2011 imac vs 2015 mac mini

Hi,
I currently have low-end 2011 imac 21.5" and was thinking about getting cheapest 2015 mac mini and larger monitor to upgrade the screen without spending too much. But when I compared the specs. my imac says 2.5 Core i5 QuadCore, 8GB memory, AMD Radeon HD 6750M 512MB and 2015 mini says 1.4 dual core i5 4GB Memory, Intel Graphics 5000. I'm not good with computers so wasn't sure if this is downgrading in performance or not; the numbers seemed like it but I have no idea. So could you please help me comparing these two in terms of performance upgrade?
Thank you

It would be a little much of a downgrade but it all depends what you will be doing with the Mac.
In any event, 4 GB of memory really is not enough and the memory on the 2014 Mac Mini s not upgrade.
Mac computers are categorized when they were introduced by Apple, not when they are sold. The current Mac Mini is still the late 2104 Mac Mini

  • What is the biggest bottleneck on this machine - CPU, GPU, RAM (now at 8GB), or the HD, and would I be better getting a current 27" iMac, a 2012 Mac Mini, or SSDs for my current Mini?

I currently have a 2011 Mac Mini Server. When using FCP X, what is the biggest bottleneck on this machine - CPU, GPU, RAM (now at 8GB), or the HD, and would I be better getting a current 27" iMac, a 2012 Mac Mini, or SSDs for my current Mini?
    Thanks people,

    Hi Tom,
I just wanted to ask you about what you said about the color correction. To be quite honest I'm not sure what the best workflow is, and I haven't gotten my feet wet in multi-cam editing. Basically my work-flow has been.
    1) Import from the camera as optimized media - I found that adding color-correction at the import stage cause a severe hang with my tape-based Canon unit.
    2) Color-correct the imported files before loading any files into a project
    3) Drag files onto the timeline
    4) Click on the color-correction box
    5) Start editing - Usually I have one camera zoomed a little tighter on the singer, one on the whole band, and my iPad or iPhone camera at different angles so I start cutting things according to who is the focus of the moment, add a Ken Burns effect every here and there, Titles, an occassional transition effect.
    6) Add music effects after the looks are taken care of
    7) Export
Are you recommending clicking on the color-correction box after everything is done?
    Thanks - TZ

  • How can I move my itunes movies from my iMac to my mac mini which is serving as a media server attached to HDTV?

I want to move my itunes movies from my iMac to my Mac Mini, which is hooked up to my HDTV, so that I can save space on the iMac and use the direct source Mac Mini to view the iTunes movies that I purchase and download.  Can anyone give me ideas on how to do that?

iTunes does not have provision for automatically storing one kind of media on a separate drive, so you have some basic decisions to make first.  Do you want these movies to still appear in your iTunes library, or are you content with browsing filenames on a drive in Finder when you want to look for one?  The second's the easiest thing because then you don't have to have an external drive permanently turned on and attached to your computer (wired or wireless).  To do that you literelly only need to drag your movies folder to an archive drive and delete movies from iTunes.  To watch them again you can add it back to iTunes while holding down the option key so the movie is used from its location on the external drive.
There's ways to move the movies to an external drive while keeping them in iTunes but the external drive iwll always have to be turned on and connected to the computer or you will see a bunch of broken link exclamation marks.
Realize what you are talking about is not "backup".  Backup (which you should do) is putting a second or more copy of items on external drives for the day when your internal drive fails and everything on it is lost, inclduing all your home photos and perhaps things that have been pulled from the iTunes Store and can no longer be re-downloaded.

  • Can i connect my iMac to a mac mini (wirelessly) and control the mac mini display on my TV?

Can i connect my iMac to a mac mini (wirelessly) and control the mac mini display on my TV?

Look up "screen sharing" in help
You can control your mini (which I am assuming you are hooking to your TV) complete from your iMac.
After you set up screen sharing, you can go to the finder, under the "go" menu choose "Connect to server" and then browse.  Choose your mac mini's name, and look for the "Screen Sharing" button.
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, and then click Sharing.
    Select the Screen Sharing checkbox.
To specify who can share your screen, select one of the following:
    All users:
Select this if you want to allow any user with a user account on your computer to share your screen.
    Only these users:
Select this if you want to restrict screen sharing to specific users.Click Add at the bottom of the Users list and select a user from Users & Groups (accounts you have set up in Users & Groups preferences), Network Users (users on your network), or your Address Book. Or click New Person and enter a name and password to create a sharing account. Then select that user from the list, and then click Select.
Click Computer Settings and set the following options:
Anyone may request permission to control screen:
Select this to allow anyone on your network to request to share your screen.
VNC viewers may control screen with password:
Select this and enter a password that VNC viewer applications can enter in order to control your screen. It’s recommended that you not set a password if you only share this computer’s screen using the built-in screen sharing viewer in Mac OS X.

  • Purchase Help: iMac 2011 vs Thunderbolt Display   Mac Mini 2011

    Hello,
I purchased Thunderbolt display with Mac mini 2011. I experienced a lot of graphic issues with Mac mini when I connected to Thunderbolt display. I exchanged Mac mini 3 times but the same result. The Thunderbolt display is working fine with MacBook Pro 2011.
I'm going to return both Thunderbolt display and Mac mini and interested to get iMac. Is there any differences between iMac and Thunderbolt display + Mac mini 2011? i.e., in technology, release update cycle, features etc? My main intention to buy Thunderbolt display is to use with both Mini and MacBook Pro.
Any further help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I don't know why you are surprised at the similar sizes of the 27-inch iMac, the 27-inch Cinema Display, and the 27-inch Thunderbolt display.  The 27-inch iMac came first, and the others are "monitor-only" products that seem to use the same LCD panel(s).
As to a current 27-inch iMac vs. a current 27-inch Thunderbolt display,
    * The iMac serves as a standalone computer, and can also serve as a dumb monitor for an external computer that has a Thunderbolt port.  When operating as a dumb monitor, the iMac only serves as a monitor; it does not offer breakout connections to USB 2.0, Firewire 800, or Gigabit Ethernet.
    * The Thunderbolt display is a dumb monitor for an external computer that has a Thunderbolt port.  It also serves as a breakout box for USB 2.0, Firewire, 800, and Gigabit Ethernet connections (which is convenient if your main machine is a laptop; you can do all of your docking with one Thunderbolt cable + one power cable).

  • Slow 2015 mac mini

    Hi all,
Got a mac mini that I've had about 3 months. I was brought to replace the 2007 imac I had.
I installed the mini by restoring the old time machine back up.
I don't use it for much power hungry stuff (web, email, excel etc) but not all at the same time.
It just feels slow and I fell like I see the rainbow circle thing all the time.
I am just wondering if I've installed some crap from the old imac that I don't need.
    I attach the etre report.
Thanks in advance for any help.

You have traces of MacKeeper on your system. Remove those.
You only have 4GB of RAM, and that is clearly not enough for you, as you only had 69MB of free RAM at the time of the report. Upgrade to at least 8GB. Visit http://macsales.com or http://crucial.com. They are not the only two RAM vendors, but are the ones most commonly recommended here.

  • New iMac or new Mac Mini... and iPhoto Library separate drive?

I have a 2007 iMac Intel Core Duo 2.4Ghz (4 meg RAM) with a hard drive in need of repair, according to Disk Utility (and repeated by DriveGenius 3.)  The Repair option is not available.  I have had occasional difficulty with this particular Mac, and this is actually my second hard drive, and it is out of warranty.  I had already planned to replace this computer later this year.
In attempting to download and install Lion OS, the install failed, and the computer became essentially inoperable.  I was able to use Time Machine to get it back running, but cannot repair what is surely a damaged HD.  Apple Support came to the same conclusion.
I have become interested in a few goals:  (1) To purchase a Mac Mini along with an Apple Thunderbolt monitor (when available) in order to separate my CPU from my monitor.  (2) I want to separate my media files from a CPU hard drive for safety, for the very problem I am experiencing now.  (3) I want to make my iPhoto library and iMovie library available to my wife – perhaps on an external dedicated drive - for her newer iMac, to various iPhones and iPads, and to two Apple TV units.
We have a home network with an Airport Extreme, and several Ethernet outlets.  Both iMac’s currently use Western Digital external drives for Time Machine backups.  I have another external Seagate drove solely for my iMovie files.  I just purchased a Time Capsule 2TB (but have not yet opened) with the idea that this would be where the “shared” iPhoto library resides.
    My questions –
Would you recommend using a Mac Mini + monitor, or go with a new iMac (my current iMac is my third and the only one that has given me some problems.)  I do not have any specialized use of my computer beyond the common iLife applications.
I want my photos and videos to be easily available to my family on their Apple devices (I’m the only one with the significant family photo library) and I haven’t quite devised a plan to accomplish that.  Can you make suggestions?
Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Currently the Library is on EHD 1 and you want to copy it to EHD2?
Connect them both to the iMac. Make sure EHD2 formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  and drag the iPhoto Library from EHD 1 to EHD 2
To open either Library with iPhoto 11: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
It will update the Library to the new formats. Remember once you do this the older versions of iPhoto will no longer be able to read it.
    Regards

  • Can I connect  my iMac to my mac mini??

I have the new 27 inch imac with thunderbolt, and I want to connect it to my new mac mini in my media closet. I was windering if there is a way to do this. The purpose of my mac mini is strictly as a media server, and all of my work and media are done on my imac and stored on external storage devices in my media closet. I want to be able to share my media and applications directly with the mac mini. The only monitor I have for the mac mini is the iMac itself. Can I not run the mac mini on the iMac??

you should be able to use the iMac's screen (27" model) with another computer, using DisplayPort.
I'm not sure what you mean by "sharing applications", that's not usually possible.

  • Can't connect iMac/Leopard with Mac Mini/Tiger and vice versa

This one has got me tearing my hair out.
I have an Intel iMac running Leopard and a Mac Mini running Tiger on the same Ethernet network. Both run (adjacent) fixed IP addresses with common subnet mask and gateway. Both access the Internet fine through a single router. But can I share files between the two?
Neither has firewall turned on while file sharing is enabled. I can see each Mac from the other but when I try connecting first I get 'The server may not exist or is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again.' Then on clicking OK I get 'This file server is running on your machine. Please access the volumes and files locally.'
If I try connecting from Finder using Go - Connect To Server I get this error message 'The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "afp://MacMininame" could not be read or written.'
Although I'm running Leopard on the iMac now, this also used to happen when I ran Tiger too.
    Many thanks - GeoffT.

    Fixed it!
I have Parallels installed on the iMac and it creates two virtual network adapters (Guest-Host and NAT) in System Preferences/Network. For some reason I'd foolishly contrived to manually configure the Nat adapter to the same IP address as the Mac Mini, hence the point-back to the iMac every time.
Guess we're all allowed the occasional foul up.....
    GeoffT.

  • 2006 Intel iMac with new Mac Mini?

I have a 2006 Intel iMac (MA200X/A) running Snow Leopard. It's finally gotten to the stage that it's running too slow to work on, so I was looking at the Mac Minis. Is it possible to use my iMac as a display for the Mac Mini?
The iMac only has mini-DVI so I was looking at the cables available and there's mini-DVI to either VGA or DVI, and then HDMI to VGA or DVI, would using the matching cables for each of those work?
(I can't really afford to spend at least twice as much buying a whole new iMac...)

No. The mini DVI port on the iMac doesn't support video in.

  • IMac 2012 or Mac Mini

I'm hoping in 2013 to update my early 2009 24inch iMac (2.66Ghz Intel Core 2 duo - 4Gb Ram - 640Mb h/drive). My present iMac seems slow at times, particularly when I have to amend large psd files (about 300-400 Mb) so I want something that will speed things up. I am sure the new iMac would - I’m unsure about the Mac Mini. I mainly use Adobe InDesign / illustrator / Acrobat / Photoshop. I don't do gaming.
The obvious replacement is the new iMac - 27”, 2.9Ghz, Quad Core Intel core i5 / 1Tb drive or fusion drive / 8Gb ram). I would BTO and have 16Gb ram. I can't afford the more expensive iMacs.
However, I am wondering if the 2.6Ghz Mac Mini (Quad Core Intel core i7 / 1Tb drive or fusion drive) maxed out to 16Gb ram would be an alternative as although I may have to get a display it would then be cheaper in the long run to upgrade it. From some benchmark figures I looked at it seems that the Mac Mini outperforms the iMac although I have read criticisms  of the graphics card. Although if the graphics card is better or equal to what I have now I don't see a problem.
Also, about the display. If I go for the Mac Mini I was thinking of the latest Apple Thunderbolt Display. I know its pricey but I would hope the old adage of 'you get what you pay for' would be true and it would see me through various Mac Mini upgrades. However, I was wondering - is it possible to buy a Mac Mini and use my current iMac as a Monitor for it. If so, how would that work - would I just see 2 hard drives on the screen? If the answer to this is yes then my wife has a Mac Mini (2010) which I could connect and try out first. Also, a few months ago I suffered a kernel panic - only happened once, not happened since - presumably that would be the computer not the monitor part of the iMac so shouldn't be a problem re connecting Mac Mini?
So any advice on any of the above would be welcome.

    Hello Christopher,
Thank you for the star;  glad I was able to contribute.
Interested in your comment I took a peep at Geekbench and going through the section marked  Max Benchmarks 2012  I agree it implies the Mini is the faster.
But it depends what you are comparing it against.  Did you notice that on the list there is another 27" sitting 7 places higher and scoring 12,857?   Moreover, the amount of RAM recommended by Apple is lower than some people are given to putting in their machines.   That too could make a difference.
Until 2014 I am still rooting for the Mini.

  • Can 't connect old iMac to new Mac Mini

I'm trying to connect an older iMac (450MHz, cherry red OS 9.2.1) to a new Mac Mini (OS X 10.4.3).
I don't have a Frewire cable, so I'm trying to do it with an ethernet router. I seem to be doing it incorrectly. File Sharing is turned on for the iMac. I have set TCP/IP to configure with DHCP, but when I try doing Connect to Server from the Mini, it can't see the iMac. What could be wrong?
After I tried DCHP, I tried configuring manually. I input the router's IP address, the correct subnet mask, and an invented IP for the iMac, making it one integer larger than the Mini. Still no luck.
    Now what?

I don't think you even need a router for those Macs… someone please confirm or correct me, and I think the Mini has an autosensing socket that will let you talk directly to another ethernet device, in this case the iMac…
That aside, when you're not using DHCP please specify exactly what you've put in IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS Servers and Search Domains on both Macs, and do they both have AppleTalk on?
"the router's IP address, the correct subnet mask, and an invented IP for the iMac, making it one integer larger than the Mini…" is only two IP addresses and this needs one each for the Macs and a third for the router… The router probably has a factory default of either 10.0.0.2 or 192.168.1.2, yes? In that case the Macs want to be x.x.x.3 and x.x.x.4
Then, did you literally mean "Connect to Server from the Mini, it can't see the iMac…" It won't, unless you either enter the iMac's Server Address or manually Browse…

  • Should I buy an iMac or a Mac mini?

HI everyone! Can't decide which one to purchase! I quite like the idea of the portability of the Mac mini and would probably use it alot with my tv for entertainment, but was looking to get the new mid range model for additional space, better specs etc. But the price would be edging near iMac territor, plus I'd probably also need a new monitor for the Mac mini. Just wondering how people have found there experiences with the Mac mini, would they recommend it or just recommend on iMac instead? Especially since the price differenice not bring too different including the external monitor Just to note, Ive heard about the lack of being able to modify the new Mac minis, this isent a problem for me as I'm not big into tech and wouldnt even know where to start on doing something like that!   thanks in advane for your advice!

I’m a recent iMac-to-mini convert. I’ve had two iMacs since 2006. Both served me well, but I use my computer mostly for editing text, and when the ultrawide monitors came out, I realised that having two documents or windows open side by side would be very handy for me. So I bought one, used it with my iMac until the new minis arrived, and then bought the mid-range i5 with a 256 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM (needed for running Windows in a virtual machine). A big improvement from my old (2009) iMac. If you don’t need higher-range graphics or four cores, a mini will be fine. You can pick and choose the size and quality of monitor that best suits your needs and budget. The upgradeability of the new minis isn’t great, but then neither is it for the iMacs. I liked my iMacs, but I will never buy another.
