2011 MacBook Pro loose trackpad
About a few weeks ago my three-month-old MacBook Pro's trackpad started making very noticable annoying "click" sound (especially on the right side), as if something was loose underneath. I went to my local Apple store, and the genius "tightened up the screws and cleaned out the debris". He said he didn't notice any difference, however the problem persists when I tested it. He offered to replace the trackpad for me free of charge (as my Mac is still in warranty), and the problem seemed to have gone away. However when I got home, the problem arose again, this time on the left side of the trackpad. It is a tiny "click" sound when putting very little amount of pressure on the trackpad (I did not press it down fully). It is not easily noticable, but very annoying indeed. Im probably going to visit them next week again to get the things right. Anyone having the same problem??

The trackpad will "click"when pressed as a feedback that the user have clicked (same as left mouse key) on something.
The "click" occours at very low pressure when pressing left, right, center or downside the pad.
For that i assume, your trackpad work as designed.

Early 2011 MacBook Pro 17" trackpad click faulty
Off and on, my trackpad will not allow me to use the clicking function. The trackpad tracks normally but every once in awhile the clicking feels a bit different and will not function with a click. There is no problem with it allowing me to "tap to click" but that does not help me when I need to drag or select an object. I am going to take it to the Genius Bar but my fear is that the function comes and goes for different lengths of time. Currently, it just started working again but earlier today it stopped working for the better part of 2 days. This issue started at about 5 months ago but would normally only fault for a short period and I never made it to the Genius Bar because it would correct itself.
I have restored from a Time Machine backup as well as started from scratch with a clean system. Neither restores make a huge difference in fixing the issue.
If anyone has experienced something like this on their MacBook Pro did you experience a similiar feeling of a different touch or response at times with your trackpad?I have a Early 2011, but don't use the trackpad or keyboard learning how easy they get messed up (keys don't work, trackpad looses sensitivity) after a mere three years of use with my last 15".
I keep my keyboard area covered with the thin foam packaging, use a mouse and a old PC keyboard that can take the pain better. 7 years old and $4 at a thrift shop, I can throw them across the room and they still work.
$3000 machine and the keys stop working and the trackpad goes numb after 3 years, go figure. -
2011 MacBook Pro 15" Trackpad missing clicks and spontaneously releasing
Last week I received a new MacBook Pro at work. It seems to have an issue with the trackpad.
Specifically, clicks are not always recognized, and sometimes while I'm dragging a window the trackpad will release the click spontaneously, even though I haven't removed my thumb.
The problem seems to be that even though I hear and feel the tactile "click" response from the trackpad, the internal button isn't actually getting depressed. Likewise, sometimes the internal button will release early, before the tactile "click" you normally get when you remove your finger from the trackpad. If I use a firmer press, it seems to work all the time.
I did take the laptop in to the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store, but they just told me it was normal and to press harder. Now, I've been using apple laptops for a long time, and I use the Magic Trackpad on my desk, so I disagree - It definitely does not feel normal to me. I don't think I should have to remember to "press harder". I'm used to the tactile click response indicating that a click has occurred, and now I can't. I have to feel the click, and then keep pressing harder to be guaranteed that my click is noticed.

Weird Macbook Pro Unibody Trackpad problem
Okay, this has been bothering me for a while. I have a 2 year old Unibody 15" Macbook pro, with the glass trackpad. I used the laptop for a year, and it was perfect. One day I was sitting on the couch with the computer next to me and I push the trackpad only to hear a massive crunching sound. It wasn't a smooth click, it was like something was caught underneath it. It happened for about 3 months, then settled down, only coming back occasionally. Now it's back and won't go away. When I start using the MacBook it is fine, but the button is noticeably looser than my brothers 2011 Macbook Pro, and makes a quieter noise at first, then it starts sounding like a spring is underneath the trackpad sometimes, sometimes it makes a rattle when clicked, sometimes a big crunch. Most of the tip when I gently tap the trackpad, even with the littlest effort it makes a tink noise. Does it on either the left or the right side of the trackpad and alternates. I have googled and googled but can't find ANYONE with this problem. I have taken it into the local apple store equivalent (we don't have apple stores ) 3 times. They have opened it up 3 times and can't see anything wrong. The guy said they re attached the cables to the trackpad, and it worked great for about a week, then it has been worse than ever. That was in January. I can't currently take the laptop back as I have school, and probably can't in the holidays as the shop was damaged in an earthquake (Christchurch :P )
Is there anyway to fix this? I might just try and do a DIY, I've fixed 2 xbox's with Red rings before so believe in DIY fixing
And no, the noise is not the hard drive sudden motion sensor lock thing. Sounds very differentVery weird. Try using the macbook without the battery, remove the battery, connect the power adapter only and use it to see if problem persists.

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro which has been running slow for a while. After looking at responses to similar problems I have downloaded and run EtreCheck. Please can someone help me with what it all means.
Thanks in advance.

WIP: My adventures with 2011 MacBook Pro and Windows 8.1 including seconday HDD
So I've just lost about 3 days of my life trying to install Windows 8.1 (my preferred) operating system on a Late 2011 MacBook Pro.
I feel that I've learnt a lot and hopefully can share my experiences to speed a few of you along the process. This is my own experience please let me know if anything I have documented is not true and I will revise for completeness
What my initial goal was to have a dual HD set up with an SSD running both Mac OSX and Windows 8.1 (via Bootcamp) with a 2ndry HD in places of the optical (DVD) drive for shared storage.
I have tried all/some of the following:
Win 8.1 ISO from the MS site: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media
USB created using Rufus for Bios and EFI boot
DVD created using Windows 8.1 (can't remember how)
Yosemite USB created using: Create a bootable installer for OS X Mavericks or Yosemite - Apple Support
There are 2 main options when installing Windows:
Bios
EFI
Both have different pros and cons, which Im going to try and document here:
Bios
Full driver support via Bootcamp download
Slower (mainly boot time, not by much though)
Not quite as "native" as some may prefer
Limited number of partitions??
EFI
Fast
Native
Does not support video driver properly (no dual screen)
Audio does not work (says Failed to start device)
Here are some random facts I know
Windows DVD will only boot from optical drive when connected internally. If plugged in via external USB it stops at black screen with flashing cursor and doesnt progress
Using 5HT-2a's method on Redit (see below) and the EFI install, I get the Cx0000005 cannot find source media error and cannot install
Hacking the Bootcamp tool to create a Windows 8 ISO with all the drivers works (see link below) but when using it in EFI it crashes repeatedly during install so you never can complete the process (I think this is due to the video drivers) and therefore can't run Bootcamp assistant thus get proper trackpad support
Using lion10's method (below) for tweaking a standard Mac partitioned HD I was able to get past the cannot install Windows error ("windows cannot be installed to this disk. the selected disk is of the GPT partition style") and install Windows using EFI
Best guides/links I have found:
lion10's method:The ultimate way to install Windows 8.x in (U)EFI mode on Apple systems
5HT-2a's method: http://www.reddit.com/r/mac/comments/2fy3be/by_popular_demand_my_better_than_boo tcamp_guide/
skipsizemore's method: Can't install Windows 8 x64 on late 2013 MBP with1TB SSD
Bootcamp drivers 2 versions depending on Mac:
Older Macs: Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5621
Newer Macs (most 2013+): Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5640
Bootcamp Assistant Hack for USB creation on older Macs: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1680652There is an additional parameter required if you are using Yosemite during code signing (-deep I think, but cant remember)What I ended up doing (so far)
I'm not 100% sure of the state of my disk when I got to where I ended up but I had previous completed the GDisk and DISKPART methods from 5HT-2a and lion10's methods. I was using a 128gb SSD
I then decided to start from the top (as I had previous installed Win 8.1 on the original HD using DVD)
So I ran the Yosemite installer (via USB) and used the partition tab in Disk Utility to repartition the disk into 2 partitions, 1 for OSX and 1 (ExFat/NTFS) for Windows
I then booted in Bios (Windows, not EFI) using the Windows 8.1 DVD using the DVD plugged in internally (wouldnt work using USB enclosure)
Installed Windows to the partition I created (probably the 4th one)
After Windows installed, ran the Bootcamp set up program
Reran Yosemite installer and installed Yosemite
Swapped out the optical drive for a larger HD (7200rpm) and formatted it with HFS+ -
Early 2011 MacBook Pro incredibly slow after installing Mavericks
I'm really hoping someone can help me out. As per the subject line, I installed Mavericks on day one (and learned my lesson!).
Since installing Mavericks my MacBook Pro runs incredibly slow. If I open the Mail App and Safari - it almost grinds to a halt. I have the "Memory Clean" App which I now have to run constantly (it appears to help a little) and I try to only launch one app at a time where possible, but it's not really pratical.
As an aside, my MacBook ran really well with Mountain Lion, so there's little doubt to my mind that Mavericks is the culprit.
I'd be eternally grateful for any help & advice :-)
I spotted other people advise running EtreCheck, here are my results:

CleanMyMac is crapware.
Crapware is anything that purports to "optimize", "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac. These apps are unnecessary, poorly written, overpriced (if they were free, they'd still be overpriced), and harmful. The people who sell this stuff know this, but they keep selling it because people keep buying it. They can damage your OS and be difficult to uninstall.
I would try to uninstall it, but if that fails, you may have to erase your HD and do a clean install. -
I spilled on my 2011 macbook pro, will not charge
I spilled hot chocolate on my 2011 macbook pro, and it only got along the bottom front left edge of the computer, and not into any ports or on my charger. Charger was plugged in at the time. Computer shut off a couple of minutes after, so I restarted it,and the fan was running very loudly. \the trackpad was a little bit messed up, so I did an SMP reset and the computer is now fine. However, my charger will not work. When plugged into the laptop, it doesn't charge and the light doesn't come on, though it has no visible damage. Is the problem with the laptop or charger? Could the computer have damaged he charger at the time of the spill? Could the hot chocolate have seeped into the seam on the bottom of my computer? It was only wet for about 15 seconds.
Normally, if electronic device suffers from the accident of liquid spill, you should shut down them and plug off power supply immediately to avoid possible electricity broken. In fact, it is not easy to detect visible damage by visual look. In regard to your example, i mean hot chocolate actually penetratres electronic component inside your computer and cause the fault for hardware system. What you need to do is remove the computer case and try to dry internal electrical circuit out. If this method doesn't work, you should bring to repair service. Good luck !

Late 2011 MacBook Pro 15 - Slow and Freezes
Good Morning.
This is MBP is running slowly and freezes, particularly if watching video, but is sluggish even opening applications from finder.
The MBP was taken to a apple service provider with the complaint of very sluggish and a strange graphic issue (The graphics were garbled at times - there is a known issue with logic boards.) a picture of the graphics was provided.
The service provider stated that the HDD drive failed the SMART test but graphics passed his test. When questioned if he was comfortable that nothing was wrong with graphics based on picture he stated that he advised I take it to the apple store. Which I did. There the MBP passed both the graphics and HDD test. based on the photograph the no less than 3 geniuses agreed the logic board was bad, though it wasn't the "typical" failure. The genius bar was given the information about the apple service provider and slowness. All of that was entered into the comments.
The MBP was sent to apples repair depot where the logic board and magsafe board was replaced. and the MBP was returned with assurances that all was well.
Though the graphics issue has not reoccurred the speed is not any better and may be worse. (in excess of a minute fifteen boot, noticeable delay opening browsers or menus).
Additonal information:
When provided to the apple service provider (and presumably the apple store) the computer contained the original 4gb ram. and had never been opened. The ram showing on this report is crucial, contains the mac logo and was installed because the service provider said 4gb was low, so when the computer returned and was still slow it was tried - it seems to have made no difference).
The HDD failed to secure erase the freespace on HDD 3 times prior to repair with the message "could not create temp file" after running overnight.
I've reset PRAM and SMC and run trough various "why is my mac slow" guides to no avail.
The anti virus was also added post repair to look for any thing malicious.
Help please.

Apr 27, 2015, 10:02:50 AM Self test - passed
Apr 26, 2015, 08:15:18 AM /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/firefox_2015-04-26-081518_[redacted].cpu_resour ce.diag [Click for details]"This is not a retina 15" - though I just turned off the graphics switching to see if that made any difference."
That recall is not just for the Retina model:
From:
https://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/
Affected Models
MacBook Pro (15-inch Early 2011)
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011)
I'm aware of that recall it is the "known problem" I mentioned in the original post, however the linked story RE: Yosemite referenced retina MacBook Pros
There is an issue in retina MBPs and Yosemite:
http://www.macnn.com/articles/14/11/04/several.support.threads.discussing.issue. related.to.gpu.switching/
"Regardless of symptoms, the issue has been traced to switching to the discrete GPU from the integrated GPU.
Read more: http://www.macnn.com/articles/14/11/04/several.support.threads.discussing.issue. related.to.gpu.switching/#ixzz3YWcK80s9"
So I was not sure if this was discussing a separate issue, that is why I mentioned it was not a Retina.
"Does "disk warrior" report anything that the apple store test would not?"
The Apple Store would run the Apple System Diagnostic (ASD).
Re:
http://www.dannydullin.com/apple-service-diagnostic-asd-reference-list/
The trick when you take it to the Apple Store is to make your computer repeat the failure that you see. It actually would be a good idea to get it to fail just before your appointment. Don't shut it down just take it to them frozen.
Then you can hand the genius the MBP and say, "This is what happens."
Actually a suggestion of another senior member around here. I'd credit her if I could remember who it was.
They ran two test one was a video test and the other was a hard drive test "quick apple store" that said it "randomly checked disk" or something close to that.
I can only hope to get it to fail right before going. - only real problem is that considering the apple disclaimer about their responsibility for your data, there is absolutely no way they are getting it with our data on it. But if I can get it to fail I'll let them see it before wiping it... I mean the sluggishness is obvious so at least they can see that.
I do appreciate the ideas. There were a number of people there when I dropped it off the first time, one of them was on her third logic board. Another on the second. -
Late 2011 MacBook Pro can't boot after Yosemite install
After installing Yosemite on this late 2011 MacBook Pro it stops about a third of the way into booting up. It displays a null sign. I can boot into recovery disk, or external HD (I don't have a backup of this system, but can boot from my MacBook Air's clone) if I use option-R or just option at startup. It won't go into Safe Mode. From the ext HD I have reinstalled Yosemite on the MBP, but it still freezes mid-boot. Disk Utility repair permissions, repair HD, zap PRAM, SMC, I've tried all of these (from reading advice here, and PM from Ogelthorpe). I have copied the Etre Report below. Suggestions?

1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
If you are preparing an external or a non-startup drive, then open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
7. Quit DU when it is finished and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard. Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. -
Constant kernel panic on my Late-2011 MacBook Pro, help!
Hi all,
Okay, so whenever I'm running heavy tasks on my computer (rendering in Premiere, gaming etc.), after awhile my computer panics . By awhile, it ranges from 2 minutes up to about 2 hours. I'm not entirely sure what's causing it, but looking at the log, it apparently has something to do with "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement".
Please let me know what sections of the panic log I should post, I'm not exactly sure whether or not it gives away personal information or anything, haha. Oh, and I'm running 10.8.4.
Cheers!

There ya go! -
I know this question has been asked before. My problem is similar to what is mentioned here but I hope someone can explain the error log attached below and hopefully I'm able to find a DIY solution without much cost.
I'm using a early 2011 MBP with Yosemite installed. Not too long ago, I manually upgraded my hard disk to a OWC SSD.
Recently my MBP screen went into white blank screen AGAIN while I was working on a python script which crawls the web with about 10 threads. I used to run this same script without *much* problems before yosemite (ie: i encounter the same problem with Mavericks but not so frequent. I never install mountain Lion before so I can't comment on that. I came from Snow Leopard to Maverick and Yosemite). Other times, my MBP will go into the same white blank screen while doing other misc stuff and this usually doesn't involved me watching any HD video.
A couple of solutions that get my MBP up and running are:
1) I hard shutdown and bootup my MBP. After the apple logo it freezes at the white blank screen. While it stays in the white screen, I will unplug my power adapter and wait for my battery to drain out completely. Once the battery is completely drained out, I will plug in my power adapter and I'm definitely able to boot up my MBP without any problem the first time. I did the same and thus I'm able to post this question.
2) Bootup into safe mode and restart. It works once
3) I have also disabled dynamic switching of graphics card but that didn't work.
Below is my error report. I don't quite understand it. I hope someone explain to me?

Thunderbolt Bus: MacBook Pro, Apple Inc., 22.1Hi all, I had many problems with the GPU of my Early 2011 MacBook Pro and the MLB was replaced three times so far. The first time was about a year ago and I went to an authorised retailer and not to an Apple Store. They first incorrectly diagnosed the problem and told me that they had to replace the hard drive. After that, they still did not really find the problem but said that the MLB had to be replaced, which I did given that my computer was only two years old and running fabulously. About a month later the problem reappeared and the MLB was replaced again, this time by using the 3-months guarantee of the MLB. The first time I had to pay. A few weeks ago I again had problems (the computer was very hot and fans were running at maximum speed most of the time although I was running only Mail and Preview). I'm, I took it directly to the Apple Store and after about five minutes of looking at it they decided to replace in the MLB for free. There is no official replacement program but I think Apple has now recognised the issue and they don't charge you anything if you had the issue before (they call this a repeat repair). So good luck if you haven't solved your problem yet. If the problem reappears there should be no problem.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above. Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough. It is never necessary or helpful to post more than about 100 lines. "The more, the better" is not the rule here.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Can I hook up an early 2011 macbook pro to a new iMac AND another thunderbolt display?
I want to get a new iMac, and I have an early 2011 macbook pro. Can I use a two-way thunderbolt cable to hook these two up? If so, will I still be able to use full functionality on both as I move windows to and from one of them? (Like, I use my macbook track pad to move a safari window over to my iMac, and then I can either use my iMac mouse or my macbook's trackpad to do things with that safari window.
ALSO, is it possible to hook up an additional thunderbolt display to all of this? Basically my end-goal is to have a macbook pro hooked up to an iMac with an additional thunderbolt display, that's my "dream set-up" which will make a lot of stuff that I do a lot easeir and less crowded on one moniter.no the thunderbold display thing would let you use the imac as a monitor for the macbook apart from acting the role of display the imac would be dorment so a very pricy monitor

2011 MacBook Pro Constantly Crashing
Hi guys,
So I have a mid 2011 MacBook Pro. Up until recently it has worked great, only the occasional app crash here and there. But lately various apps (especially safari) have started crashing all the time. Now, not only do apps frequently crash, the whole computer crashes, several times a day! What happens is I will be going about my business on my laptop and everything seems to be working fine, then out of nowhere it will abruptly shut off and restart without warning. When it restarts I am greeted with the grey screen that says "Your computer restarted because of a problem etc. etc." and then turns back on.
After going through and trying all the "standard" diagnostics such as resetting PRAM and verifying and repairing disk permissions without success, I am left without any idea what to do. Browsing online forums like this only yields a hundred different people with a hundred different solutions, all for the SAME problem. So I decided to go the more drastic route, making a backup, formatting the hard drive, but manually migrate my documents and files, as well as what I consider my "safe" apps. I did NOT restore from the cloned backup, only copied over important files as well as my safe apps, because obviously restoring everything would put my computer back in its original "bad" state. This has not fixed the problem. I still am having frequent crashing of apps such as safari, as well as the entire computer crashing.
Here is the log of one of the most recent computer crashes:

BTW do these constitute "kernel panics"? I have been reading about the concept of a kernel panic, and was thinking that my problem does not qualify as a true kernel panic since when the crash happens, the computer completely reboots spontaneously. It doesn't freeze first or display the message telling me I need to restart my computer.
I do have AppleCare on my computer, but live 2 hour away from the nearest Apple store.
Thanks for any help!
