2011 iMac zig zag lines after screen saver

I have recently noticed that my iMac has zig zag lines for several seconds after it wakes up from the screen saver. I cannot see them during normal use. They are multi-colored made up of small squares. The graphic card is an AMD Radeon HD 6770M. Has anyone else had this problem?

There appears to be blue zig zag lines outlining the objects in the videos I watch or on certain items displayed on the screen. My desktop background is also being outlined in these strange bluish lines.

  • IMac freezes when changing the screen saver

    Hi all:
I originally posted this in the "Using Mac OS X" forum (iMac freezes when changing the screen saver, but thought I'd post here as well since the issue arises on a freshly installed OS.
We've got three 350MHz slot-loading G3 iMacs (with 512MB RAM) which we're planning to use for basic word processing. The install of Panther (10.3.5 from black retail cds with 10-seat volume license) went fine on the first two. Ran the updates to 10.3.9, installed MS Office 2004, everything working great (they're a little slow, but after all, they are only 350 MHz).
On the third, the first problem we noticed was the computer would lock up whenever we changed the screen saver from the default (Flurry; Computer Name also works). It continues to do so even after: repair permissions; repair disk; Disk Warrior; reset pram; reset nvram; reset pmu; change RAM; change hard drive; erase hard drive; write zeros to hard drive; reinstall with different set of retail CDs; trash preferences, and delete cache files. (If there's anything I've left out, it's in the other thread).
Now we've noticed that we can't create any new user accounts. We've thought about putting this one in production, just warning the user that they can't change the screen saver, but god only knows what will turn up next.
I'm starting to think it's a logic board issue, but could it be that selective? And would you see the same problem with another hard drive and different install discs? Am I missing something?
BTW, there's a crash log with the other thread.

    Dual 2.0 GHz G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I'm going to mark this one as answered.
I removed the hard drive from the iMac, and put it into another 350 MHz iMac, and everything works great. I can select any screen saver without having it freeze, create new accounts, whatever my little heart desires.
In checking the history of the problem iMac, there was an assortment of problems with booting (both from the hard drive and from the CD-ROM drive) which were never satisfactorily resolved. The problems just seemed to go away after sitting unplugged for a few days, as much as for anything we actually did to it.
Now we just have to decide whether it's worth fixing, or using it somewhere in a non-critical role with OS 9 installed.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

  • Macbook Pro and Zig Zag Lines

Hello....I am wondering if anyone can shine some light on my problem. I have a Macbook Pro (15", Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.33 GHz) that is about 4 years old.
About 2 years back the MBP tossed up zig zag lines across the screen and refused to work. I put the MBP away for a year and 1/2 and on a whim decided to hook it up to my mini to see if I could recover my data in target mode via firewire.....I could, and tossed my stuff on to my ex-hd. I then tried running Disk Utility on the MBP via the Mini. Once finished repairing the disc I restarted the MBP and it worked! The MBP has worked since early Spring and craps out every other week or so...back to the zig zag lines, etc. I repeat the above mentioned first aid and it then works again....(I'm unable to use the MBP's Dick Utility because it quits before it can open???)
I was told it could be the logic board...and the MBP does run hot...I just find it interesting that I can hook it to the Mini for some CPR and it works again!
    So there you have it.
    Any takers?
    Thanx!

    Hi s,
If it's one of the machines potentially affected by the NVIDIA issue, I'd certainly have it tested:

  • Password prompt after screen saver or lock screen

I am running Yosemite on two Macs – an early-2008 MBP 15" and a mid-2010 MBP 13". Both are configured for password after screen saver or when waking up. I have hot corners configured to enable screen saver (lower left), lock screen (upper right), disable screen saver (lower right). On awakening from either screen saver or lock screen, the 15" requests the password in a screen similar to the login after boot or switch user screen – the fullscreen, blurry background, prompt in the center. The 13" prompts for a password in an ordinary modal dialogue window that includes a lock icon and displays on a black background. The 13" has an external monitor attached, but the behavior is the same if it's disconnected. Both systems have one user, and identical settings in Users and Groups. The behavior is the same whether the Guest user is enabled or disabled.
I can't find any settings to account for the difference, even obscure ones shown in Onyx. Any ideas as to why the password prompt is handled differently in these two cases? Thanks in advance...

  • "Require password after screen saver begins" & "Start Screen Saver"

    Hello All,
Can someone tell me what the UNIX command strings are to set 1) "Require password after screen saver begins" on, 2) "Start Screen Saver" to 15 minutes and (3) "Disable remote control infrared receiver" via ARD? I have over 100 clients and it would be nice to issue the commands instead of walking up to each Mac spread all over the campus. Most of the clients are running 3.3.1. Thanks!

    Hello, Mike
There may be a command and the UNIX forums would be the place to really find the answer.
The problem is that each User has their own Screen Saver and Security settings. They are not global settings. If ARD is set up to access all of the other systems, then you can do it right from your office and flag which ones have been configured with the new settings with labels.

  • Zig zag line following a curve

how do i make a zig zag line follow a curve and have the 'teeth' be evenly spaced/sized?

ok, i think i got it nailed..heres how it works for me.
    1.draw the free form line.
    2. apply Roughen Effect, set size at 0, DETAIL value affects the "'teeth' per inch" spacing, POINTS set at-smooth
    3. apply Zig Zag Effect, SIZE affects 'depth/height of 'teeth'", check 'absolute', RIDGES PER SEGMENT-set at 0, POINTS--is checked corner because i need a sharp edge 'tooth'
thats it..Very cool, thanks to all who answered, this is something i have always been trying to figure out, and now i have an answer..Great resource, i will recommend to my colleagues too!

  • Imac G4 15" Screen Stays Black After Screen Saver Goes To Sleep

I have an imac G4 15" that I just got from a friend that works pretty well, except that after it goes from the screen saver into to sleep mode, the screen stays black. I can hear the error chimes when I try to awaken the screen with the keys, but the screen just stays black. I have tried to increase the brightness, etc. but to no avail. Eventually I have to resort to re-booting and I am afraid that at some point, either the computer won't reboot or one of my external hard drives will crash. Any advice from someone who has experience with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
    THANKS!

  • Annoying: Mail app opens randomly after screen saver login

    Hi
I have my security settings setup so that everytime my iMac goes into screen saver mode it asks for login password. Recently I have noticed that if I leave the computer unattended for a long period of time (a few hours) and come back, the mail app opens up. If I just go away for a few minutes and come back the problem does not occur.
Since I am not using the mail app and have not set it up, the setup account window is the one to come up.
I have checked the Login Items under Accounts in System Preferences and it's not there. I have also right clicked the icon in the dock and checked if it was set to start up automatically - it isn't.
I have read online this maybe has something to do with email alerts from iCal but I have not set up iCal to send email, nor do I know where I can disable that type of feature. This is happening even when iCal is closed and I have no events for that day. I've looked around in the prefrences of iCal and disabled any option that has something to do with email but it still happens.
The next logical step was to check Activity Monitor to try and see what started a process. You see I am originally a Windows user and have recently converted my OS religion. Back in Windows when something like this happened I had many tools that could tell me what started the application and even it's command line. But with the Mac all i have is the activity monitor and I'm still not familiar. I have clicked the process and then inspect, the parent process indicated launchd, pressing that lead me to another inspector window still without much info.
How can I solve this, it is becoming rather annoying?
Also does anyone know a better process monitor for mac? or how to use top on the terminal to get the information I need?
Please help a confused new mac user!
    Thanks

So I've tried both of the tips you gave my guys, but non of them works
But I've found out something. When I switch to different space (in spaces), than drop some file and then try to switch back to my mail space, there are 2 possibilities how to do it. First - I just move mouse to the space to where I want to switch, wait for a second and it switch automatically or I can move mouse to the space where I want to switch and than press spacebar to make it faster.
The strange thing with opening app from dock happens just when I press the spacebar.
And question for your other answer - yes, it happens just with apps in my dock.
    It is so uncomfortable...
EDIT: few days ago I've run OnyX (which was probably mistake) and this happens probably since than. I used it because Snow Leopard got little bit slower so I wanted to clean it... It might be because of that.

  • Blank Screen after Screen Saver

I have a MacBook Pro with an external VGA monitor connected - desktop not shared (i.e. different desktop regions on both screens).
All is fine until the screen saver kicks in. When I wake the machine up again, only the external monitor shows an image - the laptop screen remains blank.
If I use Screen Sharing from another Mac, I can see what is on the laptop screen - and interact with all the applications there exactly as expected - but the screen remains stubbornly blank.
Is there a way to force redrawing of the screen/nudge the Mac to start using the laptop screen again (or better still a fix to stop the problem happening in the first place?)

To be more specific - I think it's when the power settings kick in rather than the screen saver - I haven't explicitly changed any screen saver or power settings from the default.
The Mac sits there for a good while with both the laptop screen and external screen on. The laptop screen dims after a while but still has a complete display. Then after a further period the laptop screen goes black/off but the external screen remains on. After this I cannot get the laptop screen back without a reboot (achieved through screen sharing from another Mac to avoid a hard boot and losing open documents).

  • Movie disappears after screen saver kicks in

If my screen saver (it doesn't matter which one) kicks in while watching a movie, after I press a key to stop the screen saver, Quicktime still plays the movie but there's nothing on the screen, all I see is my background. I can hear the sound, but no picture. Anyone have a fix for this problem besides turning off the screen saving while watching movies?

If I play a movie with VLC or QT the display will NOT go to sleep...
Are you sure about that?  Because that's not what happens on my machine forcing me to run a little utility (Jiggler) to keep my machine awake (to avoid having to change the energy saver prefs each time).
FWIW, there are alternatives to Jiggler (Caffeine and InsomniaX are two others).  Perhaps you might consider one of these when using Front Row.
Note, it is possible my specific problem has to do with using multiple displays, where one of those displays is my TV when using vlc.

  • How to make it look like the camera is following a zig zagging line

I have an animated video where a person clicks a button and an arrow appears coming out of the right side of the computer. I would like to make it look like the camera follows the arrow as it zooms along a zig zag path and eventually ends at another computer.  Does anyone know of any good tutorials for this?
    Thanks,
    Paul

This is just a matter of keyframes for camera position and point of interest. You are probably not going to find a tutorial that exactly matches your project. Try this:
Open up 2 views, one active camera, one top view.
Set a position keyframe for the camera where you want the movement to start.
Drag the point of interest to point at your subject (animated arrow)
Using the top view and setting the CTI (current time indicator) to the end point of the camera move, move the camera's point of interest  to the same position as the animated arrow
Still in the top view, move the camera to it's final position
Using the pen tool (keyboard shortcut g) add points to the camera position path and drag them into a zig zag shape using the top view
Selecting the Point of interest in the timeline, adjust the position of the point of interest to follow the arrow as it animates across the screen by moving the CTI and setting new positions.
Another thing you could do would be just to use a lookAt expression for point of interest. This would keep the camera pointed at the arrow.
Hope this helps. Animating a camera is one of the most basic skills an AE artist should have. It takes a bit of practice but it's not hard.

  • Cannot log in back after screen saver locked the computer

    Hi there,
We have a domain environment with Windows 2012 R2 and a Windows 2003 domain controllers and Windows XP and Windows 7 clients. We have setup a GPO for screen saver which lock the computer after 15 minutes idle. In the last few weeks on some Windows 7 computers
after the screen saver locked the computer the users cannot log in back. Error message come up with Username or password is incorrect.
I've tried to reach the computer through RDP but same error came up even tried to log in as domain admin. I could log in as domain admin locally (switch user option) but as a user cannot. I've tried to restart Netlogon, Workstation and Server services but
nothing happened. In the event viewer no related error message. The only way to login back as a user to restart the computer. It is not really good solution as they opened lots of things which wasn't saved.
Anyone has any idea or experience to solve this issue?
    Many thanks

    Hi,
Since you could login with Domain Admin locally, it should didn't have problem with Netlogon service and other logon correspond service. It seems like the account itself problem.
When this problem occures, have you tried to use other computer logon with the problematic account for test? If other normal computer also had same problem when using the account. It's should your Server authenticate problem. If not, it maybe the domain
account profile problem, you can try to remove the account and readded it for test.
