2011 MBP slow and won't complete backup

Hi all -
I have a 17" 2011 MBP, 750GB HD, 8G RAM, pretty hefty machine.  Os10.8  Recently it's been generally slow.  It will not complete time machine backups, and often takes many minutes to reboot.  Sometimes I have to kill the reboot with the power switch and turn back on manually.  Occasionally programs take a long time to open, and sometimes they show open on the dock but no window pops up.  In this case I have to kill the program with forge quit, and reopen.  This usually solves it, but not always.
I took it to the genius bar, as it is still under applecare for another month from the previous owner, and the decided to replace the hard drive.  Picked it up yesterday, restored to my most recent backup, Nov 11, 2012, and started installing a few small software items that I had purchased since the latest backup, mostly AU plugins for Logic 9 and MacKeeper 2012.
The problems persist: very slow reboot, slow performance, and not able to complete backups.  I had read that mackeeper can slow down one's system, so I uninstalled that by dragging the icon from the applications folder to the trash, initiating the uninstaller.  That didn't seem to change anything...
My backup scheme is a little unconventional: I'm not using time capsule, rather an airport with an external g-tech 2GB drive.  It worked fine up until recently.
Any ideas?  Something is definitely wrong, but what I have no idea.  I have another genius appoinment next week, but if I can solve it on my own, I'd rather do that.  Given the last misdiagnoisis, I'm not sure if they are the best for figuring this stuff out or not.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!
Geoff

Had an appointment at the genius bar this weekend and he cleared up several things for me - reset some permissions amd generally cleaned up a few things that made the machine run much better.
Notably, I had an external FW drive that I use to store audio files and logic projects, which I had ignorantly told time machie to back up when it was connected.  the genius guy said that if i do this it must be connected EVERY TIME time machine backs up, or it will screw up the system.
Short story is that I repartitioned my backup drive, backup up hard wire via FW800, and all seems well.  The computer is back to normal operation seemingly.
He also recommended exlcuding a couple of things from backups, notably the stuff related to the parallels desktop, which leads to my first new question.  I did the first backup without excluding anything.  Can i now exclude the parallels directories from subsequent backups without messing things up?
And the second, more general question: best way to automatically back up a portable external HD that may or may not be regularly plugged into my system.  Is there a way to do this automatically or must it be manual backups only?
Thanks so much!

  • Time Machine Slow and Won't Complete under Mavericks

I've upgraded an iMac to Mavericks on the day of release.  I noticed Time Machine stopped working.  I'm backing up a 500 GB internal drive (about 50% full)  and 2 TB usb 2.0 drive (about 75% full) to a 3 TB USB drive - it all worked well before the upgrade.
The initial time machine backup took forever and never completed - the time machine volume kept expanding past the 3GB limit of the drive and then would fail due to no space left on the disk.
I reformatted the drive - same problem.  Initial backup size was estimated at about 2.15 TB and ended up failing after 3TB of data was written to the drive.
I then deleted the Time Machine .plists and restarted - same problem.
Then I tried backing up to a 4 TB Synology NAS drive - and it's still going 4 days later but now just continues to add data to a never-completing backup.
I upgraded an mac mini to mavericks and the backup process never changed.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to get Time Machine working properly?

Thank you very much! I'd say that's what would need to be done. I ended up calling Apple tech support (WORLDS better than Dell tech support I must say) and we weren't able to do anything to the drive, so I ran to the store with my mother and picked out a new external hard drive for her. Guess I'll find out today when I get there how it did last night. I partitioned the drive myself and manually backed up her files on one partition and dedicated the other to time machine back ups.
    Thank you so much!

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.
    If that fails:
Restore from your back up, repair the Library and try again.

I am trying to export a pdf to word but the document keeps "loading " for a long period of time and won't complete?

    Hi Jennee,
You're using the Save As > Microsoft Word command in Acrobat (and what version are you using)? At what point does the status bar in the lower-right corner hang up (Pre-processing, Recontructing, and so on)? What type of content is there in the PDF, and how large is it? Are you having Acrobat run OCR on the file as it converts (you can check this by clicking Settings in the Save As dialog box)? Do you have trouble saving other PDF files as Word documents?
A lot of questions, I know. But I need to know a bit more about the document to determine why it's hanging up on export.
    Thanks

  • Problems with Late 2011 MBP (catalog corrupt, won't boot from USB/CD)

    Hello,
I have had some problems with my Late 2011 MBP running OSX 10.8.x (latest update)
I was using Safari when suddenly my screen froze. It has happened a couple of times before but it usually is either: 1.) a black screen for 5 seconds while nothing works responds and then it continues work like nothing happened, or 2.) just a freeze for a moment which goes away within a few seconds. I have visited the official service and they found nothing wrong with my laptop and said that it may have been just random occurrence. This time it froze and as I waited the fans went crazy and had no other option but to shut down from the power button. Later, when I wanted to boot up, it gets to the Apple logo, the circle spins and the small bar below appears and after a second or two, it disappears and then the computer shuts down. I went to recovery mode and used disk utility to verify and repair the problem (which only works to find out the problem, not to fix it, thanks anyway apple) Heres what it showed:

I tried to boot DiskWarrior from a USB and a CD, after pushing enter in the bootable device's screen, I get a continuous loop of 3 beeps and I can't boot from either of the mediums.
I also tried the Single-user mode (Command-s when booting) and the /sbin/fsck -fy said that my HD is not completely verifiable. Also, 3/4 of the files mentioned in disk utility are also mentioned in this process, with errors as forrows: keys out of order, invalid index key, invalid extent entries (7 times), incorrect block counts, number of links and incorrect sizes for the foretold files and invalid catalog record type.
The reason why I'm not doing a clean install is that the last few days I've been in the process of deleting unnecessary items on my laptop so I could make a back-up (as for some reason, Time Machine is awfully slow and a new 600 gb backup would take and enormous amount of time, but that's a problem for another day) and as I had not yet reached the backing up part, my data is locked on this (possibly) corrupt HD. How should I advance and what steps should I take?
My first and most important mission would be to get back into my OS to make a back-up. Then I'd deal with the "not being able to boot form USB nor CD" and the TM problem.
    Thank you all in advance,
    Martin

Before you even start, consider that there may be no Windows 7 driver support for some of the hardware in your laptop. You won't know which hardware devices and functions are unsupported until you find out the hard way. In some cases, a driver conflict could cripple your computer.
Like most OEMS, Toshiba pre-installs Windows 8 to boot with EFI on a GPT hard drive. Your Windows 7 install disc, on the other hand, most likely boots with a BIOS from an MBR. Therefore, your Windows 7 disc will not boot your computer.
You would need to start by performing a low-level format of your hard drive. This completely erases the disc and its metadata. Then you could boot from your Windows installation disc and try to install Windows 7. How successful you will be depends on driver support.
All things considered, you should stay with Windows 8. Next time, more research before you buy.

  • Early 2011 MBP Slowing Down

Hello, I have an early 2011 MBP (15-inch), system report below:
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011)
Processor: 2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Startup Disk: Macintosh SSD
Graphics: HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
Lately, my MBP has been slowing down a lot.
I  tested out a bunch of flash sites, but it does not seem to be the problem. Like I said, I have 16gb of RAM (combined with what I have located above, i7, etc), and have had numerous  flash sites up, but no slowdown. The problem is recent, in that I've noticed it in the past 6 months. Nothing changed in that period at all to cause this problem.
I've run this setup for a couple years without issue (SSD where the DVD player used to be, and the HDD where the old HDD was located), without issue.
My MBP gets so hot that I have to move it frequently for scare of erythema eb igne (stupid technical term, but I might not be joking, and would rather not joke around about something like that.but seriously it get that hot where your only option is to shut off the MBP.  I know that might sound extreme. But my MBP gets that hot. Especially if you are running a program like Premiere. I understand the power and RAM that it takes to run a program like that, but it was shocking. This is a program (Premiere) I ran without problems previously..
Checking activity monitor (and iStat), RAM does not seem to be the issue. CPU seems fine 88-90% usage,
Usually have 7-8GB of RAM available, and the CPU usage under 90%.
I have no idea, but I will be taking a can of compressed air to the MBP.
I was just wondering if anyone had any other ideas or had similar situations to help me out?
    Thank You,
    T

  • My MBP is not recognising the audio device and won't complete a time machine backup, what might it be?

I have a MBP thats about 18months old. First indicator was the audio device intermittantly being recognised ( the speaker icon on the status bar goes grey, nothing with sound works, then it comes good again). Thought little of it, till I noticed the backlighting of my keyboard also failed at the same time as the Speaker icon was grey.
Then lately, it wont do a complete time machine back up, either via airport or usb.

  • Time Machine won't complete backup to a new drive

I've recently replaced my WD MyBook 1TB drive because it was beginning to fail. The current replacement is a LaCie 2TB.
I use time machine to select the drive and start a backup and it runs for a little while and then fails with no message at all. I have tried many suggestions found on this site an on the net. I deleted the partition on the disk and set it up for use with Time Machine, I have run repair on both that disk and my main hard drive. At first I thought it was the firewire connection and tried USB instead, but there appears to be something else wrong. I also tried a new WD 2TB drive, with the same results, so I don't think it is either the cable, the disk, or the port.
I tried a sudo grep backupd /var/log/system.log as someone suggested and here are the results:

That's clearly a crash. There's a crash log, but we really don't need it.
A +Segmentation fault+ is some problem with the app trying to access a piece of memory it's not authorized to, or trying to change something it's not allowed to change.
You've already tried most of the things we'd start with (assuming you ran +Repair Disk+ or +Verify Disk,+ not permissions).
Your installation of OSX may be damaged. I'd suggest downloading and installing the "combo" update. That's the cleverly-named combination of all the updates to Leopard or Snow Leopard since it was first released, so installing it should fix anything that's gone wrong since then, such as with one of the normal "point" updates. Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.
I'm not real sure what version of OSX you're on -- one post says 10.6.6, the other 10.5.4.
If you're on 10.6.6, the "combo" is at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1349
    If 10.5.8, it's at http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
If an earlier version of Leopard, change the "8" at the end.
