2011 MBP Overheating with just Safari?

I'm really confused... my macbook pro didn't do this before, but for the past week it's been getting super hot when I'm just using safari.
And last night the fans had to kick in even though I only had safari and twitter open....
Is there something wrong? I understand overheating for things that require more power (like Portal 2 or World of Warcraft) but Safari??

Are you perhaps running CPU intensive things on Safari? Maybe playing some online games or watching HD videos? This could be causing a problem.
If not, I suggest you open up your Activity Monitor (found in the Utilities folder of your Applications), and see what is using up your CPU. If Safari or any application is using a large percentage, it is a software issue. If not, then it could be a hardware flaw which needs to be corrected by Apple.
Make sure you have actually closed your other Apps. Most of the time, clicking the red 'x' in the top left does not close the program, just the window.

  • If my macbook's memory pressure goes red with just Safari and Word open, is it just a memory issue?

    Hello all,
I'd really appreciate any input on this issue. I'm not especially expert with regard to computer systems and software, so I ask that you please bear with me; I'll try to provide the best information I can. What has been happening with my computer is that it has been freezing and crashing, even with only Safari and Microsoft Word open. More information about the system as well as what I've done so far is below.
I have a mid-2012 13-inch Macbook Pro with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory (two 2 GB cards), and an Intel HD Graphics 4000 card. I am running I have approximately 280 gigs free on my 500 GB Apple HDD. I am running OS X 10.9.3 (13D65), Kernel version Darwin 13.2.0.
In March or April of this year, my computer started seriously slowing down and freezing and crashing. (I think that this was around the time I upgraded to Mavericks, but am not 100% positive.) Since it is my only computer and I'm a PhD student, it took me until May to seriously address the issue. I ran Apple hardware diagnostics and the disk utility (verified the disk; verified & repaired the permissions), and tried uninstalling programs I thought might be causing issues, but nothing improved. Since it didn't appear to be a hardware issue, I decided to do a clean install of Mavericks with a full software update [and didn't use a time machine backup like I'd done in the past; I only backed up files and bookmarks this time and installed new versions of all my programs]. Although my computer ran better for a few weeks, it started slowing down again, and lately has been crashing on a near-daily basis.
After reading through the fora, I re-ran disk utility (disks check out fine; one permission -- for Safari -- seems to refuse to be repaired), re-ran Apple Hardware test twice (no issues found), and have been running the Activity Monitor [I put it in my dock with the bars showing CPU usage]. Today, when my computer started seriously slowing while I had only two programs open (Safari & Microsoft Word), the Activity Monitor icon on the dock showed all four bars at max.
I managed to get a few screencaps of the Activity Monitor:
So, this suggests to me that either (a) I have insufficient RAM to run Mavericks and run basic computer programs, or (b) there is some other issue.
Do you all have any recommendations as to the best way to proceed? I don't have a lot of cash, so I can't really spend money unless it is really warranted. Would it be worth running OnyX first? Or is this a pretty clear indication that I need new RAM? Alternately, are there any other issues that seem likely (an undetected hard drive problem, etc.)?
    Thank you!

    Hi Melophage,
Thank you. Although it is possible something was running in the background, in Force Quit, the only applications visible were Finder, Microsoft Word, and Safari.
I ran Etrecheck and have included the output here:

  • Memory Used at 4.22GB with just Safari open... Help!

    Hi there,
I have a 2013 MacBook Pro Retina, 16GB RAM. I have been having difficulties recently determining why I keep running out of memory - then I checked my Activity Monitor and it appears 4 or so gigabytes of my memory is being used with only Safari open! Is there anything I can do to find the source of this and stop it?

As OGELTHORPE stated you do not have a RAM issue. If you are experiencing problems I would look in to whatever app has installed all those kernel extensions. Those kernel extensions are made for older OS X systems and probably aren't compatible with Mavericks.

  • Mid 2011 mbp i7 with a SSD has problems, including grey screen/blue screen/beeping/freezing when I stream live video (i.e. watch espn or time warner cable) Help? Ideas?

Recently my Macbook Pro (June 2011, i7, 8gb RAM, 512gb SSD, AMD Radeon 6750, Mountain Lion - since July - currently 10.8.2) has been presenting me with an array of problems, usually initiated when I am streaming live video. I was streaming Time Warner Cable on 12/9 and it gave me what looked like the blue screen of death.  It started up after about five attempts that time. The other day, after about a week of not using the computer, it wouldn't boot past the grey screen. I (option) started it and it gave me two boot choices, the regular HD and a "10.8 restore" option.  The HD gave me the grey screen and the restore option gave me the dark blue screen. I reset PRAM and that didn't work.  After a force (x) start it worked.  Today, I was using "Watch ESPN" and the screen froze and the computer did some kind of repeating RAM beep or something.  I rebooted and it started up fine.  I'm not watching any videos anymore, but this is a problem since the primary purpose for my mbp is video editing. I'm still under AppleCare but I find more solid answers in the forums or at least better questions for the AppleCare people.
Anybody have similar experiences, or a solid idea of what the heck has happened to my machine?

I'm not really sure what method that person was talking about. I just read he had a successful install so I posted it.
    But I'll hazard a guess
    1. copy your entire drive to a backup drive
    2. boot into that drive and test it out - make sure its a flawless backup, it works, and the hard drive has no problems
    3. eject that drive, disconnect it and reboot into the leopard install dvd
    4. erase your main hard drive using disc utilities on the leopard install dvd -- you've made a backup, made sure that backup was good, and disconnected it so it's currently safely disconnected from the leopard install you're about to do. Also, on the hard drive you're erasing and installing leopard on to, many people recommend "Zeroing" it as well as erasing it. That option is part of the erase function in disc utilities on the leopard install disc.
    5. do a clean install of leopard
    6. follow step 4 from that original post exactly as that person described to do.
    7. read the rest of what they said
That's pretty much it. With the backup/erase/clean install/import/ you pretty much get everything you need exactly the way you want it with very few things missing -- and you've done this over a clean install. Plus that poster did mention that you can select what you want to import from your backup hard drive.
It sounds like its a "clean install" method that gives you control via "import from machine" option in the installer. Control over what parts of your "old mac" you want to import into your "new leopard mac".
Hopefully that helps. It sounds more involved, but its actually pretty quick and provides you with a perfectly save backup in case anything goes wrong with the leopard install.

  • Macbook air mid 2011 cpu overheating with yosemite

    Hi,
after upgrading to OS X Yosemite, my MacBook air mid 2011 is constantly overheating, the CPU in particular, rapidly reaching 96-97 °C.
The CPU fan is (fortunately!) working regularly.
Did not experience such problem until yesterday morning, before upgrading to the new OS.
Activity monitor shows CPU use by "launchd" in particular.
    Thanks for any hint,
    Daniele

    Hi,
    thanks all for the replies.
I tried SMC reset following dominic23's suggestion, but that did not solve the issue.
After other attempts, I decided to go back to Mavericks, thanks to the time machine backup.
I have finished the process now and I'm writing you with the old 10.9.5 version. Everything is fine.
In my case, more than the CPU temperature and the noise, the worst part was the battery life, that dropped down to less than half an hour (I am used to almost 3 hours).
Thus, for all the MacBook Air (mid 2011) users, I strongly suggest to check on forums etc. before upgrading to Yosemite.

  • 2011 MBP 17" with two 27" Cinema Displays

I know this question has been asked several times, but I have not found a satisfactory answer to the question whether with the new 2011 17" MacBook Pro, one can use two 27" Cinema displays *at full 2560 x 1440* resolution each? I do not care about the LCD panel, I only want to power the two external 27" cinema's at full resolution.
The Matrox DualHead2go adapter seems to be limited at 1920 x 1200, and that is not good enough for what I want to accomplish. The USB adapters seem to be too slow for video playback as well and they seem buggy.
    Any ideas?

I'm looking for the same solution.
I have found this external pci solution but not 100% it will work. I was just gonna buy the raedon card with dual minidp output and run it externally. It says it's Mac compatible I'm just not sure if the video card will fit the enclosure. Heres the link. http://www.magma.com/2slot.asp

  • 2011 MBP Install Vista just to use for Windows 7 Upgrade?

I just bought a MBP 13" in July.  In Bootcamp I would like to run vista but I have heard that you cannot.  I can get a legal copy of vista for very cheap and am wondering if I could install it for the sole purpose of using the student discounted windows 7 download upgrade.  It just works out cheaper for me that way.  Will I even be able to install vista if even for this purpose?
    thanks!

Has anyone tried to just quit BCA? tell it you'll do it later. Then just do restart and open the tray wth Vista DVD and hold "C" and see.
My own logic: has to boot.
Lion still supports Vista if pre-installed, so it can't stop you from using your Vista DVD.
It would be really difficult to change something in GPT/MBR to block Vista from being installed but not if it is present. Seems like it is just a patch in Boot Camp Assistant 4 is all.
Does the Windows DVD need to be present during the partitioning? during the driver download phase? can you download drivers now while the Windows DVD will be bought or shipped later?
I totally understand not supporting XP on new hardware. And Microsoft already dropped Vista SP1 support (assume SP2 is current and there may not be any plan for SP3??)
To block install or reinstall if you have Vista DVD would be extreme overthetop. Next to impossible.

  • 2011 MBP Overheating Using FCP 10

I'm using Final Cut Pro X for small projects on my 2011 13 i7 MacBookPro. The temps stay in a reasonable range until I start scrubbing clips. Even though I'm using proxies the temp can quickly crawl up to 90C+ (194F+). Same, or higher temps happen during import, without analysis. I have to use SMC Fan Control to set fan at 3 or 4K rpms for scrubbing and up to 6K for importing clips. I really have to stay on top of it. However, playback on the timeline usually stays around 60C (140F). Pretty crazy.....this is Apple software running really hot on an Apple computer.
Any thoughts on how I can minimize this craziness?

This from Final Cut Pro X Help.
Options for transcoding media at Import. You can choose to create one or both media files.
You can choose to use the Proxy media files during playback, Playback Preferences.
Create optimized media: This option transcodes video to the Apple ProRes 422 codec format, which provides better performance during editing, faster render times, and better color quality for compositing.
Create proxy media: This option creates video and still-image proxy files. Video is transcoded to the Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy) codec format, which provides high-quality files useful for offline editing at the original frame size, frame rate, and aspect ratio. Final Cut Pro creates medium-quality (one-quarter resolution) proxy versions that increase editing performance. You can use Final Cut Pro to transcode your original media to create proxy files, which are smaller files with a lower data rate. Proxy files can be used for offline editing or for editing when using a slower computer.
I have assumed that since I ask Import to create both files, optimized and proxy, that for performance efficiency proxy media is used in both the timeline (storyline) and in playback. I'm sure that I'm seeing low quality proxy media in playback.
What I'm not certain of is which file is actually displayed when scrubbing in the Timeline. Full screen playback hardly affects temperature at all. Scrubbing on the Timeline creates almost instant high temps.
I'm wondering if there is a way to tell FCPX to use the proxy as the display image during scrubbing.

  • MBP overheating with Mavericks

My mbp early 2011 is over heating after upgrading to mavericks.  Have to shut down and restart.

I had same problems. I contacted support and tried doing a system managment controller reset.
    The instructions are here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
That seemed to help a little bit but my battery kept on draining. Monitor showed AGAdminService to be using the bulk of my cpu.
I'm trying uninstalling it: sudo launchctl unload -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.citrix.agadminservice.plist
I noticed that my fan stopped running as much.
    Will see how it works.

Could it be that there is a port wrong somewhere? Can anybody make heads or tails of this? Any assistance is gratefully appreciated...

  • MBP 2012 (not retina) replace HD with 2011 MBP SSD?

I have an early 2011 MBP 13in with an Intel SSD running Lion. Wonderful computer. SSD runs like a champ. However, I just bought the 2012 15in (NOT RETINA) MBP, and I want to replace the HD in the 2012 MBP with the SSD from my 2011 MBP. Can I remove the HD from the 2012 MBP, put the SSD from the 2011 MBP into the new 2012 MBP and it will simply work? If it's not quite that simple, what steps must I take to get the SSD from the 2011 MBP working in the 2012 (NOT RETINA) MBP?
(Oh, and for those that are curious...I am not interested in the retina MBP because the RAM and SSD are soldered into the board. No thanks.)

and as most unbelievable things its not true, you can still replace the SSD on both the retina and non retina macbooks. Ram in the only thing you cant replace because of it being soldered (on the retina only).
The ssd in the retina is proprietary so we have to wait for someone to release a compatable module, but it does infact unscrew and come out.
The non-retina macbooks should be as upgradable (hdd and ram wise) as much as the 2011 edition.

  • 2011 MBP 15", how to install Windows 8 via USB?

I successfully got my Windows 8 installation files on a USB. I just upgraded to Mountain Lion and no longer have the option to install Windows from another source. How can I install Windows 8 off my USB? BootCamp Assistant only offers the CD option.
    Best regards.

On computers which Apple shipped with an Optical drive, then the Boot Camp utility expects you to use that optical drive to install your Windows OS.  Since the 2011 MBP shipped with an optical drive, the Boot Camp utility expects you to boot the Windows installer from that drive.

  • 2011 MBP i7 running slow. Hardware limitations?

I have a early 2011 MBP 15" with 2.3 GHz Core i7, 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HD. I purposely put in as much RAM as possible as I usually run a lot of apps simulataneously.
I will usually have either a number of Microsoft Office (2011) programs open at once, Windows 7 64 bit running in Parallels 7 (also running a number of apps), or a combination of both. I have noticed that my computer seems to be running fairly slow, especially given the i7 processor and the RAM upgrade. When booting up windows in parallels, it can sometimes take upwards of 15 minutes to get the windows side of things to work. While windows is booting up, the mac side tends to be extremely slow, pinwheeling quite a bit. Additionally, Microsoft Outlook 2011 is almost unusable on the mac side of things (I realize this may be a result of the software). Even after  shut down Windows, the mac side can still tend to run fairly slow.
750 GB HD with 100 GB partitions for Windows. WIndows HD is 70GB/100GB used.
Designated 4GB RAM for mac side/4GB for windows.
When viewing activity monitor, the processors are rarely above 50%, usually down around 10%, or less. RAM is almost always fully utilized (less than 20MB free).
My question is: do you think this is a software related issue, as it relates to windows/parrallels/microsoft programs? Or is this a hardware limited issue? Do I need more RAM? Could I possible benefit from an SSD/Hybrid drive? I use my computer for work and for personal use, so it is essential that I am able to use both Windows and Mac simultaneously.
    Thanks for the help!

Also... be sure to balance your allocation of RAM between your Windows virtual machine and OS X.  If you allocate too much to your virtual machine, OS X will take a significant performance hit... which would in-turn cause your virtual machine to slow to a crawl.  Depending on what you're doing, you should probably not set your virtual machine to more than 4GB.  The amount of RAM you allocate to the virtual machine is basically taken whether you need it or not.  For example, if you allocate 6GB to your virtual machine, as soon as you launch the virtual machine, regardless of what applications you are running in it, only 2GB will be available to OS X.  Making sure both OS X and your virtual machine have enough RAM allocated to them is important.
If you're RAM has been balanced in your settings for your virtual machine and your performance is still poor, you may need to go with more RAM.  8GB is generally more than enough for most people, but your usage / expectations are on the high side.  Keeping in mind everything you have running... opening this applications, modifying this file, etc... you're also working your hard drive pretty hard.  An SSD would make a significant difference in performance.  Of course there is a premium associated with a high capacity SSD (which I would imagine you would want).

  • Problems with Late 2011 MBP (catalog corrupt, won't boot from USB/CD)

    Hello,
I have had some problems with my Late 2011 MBP running OSX 10.8.x (latest update)
I was using Safari when suddenly my screen froze. It has happened a couple of times before but it usually is either: 1.) a black screen for 5 seconds while nothing works responds and then it continues work like nothing happened, or 2.) just a freeze for a moment which goes away within a few seconds. I have visited the official service and they found nothing wrong with my laptop and said that it may have been just random occurrence. This time it froze and as I waited the fans went crazy and had no other option but to shut down from the power button. Later, when I wanted to boot up, it gets to the Apple logo, the circle spins and the small bar below appears and after a second or two, it disappears and then the computer shuts down. I went to recovery mode and used disk utility to verify and repair the problem (which only works to find out the problem, not to fix it, thanks anyway apple) Heres what it showed:

Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
I tried to boot DiskWarrior from a USB and a CD, after pushing enter in the bootable device's screen, I get a continuous loop of 3 beeps and I can't boot from either of the mediums.
I also tried the Single-user mode (Command-s when booting) and the /sbin/fsck -fy said that my HD is not completely verifiable. Also, 3/4 of the files mentioned in disk utility are also mentioned in this process, with errors as forrows: keys out of order, invalid index key, invalid extent entries (7 times), incorrect block counts, number of links and incorrect sizes for the foretold files and invalid catalog record type.
The reason why I'm not doing a clean install is that the last few days I've been in the process of deleting unnecessary items on my laptop so I could make a back-up (as for some reason, Time Machine is awfully slow and a new 600 gb backup would take and enormous amount of time, but that's a problem for another day) and as I had not yet reached the backing up part, my data is locked on this (possibly) corrupt HD. How should I advance and what steps should I take?
My first and most important mission would be to get back into my OS to make a back-up. Then I'd deal with the "not being able to boot form USB nor CD" and the TM problem.
    Thank you all in advance,
    Martin

Before you even start, consider that there may be no Windows 7 driver support for some of the hardware in your laptop. You won't know which hardware devices and functions are unsupported until you find out the hard way. In some cases, a driver conflict could cripple your computer.
Like most OEMS, Toshiba pre-installs Windows 8 to boot with EFI on a GPT hard drive. Your Windows 7 install disc, on the other hand, most likely boots with a BIOS from an MBR. Therefore, your Windows 7 disc will not boot your computer.
You would need to start by performing a low-level format of your hard drive. This completely erases the disc and its metadata. Then you could boot from your Windows installation disc and try to install Windows 7. How successful you will be depends on driver support.
All things considered, you should stay with Windows 8. Next time, more research before you buy.
