2011 MBP 15 gaming problem

I charged my battery to 100% then played Starcraft for a while and my battery was at 15% so i plugged in the charger. After about an hour i notice the indicator on the charger was green and i was thinking wow that was a fast charge, so i take a look at the battery and its at 15%. While i was playing Starcraft the battery didn't charge at all, it would go down to 14% start charging then stop charging at 15% then start charging again at 14% and it cycled like that for some time. So after i was done playing and closed out of Starcraft then the battery started charging. So battery charges only when not in starcraft. Anyone else have this problem? any solutions?

Get yourself a $8000 alienware gaming laptop from Dell, it will drink even more power and the battery will be dead in 30 minutes.
Laptops are designed with the right balance of performance and portability, you have to accept that or just get a desktop machine which perform about 2-3x better in games anyway. If you can't spend the money for that, then get yourself a console like a PS3 or a X-Box, both drink huge amounts of power, are basically heaters and need elaborate cooling.
Apple is shifting their entire laptop line over to integrated graphics, only the 2.2 Ghz 15" and better have the powerful 1GB Radeon 6750M for 3D gaming.
Take what you can get for as long as you can get it. It might be lame 2D games like Tetris and BubblePop here shortly.

  • MBP FPS/Gaming Problems in OS X

My New C2D 2.4 256mb vram MBP has been working beautifully in OS X. I was getting a solid 55-60 fps with vsync on and all settings on high in WoW up until a few days ago. About a week ago I formatted OS X and reinstalled everything. Now for the last few days I have been having some lag issues with ET:QW (game feels laggy even on low/norm graphics settings).
I noticed today when I was playing WoW my FPS was jumping gform 12-30 and hovering at 30 then jumping to 60. Im not getting consistent 60 like I always was. This is constant, even with addons turned off.
I am wondering what happened to my laptop? Is this an overheating issue (temps are around 75 as soon as the game starts, but go back down to 50s when its not gaming). There definitley is something wrong because Im not getting constant 60 and ET:QW is way too laggy for my graphics and CPU power. Could this be an OS X issue, but why would it not be there before?
Im so stressed and worried - any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

First, are you sure you've installed all the updates for OS X? You should be on 10.5.4. If you're running an out-of-date version of OS X, you're running older video drivers.
Secondly, are you sure you're at the same location in WoW that were at when you first measured the framerates? In other words, it's easy to get 60 fps when nothing is happening on your screen. By contrast, if you're in a busy location with lots of graphical activity, frame rates will naturally be lower.
As for temperatures, no. Those temps are normal for a laptop under lots of strain. You should keep in mind that even though your MBP is brand new, it's running a video card that, essentially, is early-2007 era technology. The card in the MBP is old and dated (for a video card).

  • MBP 2012 Gaming Problems/Questions

I am new to Mac, and hoping for some help. I purchased a used MBP mid 2012 non-retina version, 16gb ram, 1tb ssd, 2.9ghz i7, intel hd 4000. It's the fastest computer I've ever owned as far as booting and loading programs goes, but the gaming seems to be horrid. I installed boot camp about two weeks ago, updated every driver through boot camp, and then tried to play Dark Souls II. Even on lowest settings my FPS constantly drops every 2 seconds no matter how long I've spent in the area of the game before. The more characters trying to attack me, the laggier it gets. I tried to install intel hd 4000 drivers from their site hoping that would help, it did not. I'm really bummed out because I spent a good sum of money on this computer and planned on using it for both gaming & music production. The music production part is flawless in both Win7 & Mavericks.. Why the horrible lag? Any ideas? I've really been trying to research all over but I keep finding the answer of resetting SMC for retina version which I do not have, and when I tried did not help what-so-ever. Thanks for any help

intel makes video cards which makes games horrid
people who wish to play games on their computers get the models with amd or nvidia video chips
don't think you can do anything apart from lowering the resolution and removing eye candy from the games

  • Problems with Late 2011 MBP (catalog corrupt, won't boot from USB/CD)

    Hello,
I have had some problems with my Late 2011 MBP running OSX 10.8.x (latest update)
I was using Safari when suddenly my screen froze. It has happened a couple of times before but it usually is either: 1.) a black screen for 5 seconds while nothing works responds and then it continues work like nothing happened, or 2.) just a freeze for a moment which goes away within a few seconds. I have visited the official service and they found nothing wrong with my laptop and said that it may have been just random occurrence. This time it froze and as I waited the fans went crazy and had no other option but to shut down from the power button. Later, when I wanted to boot up, it gets to the Apple logo, the circle spins and the small bar below appears and after a second or two, it disappears and then the computer shuts down. I went to recovery mode and used disk utility to verify and repair the problem (which only works to find out the problem, not to fix it, thanks anyway apple) Heres what it showed:

I tried to boot DiskWarrior from a USB and a CD, after pushing enter in the bootable device's screen, I get a continuous loop of 3 beeps and I can't boot from either of the mediums.
I also tried the Single-user mode (Command-s when booting) and the /sbin/fsck -fy said that my HD is not completely verifiable. Also, 3/4 of the files mentioned in disk utility are also mentioned in this process, with errors as forrows: keys out of order, invalid index key, invalid extent entries (7 times), incorrect block counts, number of links and incorrect sizes for the foretold files and invalid catalog record type.
The reason why I'm not doing a clean install is that the last few days I've been in the process of deleting unnecessary items on my laptop so I could make a back-up (as for some reason, Time Machine is awfully slow and a new 600 gb backup would take and enormous amount of time, but that's a problem for another day) and as I had not yet reached the backing up part, my data is locked on this (possibly) corrupt HD. How should I advance and what steps should I take?
My first and most important mission would be to get back into my OS to make a back-up. Then I'd deal with the "not being able to boot form USB nor CD" and the TM problem.
    Thank you all in advance,
    Martin

Before you even start, consider that there may be no Windows 7 driver support for some of the hardware in your laptop. You won't know which hardware devices and functions are unsupported until you find out the hard way. In some cases, a driver conflict could cripple your computer.
Like most OEMS, Toshiba pre-installs Windows 8 to boot with EFI on a GPT hard drive. Your Windows 7 install disc, on the other hand, most likely boots with a BIOS from an MBR. Therefore, your Windows 7 disc will not boot your computer.
You would need to start by performing a low-level format of your hard drive. This completely erases the disc and its metadata. Then you could boot from your Windows installation disc and try to install Windows 7. How successful you will be depends on driver support.
All things considered, you should stay with Windows 8. Next time, more research before you buy.

  • MBP 2011 died and having problems reinstalling Mac OS

    Hello,
Having problems trying to make my MBP start working again...
    Tech info:
Early 2011 MBP, 10.6.6 preinstalled Mac OS X
    2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
    8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    256GB Solid State Drive
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
MacBook Pro 17-inch Hi-Resolution Antiglare Widescreen Display
Was full updated up to date 3-4 days ago, so probably it was 10.6.7 before the crash.
I am pretty new to Macs and english is not my first language, so please excuse me if i use wrong terminology. Thanks.
It is pretty long story, the problem is - i can not install Mac OS X and make it work. The at the moment description of the situation is in Part 6, so you might want to skip parts 1-5, although reading those might be needed to understand the source of the problem or some details.
    The Story:
Everything worked great for about a month but then multi-language kernel panic windows asking me to reboot computer poped up. Reboot didnt help and it kept asking me for more and more reboots after like 1 minute after it logs in into Mac Os.
I had 3 programms(among others) installed: Kaspersky(fully updated trial), Parallels(activated a month age oem version, runing Windows 7 as a virtual machine without using Bootcamp) and virtualbox(activated 2 weeks ago, not being used or opened for ~10 days).
Part 1 - After logging into Mac OS 2 messages always pop'ed up:
    1) Kaspersky couldnt lunch in previous Mac OS startup(not current)
    2) Parallels message: Its time to choose either to use trial Parallels or to enter activation key. Thats really weird because it was activated a month ago, was fully updated and worked great every day. When i tried to activate it again it just didnt accept the key which was accepted last time: the icon was still grey and not clickable, rechecked 10 times at that moment.
Ok, decided to uninstall both Kaspersky and Parallels via Safe Mode. Safe Mode is working fine. Removed programms by dragging them from application folder to trash can. Worked fine. Logged into normal mode. No messages appear except the "Hello, you had kernel last time", but still Kernel appear in 2-3 minutes. Logging in 32b mode(by pressing 32 while booting up) doesn't help either.
Part 2 - Rebooted. Booted from boot DVD and used Disk utility - nothing is wrong.
Went to safe mode again. Found Kernel Log and it showed me that the source of the error was some file of VirtualBox(at least it has virtualbox in its name. Virtualbox itself, again, wasn't launched for like 10 days) located in /extension folder. Removed virtualbox program by dragging it from applications folder to trash. Worked fine, but those files in /extension folder weren't deleted. I am pretty new to Macs, so i wasn't sure if those are really VirtualBox programm's files or Mac OS system files, so i decided to reboot and check if the problem still not fixed.
Result: You cant boot neither in normal mode or in Safe mode. It just doesnt react on anything.
    No backups. Great.
Part 3. Booted via boot DVD. Worked fine. Checked if disc was ok - it wasn't ok. Tried to repair - cant repair, suggests me to reinstall.
Made a backup on external HDD(have it atm, so iа you need any info i can get from that backup to help you guys understand what happened - ask and i will give it to you asap).
Erased internal HDD with zeroes(1 row), it still has 4 files on it(around 300 mb), probably those are the files copied from Boot DVD, but i am not sure.
Part 4. Tried to install Mac OS from boot DVD. File system is for Mac os with journaled option activated. Installation process starts fine but at some point(around 25-30% while telling me its around 30 minutes left) the error message appears telling mу the installation couldn't be continued because it cant copy some files from DVD(no particullar files mentioned). Advising me to reboot and try again. Same thing happens always.
DVD disk was never used and even not unpacked before, looks fine...
Part 5. Inserted the boot DVD in another mac, made a copy via disk utility in mac os(without booting using this disc), copied it to external drive where the backup is. So there are 2 files on external drive: backup.dmg and starupDVD.dmg.
Pulled in the external hdd to MBP and tried clicking option key to choose him to boot from HDD. Nothing happens, just mouse appears without any windows where i can choose the boot option. Weird. Tried all 3 usb ports, same problem. Tried to put the DVD disk and click option key - both mouse and window appears, but only DVD boot option avaivable.
Tried to reset RAM by clicking Command-Option-P-R keys. Reset went fine(the sound and so on), but it didn't effect on anything.
Part 6(this very moment): So here i am. Have erased internal HDD with 4 files in it(around 300 mb, dont know what), boot DVD which came along with MBP with 10.6.6 MaсOS, external HDD with the same DVD and backup.
Disk utility says my internal HDD is ok.
Clicking option key doesnt make my MBP see external HDD while it is plugged in any usb port, only mouse appears. Same option key sees dvd disk if it is plugged in and boots normally.
You can see and work with external HDD if you boot from boot DVD.
Installation process starts both fine on internal and external HDDs. On internal it crashed with "cant copy files" message at ~20-30%(~30 minutes left), on external the screen just turns grey with moveable mouse on it without any messages at around 30%(~40 minutes left).
External HDD - Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1TB USB 3.0
Internal HDD - 256gb SSD which came from Apple (sorry for calling it internal HDD)
    Think its pretty much it...
What should i do to make this thing work? Pretty much desperate already.
    Thank You for any help.
    Sincerely yours,
    Alexander.

Just one more thing - the description of what i did while first Kernel appeared:
Happened 2 days ago. Wasn't turning it off for like a day, only sleep mode by closing it. Worked fine all day, wasn't doing anything, except for checking mail 2-3 times and having windows 7 virtual machine opened but doing nothing, everything was going fine. Then closed it without turning off.
Opened 3-4 hours later, everything was working fine for 30 minutes of checking mail, then Kernel appeared. After that pretty much everything i did is described in part 1-5.
Note: all the time MBP was connected to internet via wifi, so updates to both MBP and virtual machine of all programs were possible.
I only shared downloads and desktop folders, so windows couldn't have access to system folder of Mac Os.
    Hope this might help...Thanks again.

  • AMD Radeon HD 6750M, Early 2011 MBP, 10.9.4 Problems

    Hello,
Ever since 10.9.3 update I have a serious problem with my Early 2011 MBP with AMD Radeon HD 6750M card.
    First my configuration:
MBP 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7 (Macbook Pro 8,2)
    16 GB RAM
512 GB Sandisk SSD and 750 Stock HDD
AMD Radeon HD 6750M and Intel HD Graphics 3000
    OS X 10.9.4
I'm usually using my MBP with external display with a resolution of 1920x1080. The display is connected via DVI to Mini Display Port adapter. When I connect the external display, my MBP switches to the AMD card. Here's where the problems begin. If I'm using Davinci Resolve, Capture One Pro or any other software (that I use regularly) that uses the GPU extensively, the cpu usage will rise, the computer will start to feel sluggish and my productivity almost becomes none because even the simplest tasks such as opening another tab in firefox or safari takes anywhere between 1-3 sec. When the computer starts doing that, I cannot play a simple HD video at native fps and the whole machine basically becomes too expensive paper weight. The strange thing is that even after I quit all programs, the system cpu usage continues to be high, around 50% with kernel_task being the star using all this cpu and it keeps using all of this cpu forever, at least until i shut it down or disconnect the external display and manage to make it switch to the internal Intel gpu.
The problem started after istalling the 10.9.3 update and it's still there with the 10.9.4 update. I even formatted the computer and reinstalled everything but the problem still persists.
I haven't experienced anything like this on 10.9.2 and the machine was actually quite fast before that. Now, I have too expensive paper weight on my desk.
Since the problem is very specific, I doubt many users will complain and I doubt Apple will ever do anything to fix it, at least until hopefully the new drivers in 10.10 fix the issue hopefully.
    My question is:
    1. Has anyone else experienced this and managed to solve the problem?
    2. How can I downgrade to 10.9.2? I don't have time machine backup but i have bootable usb with 10.9.2. Will it help?
    All best,
    Goran

  • 2011 MBP Airport Problems

Okay, so i've had problems with airport on my 2011 MBP since they gave me this one as a replacement for another laptop that was faulty (different reason).
This one, works on wifi, then it drops, then it comes back again. I've spoken to applecare who have said there 'appears to be a problem' and requested me to format the harddrive to see if i could replicate the problem on a clean harddrive with no software updates.
The problem is still occuring, if i ping my router when the airport seems to stop (full wifi signal) i obtain a 100% packet loss (everything else that is on Wifi is working when this occurs on the MBP). Now I'm getting a combination of this and airport disabling itself, if I click on the wifi network, it asks me to put in my password but does not allow me to select ok. The only way around this is then to proceed to turn airport off and turn it back on.
Does this sound like a hardware fault? and has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Well, some of it is fixed. My wife's MacBookAir still knocks me off of the network. ...H

  • Take 2010 MBP hard drive & stick it into a 2011 MBP? Problem? Will it work?

    Have 15" 2010 MBP.
    Upgrading to 15" 2011 MBP.
Can I simply take the HD out of the 2010 system, stick it into the 2011 system, boot from CD, and reinstall OS X?
Also, can I do the same thing with the 2011 HD that will be going into the 2010 model?

Yes. Use the CD that comes with the new Mac.

Yes. Use either the CD that came with the 2010 model, or a retail Snow Leopard disc. The one that comes with your new Mac won't boot the old one.

  • Problems with 17" 2011 MBP optibay sata speeds for SSD.

I have a 17" early 2011 MBP.  I noticed that the optibay SATA is only 3GB/S.  Since I need to set up an internal RAID with SSD (SATA III 6Gb/S), and newer versions are now supporting this (I was under the impression that my earlier one would too), what are my options to get the optibay to work at the proper speed?  Do I need to replace the MBP?  Are there fixes that can be done by Apple repair?
I need this for a number of on site video editing jobs that I need to complete over the next four months.  without the RAID set up, i don't see how I can do this.  I am also in process of getting the new thunderbolt RAID for in the office.
Can anyone give me advice on how to address this issue?  I can swap the system as long as I can pull the current disk drive (and replace with the one that was delivered with the system), if that is what I need to do.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi David,
What little I know about this for sure is that there are at least 2 different optical drive interfaces for the 2011 17" MBP.
I bet you can guess the difference; iirc correctly, the ones that shipped early on have the SATA II interface, while later/current ones have the SATA III. You can check yours in System Profiler, but again, I bet you know already. Again, iirc, the early ones cannot be updated to run at SATA III/6Gbps.
I don't know any of the above with 100% certainty, so I would continue looking/asking, but if it is correct, that means you'd need a new MBP (and need to make sure it's newer stock; what the cutoff is, I have no idea). fwiw

  • Gaming Performance Increase from Late 2011 MBP to 11 or 13 MBA 2013?

I have a Late 2011 MBP 13,upgraded with 256 GB SSD and 6 GB RAM.
    I play mostly CS:S, SC2, WoW, D3 and that's about it.
I would like to be able to move into SimCity (After Aug 29 Launch Obviously), and perhaps DCUO and The Old Republic (VIA BootCamp)
Would I see a nice jump with the haswell chips in the MBA 2013 model?
If so I might jump, if not I am ok here right now, running wow at low with 30+ FPS.
Just curious, thanks for the advice!

The Late 2011 13-inch MacBook Pro has got an Intel HD Graphics 3000 GPU, and the Mid 2013 13-inch MacBook Air has got an Intel HD Graphics 5000 GPU.
The MacBook Air will work better with graphic tasks, but both of them are not ready for heavy use.
If you want to play games like those ones, the best thing you can do is to get a 15-inch MacBook Pro, which includes a quad-core processor and a NVIDIA GPU which will work correctly. The difference will be very big compared to the Mid 2013 MacBook Air.
Also, the MacBook Air is not ready for games. It overheats quickly, and high temperatures damage it. If you get the MacBook Air, don't set high values in games, and make sure that the games you want to play support integrated graphic cards

  • Early 2011 MBP 17 Random Shutdown and Battery Behavior

Hi all, new to the forums here.
I recently purchased a refurbished early 2011 MBP 17' 2.2 Ghz i7 with 8gb and 10.7.5. Out of the box, machine looked great, but I noticed that the power cable was different than the one I had for my early 2011 MBP 15' I have for work. This raised an immediate redflag (buying from a refurb site outside of apple is always a cause for concern IMO) so I abstained from using that charger until I knew a little more. I plugged in the machine and booted it up and everything worked great. The batter was close to 100%, so after charging for approximately 20 min, I unplugged it, and the laptop immediately died. I powered it back on, and the harddrive began to spin for a few seconds, then the same result, total loss of power. Started up again, and I was able to boot into OS X and play around for a bit for a period of time before again, shut down.
For the next few days, same story. I was able to at one point, drain the battery completely and do a full cycle charge. The first time I did this, no change in behavior. Again, a few days later, I was able to drain the battery and perform a full cycle charge, but this time, a major change in behvior. Since the second full cycle charge, I have had absolutely no power problems. I haven't really "pushed" my MBP to see if fully utilizing the CPU/RAM/GPU will produce the similar results I had early, but it appears that everything is working great.
Here a few interesting notes to my situation.
When I was first operating the system (when plugged in, there were no shutdowns, only while on the battery) I pulled up my system report, and noticed that my battery cycle was very low (~5). This seemed odd, because I had opted for a used battery instead of a new one.
Prior to reinstalling Mountain Lion, my volume up key would trigger a few strange events. The screen for briefly get quite bright, then all open applications + the doc and widgets would restart (similar to killing explorer.exe in the windows task manager).
Since performing the fresh install, I have had abslutely no issue with my MBP and I love it, its a beautiful machine. However, as I purchased refurb, I'm hesitant to proceed (I will exceed my return period in ~2 weeks) without knowing my machine is in prime working condition. I have read issues about early 2011 models having issues with batteries and GPUs, but my symptoms were dissimilar to those described by others with those particular issues.
    Any thoughts?
I have a genius appointment tomorrow evening for a general diagnostics check, but if others have experienced these issues, I would appreciate some input.

  • Can't install windows 8.1 on early 2011 MBP

    Hey all,
I'm having problems installing Windows 8.1 on my Early 2011 MBP (MacBookPro8,2). When my superdrive died I installed an SSD for the boot drive and kept the original hard drive as a secondary drive. I used BCA (modified to support USB) to create a USB 2 Windows 8.1 install drive from an ISO I previously created. I also had it partition the hard drive. When it reboots I get the "no bootable device found" and blinking cursor issue. I've tried holding down option and choosing EFI, but i've picked up during the last week that installing through EFI on my MacBook Pro isn't possible. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?

I ended up coming across this last night:
    http://malwaretips.com/threads/installing-windows-on-a-mac-with-a-damaged-superd rive.32474/
I am in the process of testing this out, but currently I'm stuck with an issue with winclone not expanding the image of the usb install disk to use all the space in the partition. However I did boot into the Windows installer and didn't run into the "couldn't find partition" , "no bootable disk", or "not an MBR" errors I've seen before.
I Think the key for non supported hardware and Windows 8 or later is to create the bootable usb in windows and not through BCA. I actually used the VMWare Fusion trial and a windows 10 technical demo image to do the monkeying around in windows. Hope this helps someone else. I'll keep updating.

  • 10.6.7, the 2011 MBP, and the death of easy cloning....

I'm a photographer and whenever I've hit the road in the past, I'd clone my MacPro boot drive to an external, then boot my MacBookPro from the external, clone the external to the internal on the MBP and I'd be off, with an exact replica of my desktop machine, with all my apps, settings, email, etc.
Just got a 2011 MBP and tried this out with 10.6.6. It would not boot the MBP. After some research, I figured out that I needed to install from the MBP OS install DVD onto the external boot drive while it is attached to the MBP, then clone it over to the internal. This worked, but sucked up some major time to do the instal.
Now 10.6.7 is out, with different flavors for different machines. Seems if I install 10.6.7 on my Desktop and then clone to an external drive, I wont be able to run the 10.6.6 installer disk the came with my MBP.
According to this article: http://www.hardmac.com/news/2011/03/23/about-the-different-versions-mac-os-x-10- 6-7 I might wind up with some weird problems if I do.
Any suggestions out of this mess until 10.6.8 comes along and (maybe) fixes this?

Instead of cloning the whole boot volume, why not just copy your documents? You wouldn't want identical systems on a Mac Pro and a portable, even if it were possible.

  • Considering going from late 2011 MBP to MBA. Seeking advice on performance.

I currently have a late 2011 MBP with 4GB RAM, 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 and am running into some performance issues. My main issue is that it takes time to switch between apps and sometimes to open a new tab in chrome. I have a lot of apps open for work purposes and I'm thinking the slowness could be due to not having enough RAM. When I look at Activity Monitor>System Memory, I see that I have about 1GB in Inactive, 1 GB in Active, and 2 GB in Wired. Then I'm seeing 5.62GB of swap used (that doesn't seem good).
I like how compact the MBAs are and am thinking of getting either the i5 or i7 with 8GB of RAM. I'm thinking that the increase in RAM as well as the flash storage would help with the type of slowness I'm seeing, but would hate to buy it only to have the same problems.
I would love to get some advice on this.

I HAD the same 2011 MBP you have, and HAVE the current Macbook AIR,....theres almost no comparison between the two. You should possibly go use one for a bit at the Apple store etc, however regarding your question "will it be a difference/ big upgrade" the answer is of course yes,....definately so.
