2011 MBP with odd Kernel Panic?

Hey guys, my system had a weird kernel panic that I've been searching for solutions on and finding little.  In the quest to NOT have to take it to Apple, I thought I'd ask the wise minds of NBR if they might have an idea what could have caused the following panic:
Interval Since Last Panic Report:  2818563 sec

=============================
Open, running applications: Mail, Fidelia (music), Firefox, Reeder, Dreamweaver, Photoshop.  At the time of the freeze, the display was put to sleep via Expose active corner.  When I tried to move the mouse to wake the display again, nothing happened and I heard the song that was playing in Fidelia stuttering in place.  FWIW, I've put my laptop to sleep this same way with these same applications running regularly for 6 consecutive days without any issues.  That would make it extremely hard to reproduce.
I find it odd that the IOStorageFamily extension may be involved.  The only thing plugged into USB was my bluetooth headset, which was charging.  It is not synchronized with the laptop...it was just charging.  The mention of WindowServer is less surprising, as I've read that Expose/Spaces usage can impact that.
It's possible that the parallels kexts or paragon kext are related...but really, those are the same drivers I used for almost a year on my 2010 MBP without ever experiencing this kind of issue.  And Parallels was not running either.  Paragon NTFS is always running.
I'm really pretty new to this kind of trouble-shooting, so if anyone has thoughts or input, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Ok, so I ran the Apple Hardware Test (I needed to press and hold Option (alt) + D on startup, not ONLY D, which the apple KB stated) and the result was pretty clear:
"AHT found the following problem: 4MEM/60/40000000: 0x8329b798"
According to other discussions on the forum, this is, as Linc Davis stated, a problem with the RAM.
So, how do I reinstall the original RAM? Is this something that you can do by yourself? My Apple Care has expired, but I might have som guarantee left from the store where I bought my computer.
Thanks for the help!

  • 2011 MacBook Pro experiencing Kernel Panics when using iPhone 4 as modem

Recently purchased a custom MacBook Pro 15" with the upgraded 2.3 ghz quad core i7 processor. I immediately installed 8 GB of Ram and a 750GB 7200 speed HD from OWC when the unit arrived. All was well when testing from home, and had zero issues after using the Mac assistant to pull apps and user data from my old MBP, which I then sold on ebay.
Brought my new MBP to work, where I use my iPhone 4 (not jailbroken) to data share, using the personal hotspot. I connect the iPhone 4 to the MBP via USB, to keep the battery on the iPhone 4 charged.
While at work, I almost immediately started getting chain Kernel Panics on the new MBP. After hard powering down and restarting, the Kernel Panics would return at unpredictable intervals, sometimes an hour or more, sometimes within seconds of booting. I immediately suspected the RAM from OWC, as bad ram is the leading cause of Kernel Panics, according to a quick google search. So here is what I did in order, although keep in mind that this took place over a period of weeks, where I would intermittently go days w/out a Kernel Panic, and I was going crazy trying to figure this out.
    1. Took apart machine and re-seated OWC Ram-did not fix
    2. Attempted to confirm OWC RAM was bad before sending back to OWC, moved to step 3
    3. Put Apple Hardware Test DVD in and let it run the extended hardware test in loop mode over a weekend (72 hours), with no report of any hardware failure
    4. Some reports on the internet seemed to indicate the Apple Hardware test was not always reliable in discovering bad ram, so I purchased memtest, which I then looped and ran for 12 hours to test ram, with no report of failure.
    5. Performed clean install of OS X 10.6 from Apple DVD, to include wiping the drive-Kernel Panics remained.
    6. Removed OWC ram and installed Apple original Ram-Kernel Panics remained
    7. Realized that at home I was on WiFi, and was not getting Kernel Panics (at least none that I could remember over the course of 2 weeks)
    8. Tested w/ iPhone 4 connected via USB as personal Hot Spot, and Kernel Panics occurred regularly.
    9. Tested w/ iPhone 4 connected via WiFi as personal Hot Spot, and Kernel Panics have not returned (running 6 hours so far w/out Kernel Panic)
At the beginning I had a Kensington Turbo Mouse connected as well, but over time I unplugged it to remove it from my troubleshooting list. At this point I must conclude that when using the iPhone 4 to data share over USB is the cause of my Kernel Panics.
All of the above was the long winded version of, my iPhone 4 is crashing my Mac. I just wanted interested parties to know what I've done already before suggestions are made.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Anyone using their iPhone 4 to data share and connecting via USB w/out experiencing Kernel Panics? Anyone have any thoughts/ideas as to why this would occur?
FWIW, I've tried more than one USB cable to connect the iPhone to my MBP, and experienced Kernel Panics w/ both cables. I also fully restored my iPhone 4 when the recent 4.3 iOS update was released, so I don't think it's a software issue w/ the iPhone. I do not have a second iPhone 4 to test with, I also do not have a second Mac to test with.
Thanks up front for your thoughts and/or assistance.
    Bill

    Hi everyone !
I'm new on this forum (and French btw, so I apologize in advance for any mistake (: )
I've bought the brand new MBP 13' few weeks ago, and I kept having this problem until now, I just installed K64 Enabler, and it seems to work perfectly, so I wanted you all to know it
Thanks for all the help you brought me !
Hope Apple will fix this once for all !
    See you !

  • 2011 MBP with 8GB of RAM, generally slow under Lion, possibly thrashing

I have a 17" 2011 MBP with 8GB of RAM and the fastest CPU available at the time.  It came with Snow Leopard, and it was really fast with basically everything I threw at it.
Since the upgrade to Lion, it has a general tendency to get really unresponsive.  My workload hasn't fundamentally changed.  Rather than just hope it's bugs in Lion that will get fixed, I'd like to see if anyone can advise me on things I might investigate, either to fix things myself, or to be more intelligent about identifying bugs I can report.
One thing I notice is that Time Machine backups will bring the system to its knees.  Everything will be going along just fine, and then TM will kick on, and all my apps will stop responding.  Once TM has finished, things will slowly come back to normal.  There's a lot of disk activity, which I have assumed was swapping.  Another thing that causes trouble is that mds (and a whole bunch of mdsworkers) will frequently kick on, and will slow down the system.
CPU load is always quite low, but free memory is always very low.  (However, in some OS's Free Memory is misleading, because a lot of disk blocks are cached in RAM, so it's not really "used" either..)
What I can't really distinguish for sure is if the system is slow because of swapping/thrashing (which is what I assume) or if it's slowed down for some other reason related to disk activity.
Here are the apps I typically run:
    - NetBeans (which is a pig, taking up over 1GB or real memory)
    - Safari (which is also a pig, often taking up more than 1GB between the main Safari process and the Web Content process)
    - Sometimes Parallels (2GB for the VM, and probably another 1GB for other stuff, because it's also a pig)
    - kernel_task typically reports taking up over 1GB of real memory
    - WindowServer also reports using 280MB
    - various other small apps like Mail, NetNewsWire, Preview, Terminal, Adium, Smultron, Colloquy, none of which use much memory
I got the 8GB, because I knew I was going to use a lot of memory for stuff, and it was great under Snow Leopard.  But with Lion, it just doesn't seem to be enough.  Even with all of those huge processes, I can't believe that their working sets are really as big as their virtual and physical memory footprints seem to be.  I mean it's not unusual for a process to have 2GB of virtual space but only a few 100MB of real memory, and some of that is shared object libraries, where the same physical memory is mapped into multiple processes.  (Have shared object libraries stopped being physically shared under Lion?)
Are other people having similar trouble?  Any suggested remedies?  Any suggestions on how to investigate so I can see if there are any actual bugs?
I would like to understand why my system went from zippy to slow after I upgraded to Lion.  Actually, quite a few things have broken.  Time Machine has become a pig, bluetooth doesn't work reliably anymore, airport doesn't connect reliably anymore, and lots of little annoying bugs.  But this is common for early point releases of new OS's, so I can't complain too much.  But for Lion to have really regressed in memory management is definitely not good.

Safari, for what ever reason, has become a huge memory
pig.  The longer you are using it the more memory it
    gobbles up.
In Activity Monitor, check the Page outs and Swapped used.
This will tell you how much memory swapping is going on.
As for Time Machine, you may want to set your Parallels
HD image not to get backed up by Time Machine.  May
help since it is a huge collection of files.  But there have been
issues reported with Time Machine and Lion.  I don't
use it myself and opt for the cloning methodology and
seperate data backup strategy.  Also, in Spotlight
preferences under the Privacy Tab, I have added
my Windows VM folders, for same reason.  Unless you really
need to find something on the windows VM volumes when you
don't have the Windows VM active, it just eats up alot
    of disk access time.
For solving airport issues check this article:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20117247-263/fixing-airport-problems-in-os- x/?tag=mncol;txt
For Bluetooth devices, try removing them, and have them rediscovered if you
    can.
Hopefully, this gives you a start on cleaning things up.

Hi, Linc Davis, can you tell me witch type of error that was? CPU error, GPU error, so on. Thanks.

  • New mbp, just got kernel panic. Should I be concerned?

    Hi everyone,
I got my mbp last month.
    It's a 15" i7   I have it updated completely, OS X version 10.6.8
I just got the kernel panic. I looked online and learned that this shouldn't be a problem as long as this doesn't happen again within a couple weeks. Still, I am a bit freaked. Should I really not be concerned? I mean.. my mac basically just crashed...and it's pretty new...
I have read apple's pages about the kernel panic but I wanted to ask you mac-users.
By the way, the crash happened while I had skype, firefox and itunes running. In addition, I went to check the log of the kernel panic. And all I could find was a crash report:  "iTunes_2011_6_28 [...] macbook pro crash"   Maybe iTunes caused it?...even though today's date is 7/10/2011 and not 6/28/2011?
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Karen
P.S. - Sorry if there was a thread/discussion already on this. I know it's annoying to be repetitive

ah thankyou. I was going to say, I feel like I'm being incredibly stupid. (proves how noobish I am to mac)
Alrighty, so here is what I find. Will this be of any help to figuring out the problem? Or should I just not worry?
    (Thanks for correcting me. haha)

  • Very Odd Kernel Panic On Boot Up

I just today had a one-of-a-kind kernel panic on bootup from a completely shutdown machine. The box is a PowerMac G4, Mirrored Drive Door, dual-core 1.25 GHz, OS X 10.4.9, 512 MB factory installed RAM and 512 User-installed Ram for a total of 1GB. Have
Energized computer. Diverted attention. When I turned around to sit down and get to work, I was confronted with the following screen: There was the multi-lingual Kernel panic box on the gray screen, the "throbber" that usually rotates beneath the dark-gray Apple logo rotating away, and "overprinted" on all this was the "international no" symbol centered is a round-cornered translucent box (similar to what you see when you use the keyboard to alter the volume backing up the speaker icon), in the absolute center of the screen.
I powered down the computer and powered it up. Boot without a problem.
I then restarted the computer. Restarted flawlessly.
After using it for a little while, I did a full shut down and restart, used it for a little while, and shut down and restarted again. All these evolutions completed without failure or problems of any kind.
I've verified the startup disk successfully, SMART status is "Verified" for this hard disk, and have performed permissions repair successfully–with no indications of any permissions having to be repaired. All seems to be working normally and well.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this? I've Googled for this problem, and searched these forums, and have found nothing to compare to this.
For general edification, I've included the output of system.log for what looks like the time of the first failed boot and the boot immediately after. For the record, my two peripherals in constant use are a LaCie 60GB FW HD and a Wacom Intuos tablet, which is my primary somatic pointing device at this time–this log excerpt follows.
I cannot locate any report on this event in any kernel log. I also put the machine to sleep to check for kernel panic on wakeup from sleep (no problems there either). And the 512MB user-installed RAM is a Crucial memory module that has been in use for at least a year with no problems.
Thanks in advance for any insights.
    Sam Klein.

Well, there's the prob: this kernel panic did not leave a log report.
The last one before that was 17 Oct, 07; the last one before that was 26 Jan, 07.
I just don't seem to have a panic log for this event. The system log is the best I could come up with.

  • MacBook pro 8,2 late-2011 after series of kernel panics and video glitches stopped booting

Hello, friends... I am shattered, my MacBook Pro stopped booting today. It all started two days ago, when I came to India and got USB modem dongle from Tata Docomo. It was making Lion kernel panic whenever it was connected to Internet, but had no effect while disconnected or unplugged from the laptop. Then yesterday I had a kernel panic while playing a video in VLC, then while using Skype, and after a while I figured out the pattern, it would crash every time computer switched on the graphic card instead of the on-board CPU graphics. It would also crash with striped blue screen and misplace it horizontally. All this time I was looking for the solution on the internet, and ran two hardware tests, both normal and extended, both showed no issues, tried booting into safe mode getting the striped blue kernel panic screen after the progress bar filled. Resetting the ram also didn't help. Now it will not boot at all, only the hardware test is still working. After the logo screen in normal mode it just goes power off or hangs in grey screen for infinity.
Please, I need your help guys, I'm desperate, went to India for a few months and laptop breaking down almost straight away, and I'm also a dj, so its like a musical instrument to me, that I cannot work without...
Again - MacBook Pro 8,2 Late-2011, 2,4 ghz, 750gb hdd, 4gb ram, ati 1gb graphic card and running Lion 10.7.3, thanks!

Try the fixes here, take it back for a warranty call

  • Help with a Kernel Panic caused by NTFS filesystem

    Hello All,
I need  a little help trying to diagnose a reacurring kernel panic.
I originally thought it was being caused by Intego Virus Barrier, but that has been uninstalled for over a week now. On avergage, I get about 2 kernel panics a day. I have not been able to isolate why it panic's when it does. Looking at the Panic logs, I believe the issue to be with the Bootcamp partition, but before I go and reformat the drive, I wanted to check with the community to see if there was anything I can do.  I have not launched into Bootcamp in probably over 2 months, but the panics started about 2 weeks ago.
I have performed the Extended Apple Hardware test several times and there seems to be no issue.
The consistant item in all the logs is

    Hi Hatter,
Thanks for the response.  I actually did not intend to post this in the Windows Software Category. I'm not sure how it ended up there as I thought I was in the MacBookPro discussion area.
So, I am running Mac OS 10.6.7 and get these panics. I have neither VirusBarrier or Little Snitch installed.
The kernel extension com.apple.filesystems.ntfs is what I am assuming is the culprit as it is consistantly listed in the backtrace.
I have read both of the mentioned articles.  I do not seem to get the Kernel Panics when booted in safe mode, but I assume that is because the com.apple.filesystems.ntfs is not loaded when in safe mode and the Boot Camp partition does not mount (and cannot be).
So if Apple Hardware Test shows the drive as being healthy. The panic also mentions the active thread as mds. So I'm guessing that Spotlight is trying to index the NTFS partition and something in the middle is getting angry and causing the panics. Without re-formatting, is there any way to re-install just the Bootcamp extenisions for Mac OS X?
Or am I off base here?

Hi everyone. I've been having kernel panics for the past few months and I've been having trouble figuring out what's causing it.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 Snow Leopard Constant Kernel Panics

Before the Kernel Panics I was getting a lot of screen flickering and feezing. After my operating system Snow Leopard 10.6.8 was reinstalled and a new logic board put in I started getting Kernel Panics. Back to the Apple store and my computer went out for a new Logic Board, Graphic Card and Display and I am still getting Kernel Panics daily.  I purchased my MacBook Pro in March of 2011 and this all started in April. Below is my latest Kernel Panic report. Any ideas what is wrong with my computer?

There's usually a section that begins "loaded kexts." Maybe this log is formatted differently. Try disconnecting the Toshiba external USB hub. Have you installed any third party RAM? Even if not,  check the RAM by running a few loops of Rember.
EDIT: Oh, OK I'm seeing loaded kexts: com.AmbrosiaSW.AudioSupport! 4.0
Third party programs with kernel extensions can be a culprit. Try uninstalling that or seeing if there's an update.
But you needn't completely uninstall a program(s) suspected of creating these panics. This may not always work, but the worst that can happen is it will fail. Far better than completely uninstalling and reinstalling the full program, if it proves not to be the cause. Instead, you can temporarily disable a program. This may be especially useful when there are several suspects.
To temporarily disable/unload any .kext (kernel extension) which may be causing the problem, do the following: Open Terminal in Applications>Utilties and copy/paste
    sudo kextunload
Important, leave a space after kextunload
Next, navigate to the /System/Library/ and select Extensions. Inside that folder, find the related .kext in question, which you should drag into the Terminal window. (After dragging it in, the file will stay where it belongs in its original location.) This will automatically fill the Terminal window with the name and path to the file.
This is an example only of what the full command will then look like; it will not necessarily be found on your computer.
    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/PaceSupportFamily.kext/
Hit return. If you have never used the sudo prefix before, you will get a warning, which you can disregard. Then enter your admin password, which you won't see on the screen as you type it in and hit return. Wait for the $ sign prompt to reappear, which will indicate the extension has been unloaded. Then just close the window.
This will have the effect of disabling the program. If it fails to be the source of the problem, to reload/enable it, substitute kextload for kextunload, using the above procedure.
Other than that, have a look at this article on resolving kernel panics. Kernel Panics may be caused either by software or hardware. Faulty RAM is a frequent cause.

  • 15'' MBP + M4 SSD + Kernel Panics + Data Doubler = dead end

    Hey there,
I've been dealing with an issue since the snow leopard days, and it got worse sometime in Mountain Lion. 2.66 GHz i7 w/ 8GB DDR.
A brief history: In January 2013 I replaced the main HD on my MBP with a 500GB Crucial M4 SSD. I simultaneously upgraded to 8GB of Crucial DDRAM.
For a year or so everything ran at blazing speeds: I use Ableton Live for music production and use many plug-ins along with it, so CPU load has been pushed more than once, never to any place that was immediately fatal. Slowly, with increasing frequency, I began to experience unpredictable kernel panics. Once a month at first, then twice, then once a week, etc. Usually they would happen while doing something low-CPU such as browsing the internet with few or no apps open besides my browser. By September 2014, I t was happening multiple times per day. A colleague suggested moving my SSD to a data doubler and putting the original HD back in the place it started.
Trusting this colleague and some light reading, I ordered an OWC data doubler and installed it. Per "about this mac -> system report," the doubler is properly installed: under "SATA/SATA Express" there are two "Intel 5 Series Chipset" drop downs (see pics). I've tried several HDs and the SSD in the doubler to no avail, and all the same hard drives do show up in the original SATA port (pics demonstrate). In no case can I find the doubler's drive in Disk Utility or in Recovery mode. The most interesting next step I have heard is to open the BIOS (i.e. firmware, right?) and tell my laptop to look for the SSD in the second SATA port. Any ideas?
    Other mentionables:
-The kernel panics only occur with the SSD in the main HD port, even after formatting. Booting from Original HD or external HD do not experience these issues
-The SSD is SATA III and both my laptop's connections are SATA II; I don't think that's an issue as the M4 can operate at 3gb / s and does so in the main HD bay
-I haven't done any RAM-isolating trouble shooting, though as mentioned the kernel panics only happen with the SSD in the main HD bay
Thank you so much for any energy you put into my issue.
    All the best,
    Kevin

As (bad) luck would have it, I don't have the discs that came with the machine .  Isn't that always the way?
At any rate, I figured that would be a suggestion and searched the web for looking to see if what I need (AHT) could possibly be downloaded.  Looks like some folks have found a way/location to download AHT from the web from some of the posts I've seen, but I've come up empty handed.

  • Can't deal with these kernel panics... Should I cave and buy a new SSD?

    Specs: OSX.8.2 / ADATA SX900 256GB SSD / 15in Mid-2010 MBP / No longer under AppleCare
    Problem: Intermittent kernel panics
    What I believe:
    - Source of issue is SSD
         - Took laptop to Apple and 3rd party Apple Certified Specialist, both showed clean ext hardware tests except for SSD, but could not pinpoint issue.
         - Problem travels with drive from body to body.
    - ADATA Firmware/Sandforce SSD does not play with OSX.8.2
         - Kernel panics are not patterned. Never point to specific recurring processes/threads... almost always background/native operations (windowserver, Finder, iTunes, etc). Never during overheating or high graphics/CPU stress. Rarely—but not never—during 3rd party operations.*
    - It is NOT my RAM
         - Reset PRAM, no change.
         - Memtest clean.
Other things I have done to try to be proactive:
    - Clean re-install of OS.
    - Erased disk, partition. Repaired both before reinstall of OS.
I am still experiencing the kernel panics and it is making it impossible for me to work. Should I cave and buy an OCZ SSD? Thanks in advance.
*I am not pretending to be an expert at deciphering panic/thread crash reports, but I believe I have done enough research to get the gist and to have seen a pattern if there were any. If you would like me to post my most recent reports, I would be happy to!

  • 2008 MBP Keyboard Issues + Kernel Panics?

The issue I am having basically boils down to this: the caps lock light begins flickering, and then the whole keyboard goes wonky (phantom strokes, repeated strokes, etc).  Often this ends in a kernel panic (I will post a log later) .  D:
Now the history behind all of this (and I can't say which parts are entirely relevant, so some of this may be unrelated computer bizarre-ness):
Got my MBP in August 2008, having never owned a mac before.  The first tissue I recall having was within a month of getting the computer--the entire screen got blocky and jumbled, like tv static, and the computer froze.  Called tech support, and they had me reset the PRAM, which resolved the issue.  A couple of months after that, my keyboard/trackpad started failing to work--my cursor would outright disappear off the screen, and the computer would not respond to keyboard presses or trackpad use.  A USB tablet still functioned properly.  The condition would be fixed by a restart, but would re-occur fairly often.  I saw the genius bar several times over the issue, and each time they sort of ignored the issue (maybe they didn't believe me?  I don't know).  Finally after a little over a year of this I finally got the problem to reproduce in-store--and immediately they recommended hardware repairs.  This also, incidentally, is when I found out that my Applecare had not been registered correctly, so I was showing up out of warranty.  Awesome.
At the same time, I was having really bizarro crashes--the computer (plugged in) would wake itself up from sleep, eject a cd, and then completely shut down ALL ON ITS OWN.  Then it wouldn't start up again unless I reset the PRAM.  No idea what that's about.
So I fight with them for a couple months about the Applecare thing, and finally they agree that they'll do the repair if I bring in the box.  So at this point they replace the keyboard, top case assembly, and the entire top screen part (since I had a couple of dead pixels).  Everthing works great...  for a couple months.  Then the issue of the flickery caps lock/screwy keyboard/kernel panics start.  I never had a kernel panic before the repair.  So I take it in again, and they replace the keyboard again.  And again, it works fine...  for a couple of months.  Then the weirdness starts again.
So this last time, I take it in, describle all the crashes and the keyboard problem and show the kernel logs, and the genius bar suggests that it may be the logic board.  I'm still showing up out of warranty, so she takes the box, and in roughly 60 seconds, gets my warranty to show up.  You could probably hear my jaw hit the floor--why hadn't anyone done this the last umpteen times I'd brought the darn thing in??  But anywho, she does a hardware test on my computer, and concludes that something IS up with the logic board--whenever she tries to test it, it just hangs indefinitely.  She was also worried about bad ram, so we replace that too.  And for good measure, the keyboard/top case again.  In addition, they wipe the computer and do a clean install.
This was 4 weeks ago.  I haven't put any of my applications and whatnot back on, and suddenly about a week ago the problems started again.  What in the world could be causing this???  My Applecare expires in August, and honestly, I feel like if they can't get this fixed before then, My computer should be replaced under warranty (I don't doubt that they are doing their best to fix it, but I can tell they are playing pin the tail on the donkey here, and the thing's been abnormal since day one).  Thoughts, anyone?

I'm still lost as to why the monitor is causing panics. Any ideas on that.
No.  You might contact the technical staff of the monitors manufacturer for assistance.
    Ciao.

  • My mid 2010 MBP is having kernel panic issues.

I am at my wit's end with this darn machine. I have sent my MBP to both Mac Authority and Apple's Genious Bar. Mac Authority couldn't tell me anything.
After several HD reformats and OS reinstalls the thing will kernel panic when I do anything like use expose, launchpad, even while I'm just browsing through my documents. After several hours of diagnostics, Apple said I had a bad HD cable and replaced it. Although it passed their stress tests, the problem still persists.
Any help in this matter would be appreciated...I can't afford to invest in another one and I have a couple of projects I'm in the middle of.

Has it been tested with a clean installation of OS X -- no third-party software present? And no peripherals connected?
If so, no one here is going to be able to tell you anything you don't already know.
