2011 Mbp 13 inch memory problems

I bought the i5 13 inch Mac book pro the day they came out. Notice a few things just wanted to check if they are normal
1. Uses alot of memory
ex: Skype safari excel Open only and using 3.5 gigs of ram
Just Idle and activity manger open 1.89 gigs of ram used nothing opened
Seems weird
My ? Is how dis osx run on white mac books with only 2gigs that's why I'm concerned
2. Heating issue this things gets warm just doing normal surfing
Ex: just messing with IMovie fans kicked i'n like a. Jet
M up can have alot windows open and only use 25% of memory
3. Loud clicking noise i'n the hard drive area about 4 times
FYI i am quoting the programs when i am done

I agree however, my only problem is right after start up i am using 1.6 gigs of memory with nothing open but safari ... My HP laptop i had at least 15 tab window's of chrome open skype excel endicia( postal software) Stamps dot com software open and it was only 1.6 seems this apple system wont go below 1.6 with nothing open but one tab on safari open .. Its strange but again i am new to mac ( computer wise )
I have also experienced system slow i see the rainbow wheel a lot slow load web pages programs open very slowly ... I do not think i would have this problem with I5 thats why i bought a mac so i wouldnt get system hang up... ...Much better processor than my hp core duo.
Really do appreciate you responded to post..If you have any other suggestion i would appreciate it

  • AMD Radeon HD 6750M, Early 2011 MBP, 10.9.4 Problems

    Hello,
Ever since 10.9.3 update I have a serious problem with my Early 2011 MBP with AMD Radeon HD 6750M card.
    First my configuration:
MBP 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 (Macbook Pro 8,2)
    16 GB RAM
512 GB Sandisk SSD and 750 Stock HDD
AMD Radeon HD 6750M and Intel HD Graphics 3000
    OS X 10.9.4
I'm usually using my MBP with external display with a resolution of 1920x1080. The display is connected via DVI to Mini Display Port adapter. When I connect the external display, my MBP switches to the AMD card. Here's where the problems begin. If I'm using Davinci Resolve, Capture One Pro or any other software (that I use regularly) that uses the GPU extensively, the cpu usage will rise, the computer will start to feel sluggish and my productivity almost becomes none because even the simplest tasks such as opening another tab in firefox or safari takes anywhere between 1-3 sec. When the computer starts doing that, I cannot play a simple HD video at native fps and the whole machine basically becomes too expensive paper weight. The strange thing is that even after I quit all programs, the system cpu usage continues to be high, around 50% with kernel_task being the star using all this cpu and it keeps using all of this cpu forever, at least until i shut it down or disconnect the external display and manage to make it switch to the internal Intel gpu.
The problem started after istalling the 10.9.3 update and it's still there with the 10.9.4 update. I even formatted the computer and reinstalled everything but the problem still persists.
I haven't experienced anything like this on 10.9.2 and the machine was actually quite fast before that. Now, I have too expensive paper weight on my desk.
Since the problem is very specific, I doubt many users will complain and I doubt Apple will ever do anything to fix it, at least until hopefully the new drivers in 10.10 fix the issue hopefully.
    My question is:
    1. Has anyone else experienced this and managed to solve the problem?
    2. How can I downgrade to 10.9.2? I don't have time machine backup but i have bootable usb with 10.9.2. Will it help?
    All best,
    Goran

  • 2011 MBP 13-inch 2.3 GHz CPU Temp Issue

    Hi everyone!
I am new both to the Apple forum and the Mac. Two days ago, I purchased my very first Mac--MBP 13-inch 2.3 GHz (not customized or anything).  I've been playing around with the different applications and researching on different forums about CPU temp.  In a quiet room, I can hear the low buzz/hum of the computer. I thought MBPs were pretty much silent? Sorry if this is a silly question, but I just want to make sure there's nothing wrong.
On average, CPU temp is around 49-55 degrees Celsius with the fan running just under 2000 RPM which is fine. When I tried recording my voice through the built-in mic on GarageBand, after about 10 minutes, I heard the fan go on full blast. I checked iStat Nano, and the CPU temp was 91 degrees Celsius with the fans running from 6200 - 7000 RPM. Is this normal? I had Firefox, TweetDeck, and iChat running in the background.  Should I only have GarageBand open and nothing else in order for the CPU temp to not become as hot? 91 degrees Celsius is around 195 F so that scared me, and my computer was super hot combined with a really loud fan. Should I call Apple for support?
Thank you so much for your help, everyone!

I love Firefox, its the absolute greatest browser in the world I use it myself.
However Firefox and Chrome both are HUGE memory hogs, so you have to be a bit more conservative using them with other applicaiton's open. Occassionally in Firefox you may have to close all open windows and create a new one just to flush the RAM. Because everytime you open a new tab, it asks OS X for more memory and then doesn't give it back.
Also you must remember you bought a integrated graphics computer, meaning the CPU (processor) also does the graphics. This is double duty work the CPU must do and therefore twice the heat in one location.
There is a huge thread on these forums about the overheating 13" MacBook Pro's, perhaps if your a power user or a heavy multi-tasker that your should consider returning that machine complaining about the heat and get a 2.2 Ghz 15" MacBook Pro (or better) with the 1GB Radeon 6750M. It's a MUCH cooler machine and more powerful. I also advise the anti-glare high res screen so there are no reflections in the clasroom or at work etc.
I think you have a 14 day return window.

  • Early 2011 MBP Slowing Down

Hello, I have an early 2011 MBP (15-inch), system report below:
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011)
Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Startup Disk: Macintosh SSD
Graphics: HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
Lately, my MBP has been slowing down a lot.
I  tested out a bunch of flash sites, but it does not seem to be the problem. Like I said, I have 16gb of RAM (combined with what I have located above, i7, etc), and have had numerous  flash sites up, but no slowdown. The problem is recent, in that I've noticed it in the past 6 months. Nothing changed in that period at all to cause this problem.
I've run this setup for a couple years without issue (SSD where the DVD player used to be, and the HDD where the old HDD was located), without issue.
My MBP gets so hot that I have to move it frequently for scare of erythema eb igne (stupid technical term, but I might not be joking, and would rather not joke around about something like that.but seriously it get that hot where your only option is to shut off the MBP.  I know that might sound extreme. But my MBP gets that hot. Especially if you are running a program like Premiere. I understand the power and RAM that it takes to run a program like that, but it was shocking. This is a program (Premiere) I ran without problems previously..
Checking activity monitor (and iStat), RAM does not seem to be the issue. CPU seems fine 88-90% usage,
Usually have 7-8GB of RAM available, and the CPU usage under 90%.
I have no idea, but I will be taking a can of compressed air to the MBP.
I was just wondering if anyone had any other ideas or had similar situations to help me out?
    Thank You,
    T

  • My Early 2011 MBP Has Just Started Running Extremely Hot.

Hi there. As in the title I have an early 2011 MBP, 15 inch, £1550 model. I've been playing Football Manager a lot recently, and sure it runs at around 50-60 degrees but that's fine. However now i'm just on FireFox, been on for around 30 minutes, and my battery is being sapped as if I were playing a game and i'm at 60 degrees average with SMC at 5000 RPM as well as a notebook cooler which has a fan built in. Usually I run at around 30 on the internet, 40 is fine though.
Any reasons why it is doing this? Nothing is running at over 5% in the Activity Monitor. FireFox seems to be spiking though, at like 30%. It's really annoying because I want to play Football Manager but when I put it on, it's at like 70/80 degrees. Super, super hot considering I have lots of cooling stuff. Any clues anybody, please!?

"Nothing is running at over 5% in the Activity Monitor. FireFox seems to be spiking though, at like 30%."
Do you have "All Processes" selected in Activity Monitor? If not, select it in the drop-down menu and then see whether there's something using a large percentage of your CPU.

  • Macbook pro 15 inch wifi problem (late 2011)

    Hello,
Here I write a little desperate with this problem that I have on the MacBook Pro (late 2011) with WIFI .
For several months ago, when I power on the MBP is all apparently normal , spend a few minutes and I lose the WIFI , the icon still comes out as "connected " but no WIRELESS signal , I turned off the WIFI, but, when I try to change back to turn ON, the icon of WIFI still OFF ( the inverted triangle ) . Restarting the MBP and still the problem no signal and appears as disabled , delete PRAM several times until finally everything works again , spend some time and again the same thing sometimes is fine for several hours, go out to eat and return and again the same thing, the worst was when I saw the message "Hardware not found" and "X " where the icon goes WIFI . I rebooted several times and not managed , this was the "hardware not found" message. Some time ago I went something like , when Lion had and read that resetting the PRAM and managed , never came out , but now even that it manages , and it is becoming more common , I thought it was the OS ( MacOSX Mavericks ) so I reinstalled (I'm not used Time Machine, I install all again ), this work the lasted several days without fail, until she passed again, I'm out of WiFi, when I see no WIFI signal in the list , restart me WIFI goes off and I can not change , restart it goes back to " hardware not found" and so on.
Now desperate for this, I opened the MBP , disconnected the cables from the Airport card and reconnected with care and making sure you are all well , turned on the MBP again and works!!, I lasted two weeks , then I thought it was that. But again the whole problem again.
Already investigating more online and I found some details from other users
1 / Both WIFI and Bluetooth are on the same card ( the q disconnected and reconnected )
2 / If the card was wrong , losing the WIFI Bluetooth should lose , but I tried Bluetooth and has no problems
3 / Reported that resetting PRAM or SMC but still, in my case, does not work.
Now all I have left to rule is the WIFI antenna that is located ( if I remember correctly ) for the bottom of the screen, and according to several users this tends to fail from constant use to close or open the MBP (or either to cover or uncover ) , and sometimes it just heats and heats close to this area .
Has anyone had a similar problem? My MBP turns 2 only on March 7, 2014 , I can not believe all that cost me and now is about to fail , I have a Sony VAIO Core 2 Duo for about 5 years (or more) ago and is still running and has been dropped many times and nothing has ever happened : (
Additional data on my MBP ,
Several months ago ( long before the problem with the WIFI) I changed the hard drive for an SSD ( 250GB Corsair Neutron X ) .
There is a problem that often makes me too, is that when you close the MBP ( to open ) , and open it back again ( out of sleep) the following happens :
1 / It instantly freezes when waking from sleep and I have a long wait to enter the password.
2 / When you leave idle normal let me put the password, but just when giving ENTER freezes
3 / Out of sleep, let me put the key, ENTER and when I load the desktop freezes
    Another problem :
This only happened to me a few times , as I mentioned , my MBP is formatted ( have Mavericks ) before formatted (clean install without time machine) , I closed the MBP ( I sent to sleep) and the open the screen was black , but as with bright, and not leave the state, turned off force ( pressing the button) , start the MBP again (power on) charged normal gray screen with apple but with a fairly low brightness, spent a few seconds and turned the brightness to normal and started normally .
I hope some can help me with these problems.
PD : I'm from Peru , if anyone knows a trusted service that please let me know .
    Thank you very much .

Your wifi problem sounds very much like the problem I had. The wifi would drop out, the icon showed it was still connected. If I turned it off, I couldn't turn it back on. Another user here pointed me to the problem, which was the wifi cable (the flat cable goint from the card to the motherboard). I found it on ebay for $13 and it's been running fine since I replaced it. This is the repair guide for your machine. The part number will be on there if you click the link.

  • Cant get full HD on my LED TV using a MBP 13 inch late 2011.

    Hi!
I tryed to connect my MBP to a full HD LED TV and I cant get 1080p res. In fact, I tryed differents resolution but no one seems to be the right one.
A friend connect her MBP 13 inch mid 2009 (NVIDIA GeGorce 9400M) and has no problem. Both computers were connected to the LED TV thru a HDMI-Thunderbolt cable.
Is there any app that can resolve this? Does my computer supports full HD res?? Do I have to change the Graphic video card?
    PLZ HELP!

    Hello yainfarbman,
Thank you for all the information you provided about the issue.  If you look at the Technical Specifications of your MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011) (http://support.apple.com/kb/SP645), you can see that your computer should support the 1080p resolution:
Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors
If you are using mirroring, your Mac will attempt to match the closest resolution between the primary (or built-in) and secondary displays.  You won't have to change any hardware on your computer, but you may need to set it up as an extended desktop for the 1080p resolution to be available.  You can find the steps here to set the resolution when using the TV under the section titled "Extended desktop":
How to use multiple displays with your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5019
I hope this article helps you take advantage of the 1080p resolution of your HD LED TV.
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • Problems with Late 2011 MBP (catalog corrupt, won't boot from USB/CD)

    Hello,
I have had some problems with my Late 2011 MBP running OSX 10.8.x (latest update)
I was using Safari when suddenly my screen froze. It has happened a couple of times before but it usually is either: 1.) a black screen for 5 seconds while nothing works responds and then it continues work like nothing happened, or 2.) just a freeze for a moment which goes away within a few seconds. I have visited the official service and they found nothing wrong with my laptop and said that it may have been just random occurrence. This time it froze and as I waited the fans went crazy and had no other option but to shut down from the power button. Later, when I wanted to boot up, it gets to the Apple logo, the circle spins and the small bar below appears and after a second or two, it disappears and then the computer shuts down. I went to recovery mode and used disk utility to verify and repair the problem (which only works to find out the problem, not to fix it, thanks anyway apple) Heres what it showed:

I tried to boot DiskWarrior from a USB and a CD, after pushing enter in the bootable device's screen, I get a continuous loop of 3 beeps and I can't boot from either of the mediums.
I also tried the Single-user mode (Command-s when booting) and the /sbin/fsck -fy said that my HD is not completely verifiable. Also, 3/4 of the files mentioned in disk utility are also mentioned in this process, with errors as forrows: keys out of order, invalid index key, invalid extent entries (7 times), incorrect block counts, number of links and incorrect sizes for the foretold files and invalid catalog record type.
The reason why I'm not doing a clean install is that the last few days I've been in the process of deleting unnecessary items on my laptop so I could make a back-up (as for some reason, Time Machine is awfully slow and a new 600 gb backup would take and enormous amount of time, but that's a problem for another day) and as I had not yet reached the backing up part, my data is locked on this (possibly) corrupt HD. How should I advance and what steps should I take?
My first and most important mission would be to get back into my OS to make a back-up. Then I'd deal with the "not being able to boot form USB nor CD" and the TM problem.
    Thank you all in advance,
    Martin

Before you even start, consider that there may be no Windows 7 driver support for some of the hardware in your laptop. You won't know which hardware devices and functions are unsupported until you find out the hard way. In some cases, a driver conflict could cripple your computer.
Like most OEMS, Toshiba pre-installs Windows 8 to boot with EFI on a GPT hard drive. Your Windows 7 install disc, on the other hand, most likely boots with a BIOS from an MBR. Therefore, your Windows 7 disc will not boot your computer.
You would need to start by performing a low-level format of your hard drive. This completely erases the disc and its metadata. Then you could boot from your Windows installation disc and try to install Windows 7. How successful you will be depends on driver support.
All things considered, you should stay with Windows 8. Next time, more research before you buy.

Look in Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) and see if you have any runaway processes using a lot of %CPU.
I would also strongly recommend running Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode. If it reports errors you can Google them or post them here.

You don't have a late 2011 MB Pro.
    You have a 2010 version.  Your MB doesn't support 16GB.  8GB Max.
That's what it shows on your about this MAC.
    You need to return the RAM and get 8GB ( 2 X 4GB ) 1066MHz.
Your system bus is set to 1066MHz.
You're having issues because you've installed more RAM than your MB can support.  It's only reading 4GB per bank which totals to 8GB and not 16GB.

  • 2011 MBP Airport Problems

Okay, so i've had problems with airport on my 2011 MBP since they gave me this one as a replacement for another laptop that was faulty (different reason).
This one, works on wifi, then it drops, then it comes back again. I've spoken to applecare who have said there 'appears to be a problem' and requested me to format the harddrive to see if i could replicate the problem on a clean harddrive with no software updates.
The problem is still occuring, if i ping my router when the airport seems to stop (full wifi signal) i obtain a 100% packet loss (everything else that is on Wifi is working when this occurs on the MBP). Now I'm getting a combination of this and airport disabling itself, if I click on the wifi network, it asks me to put in my password but does not allow me to select ok. The only way around this is then to proceed to turn airport off and turn it back on.
Does this sound like a hardware fault? and has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Well, some of it is fixed. My wife's MacBookAir still knocks me off of the network. ...H

I personnally use the CoolMaster NotePal X2. I bought this one because of the great location of the fan and how it fitted my Mac. I use it for my MacBook Pro 15 inch and fits perfectely.
The MacBook Pro 13 inch will also fit but you'll see the borders of the fan.
Anyways, here's the link on Amazon.com (I think they can deliver in Malaysia):

  • Take 2010 MBP hard drive & stick it into a 2011 MBP? Problem? Will it work?

    Have 15" 2010 MBP.
    Upgrading to 15" 2011 MBP.
Can I simply take the HD out of the 2010 system, stick it into the 2011 system, boot from CD, and reinstall OS X?
Also, can I do the same thing with the 2011 HD that will be going into the 2010 model?

Yes. Use the CD that comes with the new Mac.

Yes. Use either the CD that came with the 2010 model, or a retail Snow Leopard disc. The one that comes with your new Mac won't boot the old one.

  • Problems with 17" 2011 MBP optibay sata speeds for SSD.

I have a 17" early 2011 MBP.  I noticed that the optibay SATA is only 3GB/S.  Since I need to set up an internal RAID with SSD (SATA III 6Gb/S), and newer versions are now supporting this (I was under the impression that my earlier one would too), what are my options to get the optibay to work at the proper speed?  Do I need to replace the MBP?  Are there fixes that can be done by Apple repair?
I need this for a number of on site video editing jobs that I need to complete over the next four months.  without the RAID set up, i don't see how I can do this.  I am also in process of getting the new thunderbolt RAID for in the office.
Can anyone give me advice on how to address this issue?  I can swap the system as long as I can pull the current disk drive (and replace with the one that was delivered with the system), if that is what I need to do.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi David,
What little I know about this for sure is that there are at least 2 different optical drive interfaces for the 2011 17" MBP.
I bet you can guess the difference; iirc correctly, the ones that shipped early on have the SATA II interface, while later/current ones have the SATA III. You can check yours in System Profiler, but again, I bet you know already. Again, iirc, the early ones cannot be updated to run at SATA III/6Gbps.
I don't know any of the above with 100% certainty, so I would continue looking/asking, but if it is correct, that means you'd need a new MBP (and need to make sure it's newer stock; what the cutoff is, I have no idea). fwiw

  • Brand new Macbook pro 15inch (not Retina) wont boot my MBP 13 inch (2011) HD

Just bought a brand new macbook pro 15 inch, replaced the hdd with my 13 inch hdd and it wont boot. i got a Error msg. (Lion)
    - I put the new hdd in the old MBP(13 inch) and it boots fine.
    - I put back the old hdd in the MBP(13 inch) and it boots fine.
I figured the hdd wasnt compatable with the 15inch so then i cloned the 13inch hdd onto the 15inch hoping it would work. i still got the error msg.
so now im stuck because the 15inch wont boot from the stock hdd because it has the data from the 13inch. Very frustrating, what could be the logical reason to why it wont boot?

That's correct. The version of Lion you have on your old disk will not boot on the new machine.
What you should have done is make a Time Machine backup of your old drive. You still may be able to buy an enclosure for it and see if you can use Migration Assistant to migrate your apps and data, but I'm not sure that will work (works when an old drive is in another Mac and you transfer via, for instance, Firewire).
So you'll just have to resinatll the correct version of Mountain Lion and then you can TRY to use Migration Asistant to get your data/apps from your old hard drive once it's in an enclosure (again, I'm not sure that it will actually WORK, I've never tried it).
