2011 Macbook Pro appears to have only Win7

Hey all,
I'm a Mac newbie. Took a 2011 Macbook in trade for a Windows laptop from a friend because he said "It don't work good." I booted it up and I see what he meant. Macbook boots into Windows.
Here's what I found:
Syatem tray has Bootcamp in it. When I prompt it to boot into Mac OS, it advises that can't be located on the disc and reboots into Windows.
Pulled the back off the Macbook and verified it has a 320GB HDD
Windows C Drive properties show 262 of 297 GB free. This is normal for a Win 7 installation in my experience.
It would seem that the previous owner installed Bootcamp and then Win7. When they did so, they must have assigned the entire HDD as the Windows partition which overwrote the MacOS and made this a Windows only machine. There are a coupe of weird quirks I've discovered in the few hours I've been playing with it: Apple boot up sounds are present as opposed to the Win boot sound and the Recycle bin is not on the desktop and can't be placed there via the control panel. I know, silly Windows problems.
Anyway, I digress. If I buy a Snow Leopard install disc (what came on it according to Apple), will I have issues doing the install since this is essentially a windows machine?  Should I just pull the HDD and Fat32 format it before starting the install?
I've spent several hours overnight reading lots of different Apple forums and articles and haven't seen anyone with my single OS issue. Any help is appreciated.

You'll want to give Apple a call and have them send you the restore media for your model.  Typically, the retail version of the OS will not support a model that shipped with that same version.  That's usually do to drivers and other hardware support unique to that model that was never included when the retail version was released.  Typically a retail version isn't updated.  So when it first comes out, it you were to go to a store six month later, it would still be the same version.  Essentially, anything that would have been released after the launch of the OS wouldn't be supported by the retail version.  Apple will provide you with the correct restore media for your model for a reasonable fee... typically just the cost of the DVD and the shipping.

As far as I know the older mac is compatible with AirDrop.
    Thanks

So by dual-signal, are you referring to 2.5Ghz/5Ghz signal?
I'm pretty sure my Mac mini 2011 has that but for whatever reason I cannot send via AirDrop to the mini. The mini can see other computers like my 2010 MacBook Pro and send files to it, but not in reverse. The MBP is unable to see or send to the mini unless the mini has engaged it to send a file to MBP. Even then it's temporary and the mini will disappear from the MBP's AirDrop radar upon completing the delivery of its file.
So I'm a bit perplexed on how the Mac mini has AirDrop, can see other AirDrop computers and send files to them, but cannot be seen on other Macs to reciprocate.

  • Macbook Pro appears to have viruses-How to erase

My macbook Pro seems to have retained a virus.  I was wondering, what's the best way to erase everything and start over?

What makes you believe you have a virus? Being infected with malware is actually quite unlikely at this time on a Mac.
To answer your question literally, you can erase everything by following these directions:
How to reinstall Mac OS X from scratch
However, this may not fix the problem, depending on what it is and what is causing it. It also might be a ridiculously extreme solution to a problem that could be fixed in a few minutes, again depending on what the problem is and what is causing it. Give us more details and we can better advise you.

  • 2011 Macbook pro continues to have issues what should I do?

In 2011 I purchased an early 2011 2.2 i7 Macbook Pro new. Not long after I bought it I began to have graphics issues with the computer. The computer was sent into Apple and a logicboard replacement was done. I continued to have intermediate issues with the computer after I received it back. These issues became worse over time, eventually to the point of the computer not booting up. In addition to serious graphics issues and random shutdowns.  This eventually led me to take my macbook on April 12th 2013 back Apple.
A repair was done in which the logicboard was replaced again. I received my Mac back on April 19th. Today April 22 my Mac shutdown again. Also some of the graphics issues from much earlier have come back. Some scrambled graphics and some tearing in apps appear on the screen. The computer shut down on me twice on two seperate occassions today. For no reason it just shut off. It use to do this before the logicboard replacement. I went ahead and submitted an error report to Apple after reboot.
I am a design professional and am associated with Appsterdam. The repair on my mac took a week and I feel far behind in my work. However just at the time that I am trying to catch up on my work. This Macbook pro has begun to go out on me again. I am so upset that I bought a unit from a bad batch or something. They have already replaced the logicboard twice as a result of these shutdowns and graphics issues.
I don't know what to do. Any information about what my next step should be would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your reply. I shall contact the Apple store again soon. My Macbook has had it's logicboard replaced two times now as a result of graphics issues. I have had the computer back now for about two weeks but it's performance continues to deteriorate. After the 2nd logicboard replacement. Some of my apps look like this...   =(

hello, i'm here to ask about my worries about wasting more money on re-downloading my favorite movies back on to my macbook 2011 model, because in a few weeks time, I'm upgrading to an durable SSD drive but my music/movies are at stake, so should i be safe with icloud as long as i have my itunes account? please respond back asap! my email [email protected] to be sure

the clone won't take you that long - i cloned a 30GB drive in 20 minutes.
    here are the steps:
first get yourself a usb external enclosure...install your new drive there....
    then download carbon copy cloner.
now connect your external to your macbook's usb.
launch disk utility - format/erase your new drive to mac os extended journaled.
close disk utility and launch carbon copy cloner.
clone your old drive - to your new drive - you will get a pop up saying that a recovery partition wasn't created.
create one with carbon copy - proceed with the clone.  once the clone is done, turn your macbook off.
install new drive in your macbook and install old drive to your usb enclosure - use it for back up purposes.
turn your macbook back on - if boot time takes longer than 45 secs - go to system preferences - startup disk - select your new drive as the startup drive - restart your macbook.
now it should boot at 14 sec.
    it's that simple

  • LaCie Desktop Manager doesn't recognize LaCie RAID with my 2011 MacBook Pro

    Hello,
I have a new MacBook Pro 17" but I am not able to use the LaCie Desktop Manager with the LaCie 4big Quadra Enterprise Class RAID. The drive is recognized by the finder via eSATA, FireWire, USB, but is not recognized by the LaCie Desktop Manager. This prevents me from encrypting the drive. The LaCie Desktop Manager could recognize the raid with my early 2008 MacBook Pro.
I'd like to know if anyone else is having the same problem with their 2011 MacBook Pro.
I have been communicating with LaCie support but he tells me that he can't check the same or similar configuration as mine.
    Thanks,
    Dennis

Looks like the cable is the same if you still have the 2010.

To check your model go to About This Mac (by clicking on the Apple icon, top left) and then select more info. If you wish to use mirroring you will need one from 2011 or later running OSX 10.8 or later. The alternative would be to use 3rd party software like Airparrot.

  • Late 2011 Macbook Pro green pixels on the screen where dark colors should appear.

I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro I bought it new with 4 gb of ram. About 4 months ago i purchased 8 gb of pny ram for this model and upgraded the ram. I followed all of the safety precautions and discharged my static electricity before upgrading. It increased the speed of my mac and helps with certain tasks. About 2-3 weeks i notices my mac froze and strange green black and pink bars appeared on the screen so i hold the power button to shut it down and it solves the problem this will happen about once a month but otherwise my mac works perfect. Now about a month ago I powered my mac on and low and behold The screen was covered in green pixels. I tried rebooting twice and it didn't do anything then i let it sleep for about 5 mins opened my mac and the green pixels were gone. Now my mac is still usable and everything works its just sometimes like once in a while ill get a few pixels and closing and opening my mac fixes it. I was curious if this was related to one another or is my mac just starting to die....

I have been getting green pixels/boxes the last while...
I have noticed it after waking the machine from sleep. Not 100% sure if that is the only time it happens. It goes away after a few seconds, typically.
Any idea what is going on?

  • How do i access my installer disc on a 2011 macbook pro as they are virtual now, i have tried to use command r and hold shift on start up

I have, a 2011 macbook pro with osx lion, last year  it died, by doing the not getting past the logo and startup gear, i tried doing the data screen repair where u type some code and try and repair, that didnt work so i took it to genius bar and it wasnt in warrenty and they were gonna charge me but as was only 3 weeks over the warrenty period, so they did for free, and the harddrive they installed had a 90 day warrenty and that is ova now, and my mac has now done the same thing again and this time i think was a power interruption at some point and now has a fault, another thing that crossed my mind is that yes this has done this but could they have (to save money and not right offf a new one) given me my same harddrive back and jus wiped it now 5 months down the track its broken again?
The laptop isnt even 18 months old and has broken down twice, my old macbook had 4 5 years not a hiccup.
In conclusion i need to get photoes off it and cant seem to activate safe mode, or do i know how to access the startup disk that the guy did at genius last time, or get to the data screeen that allowed me to attempt to repair the drive. Can someone help me please, i have tried command r and holding shift, meither have worked.

It's hard to know whether your hard drive has actually failed or if your system has just gotten badly corrupt. If the former, unfortunately, there may be no way to get any data off the drive at this point. If there aren't any backups of that data, it will be gone forever, unless perhaps a high-priced (ie, in the thousand dollar range) data recovery service has some luck with it.
If the system and/or hard drive are badly corrupt, the same may be true. Some or all of that data may be irrevocably corrupt by now. However, there are some ways that you can attempt to recover from this situation without paying such huge fees. First, if you have access to another Mac, and both have Firewire ports, you can connect the two using Firewire target disk mode. This will mount the damaged drive as if it were an external hard drive on the second Mac, and could allow you to copy some data from the drive.
Another possibility would be to buy an external hard drive, install Mac OS X on it and boot the machine from that, then copy any data from there that you can.
In both of these cases, it may be helpful to scan the damaged drive for recoverable files using something like Data Rescue.
There are also some possible ways to repair the drive if you can't do either of those things, but any repairs at this point could potentially destroy data. I only recommend this as a last resort. Still, if all other options have failed, try repairing the drive using DiskWarrior. This can fix problems that Disk Utility (and fsck, the command-line tool that it sounds like you may have used) cannot. It is possible that DiskWarrior will be able to get the drive back in working order long enough to get the data recovered, though of course it's also possible the process will be destructive.
If none of the above work, you'll have to seek professional help.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro suddenly says no space available on start-up disk (plenty available) and USB drawing too much power (only charging phone). What's going on with my computer? No longer able to charge my iPhone 5.

    Hi, all.
Two days ago I was using my computer, a 2011 Macbook Pro, and suddenly got the error message reading "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for application memory. To avoid problems with your computer, quit any applications you are not using. Closing windows and removing files from your startup disk will also help."
I was only using Google Chrome, nothing was running in the background, and I have 443 of 449.25 GB available (this is after clean-up I conducted after receiving the error message, but probably cleaned up less than 25 GB), so there should be no shortage of space. However, the message kept popping up and I deleted a few files and eventually it went away and hasn't reappeared.
However, last night and then again this morning I have been getting the error message that my USB drive is pulling too much power and has been disable. All that was plugged in was my iPhone 5 on the charger and my computer is also on its charger, so I don't know why this would be an issue, either. I have always charged my phone this way and never had a problem until today.
I haven't been able to charge my phone since. What's going on with my computer?

Sorry ... I read but was unfortunately distracted from your original post.  You have a system that came with Lion.  The Lion that is on your system is only for your computer and cannot be downloaded from the app store again because you never purchased it officially through the App Store.
Try this for making an external USB/DVD copy of Recovery on an external disk.  internet is still required for reinstall, though, I believe: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848.  But at least you have a separate Recovery Partition if you ever need a fully new and empty internal disk.
Your assumption is incorrect. Although he may not be able to download it from the App store he can download it directly for the Apple servers using the recovery partition on his original drive.
All you have to do is start the install routine and then point the install to an external hard drive. Once the download is finished the computer will reboot to start the install. At that reboot disconnect the external drive so the install can not start. Boot the computer back into the OS on the internal hard drive, which is what will happen automatically once the external drive is disconnected. Then connect the external and copy the files from it that were downloaded. Right click on that downloaded package file and select Show contents. In the contents of that package is a file called InstallESD.DMG. Copy that file out of the package and burn it down to a DVD or USB thumb drive and you now have the Full Lion Installer. I have several of them laying around on different hard drives and 2 USB thumb drives which I have used to reinstall Lion on my 15" MBP.
Sorry OP I should of just typed this out in my first post.

As Shootist pointed out, the system uses more power.
However, initially it will reindex the hard drive for spotlight, which will slow things down temporarily.
It also must rebuild caches that eventually will speed things up.
If it has completed indexing the hard drive (no dot pulsing in the spyglass), then there might be something wrong.
Start by booting into the Recovery HD (a partition created with Lion that has Disk Utility and reinstallation options) by holding down cmd-r when you restart. You can let go when the gray screen appears.
When it boots, select Disk Utility and Repair the drive.
If that doesn't speed things up, try re-installing the OS from the same Recovery HD. It won't delete any of your files, but it has helped some people whose Macs ran slow after installing Lion.
Also, how much memory do you have? Lion needs RAM so maxing your Mac out might also help.

  • I have a late 2011 macbook pro and it wont update the firmware to 2.7, it downloads the update then says its installing it but when i go back to software update it keeps coming up saying it needs to be updated

Once it is downloaded you need to restart the computer if it does not restart automatically. When it next starts up you should note a progress bar appearing below the Apple logo. When done the computer will restart once more. The new firmware should now be installed.
