2011 MacBook progress bar on startup, increased boot time (15-20mins)

A few months ago I was given a MacBook through my school, and it's been operating fine up until now.
Within the last week, I have noticed extended load time for OSX and a grey loading bar below the usual apple logo and spinning ring on startup.
Luckily for me, I have bootcamped this MacBook with Windows 7, and am using that operating system to write this message.
I did some research and found that often what caused the grey loading bar are problems with the hard disk, which can be solved by doing a disk repair with the OSX Install CD, but when this is done, i recieve the error "Incorrect number of thread records," and it tells me that the utility is unable to repair the disk.
I need to use OSX at school, because it's where all of my schoolwork is stored, and i'd like to be able to use it at a reasonable speed.
Any help would be much appreciated.
John

The disk may have a few bad sectors, probably where the OS files are stored. You can try to repair it using a third party utility such as Disk Warrior. But be sure to backup everything first.

  • Progress bar on startup

    Hi Guys,
I keep getting a progress bar on startup. Not every time, but at least every few days. I've had this before since installing Mavericks and eventually my drive was not reparable in disk utility and I had to do a clean install and start from scratch.
I'm using a Macbook Pro 2012 with a Sandisk Ultra Plus SSD.
One thing I've noticed is that it seems to happen when I shutdown and close the lid of the macbook overnight and leave it unplugged. I'm not sure if this is a coincidence or not.
I'm not sure exactly what is causing this issue and I can't seem to find what it is from the log files. I've pasted my log file in below, hopefully there's someone out there who can see what it is!

  • Oracle automatic startup at boot time

    Hello all,
I need one help.I need oracle db server automatic startup at boot time in solaris 10 environment.
I need to know also location of ORATAB .
    Thanks in advance.

Oh no, it is not very urgent.
In a forum of volunteers there is no such thing as 'very urgent', and using 'very urgent' is considered insulting and rude.
It is even more insulting as you expect to do me what you refuse to do: consult the documentation.
As you failed to mention a version I can't even look up the documentation, nor will I do that: I'm not going to stand in voluntarily to do for either people for free what they get paid for: their work

  • Progress bar during startup - Odd Issue

    What's the problem:
Upon startup my iMac (early 2009, Mountain Lion) shows a grey progress bar that takes approx. 20 Minutes to complete and then the machine shuts down.
What have I done before the issue occured:
Cleaning up cache files and deleting several programms that I wasn't using any more.
What's the setup of my machine:
I have one physical harddrive that contains 3 logical partitions: One is of course the Macintosh HD (HFS+), one for data (HFS+), and one Bootcamp (FAT32) partition.
What have I tried so far:
When booting into Single User mode I ran the fsck (and fsck_hfs) command which quits after 3 unsuccessfull attempts. The only error message shown is
"Incorrect Number Of Thread Records (4, someNumber)". I tried this at least 10 times now and the behaviour is always the same, except from the number shown in the thread records message.
When booting into the recovery partition disk utility shows me the 3 partitions on my HD but shows the Macintosh HD greyed out. When checking the HD it finished without problems, when just checking the Macintosh HD it aborts with an error. Same applies when I try to fix the partition.
I tried to reinstall Mac OS but the Macintosh HD is not shown in the target disks for installation. I also tried to repartition the disk without any success.
    What's odd about this issue:
First of all, I can boot into Windows (BootcamP) without any issues and work there.
Also, when in singel user mode, I can run the 'du' command which shows me all files on my Macintosh HD so the partition itself still sems to be intact.
    What might be a solution:
I've have come along some comments that said DiskWarrior could fix more issues then Disk Utility but I not yet there to spend 100+ € for it.
Any other suggestions from you on how to get Mac OS back to work would be highly appreciated.

Thanks for your replies and proposed solutions. Unfortunately none of them worked.
@Alberto: Pressing the "D" button upon startup, does not launch the hardware test. Actually nothing realy happens for approx. 60 seconds before the machine starts the boot volume.
@Linc: I'm not able to erase the OS X boot volume as disk utility tells me it's missing it's mount point.
@romainst: As far as I remember I was still under 10.8.2. So far I have tried to repair the OS X partition at least 25 times without any changes or a chance to get this thing mounted.
I wouldn't mind erasing the Mac OS partition and reinstalling it as it only holds systems files and some applications that I could easily reinstall. Still the machine is preventing me from doing so as it will not let me mount this partition. This is becoming increasingly frustrating as the only way out seems to erase the entire HD and start over from scratch - if this is possible at all. Despite the time wasted I would also loose some of my data on the respective partition as I don't have a backup for the entire data partition.

  • IMac first shows progress bar on startup and then won't start up at all!

    Hi,
My iMac's somewhat ill I'm afraid. When I power it up, the Apple gong goes and I see the grey Apple logo appear. Few seconds later an progress bar shows up and it doesn't fill, in a minute it'll just disappears and the spinning thing under the logo appears. I've been waiting for over an hour and still nothing happened. I've tried force-powering it off and boot it up again, but still the same results, this is very very very annoying, especially since I don't know what to do at all about this expect for a complete clean install, but that'll be the last option I want, because all my photo's are on it, etc.
I've installed, an complete clean install, of Snow Leopard a month or two ago, and yesterday I powered the computer off the regular way.
Thanks a lot in advance you guys!
    EDIT
Another weird thing going on: I have my hard drive configured in two partition, one for Windows (sorry, needed to run AutoCad) and one for Mac OS. Now when I start up with the option button I get to see the two partitions and their names. My Mac drive now has got a different name, it's the same name, but with a " 1" behind it.
When I select the partition on Windows Vista, it now shows these disturbing folders:

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Boot from your install disc and run Disk Utiity to see if there are errors on the startup disk that need repairing.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
If you cannot boot from your install disc, try booting in Safe Mode
    What is Safe Mode
*" because all my photo's are on it, etc."*
If you can get the iMac to boot normally I suggest you back up those photos and any other important data to an external source ASAP in case there's a problem.
No idea why you are seeing those folders in Windows. Boot from your install disc and see what's going on.

  • Progress bar on startup after installation is complete

On both MacBook Pros I have, I installed Yosemite without issues.  However, once the installation was completed successfully, and every time after that, upon startup when the Apple logo appears, there is now a grey progress bar which fills up quickly and then the desktop appears.  Is this normal?

It's a bug of Lion. The same is happening to me. After turning off the computer, the gray bar appears and the login screen. Then i don´t have wifi or bootcamp partition. I have to reboot. I hope Apple fix it soon.

  • Is progress bar on startup normal?

During startup after a complete shutdown, a progress bar appears while files are loading.  Is this normal for Lion?  Did not see it in Leopard.  Curious because two things happen during startup: automatic login does not work (minor issue) and monitor resolution defaults to highest resolution rather than resolution set in Preferences.

  • Mac displays spinning wheel and progress bar at startup.

    Ok, here's the story:
My account password wasn't being recognized. Since I couldn't access my desktop, I tried the resetpassword command in terminal (in OS X Utilities through Command + R) but it didn't work. I restarted my Mac and it displayed a progress bar and spinning wheel. When the progress bar finished, the spinning wheel kept spinning and it wouldn't stop. Each time I boot the Mac, it does it again. I tried doing repair disk using disk utility (through OS X Utilities) but it said that it couldn't be be fixed. I even tried resetting the PRAM.
I want to know if it's possible to recover my files through OS X Utilities... i'm really frustrated because it's the second time i've lost my files.

Try to boot up into safe mode, see if that does anything for you.

  • Progress bar at startup, then shuts down immediately, during progress bar

It started when my iMac started running a little slower then usual, so i decided to restart it just incase something wasnt working properly,
then when the startup apple came up a grey progress bar comes up underneath, loads to approximately 15% then restarts the progress bar,
and then the whole system shuts down.
Any ideas on what to do? Or just get apple to check it out?

    WorriedUser wrote:
Yes, i already read this, but the problem is, it wont turn on at all, it gets to the startup then shuts down after the progress bar is no more then 10-15%
OK, then it's time to take it in to have it serviced at an Apple Store or AASP.

  • 9iAS R2 Automatic Startup at Boot time on Windows

How to successfully start the 9iAS R2 Application Server at boot time.
Many of you are still struggling with the problem of 9iAS R2 not automatically starting up properly when your system is restarted. I've been fighting this issue for several weeks and have found the problems, and pitfalls, involved with fixing it. It really is a race condition of things trying to start up before something it depends on is fully functioning, or some application starting out of sequence.
There is a bug associated with this problem; BUG 2511270 ( 9IASV2 Need Ability to Restart All Components in Instance After a Reboot). The bug report itself has very little useful information in it other than to say it doesn't work, and manually starting the components is the only known fix. If you're like me. this isn't a good enough answer.
    Your mileage may vary.
My configuration has a 9.2.0.1 customer database, and a 9.0.1.3.1 infrastructure database that is also the application server database, including portals, all installed on the same system which is a Pentium 4, Windows 2000 machine, with 1.5GB of memory. I only use a single LISTENER, which runs out of the 9.2 DB ORACLE_HOME.
Chapter 5 (Starting and Stopping the Application Server) of the Oracle9i Application Server Administrator's Guide shows all of the commands necessary, in the proper order, to manually start the infrastructure and application server. Unfortunately, there is also some incorrect information in this document.
Part 1c in the section Starting an Infrastructure Using Commands on Windows, using SQLPlus to connect to and start the database, does not work unless oracle.exe is already running (which means that you recently shutdown the database by command, not with "services>stop"). If your system is rebooting, oracle.exe is not running. This exact same information is documented in the Database Administrators Guide, Chapter 4, Starting a Database. If you don't have these manuals handy the offending commands are as follows:
    ORACLE_HOME\bin\sqlplus /nologsql> connect sys/password_for_sys as sysdba
    sql> startup
    sql> quit
Since we can't put some variant of the above in a command script to manually start the databases and wait for it to open, the only option left is to let the databases come up in "automatic" mode when the system boots, and run the remaining commands when they are open. If your system is like mine, that can take several minutes, even after you've logged on and gotten your first cup of coffee.
If you set up a command script to run at startup, you don't have any control over when the script gets run, more than likely, in this case, before the databases are open. Unfortunately, Microsoft does not have anything resembling a sleep (timer, wait, delay, etc) command that can be used in a script. There may be something somewhere, but I can't find it. So I wrote one in Perl, which does have a sleep command. You can use anything you have available to you that will function as needed. We obtained our Perl distribution from http://aspn.activestate.com/ASPN/Perl.
The next issue has to do with starting the Oracle Internet Directory. The documentation shows two commands to execute, but in reality, only the first one is required, it automatically takes care of the second one. Refer to the command file below for the correct one.
The last issue deals with running the dcmctl commands. If you run these commands one at a time in a command window, you won't notice anything askew. If you run them, as shown, in a script, they will stop execution of the script when they complete, and there will be no indication that anything wrong has happened. The CMD.exe still exists, it just isn't running. They must be run in there own cmd command as shown below.
Now, let's review the steps necessary to get all this to work.
Put the two scripts shown below in there target directories and edit any necessary changes for your system.
In Start>Settings>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services set the OracleServiceSID's and the OracleOraHomeTNSListener to Automatic Startup Type. All other Oracle* services should be set to Manual.
In Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Scheduled Tasks double click on the Add Scheduled Task item,
    select Next,
Browse to where your startup script resides,
    double click the file name,
    select "When my computer starts",
    select Next,
Enter a user name and password (that has ORA_DBA privileges)
    select Next, then Finish.
Uncomment the first exit in the iasStartup.cmd script.
    Reboot your system.
Compare the database open time stamp in each database alert log to the time recorded in the iasStartup.log file to determine you first time delay. Add 10-20 seconds or more to this difference just to be safe. If you add services at a later time, this number may need to be increased.
Edit the iasStartup.cmd file to include this time delay for the first sleep command and comment out the first exit command.
    Reboot your system.
After several minutes, all infrastructure and application server processes should be up and running. You can check this in several ways; Look at the log file to see if all commands were run, Look at the Windows Task Manager to see if all expected tasks are running, Look at Services to see what is running. Finally, you can look at the Infrastructure Enterprise Manager Website and click on each instance to determine the current status of each system component. On mine, the component Portal:portal:7779 always shows as down but in reality it is functioning.
The following command script only starts the minimum set of processes that I require. Your requirements may be different so refer to the documentation for additional commands.
    Enjoy.

    New information:
When I originally wrote this, the command script worked as advertised. That was yesterday. I've since had to add the following lines just BEFORE the call to start the oidmon.
    echo Starting as9inf oidctl >> iasStartup.log
    %ORACLE_HOME%\bin\oidctl server=oidldapd configset=0 instance=1 start
Sometimes me thinks that Oracle reconfigures itself at night when I'm not watching.
    Enjoy.

  • Menu Bar Icons disappear/Long boot times for apps

This is what my menu bar looks like. Also, it is taking forever for apps to open and boot time is longer than normal. Any Idea what could be the problem? I already deleted any 3rd party app I recently downloaded and deleted all files I recently downloaded as well. Let me know what you all think. Thanks

I don't think that is the issue, as I do not even have that option in my Desktop & Screen Saver preferences. Below is what I see.
Also, notice the forward and back arrows in the top let, as well as the + and - icons are missing. This is how all of my windows are. Any other ideas? Any other info I can provide to help?
    Thanks

  • U410 increased boot time .

Hello , i own a lenovo u410 .. like 1-2 months back my machines boot time increased a lot .. that time i found that the ssd was not working properly so got it replaced .
Now however the boot time has again increased, the ssd works as intel rapid storage technology also works .
I dont know why the boot time has shot up so much to like 2 minutes , earlier it was max 30 seconds .
    Any solutions ?

The disk may have a few bad sectors, probably where the OS files are stored. You can try to repair it using a third party utility such as Disk Warrior. But be sure to backup everything first.

  • Help: grey screen with progress bar at startup, no success repairing in disk utility

I got my MacBook pro in December 2011 and never had an issue with it until this same thing happened in February 2013.
Basically, what happens is the computer starts to run really slowly, so I forced shut down. When I tried to power it back on, I can't get past a grey screen with a progrerss bar that doesn't move for about a minute, and then the computer just shuts back off. I tried to some research to figure out how to fix it myself (grateful for my ipad as a back-up computer) but I'm afraid I'm stuck now.
I tried running disk utility from recovery mode to verify and repair disk, but I only got errors saying "disk utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files." When this all happened in February, I bought an external HD for the Genius Bar dude to back up my files and do whatever he did over the course of 3 days to repair my system. Apparently it was only a temporary fix. However, like an idiot, even with all of that hassle, I never set up Time Machine (I know, I know, spare the lecture. I definitely will this time around). I'm really not too concerned about the data on my drive because most of my important stuff is on USB storage/my work computer. However, there are pictures on there that I'd really like to salvage.
So, before I do the walk of shame back into the Apple Store, can anyone offer a guide for saving my stuff and repairing my hard drive myself? And, if I have a worst case scenario on my hands, how expensive will it be to buy/install a new hard drive?...or just how to prevent it from happening in the future? Thanks in advance.

The fsck drive check at boot is failing to fix your drive, gets stuck and the hardware shuts down the machine if a OS isn't loaded in time.
"disk utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files."
Yep, it will either have to be replaced or zero erased and completely reformatted and everything installed again.

That's ok, the TimeMachine likely would have backed up the corrupted data and fail to properly restore anyway.
Since you can boot from RecoveryHD, that means you can install OS X on a blank external powered drive and boot from it and access the internal drive for your files. Or as a last restort install Data Rescue ($100) and that can read even deleted files off the drive bypassing the file system etc.
.Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive

  • Computer only shows progress bar on startup (spinning gear) after PRAM wipe

I used to work for a company that was trained by Apple years ago, but this issue is one I had never seen.
My computer was running a bit slow, so I chose restart from the Apple menu and then performed a PRAM reset. When my computer was booting back up, it just stays on the progress wheel (spinning gear) and after about 1 and a half minutes it restarts again. When I was working there, we were told that it was searching for the hard drive to boot up to.
I've tried another PRAM reset and an SMC reset. No change.
Also Option key on startup to choose my hard drive as the startup location. No change.
I booted up to my Windows partition and it booted up fine, with boot camp still working properly. However, it said it recovered from a fatal error. No change on mac side.
Tried Verbose mode and a force disk check. Nothing wrong with Mac HD volume.
If it were a hard drive crash, the Windows side wouldn't work, correct?
So is there any way I can fix this without taking it into an Apple store?
My Applecare Protection is now up, and funds are lacking.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Find your original OS X disks that came with your system. Insert the first one and reboot holding the C key down, which will cause it to boot from the OS X disk. From the utilities menu bar, bring up Disk Utility and run repair disk on the internal hard drive. While there, also repair permissions. Does repair disk give you any error messages? I know this will sound repetitive to doing the check disk from the boot volume, however, let's be sure it's not a hard drive issue.
Then reboot holding the D key down, this should bring up the Apple hardware test. When prompted, run the extended test. Does this indicate any hardware problems?

  • OS clean install interupted on 2011 Macbook Pro G4. Now computer not booting up

I have a Mac Book Pro G4 (Early 2011) I was in the middle of doing a Yosemite clean install and I I took the memory stick out before the OS finished because I couldn't cancel and I thought it was hung-up. Now it doesn't power up. I get the attached message!
After this message it just restarts, then message appears after 8 secs or so then restarts again...  I have the Software Install and Restore disk. It came with two. I tried that but it doesn't automatically open anything. I also tried to open in Safe mode but I don't think it get far enough along to do that... Help!!!!

I had downloaded Yosemite onto my Imac, then followed the instructions to create bootable OS on memory stick, Did that then tried to load that on my Macbook. I then made the mistake of taking it out mid install i think. Now it does what I mentioned above. The computer has tried to reboot with the memory stick in so that doesn't work... ;(
