2011 Macbook Pro powers off - need advice

Hi there
I have a macbook pro that switches off randomly (happens sometimes when i move/transport it), and sometimes it only turns on when plugged in. When not plugged in and i press the power button to switch on i can hear the machine running for about 2-3 sec and then shuts off again. I also noticed that if i reset my SMC (holding down Cmd, option, shift and power) it does switch on usually without the need of it being plugged in -  however the date and time needs to be set everytime and Im sure there is a better way than resetting my SMC every time my MacBook decides its time to die on me again. I am guessing the fault lies with a faulty motherboard or battery but im not sure. Im about to open my MacBook for the first time yet Id like to avoid it if I can.
I doubt its a software issue although I have installed bootcamp and played a few games here and there that might have caused the machine to become quite hot.
Has anybody experienced this before or have any advice on this?
Regards

  • Early 2011 MacBook Pro shutting off all by itself

Early 2011 MacBook Pro 11" shutting off all by itself recently.
I had the logic board replaced 11 months ago because it started to shut off more and more until it refused to boot up again.
Now I am going through the same problem. Is this common?

    OK, in that case:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
Upgrading to Lion or Mountain Lion will not solve the problem.

  • My 2011 macbook pro shuts off all the time!

My 2011 macbook pro started shutting off with increasing frequency. It was very frustrating. I installed mavericks and now it seems to shut off about every 5 minutes! Only if I'm working, if it's streaming it seems fine. I think it would be impossible to actually get work done. I've read many others are having the same problem and taking theirs in for costly ineffective repairs. I can't afford to pay Apple to "chase it's tail".I may just go PC. Has anyone found out what the issue really is and how to fix it?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.

  • Early 2011 Macbook Pro shuts off when charger unplugged.  Worked fine yesterday.

    Hi,
I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro, which I purchased brand new; it's just over one year old.  Yesterday the laptop held a charge no problem for 6 hours or more.  Today, when I disconnect it from the charger it goes to sleep.  When I plug it back in and press the power button it wakes up, and I can use it.
This cannot be a battery issue, since it was holding a charge without trouble yesterday.  Does this appear to be a serious issue?  My one year warranty expired 2 months ago yesterday, and I had forgot to purchase AppleCare.  Sigh.  It almost seems like surgically-planned obsolecense or punishment for not purchasing AppleCare.
I would immensely appreciate any help/suggestions on this.
    Thanks.

  • Selling Macbook Pro.. Need Advice on how to erase info but leave apps!

Ok so I should mention i'm not the original owner of this macbook pro but bought it very shortly after they did, and recieved it in mint condition. It is a late 2012 model, the 13 inch retina display one with mountain lion. When the original owner sold it to me, he pretty much just deleted his old account so that I could still use microsoft office, the only extra programs on there. As far as I know these are the only extra apps or programs that the macbook came with, and they are the only ones I want to retain since they would increase the selling price! If it were not for these I would just do a full reset but since that would delete them, I am here trying to figure out what to do and what risks are associated with doing it. The problem is that most of the information I have read online keeps pointing me in the direction of a full reset, meaning the apps would also be erased. I want to learn how to do what he did, but get a better insight on it since I have more information, browser history, data, etc. on the computer at this point than he did. If I have an external HD, I can just back up my music and documents on there right? I could care less about pictures since there are only a few, and the browser history I can just delete also and they would not have access right? So far I have not backed anything up since Time Capsule is still confusing to me. I am not sure if the external drive I have is compatible with mac files and I read that time capsule only works with some air port or something? As you can see I need someone to show me the light so any help or insight is greatly appreciated! Sorry if I did not include enough info on the product, if you need more just let me know

In additional to the Apple support article Kappy provided, see Thomas Reed's guide:
The Safe Mac » How to prepare your Mac for sale
I'm not speaking for Kappy, but reformatting your HDD will erase Microsoft Office, as well as all the contents on the drive.
You would need the original Office CD and product key if you wished to pass it onto the buyer.
There's no legal or safe alternative.

  • MacBook Pro keeps crashing, need advice

    Hello mac lovers/experts/techies.
I have a MacBook Pro, purchased in December 2010, that is causing me a whole lot of heartache, headache, and frustration.
It has been 'crashing', consistently, since I first bought it.  By 'crashing', I mean, freezing up entirely.  Non-responsive machine that can only be revived by a forced restart. This happens while doing a variety of activities: using final cut pro, playing starcraft, watching videos on Quicktime or VLC, browsing the internet.  Most commonly, the screen will freeze and the whole laptop becomes unresponsive.
I went to the mac store where I purchased the laptop almost immediately. Having owned a macbook pro previously, I knew this was an uncommon issue. They ran some diagnostics, did a few system updates, looked up the crash logs (that appeared unalarming), and sent me home.
    The problem persisted.
I went back, they kept my laptop overnight to run more diagnostics. They suggested I reinstall OSx.
I reinstalled OSx, the crashing continued.
So... I phoned the customer support number, they ran diagnostics over the phone with me, made a couple minor changes, and sent me on my way. They suggested that if it crashes again, I should do an erase/reinstall.
My laptop crashed within minutes of that phone call ending. I am now backing up my system and preparing for an erase/reinstall.
My question is: how many times do I have to deal with customer service/going to the apple store/running diagnostics before they give me a replacement machine?  It's incredibly frustrating to spend $2000+ on a laptop that is completely unreliable, as mine has proven itself to be.  Has anyone encountered similar issues?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had a similar experience with a MacBook Pro (i7) earlier in the year.  I tried everything including several reinstalls of the OS.  It was the hard disk and replacement of that did the trick: back to my stable machine.  The SMART information in Disk Utility reported no problems.  If you think the hard disk could be the problem, (apart from backing up data) it might be an idea to run one of the other applications that check SMART status, like Volitans Software, SMART utility or SMARTReader on the CoreCode website.  There is a SMART status app on the Mac App Store which might best be ignored.

  • Just Got a New MacBook Pro...need advice.

As mentioned, I just got a new MacBook Pro.  I have enjoyed creating videos on my older machines vis imovie.  However, I've hit a bunch of limitations in that program and would like to expand my options.  I'm considering Final Cut Pro X since the cost has dramatically came down.  My question is whether my new machine is really cable of handling it's features or not.  I've noted my specs below.  Please advise.
Also, considering I go with Final Cut Pro X, are there other programs I might consider to further the opportunity for design options and editing?

  • Macbook Pro powers off when on battery power

Help! My MBP 17" now powers off after a couple of minutes on battery power. When this happens, trying to boot again, the system will power off again while loading the OS. The only way to get the MBP to boot then is to plug in the AC adaptor.
I've reset the SMC and reconditioned the battery. Both the OS and the battery think the battery is fully charged. This didn't happen before upgrading to Leopard.

I believe the color of the magsafe was green and that it wasn't charging. (The MBP thought the battery was at 96%.)
Here's the profile after I got to work and plugged in my magsafe (which is a second magsafe I keep at work), the color is amber:

My mid 2011 macbook pro switched off while I was charging my iphone 5 with it (was using belkin cable since NY apple cable started ripping open at the ends and now it won't work).
This happened 2 days ago. I browsed through some of the community members having the same problem but none of it works for me. If I recall the macbook has 60% chsrge . I tried connecting my charger to the laptop it only lights up with a light green color that's hardly noticeable. Moreover none of the keys work it seems. Please help

  • My Early 2011 Macbook Pro Continues to shut off at random

I own an early 2011 Macbook Pro, 4GB RAM, intel 3000 384mb graphics, 250gb SATA hd. I now have OS X 10.8.2 and my macbook randomly shuts off and its not just once or twice a day. It is more along the lines of over 20 times a day. Can somebody give me some advice to resolve this issue? I used mackeeper and ran every scan and I went to disk utility and repaired the drive. I don't know what else i could possibly do. This issue is making me wish i never bought this mac. The macbook is great and all but now i can't even use it because it shuts off at random. I can't enjoy the macbook if i have to use it in fear that it will shut off at any moment. Can someone please help me with this issue quickly?

If you have Apple Care or are still under warranty, give them a call and get a case number.  Otherwise, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

What cable do I need for a full migration from a 2011 MacBook Pro to a new current one-wireless migration way too slow.?

All you need is an Ethernet cable.
Just plug it into both machines. Don't bother with a crossover cable, just a plain old Ethernet cable will do. The Ethernet ports on the Macs are smart and will adjust appropriately.
