2011 MBP having limited screen resolution in Bootcamp

Hi All,
Running Bootcamp 4.0 with Win7. Bootcamp software is installed, drivers seem to be in place.
The screen has a limited resolution though, not the full 1440 x900 that it should have. Clicking on screen resolution only shows the one option for resolution.
Any thoughts?
A few other data points, loaded the bootcamp partion up in Parallels and I get the full resolution experience.

That's odd.  Which model are you running?  13", 15", or 17"?
It's entirely possible that the Intel (13") or AMD (15"/17") video driver might not have installed properly.  Check the Device Manager (Start > right-click Computer > Manage, then click Device Manager at left of the resulting window).  If under Display Adapters you see "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter", or a "Video Controller" under Other Devices, then this may be your issue.
Running Boot Camp Setup a second time should fix this, but it's also possible that the driver CD did not burn properly and therefore the folders that contain drivers might be corrupted enough so as not to have been read during Setup.  In this case, your best bet is to burn the CD again--to a known-good CD-R.

  • Limited screen resolutions.

    Hi guys,
This is my first (and likely not my last) post asking for help
I have installed Arch on VirtualBox following the Wiki.  So far it hasn't been too bad but I think my inexperience is causing me problems setting up X11 properly.
I have installed Xorg and the Vbox guest additions, I then installed Gnome as my desktop and it all seems to boot fine.  Unfortunately I only have a choice of 3 resolutions from within Gnome itself, 640 * 480, 800 * 600 and 1024 * 768.  My main PC monitor is 1920 * 1200 and would like to use this for my Arch install.
How do I set this up?
Currently this is what my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file looks like:-
    Section "InputDevice"
            Identifier  "Mouse0"
            Driver      "vboxmouse"
            Option      "Device" "/dev/vboxguest"
            Option      "CorePointer" "yes"
    EndSection
    Section "Device"
            Identifier  "Card0"
            Driver      "vboxvideo"
    EndSection
From other xorg.conf files I have seen in the past, this looks quite bare.
I then read the Xorg wiki for Arch also and states that to create a good base config file the following command should be ran:-
    # xorg -configure
BUT!  I don't know how to quit back to a command line from Gnome and Kill the Xserver.  I press CTRL + ALT + F1 which gives me a command bash but the command 'killall X' gives me a 'no process found' error.
Phew!  That was a lot to get off my chest haha.
If anyone can give me a few pointers it would be most appreciated.
    Cheers!
    Frankie

Well no options that I can see that would do that, all I have is the ability to feed it more virtual VRAM which is currently set at 64MB.
Thanks for the help so far

  • New SSD + 8GB RAM on 2011 MBP - Having Issues

I just installed a new 128GB Vertex 4 SSD and 8GB of RAM into my late-2011 13" MacBook Pro. I did a clean install of Lion on the new drive and enabled TRIM support. Although I have seen a slight difference in performance, it is taking forever to download large files. Currently it is downloading between 200-400KB/S. It has been running for an hour and not even a fourth of the way done. When I downloaded the application before on my stock 750GB HDD it only took about 30 minutes.
What do you think is causing this major decrease in download time? Is there anything I need to do with the new SSD to improve performance?

I started to download iPhoto from the App Store but ended up pausing it because it was taking forever. I then unplugged and reset the Internet connection thinking that could be an issue. I havn't tried to resume the iPhoto download yet but I did start to download Left 4 Dead 2 off Steam. It's downloaded 3500MB out of 13000MB with a peak download rate of 910KB/S. The average has been between 400-600KB/S since I last posted.
If it is the internet then it is going to be what its going to be. Even so, is there anything else I need to do with the new SSD then? I've read about updating firmware but also read not to update it for the Vertex 4. I tried doing as much research as possible on what I needed to do for installation but this is my first time with it all.

  • Screen resolution of target system

    Hi,
My webdynpro application looks different when opened on browsers having different screen resolutions. The reason for this is that I have hardcoded the width/height specs of different UI elements. Therefore, I would like to know a mechanism by which I can get the screen resolution of the broswer opening my application, so that all the UI elements have relative dimensions.
    Regards, Sameer

    Hi Valery,
Good Reply but are you sure that it cannot happen via Webdynpro ? I do not know how standard SAP applications e.g leave request, payroll or performane management apps all look the same even on different screen resolutions.
Also can we read a cookie stored in browser via webdynpro ? If yes, what is the way to do that ?
    Regards, Sameer.

  • Screen resolution on Win 7 set to 1920x1080 instead of 1920x1200 (MBP 17 early 2011)

After performing a SMC reset on my MacBook Pro 17 (early 2011), the screen resolution of my Windows 7 on the bootcamp partition was set to 1920x1080, instead of 1920x1200. On Control Panel, the option for the 1920x1200 resolution doesn't appear. How can I fix this? Reinstall BootCamp 3.2 64-bit? Thanks.

Try command-shift on boot up. If all else fails boot from your OS installer disk and run Repair Disk from Disk Utility.

  • External screen resolution on 15"MBP

    Hi there,
I know a lot of us are suffering from a real range of different problems with 10.5, this is the first problem i've come across since updating, i own a 15" MBP and do my updates at work (not connected up to an external display), i've got a monitor at home which i use to retouch on with a screen resolution of 1920x1200. Since updating to 10.5.2 i've had a problem with first getting the mac to power on when the lid is shut and tapping either the mouse or the keyboard to get it out of sleep, and most importantly when i have the lid up now and connected to the external so that both monitors are on, it cannot recognize different screen resolutions, so the external is stuck on 1440x900 with no option to go to 1920x1200. Does anyone have an idea of how i could resolve the problem i'm having? Please don't tell me i'm going to have to wait for an update........
    Thanks for your time,
    Al

shut down your macbook... open the lid with external still connected and restart with lid open... then immediately close the lid.
    see if that doesn't help.

  • 2011 MBP bootcamp windows 7 is black!

While I have already installed win7 pro with bootcamp, this is a big problem
1st is while my MPB is booting, it was black until the apple icon appears, then I can access my Mac OS.
2nd I can't using "press option button to choose bootdisk", the option operation does not work!!
my MBP will always black, I have to restart it to into mac os.
So I can only use "bootdisk" from system preference.
3rd While I boot from bootcamp to my windows, while windows booting it's ok. But after it appears "Welcome", the the screen was all black!!!
And this happened after I install bootcamp, before I install that, I just can't have a right screen resolution (no graphic card driver)
I also can't install the AMD graphic driver on it.

    Hi l,
I would post in the Boot Camp forum where more of those experts hang out: https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

1: Software Update fully under the Apple menu.
2: Check the status of your plug-ins and update (works for all browsers) also install Firefox and see if your problems continue. You should always have at least two browsers on the machine just in case one fails.

  • 2011 MBP 13" using external DVD drive for Bootcamp

I am trying to install Windows 7 on my bootcamp partition via an external Samsung Slim Drive (I swapped my internal with another hard drive). Boot camp assistant recognizes the drive and windows disk in OSX and sets it as boot volume prior to rebooting.
PROBLEM: After reboot, my mac hangs at a DOS-like screen with a blinking underscore as if waiting for user input (which it doesn't allow). I've installed many times using this method, but this is the first time using the 2011 macbook pro. So I assume there may be an issue with the chipset or something?
I should also note that it *does show* up as bootable when I hold the alt/option key during boot.

I've researched this problem heavily and I think I've found the definitive answer.
The 2011 MBP will not install via bootcamp using ANY external device. Also reFIT does not work either, so don't waste your time there. At least it didnt' work for me.
The only way to install Win7 is with an internal disc drive, since that isn't possible I came up with an alternative.
What I did was install Win7 via bootcamp on another Mac machine, used WinClone to clone the Win7 partition, then I took that clone and transferred it to my MBP.
    This method worked perfectly.

  • Screen resolution is limited to 1280 x 720

    Hello.
I just got my new iMac 27 3.2 Mhz
The screen resolution is limited to 1280 x 720.
I reinitialized the PR Ram without success.
No other option is displayed in the preferences. someone has already this problem ?

Before taking the Mac to an Apple Store, you could call AppleCare who may be able to offer a solution, or organise an exchange of machine, that would hopefully save you the trouble of carting it around.

  • Screen resolution for 13' MBP for Parallels?

anyone happen have any good ideas for settings for screen resolution of my windows virtual machine on my 13" macbook pro? I'm trying 1440 x 1020 and everything seems stretched and rasterized.
    TIA.

The 13" MBP has a maximum screen resolution of 1280 x 800. Nothing can push it higher, because that's how many physical pixels the screen contains.

There are 14.1 WXGA+ LED models available right now. Check the ThinkPad Reference (tabook) and search. That option is just apparently not available in CTO (Custom To Order) systems from the Lenovo Store at the moment.
This brings up the question: How can you order a pre-configured ThinkPad like those listed in tabook? Do you have to buy from a reseller? Why can't you order one from the online Lenovo Store? (Maybe you can, but it's not obvious to me how to do it, at least for the U.S. online store...)

  • BootCamp on Late 2011 MBP Question.

I don't know where to start but here goes. I've had boot camp w/ Win7 32bit on my MBP for sometime now with the original HD. I upgraded to a SSD, and removed the optical drive and put the original HDD there.  recently decided to upgrade the original HDD to 1TB and CarbonCopy Cloner does not support cloning Boot Camp partitions. So heres what I did to get BC back on my MBP. I cloned my SSD to the new HDD. Removed the SSD and reinstalled the optical drive so I can use BC to partition and install Win7 on the new 1TB HD. The reason why I did that was because my MBP does not support booting from external USB CD-ROM. Now after I got Win7 up and running I removed the optical drive, moved the 1TB HDD back over and reinstalled my SSD as the main boot disk.
Now here comes my real question. Can I wipe the OS X Partition on the 1TB disk or will it cause problems with BootCamp ?
    Thanks in advance

  • 2011 MBP i7 running slow. Hardware limitations?

I have a early 2011 MBP 15" with 2.3 GHz Core i7, 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HD. I purposely put in as much RAM as possible as I usually run a lot of apps simulataneously.
I will usually have either a number of Microsoft Office (2011) programs open at once, Windows 7 64 bit running in Parallels 7 (also running a number of apps), or a combination of both. I have noticed that my computer seems to be running fairly slow, especially given the i7 processor and the RAM upgrade. When booting up windows in parallels, it can sometimes take upwards of 15 minutes to get the windows side of things to work. While windows is booting up, the mac side tends to be extremely slow, pinwheeling quite a bit. Additionally, Microsoft Outlook 2011 is almost unusable on the mac side of things (I realize this may be a result of the software). Even after  shut down Windows, the mac side can still tend to run fairly slow.
750 GB HD with 100 GB partitions for Windows. WIndows HD is 70GB/100GB used.
Designated 4GB RAM for mac side/4GB for windows.
When viewing activity monitor, the processors are rarely above 50%, usually down around 10%, or less. RAM is almost always fully utilized (less than 20MB free).
My question is: do you think this is a software related issue, as it relates to windows/parrallels/microsoft programs? Or is this a hardware limited issue? Do I need more RAM? Could I possible benefit from an SSD/Hybrid drive? I use my computer for work and for personal use, so it is essential that I am able to use both Windows and Mac simultaneously.
    Thanks for the help!

Also... be sure to balance your allocation of RAM between your Windows virtual machine and OS X.  If you allocate too much to your virtual machine, OS X will take a significant performance hit... which would in-turn cause your virtual machine to slow to a crawl.  Depending on what you're doing, you should probably not set your virtual machine to more than 4GB.  The amount of RAM you allocate to the virtual machine is basically taken whether you need it or not.  For example, if you allocate 6GB to your virtual machine, as soon as you launch the virtual machine, regardless of what applications you are running in it, only 2GB will be available to OS X.  Making sure both OS X and your virtual machine have enough RAM allocated to them is important.
If you're RAM has been balanced in your settings for your virtual machine and your performance is still poor, you may need to go with more RAM.  8GB is generally more than enough for most people, but your usage / expectations are on the high side.  Keeping in mind everything you have running... opening this applications, modifying this file, etc... you're also working your hard drive pretty hard.  An SSD would make a significant difference in performance.  Of course there is a premium associated with a high capacity SSD (which I would imagine you would want).

  • Early 2011 MBP stuck on gray screen, verbose mode shows SMC error too

    Hi!
I have and early 2011 MBP, running on OS 10.7.5 is continuously stuck at grey screen upon start-up.
I tried the steps as mentioned in Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup - Apple Support article apart from reinstalling OS X. The laptop started after every step, but then stopped again. I tried SMC update, that also worked for once, and on the second start up I ended up with a blue screen. During a later attempt, it worked again for a while, but ended with a distorted graphics after 15 mins. AHT (short version) doesn't show any hardware errors. Now the laptop doesn't go further than grey screen at all, and after a minute or so there's a heavy fan activity. The verbose mode also shows and SMC error, smc: : smcinithelper error: mmio regmap ==null - fall back to old smc mode (AHT Shows SMC version as 1.69f4)
    What do you advise?

    Try this:
Reset the SMC and the NVRAM:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063
    Then try a safe boot:

    Any success?
    Ciao.
