to it, and It works perfectly in OSX. In Windows, however, it has ceased reading and ejecting any CD/DVD that I attempt to play, forcing me to restart into OSX to eject the disk. I went into Device Manager, and the driver appears to be intact, but shows the error:
Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)
To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.
Obviously this is not a Hardware issue, as I retain full functionality in OSX, and the Optical Drive was working the first two boots. I am at a loss how to proceed from here, though. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So I managed to at least making it work properly. by installing the power management driver- dependency package - lenovo settings win8 store app.... now my question is: I would like to keep this functionality of turning my optical drive on and off... but i dont really need all that software around.. which of these 3 can i uninstall and keep this functionality?

  • Replaced my iMac optical drive with ssd  - now I can't create a bootcamp partition

I have a late 2009 imac 27". Recently my imac hard drive crashed so I used this opportunity to replace the broken hard drive and also replacethe iMac optical drive with a SSD drive. The idea was to use the ssd drive as my bootcamp partition and boost things up. WRONG IDEA!
I wasted already 5 hours trying to get bootcamp to install windows 7 onto the ssd using an external optical drive, a USB drive, an internal partition of my new hard drive. I used rEFIt to try and boot from these fine devices - nothing! Once the OS restarts to install Windows 7 it gets stuck either in blank screen or with a message that it requires a bootable device.
This is one of the most puzzling situation I've seen. Any help will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Amir

This is the same problem people have with their MacBook Pro. Some people have had success using rEFIT, but many didn't. The only solution that I found was just installing my opitcal drive back in and installing windows on what ever hardrive you need. Then taking the optical drive back out. I know that sounds like a lot of work, but once your done you will be relieved.

  • Mid 2011 imac hard drive replacement

I have a mid 2011 IMac with broken 500GB hard drive. Due to Apple firmware built into the hard drive to test the temp. reading, I must use Apple brand hard drive unless  I purchase OWC's temp sensor and use OEM hard drives on the market. I rather use Apple brand and  can easily get one on EBay. Can I use an Apple brand hard drive specifically made for 2013 IMacs  on  2011 IMac?   I assume they both have same type temp. sensors and Apple firmware built in. Latter is also better as it supports SATA 3 standard with 6GB transfer rates.
Mid 2011 IMac hard drive model:
    Seagate 655-1565D SATA 2
    2013 IMac hard drive model:
    Western Digital 655-1830A SATA 3

Mine came with this one, but I don't think you'll get one with the appropriate temp sensor from anyone other than Apple or an Apple approved service station.

  • Need Optical Drive To Install Windows 7 With Lion?

The latest support article regarding Boot Camp 4.0 states that only Windows 7 can be used for new installs using OS X Lion. Further on, the article states a "compatible external optical drive" must also be used. They don't mention exactly what compatible means or the general requirements of the optical drive. I was thinking of purchasing a new Mac Mini but I would also need to have something more for Windows 7 to run. Who could I ask about this "compatible external optical drive"?

Windows on Mac is never going to be 100%, close, and for many, the hardware today 2011 is powerful enough to use VirtualBox and whatever guest OS.

  • Networking iMac w/ a Netbook to use the iMac optical drive

I have a new iMac and a new Netbook. The Netbook is running Windows XP, Home, SP3.
Netbooks do not come with optical drives.
I am trying to determine if it is even possible to network the two in such a way that I could access the iMac's optical drive from the Netbook in order to install software from a CD onto the Netbook.
Am I just wasting my time here or is this possible???
    Anyone know?

Boot into your BIOS and see what options there are. Some can be configured to use USB CDs, USB flash drives, I have one board (not Netbook obviously) with bootable eSATA.
And check out online forum for your machine. Took me a while to find TweakTown and others that had forum for my board.

  • Using osx snow leopard with boot camp, optical drive keeps ejecting windows 7 disc

Upgraded my late 2008 macbook pro from leopard to snow leopard.  Added the max 4GB of RAM and replaced the working 250GB hard drive with a new 1TB hard drive.  Rebooted with time machine from external hard drive.  Now tried setting up Bootcamp to add a Windows 7 partition, but the optical drive keeps ejecting the Windows 7 disc after it spins for a few moments.  The optical drive will read other discs, just not the Windows 7 disc.  How do I fix this problem?

you need to install the new bootcamp drivers from windows. boot into windows, insert the snow leopard DVD, open it and follow the instructions.

  • MacMini Lack of Optical Drive To Install Windows 8

  • Can I Use My iMac Optical Drive In Place Of Macbook Drive?

So I have a Macbook (late 2008 model), and the optical drive essentially went bye bye. If I put a disc in, it will have trouble recognizing it and then it will eject out. Anyways, last night, I did some maintenance on OnyX and it said that my volume needs to be repaired. Even Disc Utility failed to finish and said that the "filesystem verify or repair failed."
The short of it, I need to put the Leopard disc in there and do a disc repair. However, is there a way, via firewire, where I could actually use my iMac's optical disc drive in place of the Macbook and connect via firewire, then do the disc repair? If so, what would be the specific way to do this?
Your help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Connect the two with a Firewire cable. Boot the MB into Target Disk Mode. It's drive should mount on your iMac's Desktop. You can then run Disk Utility and try repairing the drive in the MB.
You don't need to use the iMac's optical drive unless you have to install OS X onto the MB.

  • 27" iMac Optical drive speeds

I am on my third 27" iMac in the span of seven days. First one had a dead FireWire port so I couldn't move my data from my 24" iMac. The second one had an optical drive that seemed painfully slow.
Transferring student projects from DVDs and CDs to my hard drive seemed to take far too long. Below are some samples:
    256 mb took 7 minutes
    482 mb took 11 minutes
    117 mb took 2 minutes
    267 mb took 6 minutes
I could put the same disc in my seven year old PowerBook and the files would generally copy in about half the time and that's on battery power too.
I took the iMac back and got another one. I am not sure about this one either!
    An example:
187 mb took 4 minutes. I restarted, and tried the same disc and it took two minutes. Something strange is going on. Do these speeds seem slow or am I all wet?
What kind of performance is everyone else getting?

It makes sense that the optical drive would be more efficient on a newer machine, but keep in mind also the little things: Did you run any other applications in the background during the transfer or use the computer while it was going on? Things like that that may not seem to matter actually can slow down the machine a significant amount.

  • IMac optical drive keeps rejecting discs! Help?

I know after browsing the depths of Google for solutions that this appears to be a common problem, but I figured I would ask the question once more anyway as I didn't really find exactly what I was looking for in other forum posts.
My iMac is now three years old (a late 2009 model) with Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.33GHz processor, currently running Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8. I have never previously experienced any problems with the optical drive reading disks, but I have been attempting to re-install Adobe CS4 on a few occasions now and each time I insert an installation disk, it whirs horribly for around 10 seconds before ejecting and doing absolutely nothing.
I have tried using a generic disk cleaner multiple times, but it doesn't appear to do anything at all.
Does anyone know why this would keep happening, and really what I should do next?!
I'm still covered by my AppleCare plan until 16/11/2012 so I literally have just over a week's worth of cover remaining. Is it worth me just taking the bloody thing into an Apple store and seeing what they can do?
    -LJ

Do other disks show the same issue? If it's just the CS4 installer, the problem is with that disk. Be sure to use the same type of disk (DVD presumably) for your test.
If so, yes, a trip to an Apple store or service provider is in order. Be sure to make a reservation before you go or you may spend a long time waiting to speak to a Mac genius.
    Best of luck.

  • New iMac ~ optical drive really heats dvd media - normal?

Brand new iMac and DVDs come out of the drive very hot. Is this "normal" for an iMac? If this is normal, as in not indicating a potential hardware issue, then wouldn't this kind of heat at minimum degrade my media, if not immediately, then over time?
I am not finding many complaints about this via Google, so am wondering whether it is specific to my machine as opposed to the model itself. I am very concerned as years ago I bought an iMac which got downright smokey. Fortunately, Apple Store let me switch it out to another model as I had owned it less than two months. I thought Apple had resolved internal heat issues in the iMac. Don't want to go to a "too-hot" internal temp issue again; can't count on being saved by a machine switch later. If heating of dvd media is not known to be problematic of current Intel iMacs, am thinking I should try to get an exchange before short return period expires.
If this isn't correct forum for my question, please let me know and I'll repost. Thanks.

FWIW, to close out my query, the question has not been explicitly answered, but close enough. I returned the iMac to local Apple Store, well within the 14-day return period. I didn't want an exchange; I wanted a flat return and refund. After taking the iMac off to check for problems on the optical drive (which would determine whether I would have to pay the 10% open-box fee), the salesclerk soon returned to say I would not have to pay the fee. They also refunded the cost of the add-on ram I had them install at purchase (which he noted they don't usually do). A good-will gesture, I suppose. Works for me! Relieved to be getting a full refund, I didn't ask what they did or did not find wrong. While I haven't had success with either of my iMac buys, I can say the local Apple Store always does right by me.

  • G5 iMac Optical Drive Error Messages

I'm afraid my optical drive has probably gone bad. I can burn about every third or fourth time on a variety of media. I get the following error messages in
    Toast:
    *The driver reported an error:*
    *Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR*
    *Sense CODE - 0x73, 0x03*
*Lead-in or Lead-out failed to be written.*
And, the following messages in iTunes:
*The attempt to burn disc failed. An internal error occurred.*
*The attempt to burn disc failed. The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.*
Anyone have any clues as to how this may be remedied, short of a call to Applecare?
    Thanks.

Ummm, you could start by posting in one of the iMac hardware forums - this area is for Mail problems.
    Hope someone there can help.

  • 2011 imac fusion drive

Can i add a fusion drive to my 21.5inch mid 2011 imac? it has the i5 processor.

Not officially, no. A Fusion drive from Apple is really just software that "bridges" together a mechanical hard drive and an SSD, so there are ways to create your own documented on the web. It won't be supported by Apple, though, so if problems arise, you may have to reformat the drives back to separate volumes. You'll also have to figure out how to squeeze in an SSD in addition to the hard drive your iMac has. For tips see this for starters:
