2011 mbp and charter cable internet

i just got charter high speed cable internet installed. i was with U-verse. So i thought going from 18 mb download to 30 mb download for less money was good.  but now my mbp freezes up when loading pages.  wife's imac no issues.  ipads no issues. iphone no issues. just the mac book pro.
it slows down connected by ethernet or wirelss.  i also have a time capsule and tried to go through that and that also slows down.
but speed tests show 30-50 mb down load and when it works, it flies but more often than not, it freezes. 10-15 seconds to load a page. to get to these forums, it was slow.
i got 8mb ram on mbp. bought it in july 2011.
i did not have these issues with u-verse.  so it has to be something between the charter set up on the modem but i don't know what to look for.
thanks

Can you login into the modem configuration and change the lease times of the IP address ?

  • 10.6.7, the 2011 MBP, and the death of easy cloning....

I'm a photographer and whenever I've hit the road in the past, I'd clone my MacPro boot drive to an external, then boot my MacBookPro from the external, clone the external to the internal on the MBP and I'd be off, with an exact replica of my desktop machine, with all my apps, settings, email, etc.
Just got a 2011 MBP and tried this out with 10.6.6. It would not boot the MBP. After some research, I figured out that I needed to install from the MBP OS install DVD onto the external boot drive while it is attached to the MBP, then clone it over to the internal. This worked, but sucked up some major time to do the instal.
Now 10.6.7 is out, with different flavors for different machines. Seems if I install 10.6.7 on my Desktop and then clone to an external drive, I wont be able to run the 10.6.6 installer disk the came with my MBP.
According to this article: http://www.hardmac.com/news/2011/03/23/about-the-different-versions-mac-os-x-10- 6-7 I might wind up with some weird problems if I do.
Any suggestions out of this mess until 10.6.8 comes along and (maybe) fixes this?

Instead of cloning the whole boot volume, why not just copy your documents? You wouldn't want identical systems on a Mac Pro and a portable, even if it were possible.

  • Charter cable internet + Airport Express = frequently offline

    Hi -
I've had trouble keeping multiple computers online wirelessly at the same time. Seems that initially the Charter cable worked flawlessly (10+ Mbps down, 1+ up), but when I added a Linksys router to it, only one of our Mac laptops seemed to be able to connect at a time, and even that was spotty.
Just bought an Airport Express, hoping that eliminating the other router would be an easy fix. The MBP that I set it up with seems to be the happiest with it - being online most of the time. But when we add another computer to the network, we start to have issues - stall outs, BBoD, offline, etc - where generally the answer is repeatedly turning off and back on the airport on each computer until we notice that we're back online.
Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, what did you do to fix it? Thanks in advance - and I'll post any solutions that work in case they'll help someone else in the future...

I just got charter cable and experiencing problems also! Connected direct to the cable modem it's fast at 10mbps down and 1mbps up. I then connected a DLink 624 wireless router that I had been using at my old place and the signal range is very weak, even right next to the router. This was very strange as I had been using this router with Comcast and SBC DSL with excellent results before. So I then hooked up my airport express and it works but my speeds went to 2.5mbps down and .1mbps up. this is horrible. And in addition my airport express will stop connecting to the internet sometimes even when it's green and the modem is lit up green. Rebooting multiple times does nothing. Now 3 hours later it's working again. Called charter but they say it's my router's problem. I'm about to try my 3rd router, but I think this has something to do with Charter. Is anyone else having problems with Charter?

  • Resetting Network of multiple base stations on Charter Cable Internet

Resetting a cable connected airport network seems like a black art.  In this site I see constant recommendations for "perhaps" solutions, but no certain procedures.
Does any Charter Cable subscriber have a proven suggestion for how to reset the Cable<>Airport network to the saved profile when it goes on the blink?  Particularly what the sweep time is for the modem and Apple
Our network has one main 802.11n Extreme base station with two ethernet lines of two 802.11n Express remote base stations each. The latest firmware upgrade and Airport Utilities software is version  5.5.3.

Yeah, it is not explained as clearly as it could be, but I hope I can clarify, I’m sure there are those who read this forum who are more knowledgeable, but here goes.
The way I understand this document is:
    The settings in step 3,
The first figure is for the base station that is connected to your cable modem.
The second figure is for your remote base stations connected via the Ethernet cable from the main base station.
Step 4 is for all base stations connected via the WAN connecter (all base stations connected via cable should be set up like in the figure in step 4.  All base stations connected via a cable are being use to “Create a Wireless Network” and if you leave the “Radio Mode:” and “Radio Channel Selection:” set to automatic they should choose WIFi channels that will be optimal for your network.
If someone else know better or can explain better feel free to jump in, but I will continue to do what I can.
I'm still working on my network as well.  It is a little more complex, and enough of it is working now, so I'm going to give it a rest for a day or two, then jump back into it.

  • TC Wireless and Charter cable

I can connect fine via ethernet, but wirless is not. Any ideas on what the settings should be? Driving me nuts. I'm going to reinstall my linksys for the time being.

There was no fix. Just walked away for a little bit. When I came back, it was connected. I've got to tell you though... I'm not happy with it. I'm seriously considering returning it. Tried to connect today and it was down. Too frustrating. I'll got buy a 3rd party network drive.

  • What is the best way to run dual monitors with a 2011 MBP?

I have a 2011 MBP and i want to run dual 1920x1080 monitors. what is the best way to accomplish this? i also have a PC attached to the monitors with the DVI connection (but would be willing to change this to the analog, if necessary). so i have teh analog and HDMI connections available on the backs of the monitors.
what i would like to do is hook the MBP through the HDMI if possible and then i would just be able to change inputs on the monitors depending in which computer i want to use (PC or MBP).
any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Ok, you either own a MacBook Pro with an Intel Processor, or a PowerBook with a PowerPC Processor.
If your stated speed is correct, then you own a PowerBook, which will not run Windows natively. development & sales for Virtual PC has ceased. The only emulator still around, I think, is iEmulator & is terribly slow on G4s.
Boot Camp does not work on PowerPC Macs.

  • Issues with 2011 MBP fixed?

Hi, I was wondering if the 10.6.7 update successfully fixed the major issues that were reported (screen freezing, fan running, etc.) or are these hardware issues that can't be fixed with an update? My mom wants a new laptop and I really think she should get a Mac, but I'm hesitant to order a 2011 because of these issues...it's a headache I don't want or need!
Also, are new 2010 Macbook Pro's still available anywhere? Would you recommend buying a used 2010 on ebay or is that risky?

We've purchased more than dozen Early 2011 MBP and none have those issues. Apple has a refurb section if that makes you feel better. And they have a full year warranty that you can even purchase AppleCare for.

  • I am having trouble connecting to my in-home internet via wireless router. It says it is connected, but when I try to open email, no connection is found. This also occurs for Safari and Facebook. I am connected by Charter Cable.

I am having trouble connecting to my in-home internet via my wireless router. The IPad says I'm connected to the router, but I am unable to receive email, Facebook and Safari. I run through Charter Cable.  This only occurs on my IPad. My desktop works fine.

Although it may ultimately be necessary to perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme and start over with a new configution, we can first try to see if things will work with the existing settings on the device.
Push the reset button (if present) on the cable modem
Power off the modem by pulling the power cable
Remove the internal battery from the modem (if easily accessible)
Power off the AirPort Extreme and every other device on the network....order is not important
Wait at least 20 minutes....longer is better
Re-install the battery in the modem if it was removed previously
Make sure that the Ethernet cable from the modem is connected to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the AirPort Extreme
Power up the modem and let it run 4-5 minutes buy itself
Power up the AirPort Extreme and let it run 4-5 minutes
Then power up each other network device one at a time about a minute apart
Check for a good Internet connection on the network with all devices
If still no luck, you will need to perfom a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme as follows:
Pull the power plug from the back of the AirPort Extreme
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it another 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back in to the AirPort Extreme
Release the reset button and allow 25-30 seconds for the AirPort Extreme to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Then open AirPort Utility end reconfigure the AirPort Express again.

  • Early 2011 MBP 17 Random Shutdown and Battery Behavior

Hi all, new to the forums here.
I recently purchased a refurbished early 2011 MBP 17' 2.2 Ghz i7 with 8gb and 10.7.5. Out of the box, machine looked great, but I noticed that the power cable was different than the one I had for my early 2011 MBP 15' I have for work. This raised an immediate redflag (buying from a refurb site outside of apple is always a cause for concern IMO) so I abstained from using that charger until I knew a little more. I plugged in the machine and booted it up and everything worked great. The batter was close to 100%, so after charging for approximately 20 min, I unplugged it, and the laptop immediately died. I powered it back on, and the harddrive began to spin for a few seconds, then the same result, total loss of power. Started up again, and I was able to boot into OS X and play around for a bit for a period of time before again, shut down.
For the next few days, same story. I was able to at one point, drain the battery completely and do a full cycle charge. The first time I did this, no change in behavior. Again, a few days later, I was able to drain the battery and perform a full cycle charge, but this time, a major change in behvior. Since the second full cycle charge, I have had absolutely no power problems. I haven't really "pushed" my MBP to see if fully utilizing the CPU/RAM/GPU will produce the similar results I had early, but it appears that everything is working great.
Here a few interesting notes to my situation.
When I was first operating the system (when plugged in, there were no shutdowns, only while on the battery) I pulled up my system report, and noticed that my battery cycle was very low (~5). This seemed odd, because I had opted for a used battery instead of a new one.
Prior to reinstalling Mountain Lion, my volume up key would trigger a few strange events. The screen for briefly get quite bright, then all open applications + the doc and widgets would restart (similar to killing explorer.exe in the windows task manager).
Since performing the fresh install, I have had abslutely no issue with my MBP and I love it, its a beautiful machine. However, as I purchased refurb, I'm hesitant to proceed (I will exceed my return period in ~2 weeks) without knowing my machine is in prime working condition. I have read issues about early 2011 models having issues with batteries and GPUs, but my symptoms were dissimilar to those described by others with those particular issues.
    Any thoughts?
I have a genius appointment tomorrow evening for a general diagnostics check, but if others have experienced these issues, I would appreciate some input.

  • MBP 2011 died and having problems reinstalling Mac OS

    Hello,
Having problems trying to make my MBP start working again...
    Tech info:
Early 2011 MBP, 10.6.6 preinstalled Mac OS X
    2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
    8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
    256GB Solid State Drive
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
MacBook Pro 17-inch Hi-Resolution Antiglare Widescreen Display
Was full updated up to date 3-4 days ago, so probably it was 10.6.7 before the crash.
I am pretty new to Macs and english is not my first language, so please excuse me if i use wrong terminology. Thanks.
It is pretty long story, the problem is - i can not install Mac OS X and make it work. The at the moment description of the situation is in Part 6, so you might want to skip parts 1-5, although reading those might be needed to understand the source of the problem or some details.
    The Story:
Everything worked great for about a month but then multi-language kernel panic windows asking me to reboot computer poped up. Reboot didnt help and it kept asking me for more and more reboots after like 1 minute after it logs in into Mac Os.
I had 3 programms(among others) installed: Kaspersky(fully updated trial), Parallels(activated a month age oem version, runing Windows 7 as a virtual machine without using Bootcamp) and virtualbox(activated 2 weeks ago, not being used or opened for ~10 days).
Part 1 - After logging into Mac OS 2 messages always pop'ed up:
    1) Kaspersky couldnt lunch in previous Mac OS startup(not current)
    2) Parallels message: Its time to choose either to use trial Parallels or to enter activation key. Thats really weird because it was activated a month ago, was fully updated and worked great every day. When i tried to activate it again it just didnt accept the key which was accepted last time: the icon was still grey and not clickable, rechecked 10 times at that moment.
Ok, decided to uninstall both Kaspersky and Parallels via Safe Mode. Safe Mode is working fine. Removed programms by dragging them from application folder to trash can. Worked fine. Logged into normal mode. No messages appear except the "Hello, you had kernel last time", but still Kernel appear in 2-3 minutes. Logging in 32b mode(by pressing 32 while booting up) doesn't help either.
Part 2 - Rebooted. Booted from boot DVD and used Disk utility - nothing is wrong.
Went to safe mode again. Found Kernel Log and it showed me that the source of the error was some file of VirtualBox(at least it has virtualbox in its name. Virtualbox itself, again, wasn't launched for like 10 days) located in /extension folder. Removed virtualbox program by dragging it from applications folder to trash. Worked fine, but those files in /extension folder weren't deleted. I am pretty new to Macs, so i wasn't sure if those are really VirtualBox programm's files or Mac OS system files, so i decided to reboot and check if the problem still not fixed.
Result: You cant boot neither in normal mode or in Safe mode. It just doesnt react on anything.
    No backups. Great.
Part 3. Booted via boot DVD. Worked fine. Checked if disc was ok - it wasn't ok. Tried to repair - cant repair, suggests me to reinstall.
Made a backup on external HDD(have it atm, so iа you need any info i can get from that backup to help you guys understand what happened - ask and i will give it to you asap).
Erased internal HDD with zeroes(1 row), it still has 4 files on it(around 300 mb), probably those are the files copied from Boot DVD, but i am not sure.
Part 4. Tried to install Mac OS from boot DVD. File system is for Mac os with journaled option activated. Installation process starts fine but at some point(around 25-30% while telling me its around 30 minutes left) the error message appears telling mу the installation couldn't be continued because it cant copy some files from DVD(no particullar files mentioned). Advising me to reboot and try again. Same thing happens always.
DVD disk was never used and even not unpacked before, looks fine...
Part 5. Inserted the boot DVD in another mac, made a copy via disk utility in mac os(without booting using this disc), copied it to external drive where the backup is. So there are 2 files on external drive: backup.dmg and starupDVD.dmg.
Pulled in the external hdd to MBP and tried clicking option key to choose him to boot from HDD. Nothing happens, just mouse appears without any windows where i can choose the boot option. Weird. Tried all 3 usb ports, same problem. Tried to put the DVD disk and click option key - both mouse and window appears, but only DVD boot option avaivable.
Tried to reset RAM by clicking Command-Option-P-R keys. Reset went fine(the sound and so on), but it didn't effect on anything.
Part 6(this very moment): So here i am. Have erased internal HDD with 4 files in it(around 300 mb, dont know what), boot DVD which came along with MBP with 10.6.6 MaсOS, external HDD with the same DVD and backup.
Disk utility says my internal HDD is ok.
Clicking option key doesnt make my MBP see external HDD while it is plugged in any usb port, only mouse appears. Same option key sees dvd disk if it is plugged in and boots normally.
You can see and work with external HDD if you boot from boot DVD.
Installation process starts both fine on internal and external HDDs. On internal it crashed with "cant copy files" message at ~20-30%(~30 minutes left), on external the screen just turns grey with moveable mouse on it without any messages at around 30%(~40 minutes left).
External HDD - Western Digital My Passport Essential SE 1TB USB 3.0
Internal HDD - 256gb SSD which came from Apple (sorry for calling it internal HDD)
    Think its pretty much it...
What should i do to make this thing work? Pretty much desperate already.
    Thank You for any help.
    Sincerely yours,
    Alexander.

Just one more thing - the description of what i did while first Kernel appeared:
Happened 2 days ago. Wasn't turning it off for like a day, only sleep mode by closing it. Worked fine all day, wasn't doing anything, except for checking mail 2-3 times and having windows 7 virtual machine opened but doing nothing, everything was going fine. Then closed it without turning off.
Opened 3-4 hours later, everything was working fine for 30 minutes of checking mail, then Kernel appeared. After that pretty much everything i did is described in part 1-5.
Note: all the time MBP was connected to internet via wifi, so updates to both MBP and virtual machine of all programs were possible.
I only shared downloads and desktop folders, so windows couldn't have access to system folder of Mac Os.
    Hope this might help...Thanks again.

  • AEBS and Linksys working separately from cable internet

    Hello,
I have searched the forums and could not find the answer to my question. I currently have a Linksys a/b/g wireless router setup in my home and it's working fine. We have a Dell notebook with a Linksys G wireless card and a brand new MacBook Pro. I would like to take advantage of wireless N speed on my MBP and would like to get an AEBS. I have read that if a computer using wireless G is one the same AEBS network that all computers will only run at G speeds. The Dell notebook is not worth upgrading to an N wireless card, so I was wondering if I could use both my linksys router and AEBS together - the dell running off the Linksys and MBP off the AEBS. Can this work?
I have cable internet and this is how I think I should set things up: Cable modem to the AEBS, ethernet AEBS to Linksys. Since one will be using the N band and the other the G band will I get interference?
Any suggestions would be very welcome. Thank you

Yes, this will work and it's what I'm currently doing now, only I am using an express unit for my main G base station.
One router connects to your cable or dsl modem and the other is wired into the first. You end up with two separate wireless networks. You should give them different names to avoid confusion and different channels to avoid interference but if you set the AEBS to 5GHz this should take care of that. Set it so that it only supports N connections.
The second router in the chain should have DHCP and NAT turned off. The first router will handle all of this. If you have trouble figuring out how to set "bridge" mode correctly on the Linksys you can swith that to the main and plug the AEBS unit into that, if the Linksys has a built-in switch, like the AEBS does.

  • OS9 iMac and cable internet

Hello, all. I have two iMacs. One has OS9.0.4 and we used to have dial up internet for that one. Then we bought a new iMac, and we have high-speed cable internet for that computer. I'd like to get a splitter so that we can have both iMacs on the internet at once. When I plug the cat 5 cable into the OS9 computer, I can't seem to get the settings right to make it work. Our ISP is little help since OS9 is too old for their flow charts. Can anyone help me out?
    Thanks in advance!!

    Hi, papogi -
The setup for broadband in OS 9, cable or DSL, is much the same and usually quite simple.
First, after connecting the Cat 5 ethernet cable, restart the Mac - this ensures that the Mac does not disable the thernet bus during the startup sequence, which many models will do if a live (powered) device is not detected on that bus.
Then make these settings in the TCP/IP control panel:
        Connect via    -to-    Ethernet
        Configure    -to-    Using DHCP Server
And that's about all that is needed. A restart at that point may or may not be necessary.
Things that can interfere interfere with an ethernet connection include -
    • AppleTalk. Even if AppleTalk is disabled it can sometimes block the bus. If you do not have a printer connected by ethernet which needs AppleTalk, set AppleTalk to use a different bus. You can make that change in the AppleTalk control panel.
    • The cable itself. If neither the modem nor the Mac have an auto-switching ethernet port (if your Mac can use OS 9.0.4 it is probably too old to have one), then if you are not using an intermediate device such as a hub, switch, or router, you must use a Crossover-type Cat 5 cable - a Patch-type (also called Straight-through) cable will not work. Most cables sold will be Patch-type if not otherwise specified or requested.
Unfortunately the two kinds of cables look alike. If the one you have is not marked, you would need to examine the color coding of the wires in the end connectors to determine which it is -
    Ethernet Cable: Color Coding Standard
In order to use the same modem with more than one computer you will need to use a multi-port device between the two. This can be an ethernet hub, an ethernet switch, or an ethernet router.
Given that you have two machines with different speed capabilities (your older iMac is probably rated for 100mbit, while the newer iMac is rated for 1000mbit (gigabit) speed), using a hub is not a good idea - it will probably slow down the newer machine.
A switch or a router will detect the speed capabilities of each machine and connect at the best speed for each.
Given that a router may require additional set up and configuration needs, the simplest solution would be to use a switch. I use one with two G4s of different speeds, and it is easy - plug and play.
On the other hand, a router can often provide additional security in the form of a hardware-based firewall.
Regardless, when using an interposing hub, switch, or router, use Cat 5 Patch-type cables for all connections.
