2011 MacBook Pro 15" Trackpad missing clicks and spontaneously releasing

Last week I received a new MacBook Pro at work. It seems to have an issue with the trackpad.
Specifically, clicks are not always recognized, and sometimes while I'm dragging a window the trackpad will release the click spontaneously, even though I haven't removed my thumb.
The problem seems to be that even though I hear and feel the tactile "click" response from the trackpad, the internal button isn't actually getting depressed. Likewise, sometimes the internal button will release early, before the tactile "click" you normally get when you remove your finger from the trackpad. If I use a firmer press, it seems to work all the time.
I did take the laptop in to the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store, but they just told me it was normal and to press harder. Now, I've been using apple laptops for a long time, and I use the Magic Trackpad on my desk, so I disagree - It definitely does not feel normal to me. I don't think I should have to remember to "press harder". I'm used to the tactile click response indicating that a click has occurred, and now I can't. I have to feel the click, and then keep pressing harder to be guaranteed that my click is noticed.
Has anybody else had this problem?

  • 2011 MacBook Pro loose trackpad

About a few weeks ago my three-month-old MacBook Pro's trackpad started making very noticable annoying "click" sound (especially on the right side), as if something was loose underneath. I went to my local Apple store, and the genius "tightened up the screws and cleaned out the debris". He said he didn't notice any difference, however the problem persists when I tested it. He offered to replace the trackpad for me free of charge (as my Mac is still in warranty), and the problem seemed to have gone away. However when I got home, the problem arose again, this time on the left side of the trackpad. It is a tiny "click" sound when putting very little amount of pressure on the trackpad (I did not press it down fully). It is not easily noticable, but very annoying indeed. Im probably going to visit them next week again to get the things right. Anyone having the same problem??

The trackpad will "click"when pressed as a feedback that the user have clicked (same as left mouse key) on something.
The "click" occours at very low pressure when pressing left, right, center or downside the pad.
For that i assume, your trackpad work as designed.

  • Can I hook up an early 2011 macbook pro to a new iMac AND another thunderbolt display?

I want to get a new iMac, and I have an early 2011 macbook pro.  Can I use a two-way thunderbolt cable to hook these two up?  If so, will I still be able to use full functionality on both as I move windows to and from one of them?  (Like, I use my macbook track pad to move a safari window over to my iMac, and then I can either use my iMac mouse or my macbook's trackpad to do things with that safari window.
ALSO, is it possible to hook up an additional thunderbolt display to all of this?  Basically my end-goal is to have a macbook pro hooked up to an iMac with an additional thunderbolt display, that's my "dream set-up" which will make a lot of stuff that I do a lot easeir and less crowded on one moniter.

no the thunderbold display thing would let you use the imac as a monitor for the macbook apart from acting the role of display the imac would be dorment so a very pricy monitor

  • My early 2011 MacBook Pro says battery not detected and does not work with a new battery either. Works only with the charger plugged in.

About a year back i had replaced the MLB of my early 2011 macbook pro and it was all working fine. A month back my battery went dead saying "Battery Not Detected". I went to Ample technologies, Bangalore, India and gave it for diagnosis. Ample technologies are the authorized Apple support service in Bangalore, India. After 3 days and no phone calls they email me that "They feel that the MLB MIGHT be the problem and they want to test it by replacing the MLB and i have to pay for their testing". I had already spent 40k indian rupees ($700) less than a year back to replace an MLB and now they want to replace it again at the cost of 43k ($750) indian rupees. I have no idea what to do now. Spending 80k indian rupees ($1400) in less than a year to replace the MLB twice sounds unfair to me. Can someone help me out here ? Is there a valid warranty period applicable , since i have changed the MLB a year back ?

short of doing a SMC reset, you maybe at their mercy.

You can try yourself running the Apple Hardware Test- and see if it generates any error codes. Post the results

  • Early 2011 MacBook Pro 17" trackpad click faulty

Off and on, my trackpad will not allow me to use the clicking function.  The trackpad tracks normally but every once in awhile the clicking feels a bit different and will not function with a click.  There is no problem with it allowing me to "tap to click" but that does not help me when I need to drag or select an object.  I am going to take it to the Genius Bar but my fear is that the function comes and goes for different lengths of time.  Currently, it just started working again but earlier today it stopped working for the better part of 2 days.  This issue started at about 5 months ago but would normally only fault for a short period and I never made it to the Genius Bar because it would correct itself.
I have restored from a Time Machine backup as well as started from scratch with a clean system.  Neither restores make a huge difference in fixing the issue.
If anyone has experienced something like this on their MacBook Pro did you experience a similiar feeling of a different touch or response at times with your trackpad?

I have a Early 2011, but don't use the trackpad or keyboard learning how easy they get messed up (keys don't work, trackpad looses sensitivity) after a mere three years of use with my last 15".
I keep my keyboard area covered with the thin foam packaging, use a mouse and a old PC keyboard that can take the pain better. 7 years old and $4 at a thrift shop,  I can throw them across the room and they still work.
$3000 machine and the keys stop working and the trackpad goes numb after 3 years, go figure.

  • Late-2011 MacBook Pro 13" Freezes with Clicking Noise

    Hi guys,
I bought a MacBook Pro for my birthday in April earlier this year (the model is the Late 2011 i5 13 inch model). Recently I have been encountering a problem where randomly a clicking noise will start and repeat every 5 or so seconds. On top of this, the laptop completely freezes, with the spinning beachball, however I am still able to move the mouse around. The only way to get the clicking to stop and to restore functionality is to force shut down the computer by holding the power button, which presents the problem of potential work loss.
I have searched the internet for people who are having similar problems and have come across some others who seem like they have the same problem, but I cannot be sure. Could this mean that my hard drive is failing? I'm certain that it's not the SuperDrive as I am still able to insert DVDs and hear the drive spin up and the laser assembly move while the clicking is going on. In the absence of other mechanical components in the computer (besides the fan), and with the freezing, I assume that the noise is coming from the HDD.
Has anyone else had anything like this happen to them? And on top of that, is it worth taking it to a Genius Bar? As I do not have a way to reproduce the problem (it occurs at random with no obvious trigger), do you think they will be able to do anything, or am I on my own?
Sorry for being a stereotypical 'register-only-for-help' person, but I rely on this MacBook for my college work and cannot afford for it to be broken.
I hope you guys can give me advice.

Okay, I'll backup my files and take it to the Apple store. Thanks for the help.

  • Macbook Pro Retina Trackpad shoots down and left

I bought my MacBook Pro less than 90 days ago. OS X Yosemite. I thought that the trackpad issue (it shoots down and left whenever it feels like it) was due to sensitivity...or perhaps my fingers/hand may be too close to the pad. So I turned all trackpad options off except for the double click and scroll. I also turned off devices that could be interfering with the Macbook - or removed them from the vicinity of my machine. I turned off bluetooth capability.
Still, when I'm using the trackpad...sure enough within a minute the curser swings down the to the left.
As I'm gamer this really ***** - I'll be playing a game and suddenly my screen is minimized and I'm scrambling to open it up again. I'll play the game for another two or three minutes and wooo...there goes my curser! Honestly, it's driving me nuts. This is a brand new machine.
Another Mac owner suggested that I buy a mouse. I haven't used a mouse since I owned a desk top. I just want this machine to work!

It could be connected to interference from other electronics in the immediate area.    If you think that is unlikely and you have access to an authorised Apple outlet or store it would be best to take it back and have them sort it.   It is under warranty so should cost nothing.

  • Macbook Pro mid 2012 HDD clicking and low performance

    Hello, everybody!
I have a question about the HDD, I think it's failing or it's very close to failing.
From the moment I bought my Macbook Pro 13" mid 2012 model I noticed quite low performance and also very disturbing sound of the HDD clicking, even when I don't touch the laptop. Running Disk Utility check and Apple Diagnostics became my favorite pastime, but it showed no sign of HDD (or other kind of) failure.

Also I've noticed that the disk read operation takes more than (I believe) it should. For example, when I turn the laptop on and it was in the hibernation mode, it restores quite quickly and shows the login screen, but it's actually impossible to enter anything there, it just doesn't respond to keyboard or mouse input. By the time the login screen times out I am still unable to enter anything, and it goes back to sleep, and the story repeats.
More to it, most of the apps take ages to start. Preview starts in 5-10 seconds.
I thought it shouldn't be a software problem, since I formatted the drive and installed a fresh copy of OS X just two weeks ago.
So I went to the reseller I bought it from (Compustore here in Germany) and asked to check the laptop. They did, and told me everything was fine with it.
Is it indeed the normal behavior of Macbooks? I don't have anything to compare to, it's my first Mac, but I'm really far from being satisfied with it. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions,
    Elijah.

Is it indeed the normal behavior of Macbooks?
No, of course not. It is very abnormal and the reseller's conclusion that everything is fine is obviously incorrect.
I have no explanation for the fact that Apple Diagnostics nor Disk Utility indicates a fault, but if the problem remained unchanged after taking the extreme measure of completely erasing the hard disk and installing OS X as you explained, then the only remaining cause is a hardware fault that has eluded all attempts to detect it.
I formatted the drive and installed a fresh copy of OS X just two weeks ago.
Confim the problems remained immediately after those actions and prior to installing any other software. The most common explanation for the behaviour you describe is the presence of any number of ill-conceived "anti-virus" or "cleanup" utilities.
If you described the problem and your attempts to rectify it accurately, then the reseller did not perform adequate diagnostic testing, or they are being deliberately deceitful, or they are simply incompetent.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro Stuck on White Screen and Won't Shut Down

    Greetings,
I just received a 15 inch Macbook Pro with a 2.2 i7 processor earlier today. On my previous computer, a 2009 MB P with a Core2Duo, I've had a shutdown issue on it for the past week or so: when I click the power button, and confirm the shutdown, the computer would start shutting down as normal, however once it reached the white screen with the spinning loading symbol at the bottom, it just got stuck on that. As I've transfered my old data to my brand new computer, I'm still having the same issue with it. I was wondering if this was due to a worm, or some software incompliancy? If anyone could shed any light, I'd be greatful.
    Thanks.

Were you using any of them when the issue occurred (or just prior to it)?
Have you looked for updates on all of them?

  • Macbook Pro Retina trackpad doesnt click

I have only had my MBP retina for just under 2 weeks and the trackpad has gone a little weird. When i press down on the trackpad on the left side to click on something, it makes a distinct 'click' noise which is normal. But on the right side of the trackpad it doesnt do this. you cant press it down at all. It still presses something on the screen. I know it something really small but it is really annoying.
Has anyone had this problem before? I really dont want to take it back to the store as it took me 3 whole days to install adobe suite software and orgaise all my files
    Thanks

Mine is from December 2012. ANd i had just now the same, no click sound on right click op pad.
What i just did and it helped, and yes i do travel with it so the reason it happened that the thin chassis was bend a bit. I am calling apple bout this. But i took the left and right corner (front) and bend it slightly down. Put the machine on your knee and push gently!!! GENTLY!!!!! down on the right front and right left corner. I guess the chassis in the middle was now slightly bend back and the clicking sound and the functionalty is back in the pad.
WEIRD SOLUTION, I KNOW! But it helped.... But best, call apple and swop....

  • Is there any way to disable electric whining on the 2011 Macbooks Pro, when scrolling in Firefox and opening new tabs?

This happens only in Firefox w/o addons; under Mac OS X 10.6.7

To specify the issue: A high-frequency noise can be heard coming from the left upper side of the Macbook (from beneath the 1 key). It can only be heard when scrolling and opening new tabs in firefox and is not influenced by the volume level and muting.

  • Hinge faulty? / Harddisk speed on 2011 Macbook Pro

I've just (4 days ago) moved from a silver unibody 2008 macbook pro to a new 2011 macbook pro, I'm noticing differences and so far they're not really positive .
I like to work laying on the sofa with the base of the macbook resting vertically on my chest with the screen tilted back to make reading easy. Although this worked perfectly on the 2008 macbook the new one keeps closing itself! As I'm trying to work the screen constantly drifts back to about an 85 degree position (presumably due to its weight and the stiffness of the hinges).
To say this is annoying puts it mildly.
The forums seem full of posts about hinges and I'd be interested in opinions as to this being a fault or a feature before I travel to an apple store.
Also - is anyone else seeing an disk speed issues with a 2011 macbook? I've just restored from a time machine backup and the new macbook feels half the speed of the old one.

If I leave the base on the laptop horizontal (on a table or similar) then the display is self supporting in any position, it's only when the base is vertical that the problem occurs.
With the base vertical the display is also self supporting but not past about 85 degrees.
You guys are definitely sure that's a fault? I'd like to think it was, but the apple store is about 45 miles and its a long roundtrip
    Thanks for the reply.
Re the disk I'm showing a five minute load average of 1.67 and although multiple applications are running its exactly the same apps as used to run on the 2008 machine without issue. CPU is sitting about 95% idle.
I've used disk utility to run a repair on the permissions and a verify of the disk but this doesn't seem to have helped.
The two thoughts that I had were 1) Was my old disk faster than 5200rpm? 2) Is there some process that must run following a time machine restore before speed comes back to usual?

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro 15 - Slow and Freezes

    Good Morning.
This is MBP is running slowly and freezes, particularly if watching video, but is sluggish even opening applications from finder.
The MBP was taken to a apple service provider with the complaint of very sluggish and a strange graphic issue (The graphics were garbled at times - there is a known issue with logic boards.) a picture of the graphics was provided.
The service provider stated that the HDD drive failed the SMART test but graphics passed his test. When questioned if he was comfortable that nothing was wrong with graphics based on picture he stated that he advised I take it to the apple store. Which I did. There the MBP passed both the graphics and HDD test. based on the photograph the no less than 3 geniuses agreed the logic board was bad, though it wasn't the "typical" failure. The genius bar was given the information about the apple service provider and slowness. All of that was entered into the comments.
The MBP was sent to apples repair depot where the logic board and magsafe board was replaced. and the MBP was returned with assurances that all was well.
Though the graphics issue has not reoccurred the speed is not any better and may be worse. (in excess of a minute fifteen boot, noticeable delay opening browsers or menus).
    Additonal information:
When provided to the apple service provider (and presumably the apple store) the computer contained the original 4gb ram. and had never been opened. The ram showing on this report is crucial, contains the mac logo and was installed because the service provider said 4gb was low, so when the computer returned and was still slow it was tried - it seems to have made no difference).
The HDD failed to secure erase the freespace on HDD 3 times prior to repair with the message "could not create temp file" after running overnight.
I've reset PRAM and SMC and run trough various "why is my mac slow" guides to no avail.
The anti virus was also added post repair to look for any thing malicious.
    Help please.

"This is not a retina 15" - though I just turned off the graphics switching to see if that made any difference."
That recall is not just for the Retina model:
    From:
    https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/
    Affected Models
    MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011)
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011)
I'm aware of that recall it is the "known problem" I mentioned in the original post, however the linked story RE: Yosemite referenced retina MacBook Pros
There is an issue in retina MBPs and Yosemite:
    http://www.macnn.com/articles/14/11/04/several.support.threads.discussing.issue. related.to.gpu.switching/
"Regardless of symptoms, the issue has been traced to switching to the discrete GPU from the integrated GPU.
    Read more: http://www.macnn.com/articles/14/11/04/several.support.threads.discussing.issue. related.to.gpu.switching/#ixzz3YWcK80s9"
So I was not sure if this was discussing a separate issue, that is why I mentioned it was not a Retina.
"Does "disk warrior" report anything that the apple store test would not?"
The Apple Store would run the Apple System Diagnostic (ASD).
    Re:
    http://www.dannydullin.com/apple-service-diagnostic-asd-reference-list/
The trick when you take it to the Apple Store is to make your computer repeat the failure that you see. It actually would be a good idea to get it to fail just before your appointment. Don't shut it down just take it to them frozen.
Then you can hand the genius the MBP and say, "This is what happens."
Actually a suggestion of another senior member around here. I'd credit her if I could remember who it was.
They ran two test one was a video test and the other was a hard drive test "quick apple store" that said it "randomly checked disk" or something close to that.
I can only hope to get it to fail right before going. - only real problem is that considering the apple disclaimer about their responsibility for your data, there is absolutely no way they are getting it with our data on it. But if I can get it to fail I'll let them see it before wiping it... I mean the sluggishness is obvious so at least they can see that.
I do appreciate the ideas. There were a number of people there when I dropped it off the first time, one of them was on her third logic board. Another on the second.
