2011 MBP i7 running slow. Hardware limitations?
I have a early 2011 MBP 15" with 2.3 GHz Core i7, 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HD. I purposely put in as much RAM as possible as I usually run a lot of apps simulataneously.
I will usually have either a number of Microsoft Office (2011) programs open at once, Windows 7 64 bit running in Parallels 7 (also running a number of apps), or a combination of both. I have noticed that my computer seems to be running fairly slow, especially given the i7 processor and the RAM upgrade. When booting up windows in parallels, it can sometimes take upwards of 15 minutes to get the windows side of things to work. While windows is booting up, the mac side tends to be extremely slow, pinwheeling quite a bit. Additionally, Microsoft Outlook 2011 is almost unusable on the mac side of things (I realize this may be a result of the software). Even after shut down Windows, the mac side can still tend to run fairly slow.
750 GB HD with 100 GB partitions for Windows. WIndows HD is 70GB/100GB used.
Designated 4GB RAM for mac side/4GB for windows.
When viewing activity monitor, the processors are rarely above 50%, usually down around 10%, or less. RAM is almost always fully utilized (less than 20MB free).
My question is: do you think this is a software related issue, as it relates to windows/parrallels/microsoft programs? Or is this a hardware limited issue? Do I need more RAM? Could I possible benefit from an SSD/Hybrid drive? I use my computer for work and for personal use, so it is essential that I am able to use both Windows and Mac simultaneously.
Thanks for the help!
Also... be sure to balance your allocation of RAM between your Windows virtual machine and OS X. If you allocate too much to your virtual machine, OS X will take a significant performance hit... which would in-turn cause your virtual machine to slow to a crawl. Depending on what you're doing, you should probably not set your virtual machine to more than 4GB. The amount of RAM you allocate to the virtual machine is basically taken whether you need it or not. For example, if you allocate 6GB to your virtual machine, as soon as you launch the virtual machine, regardless of what applications you are running in it, only 2GB will be available to OS X. Making sure both OS X and your virtual machine have enough RAM allocated to them is important.
If you're RAM has been balanced in your settings for your virtual machine and your performance is still poor, you may need to go with more RAM. 8GB is generally more than enough for most people, but your usage / expectations are on the high side. Keeping in mind everything you have running... opening this applications, modifying this file, etc... you're also working your hard drive pretty hard. An SSD would make a significant difference in performance. Of course there is a premium associated with a high capacity SSD (which I would imagine you would want).

Late 2011 MBP i7 gets slow with and after Aperture
My first post, please pardon my ignorance. I have read similar threads but I believe my situation is a bit different.
Anyway, my late 2011 MBP i7 4GB ram, running on SL gets very slow after I open/browse/edit in Aperture. The system does page out to 1.3 gb. When using Safary and email, it becomes very painfull even after I close out the Aperture. The whole system becomes laggy and menus become delayed. The only solution is to reboot and my mac is back like new until I open the Aperture again. Every program is up to date and only about 160gb out of 500gb HDD being used.
Heres what I've done so far:
1. long hardware test checked ok
2. NVRAM reset
3. downloaded Kasperski and found no viruses
4. rebuild/repair aperture database
5. ordered 8gb crucial ram, should be in in a few days
Is it due to not having enough RAM? My previous 2006 MBP Core 2 Due was almost as fast running on Lion and 4GB ram. I would expect a significant speed increase on my 4 core i7, but unfortunately it's not the case.Paging out to 1.3 gig effectively means that a lot of stuff is sitting in virtual memory on your hard disk. The i7 is great for improving the speed of whatever is in memory, but anything that is paged out is limited to the performance of the HDD and SATA bus.
The cheapest and most effective first step is to max out your RAM. It's a modest investment that will benefit you immensely. The second step is to replace mechanical disks with SSDs. Currently, this is a pricy proposition, but the performance improvement can be nearly 100% over a mechanical drive system.
At the end of the day, it's about how much money you want to spend to go as fast as you can afford. -
MBP Periodically Running Slow After Just 1 Month
The other day, my computer randomly started to struggle, as if the frame rate was dragging. Video through VLC worked fine, however. After restarting (shut down took much longer than usual), it was solved. Typing seemed slowed as well.
And today, the Quick Look Helper began sucking up my quad core to around 15%. I reset the PRAM and that seemed to solve the problem for now, but it's been struggling for a while -- stuttering on flash videos and what not.
However, the computer running slow has been a persistent issue nonetheless, and yes I've accounted for my limited 4GB RAM, but it's struggled purely on Chrome on occasion.
Any ideas for why I'm seeing bottlenecking like this?Try these:
First - go to system preferences - startup disk and select your hard drive as the startup drive (if already selected - select it again) - and restart your Macbook.
Second - once you've done the first one - go to disk utility and verify your disk permissions - repair if errors are found and restart your Macbook once the repairs are done.
Last - if none of the above works for you, do a SMC RESET.
good luck -
Late 2011 macbook pro running slow
Hi my macbook has been running pretty sluggish lately. I haven't upgraded anything since I've purchased it. Any thoughts? I just ran an EtreCheck a few minutes hoping it helps. Thanks in advance!

I have tried everything I can find on the web, as well as everything that I can think of, to try and fix my issues currently happening with my Mac Mini 2011. Anymore, it can take up to thirty-seconds for application to open. I also have unresponsive applications and severe lag to the point of where I can hear the hard-drive constantly revving whereas it used to not. Again, I have tried everything: reinstalled applications, deleted cache, repaired Permissions, etc. My Mac Mini used to run great, and I know it still should. Please someone assist me.
-willPlease read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. It will be slow, but application launches should not take as long as you say they do.
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
Early 2011 MBP is pausing, slowing down, ideas?
Yes. Another “my mac is slow” thread. I swear I’ve read about all I could before posting, I’m just out of ideas. :/
Early 2011 MacBook Pro
OSX 10.9.2
2 GHz Intel Core i7
4 GB Ram, usually about 50% is in use
Using 50% of 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200
Over the past year, it seems to be taking a lot longer to start up and often “pauses” for simple tasks like right clicking on a misspelled word, opening preview, waking from sleep, etc. It doesn’t fully lock up, the hard drive doesn’t seem to be crunching away extra hard but the pinwheel appears for 15-60 seconds at times where it should be instant. The CPU / RAM use don't spike at those times either which is odd.
I’ve kept up on running OnyX, my desktop only has two folders, I don’t run any additional wild add-ons, my startup only has four items. My hard drive is about half full and I haven’t changed any hardware since it was purchased it.
I'm just not sure what I can test / try...
Thanks for any ideas. When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

You may need the "gopro" agent if you've a "GoPro" camera, and you may need the "sierrawireless" and "novatelwireless" if you use a Sierra Wireless device of some sort and if you actually need the novatel drivers, but I think that you can safely get rid of the Seagate drivers (unless you need them for some sort of NAS???) and the other stuff.
Give a call back and tell us what you actually have and actually need. Most of it just looks like junk!

MBP 13 running slow after one month
I purchased a MBP about a month ago and over the past two weeks I have noticed that it has run much slower than normal. Long startup times, frequent SBBODs when opening/navigating between programs (Safari, Microsoft Office, Spotify, aka just about every program I have), frame rate drops and lags in apps, etc. It's honestly slower than the previous three-year old laptop I had before this and that has made a TERRIBLE impression on me to the point where I'm already considering selling this laptop.
Specs:
13 inch (non-retina)
2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
4GB 1600MHz memory
500GB 5400-rpm hard drive
Intel HD Graphics 4000Try these:
First - go to system preferences - startup disk and select your hard drive as the startup drive (if already selected - select it again) - and restart your Macbook.
Second - once you've done the first one - go to disk utility and verify your disk permissions - repair if errors are found and restart your Macbook once the repairs are done.
Last - if none of the above works for you, do a SMC RESET.
good luck -
MBP 2008 Running Slow and Diskutility problems on Lion
I have a 2008 MBP with 4gb of RAM. I upgraded via fresh install to Lion and ever since I've had this computer running literally 1/2 the speed it did on Snow Leopard. I've tried Googling and done everything everyone was saying to do but no changes.
I also noticed that no matter what I do, when I run disk utility and check permissions it comes back with files that have problems but nothing I do will actually repair them. I'm doubting this has anything todo with my current problems but wondering if anyone knows anything that might help.
I'd also like to know if there is any way to turn off the absolutely dumb full screen apps and mission control and launch pad stuff as i'm sure that all the extra graphics requirements has to be hurting my performance a bit. I'm not sure what all the desktop developers have been smoking lately but last I checked a computer was not a phone and trying to mimic the interface is just dumb. There is nothing useful about anything they've done in Lion that I can see. It all looks cool but trying to use it on a daily basis it just stinks.
Even the fullscreen apps that I though would be cool stinks because it takes longer to swith from one to the other and you loose the top menu while in it which requires extra effort just to see what time it is.
Anyway, if anyone can help point me towards a solution to get my computer usable again I'd appreciate it.
Thanks,
GKappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior. Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as Lion Cache Cleaner, TinkerTool System, OnyX, or Cocktail that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
SuperDuper!
SyncTwoFolders
Synk Pro
Synk Standard
Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space. -
MBP Still running slow after install from scratch
I have a 13-inch, Early 2011 macbook pro. 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5. 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3. It was running very slowly for a few months. Did a disk verify and found the hard drive was corrupt. I did a completely fresh install from scratch and upgraded to 10.9.1. (still running 10.9.1). I did not bring over any of the files or apps from the old system. Wanted to start from scratch.
The problem: It is still slow as heck. I mean, I will click on a folder, it will beach ball for a 3 seconds, then open the folder (for example). It is almost unusable. I just used the disk utility again and checked the hard drive and permissions and no issues were found. Anything else I can try or should I sell and buy something new? I really need to be productive on this machine and this is killing it... Help!Your machine should be fine once it's fixed. This isn't a processor problem. Either the hard drive is bad as a brody suggested, or the SATA cable that connects it to the motherboard is bad. A way to test this is to move the hard drive to an external enclosure and boot it from there. If it runs better, it's the SATA cable.

My MacBook Pro 2011 13" is running slow after ML update
My MBP 2011 13" (4 GB RAM, i5, 320 GB HD) had been a fast machine from the day I bought it till the day I upgraded it to ML from SL. The booting takes ages, the shutting down brings in the "background task" logo and most of the apps take a long while to come up. This is really affecting my productivity with the machine. Above all, my battery standby time has also reduced by approx. 2 hours. Would really like some help to overcome these problems. Kindly help!

2011 MacBook Pro Runs slow and Freezes
I have a Macbook Pro 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 running 8 GB of RAM and it runs like a dog - freezing and crashing like a PC would - have to keep rebooting it. What is going on. Has Bill Gates poisoned the Apple?
NO - it takes forever to load finder (files and subfiles take ages to load) and most other programs and then just stays busy forever & eventually I have to force quit everything and reboot.
I ugraded to 10.7.3 this afternoon and it seems to have made a small improvement. Not much.
