  • Finder window persisting after TM browser Cancelled

I'm curious to know if people find the Finder window persisting annoying after Cancelling the TM browser ?
I quite frequently review files within the TM browser. Sometimes I will restore a file or two or simply browse etc. When I'm finished and Cancel a Finder window always sits on my display and I have to quit it. This extra action is a real time waster for me and I wish this Finder window wouldn't persist as I have no good reason to use it for anything.
Do others feel the same way ?
I'm thinking of sending an enhancement request to Apple to have this persistent Finder window not show after cancelling out of TM browser.
    Thanks...

Would you please explain the reason why you think this Finder window is useful.
I'm not wanting to have to maintain yet another work-around for something that appears to me as an oversight in the TM browser's Cancel process. During my TM beta testing this Finder window did not persist as it does with the Leopard GM and so I'm assuming it was either designed to be useful or was somehow forgotten to be removed.
    Thanks...

  • Finder Window Launchs after Login.

Need to figure out why Finder launches window immediately after Log-on. Desktop appears briefly then Finder window opens to Macintosh HD.
Doesn't hurt anything just irritating have to close Finder Window after every Start-up and/or Log-on.
    Ideas appreciated!
    Thanx

    Hi,
Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab.
    And go to /Library/Startup Items.
Might be something in the Login Items or Startup Items that requires the Finder.
If not, go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the *com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash.
~ (Tilde) represents your Home folder.
    Restart your Mac.

  • Finder window issues after ML upgrade

I have noticed a couple of funnies since upgrading to Mtn Lion from Snow Leopard, and wondered about them.
    1.  No flippy triangles appear in the Finder List View for Applications or Documents.  They appear in sub-folders of these, and also Downloads, Home Folder, etc.
    2.  If, in Applications or Documents, I press the right arrow key (which is the keyboard equivalent of pressing the flippy triangle if there were one), I get a new folder opening directly below with a name such as "Other" or "Name".  If I move to this new folder and press the arrow key again, the contents of the original folder are listed - all without any indentation - which is very confusing to read.  If I try to trash the new folder, I get an error messaage Error Code -5058.  If I close the Finder window and reopen it, the new folder and its sub-contents have disappeared and all is normal again.     Right Arrow key operation in other folder list views is OK.
    3.  The "Date Added" for all of my Applications shows as the date and time I did the ML upgrade, not when the App was originally added.  Date Added fields in all other windows are blank.  I would expect all of these to respect the original dates.
    And I am only up to page 50 of "The Missing Manual" . . . . . .
Has anybody else seen these or similar things, and would I expect to see them fixed in an up-issue?
    Thanks.

I connected a external harddisk to my iMac and did a complete backup and it worked perfect. I tried my Timecapsule again, but the same problem again, so I deleted my Timecapsuledisk and did a new full backup, and now it works fine. Fseventd is now at a normal state too.
After this, I moved my Timecapsule to its usual place and connected my other external hardisk to it and made them both as Timemachine backupdisks. Timecapsule went fine, but the other harddisk started to do a full backup again, strange, and it takes about 17 hours to do it via WiFi. But I just let it work and see how it goes. Can anyone tell me why it does a full backup again just because I have connected it via Timecapsule?
Right now, my Finder works better, but I will wait until the full backup is finnished before I do some tests.
I have also made a verification and repair of both harddisks with Disktool, it reported a fault in my Timecapsule harddisk before I did the full backup..

  • Removing icons from Finder window sidebar after 10.6.7

Not a major calamity, but since upgrading to 10.6.7 I don't seem to be able to drag icons off the Finder window sidebar to remove them. In earlier versions of SL they would disappear in a small puff of smoke.
Right-clicking and contextual menu command does work though to delete the icons. Two machines - 24" and 27" iMacs, no exotic third-party software.
Curious if anybody else has seen this or if there's a fix?

Use command-drag, changed in latest update credit to I forget who.

  • Finder window unresponsive after a search on external drive.

    Hi guys,
I have an odd problem. I have an external HD full of music and whenever I want to play one, I just search for it in finder and drag&drop it to iTunes. However, I'm having issues with it on my new MacBook Air. Whenever I search the drive for files, they appear normally, but I can't drag them! Highlighing works OK, so does double-clicking or cmd+O, but I can't move them to a playlist. It's the same with any files, not just .mp3s - they cannot be dragged out of the finder window. Scrolling is also wonky, but moving between files using arrows works fine.
Please note that this works perfectly fine when searching the computer's HD.
Is this a glitch of some sort, or is the computer preventing me from doing it for some reason? Any explanation/fix? I'm running 10.9.3 with all the updates; the HD is a 1TB Transcend, ExFAT formatted.
    Thanks!

How much space do you have on the Air? Most Air users do not have the space to keep a big iTunes Library on the internal drive.
They would still be on one place on the external drive. When you get a new mp3 import into iTunes and it will be saved on the external drive.
I'm not a cross platform users so not sure what the issue is with copying the data.

  • My mid-2011 MacBook Air bricks itself after 10.7.2 update

I have a new MacBook Air (11") that was working just great, until today.  Today, I used Software Update to install the updates, which included 10.7.2 as well as the recue partition update.
I did everything you're supposed to do, and when it rebooted, the gray screen comes up, and it shows the spinny doohickey on the bottom showing that it's working.  Then, suddenly, up pops a big "no" icon (the circle with the slash through it) after about 60 seconds.
It simply doesn't do anything after that.
Hard-power-off, wait, power-on, repeat, same thing.
So I reboot with cmd-R to get the rescue partition. It works fine; I ask it to re-install Mac OS X, which then takes about 45 minutes (argh).  Finally, Mac OS X is back, the machine is nicely booted up, all my files are there, everything is good.. But of course, the reinstall took me back to 10.7.1.
All I want to do is upgrade my fricking iPhone to IOS 5.0, but I can't do that without knowing I can sync which requires iCloud which of course requires 10.7.2.  So I *have* to re-do the upgrade.
Back to Software Update, back to installing 10.7.2. And .. 20 minutes later .. back to bricked MacBook Air.
What a waste of my time. What a failure, Apple. I'm very very very very very unhappy that I've wasted so much time just to update my damned iPhone to IOS 5. I'm still without an update. Now I'm trying to figure out how to move my iTunes to another machine -- not nearly as obvious as it should be.  ARGH. I'm going to throw this MacBook Air off the balcony in about 10 minutes. :-(
    Thanks for listening.
      Steve

Wow, you're right -- I can't believe it. I just really can't believe they would screw up so badly, yet when I search for "10.7.2 filevault" I don't find more than a couple of articles about it on the web (including this thread). Why on earth wouldn't Apple have put up some kind of warning about this? I can't believe it, really. It's insane.
On my newly-functional 10.7.2 MBA, I wanted to test your theory and so I turned on filevault 2 and encrypted the main disk again.  It of course wanted me to reboot. So I rebooted. And *blammy* -- same error / boot failure.  Wow.  Also, interestingly, even on a working 10.7.2 system, you can't mount a USB drive that was encrypted using Filevault 2 encryption (in Disk Utility, e.g., as a "Mac OS X, journalled, encrypted" volume that was encrypted with DiskUtility on Lion 10.7.1).  I still have a 10.7.1 machine that I will not upgrade until I can at least decrypt the disk -- but right now, Disk Utility tells me it fails decrypting the external USB disk so I'm hosed!!! ARGH.
Now, going back to the booting problem after upgrade -- for anyone's reference who's still keeping score -- you can easily recover from the booting problem with upgrading a Filevault 2 root drive: Power-cycle the machine and then hold down cmd-r to bring up the Lion Recovery application.  Within Lion Recovery, choose "Disk Utility", and then click on the (as yet unmounted, still encrypted) root hard drive to select it. Then go to the File menu, and choose "Turn off encryption" for this disk.  It then prompts you for the password, and if you enter it, *blammy* you're back up and running again.
In my case, the disk had only just begun encrypting so the action was instant, and then once it confirmed the disk was now decrypted, I simply chose "Restart" from the Apple menu, and I was back in business (no hairy re-installs to deal with).  If this is an already-encrypted volume, presumably it'll take you a bit longer (the normal 45-minutes to 2 hours) to decrypt it.  But at least no more installing software -- it'll "just work".
Maybe I'll go post a simpler version of these instructinos on the other threads, but this is the simplest fix -- just turn off filevault 2 from within Lion Recovery, basically, and that fixes the boot problems.
Apple, if you're listening, you really really really need to say something to your users so they know. Many many many MBA users are likely to have still not upgraded. You can prevent them from hating you and your products by making sure they don't screw the pooch here.  Short version: Mid-2011 MacBook Airs running Filevault 2 WILL NOT BOOT after 10.7.2 update; so users should turn off Filevault2 before upgrading.

  • Cannot Print to Windows Printer after Security 2008-002 update

I am unable to print to a Canon image runner 3380 printer on a Windows network after installing Security update 2008-002. Whenever I try to print I get the following error: On Hold Authentication Required. I can click on the Resume button in the print queue and a box pops up to enter my username and password. I've tried entering my user name and password but it does no good. I've also tried reinstalling the printers which also does me no good.
This printer is located on a Windows 2003 server that is setup as a Domain Controler.

I did some searching -- more info: This is apparently due to an upgrade to CUPS, which is the Common Unix Printing System (available to administer directly at: http://localhost:631/ ) This is the way to add a printer if you feel especially geeky.
    There is another discussion: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6914585&#6914585
about this, but apparently it is not a resolution, just a description of the problem.
So, I really don't want to deinstall the 2008-002 update, if I can help it. I already installed version 1.1, which did not resolve the issue. I would like to be able to print to my Windows-Active Directory printers without resorting to IP printing. It sounds like this is something Apple has to fix, from the discussions I read. Is this true? And if so, any ideas about how long Apple will take to fix it?

  • Finder wont open after Firefox 4.01 update

    Hello,
Just updated firefox and now my finder will not display on my desktop when I click on the finder logo or when I use "command n". The only way I can get a finder window open is to right click any app in the dock and choose "show in finder" .
    I have already tried:
    Deleting the com.apple.finder.plist
    Deinstalling firefox
Finder seems to be working fine in a different user on the same computer.
    Any suggestions???
    Thanks!

  • 2011 MBP bootcamp windows 7 is black!

While I have already installed win7 pro with bootcamp, this is a big problem
1st is while my MPB is booting, it was black until the apple icon appears, then I can access my Mac OS.
2nd I can't using "press option button to choose bootdisk", the option operation does not work!!
my MBP will always black, I have to restart it to into mac os.
So I can only use "bootdisk" from system preference.
3rd While I boot from bootcamp to my windows, while windows booting it's ok. But after it appears "Welcome", the the screen was all black!!!
And this happened after I install bootcamp, before I install that, I just can't have a right screen resolution (no graphic card driver)
I also can't install the AMD graphic driver on it.

    Hi l,
I would post in the Boot Camp forum where more of those experts hang out: https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp

  • When looking for a document, there used to be a "Today" tab on the left side of the Finder window. After updating my computer with the most recent update (I think it was Mountain Lion, but I could be wrong...), the "Today" tab seems to have disappeared.

I really prefer using the "Today" tab instead of the "All My Files" tab, because it loads much faster and only shows me the documents that I want to see. Is there any possible way to get the "Today" tab back?

In Finder, go command - F. On the top left set "Kind" to Date Created, finish selecting the criteria and hot "Save" on the top right. You'll get a new smart folder with an option to add it to the sidebar.

  • 2012 MBP will not boot after 10.8.4 update

Has anyone else had problems with booting to 10.8.4?  I have a 2012 15" MBP with dual boot 10.8.4 and Win 8 via BC on a single Seagate Thin SSHD 1TB.  Win 8 will boot but the OS X drive will not even mount during boot.  I tried single user, verbose, safe, fsck, DU, recovery all to avail because the system no longer recognises the drive because it will not mount.
Now, this same thing happened two weeks ago and I eventually replaced the stock Hitachi 1TB with the aforementioned Seagate.  I am now using the Hitachi as an external drive and it is working just fine after erasing/formatting. I refuse to believe it is a HDD issue seeing how Windows still boots fine.
Does anyone out there have a long term solution?  I cannot believe that I need to completely wipe my drive every two weeks and reinstall/restore/recover my system.  I never had this problem prior to updating to 10.8.4.  Any help would be appreciated.

same **** happend to me after I updated my retina macbook pro I had to take it to the Apple store to have it reinstalled and updated

  • MBP will not reboot after 10.6.8 update attempt

This post may be a bit telescopic, since I'm posting from my phone, but here goes:
Attempted 10.6.8 update from 10.6.7 on my late 2009 MBP. It went to a blue screen and then sat on that screen with a progress wheel for over an hour. I gave up at that point and simply restarted by holding down the power button and turning back on. It then went to a gray screen with the Apple logo and a progress wheel for a few seconds and then just shut down. I repeated this several times.
Next, I booted into safe made without any problems. I went to the list of startup programs and chose to hide all of the third party apps, then rebooted into safe mode again.
Here is where I started having issues. It went to the apple logo and progress bar for a few seconds then just shut down. I attempted several safe boots and got the same result over and over.
I then put my install CD in the drive and rebooted holding down C. It went to a blank gray screen for about one minute, then spit out the CD and shut down.
I booted into verbose mode and it did a check and got several errors and then just shut down. I attempted this multiple times with the same result.
I then booted into single user mode and ran fsck -yf. It gave me several missing thread record and invalid extent entry errors followed by numbers and one line that said "Incorrect size for file GSUIcon.icns"
Not knowing what to do with this, I typed tail /var/log/system.log to pull up an error report from around the time this may have started. I'm not sure how to get that text to my phone, but it doesn't say a while lot. Basically that a "terminate was called after throwing an instance of 'Security::CssmError'" then "bpf_write(en1) failed: network is down". There is amlittle more, but none of it tells me what really happened. I can send a picture of the error report from my phone if anyone wants to see the whole thing.
At this point, I cannot boot into safe mode or from a CD, only into verbose or single user mode. Thoughts?
    Thanks folks!

    MetaKine issues with 10.6.8
MetaKine hands off,  update to 1.3.1 before attempting aninstall of 10.6.8: the old version causes a kernel panic and will notallow booting after an update.  As it loads a kernel extension, safemode also doesn't work.
Simple solution: boot OSX install DVD, run terminal from utilitiesmenu:
    code, enter and press return
    cd /Volumes/yournormalbootdisk/System/Library/Extensions
    mv HandsOff.kext /
    quit Terminal and reboot
Then load Hands off app, and run the update it finds.

  • Finder not starting after 10.5.4 update

I'm not sure if this is directly related to the 10.5.4 update since it happened a couple of days after updating.
When the computer starts up, and after I log in, the Finder just shows a blank grey background, with no windows or items on the desktop. The Menu bar is non-existent, except for the right-hand menu-bar items (battery, time, spotlight etc), which appear with no pale menu-bar background.
The Dock works, which means I can launch other apps successfully, including the Safari I'm using now. Once I have launched another app, I cannot switch to the Finder. Clicking on the Finder's icon, gives me 'Application not responding, Hide, Relaunch', but relaunching has no effect.

Nothing's changed after that. There's a couple of user accounts on the computer, and I tried deleting the com.apple.finder.plist in all of them. I've also restarted in Single User mode, and fsck-ed, put the computer into firewire target disk mode and run disk utility from another machine. No joy.
