2011 Time capsule poor performance or am i missing something?

Hope someone can help me on this as I am beginning to beileve all those nay-sayers that rubbish the apple products..
I have just bought the new 2011 2TB Time capsule, was so excited to see its performance, and then so disapointed to see that there is no improvement on my existing free router that was provided by my ISP 2 years ago!!!
Mt TC is directly connected to my original modem (which also acts as a wireless router..but the tech team at my ISP advised that this would be ok), and after wondering around my house with my i-phone 4, checking networks sppeds and range....it appears that my old network reaches farther in almost all places in my house, and the speeds are not notably different.   In some cases I even lost the network completely on my TC, whilst my old wireless router reception still appeared on my i-phone.
I am hoping there is a logical solution that will improve my TC performance...otherwise I will have to join those naysayers.   ...So far, very dissapointed but didnt want to post my comments on to the apple product web site until I checked i am not missing something obvious.
Note that when setting the TC up, I followed all the instructions, and selected create New network (rather than the bridge option).
Would welcome all advise and help

so if the tc is connected via a LAN connection directly from one of the ethernet ports of the original router...I still have to put it in bridge mode?
Yes, if you want to follow networking rules. As I mentioned, you only want one device handling DHCP (IP addresses) and NAT functions on a network. your modem/router provided by the ISP is doing that now. Any other routers need to be configured in Bridge Mode to allow the "main" router to control the addressing on the network correctly.
...if so, i could change to bridge mode to see if range increases (they are currently in the same room)
You can give it a try. That won't do anything about possible wireless interference issues, but it won't hurt to try.
Be sure power down the entire network after you configure the TC in Bridge Mode. Then start the modem/router first and let it run by itself a few minutes. Then start the TC the same way. Continue starting devices one at a time about a minute apart until everything is powered back up on the network.
i will also contact my isp tech time and ask how i turn the wireless function off the original modem.
The settings on most devices can be changed by entering in an IP address into your browser. For example, for an XYZ device, the default IP addess might be something like 192.168.1.254, for example. That will bring up a log in page with various pages or tabs for connection, wireless setup, etc. It should be a simple matter to turn off the wireless function on the modem/router that you have.
If you don't know the default IP address, you can probably find this by doing a Google search using the make and model number of your modem/router. So, the search box might look something like this:
Default IP address for XYZ model number 1234

  • Time Capsule poor performance

    Hi all!
One week ago desided to renew my home wifi network. I've change provider's bnc modem and home router Linksys WRT54GL + Linksys NMH410 (NAS) for: Cisco EuroDOCSIS 3.0 EPC3825 (former Scientific Atlanta, modem + b-g-n wifirouter) + TC 2T.
As far as EPC3825  wifi AP is pretty unreliable:
    1. I've swiched off radio module
    2. Connect (in bridge mode) TC2 to EPC3825 via gig Ethernet to use it as main wifi AP.
    3. Made a few tests with iPad, iPhone, MacAir, Apple TV3 and PC.
My conclusion is: TC is wonderful white box for the designers interior.
If you need REAL N wifi RELIABLE connection and REAL NAS or Media server - TC is a wrong choice.
You need really strong nervs to see how TC drops connection with PC while transferring photo library (4Gb!? total volume).
But the most funny is the speed of transferring, From 1Mbps to 500Kbps (open space, 3 m distance between Asus Zenbook to TC).
While TC making files back you also "feel" it if you are watching MP4 stream video from TC-iPad-Apple TV.
It is pretty slow even to use it as an external disk. The problem is in cash memory I think...If somebody have a chance to try a toy named: iFlash Drive, he will understand me.
TC is ideal for retired on a pension people with a lot for free time...
    Resuming:
    1. I already puted back Linksys NMH410 (NAS).
    2. Connected Aruba AP-105 for wifi to mu router-modem
    3. Packed my TC back and will wait for the next birthday of my friend designer to use TC as a gift...
I would like to stress, it is my OWN experience and to note that I'm workin in IT near 18th years...

    Hi
Did you reset the TC wireless to SMB compliant names. Windows has no end of trouble with AFP type naming.. especially apostrophe.. names of network devices and wireless SSID should be short, no spaces.. pure alphanumeric.
Wireless N is only compliant with WPA2 AES (Personal) security.
The way TC can chop and change channels causes issues.. it is better to lock the channels.. 1, 6, 11 or 13 in Europe are non-overlapping channels.. depending on your environment you should try each in turn.
TC though I agree is not a NAS.. it is a wireless backup unit for Mac Laptops.. using Time Machine.
It can have severe issues with win7 networking in particular. .you should turn on the guest account and set the workgroup correctly.
Lion is also an issue IMHO.. and the later version firmware for the TC..
I run Snow Leopard and 7.5.2 on any TC I happen to be testing.. I repair them.
Works very well. Although even then you do get networking glitches.. don't have wireless and ethernet at the same time.. for instance.
Perhaps if you posted some issues.. we could have worked through some it..
But I don't blame you for being disappointed.

  • Time Machine/Time Capsule Awful Performance?

I am not sure that anyone can help here so maybe its just an experience reported.  I would be interested to know if this is common and if there are any fixes.
I had a drive report problems in Disk Utility - its a 1Tb hard drive in a MacBook Pro that's 80%+ full.  Disk Utility said save all and then reformat the disk as it could not fix it.  Having decided that I could not afford to lose any of the data I bought a new Time Capsule despite already having one of the older ones which had a Time Machine backup of the MacBook Pro already on it.  I do not trust things and did not want to reformat the drive only to find that the Time Machine backup was not going to work.  So I backed it up again on the new Time Capsule so that I had two copies on two Time Capsules to avoid as many issues as possible.
Firstly, the new backup took three days.  I cannot fathom why a fast PC on a Gigabit Ethernet wired connection is so incredibly slow copying files.  There was four feet of Ethernet cable betwen the Mac and the Time Capsule.  I was watching the connection and it was around 300Kb/second which is ludicrous.  I have seen plently of folks complaining about this and I can see why.  However, having waited three days for the back up I finally erased the drive that Disk Utility was complaing about. Then the fun starts...
Having used the Disk Utility to erase the drive, I selected the Restore option in the disk utlity - and yes, this was obviously wrong - and selected the Time Machine backup that was showing in the right hand selection menu.  It said drag the names into the form and I did.  Of course I did not realise that this restore was useless.  And there was no way of knowing as all the messages told me just that it was copying files - I had no idea which files because it did not say and if it did I would have caught my mistake pretty fast.  Instead, I waited for a stupidly long three days for it to copy the files back only to find that they were all sparsebundle files and completely useless.  The Disk Utility was unhelpful and did not say that restoring directly from Time Capsule was a stupid thing to do.  So three days wasted.  Apple - put some useful help in there so that this is avoided and show the files that a are being copied so that errors can be caught in less than three days.
Next erase the disk again with Disk Utility and go into Time Machine to get the files back.  This time it looked as though it was copying the files back but again it was incredibly massively SLOW.  As low as 200Kb/second which is farcical.  Again, no indication of which files it is copying back.  Wait days - it originally said 24 days!! But then two thirds of the way through it pops a message that says it cannot copy a file because I do not own it.  No idea which file as it did not say.  No idea why I would not own a file in my own User directory either when I am admin.  No option except to click OK.  Did that.  New message - there is an error with some really helpful message number and again only an OK button (and I thought Microsoft error messages were cryptic and poor!).  Click that and the whole thing craps out!!!  Gone!  Then I discover that a Time Capsule recovery cannot start from where it left off and also that the User directory it was recovering is greyed out in the Finder and you cannot click on it. OK - then maybe the Time Machine recovery can overwrite the files it thinks it had already copied...  No such luck.  After starting the recovery again and waiting ages for it to count all the files, it then says there isn't enough space to recover to. I am about to throw it all out of the window.  Now I have to start all over again having trashed the whole directory it had got two thirds of the way through recovering.
So I still do not have any of my files back.  This is way less than impressive.  So I figure I will try and recover one of the main folders as I have no way of knowing that it won't come across whichever file stopped it last time and that this file will stop it again.  The folder in question is 14.7Gb and the copy process is stating that it will take four hours.  The transfer is at 202Kb/Second.  I could do it way faster with a memory stick.  And right now it still has not finished copying the files... And I am pretty mad by now too.  This has lost me so much time.
I do not know what other's experience of using Time Machine and Time Capsule is but mine is defintely less than stellar.  In fact I worked on systems 20 years ago that were better than this and faster than this and way less frustrating with better messages telling you what is going on.  I have no idea how anyone puts up with it and no idea how Apple can think this is any good at all.  The fact that one file that it cannot read for whatever reason (on a brand new Time Capsule) stops you from retrieving ANY files from the backup and then craps out is frankly ludicrous.  I can only assume that I will have to retrieve each folder independently until I find the one that has the file in it that it does not like - I cannot think of any other way of doing it unless someone out there knows better.
In future maybe I will just add a USB hard drive to the Mac Pro and simply copy all the files to it as a backup......  I will update this with any other experiences assuming I get my data back.
Time Machine and Time Capsule:  User friendly - No; Ridiculously slow to almost be unusable: - Yes.  Come on Apple (if you ever read these messages) - get your act together for professional and business users.  A 1970s mainframe with magnetic tapes would have done better than this.  I know that because I worked on them and having been the CTO of three public software companies I can safely say that something this awful would never have got out of my door.....
Any tips to improve the situation welcome.

It would be helpful to the rest of us and any future searches if you would tell us how the issue was solved. Please let us know.

  • My internet is only connecting when the time capsule is performing a backup how can I fix this? I use the wireless for my computer and not connecting is frustrating.

The airport time capsule 2TB is only connecting to the web when performing a backup, it just started doing this how do I fix it?

That is a weird one.. never heard of it drop out except doing backups.
Reset the TC to factory settings.
    The Factory Reset universal
Unplug your TC/AE. Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. The time is not important.. it is the front LED rapid flashing that indicates you are in factory mode.
    Release reset.
If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have released reset at some point and try again.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Redo the setup with all short names no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
It should then work fine.. but I need more info if you still have problems.
What modem? Is it a router?
    How is the TC connected?
    Is the computer running Mavericks?

  • Airport extreme to extend time capsule range - performance degradation

I have a time capsule - had no wireless coverage on my patio. Installed an extreme base station as an extender and the good news is I now have coverage on my patio. Bad news is the performance in my office went from good to bad. Office had thruput of 5Mb per sec before installing the extender to around 300Kb per second after installing the extreme base station as an extender. When I unplug the extreme base station performance in the office goes back to good - 5Mb per second. Of course when I unplug extreme base station I lose coverage on the patio. I thought the network on my mac book pro would pick the transmitter with the strongest signal. When moving to the office I would restart the MACbook PRO to make sure it wasn't still using the same transmitter as when I moved to patio to office. The workaround is to leave the extender unplugged unless I am on the patio - an ugly kludge. Any insight help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Mike

Thanks for all your help and the explanations.
Not looking to beat a dead horse - everything is working to my satisfaction but but my head is spinning on some of this stuff.
Originally on the TC 'Radio Mode' was set to '802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)'.
I changed it to '802.11n only (5Ghz)'. That resolved my issues and I am very happy about that.
Per your post the iphone was not 802.11n capable and my poking around on GOOGLE seems to confirm that.
However, my iphone 3g looks like it is utilizing my wireless network. I see a fan icon vs. 3g icon. When I first take the iphone off sleep, the icon is 3g but it changes to the fan icon. I can confirm it is using my wireless network through an application. The app is IPOD keeper which syncs my passwords. It shows it is picking up an DHCP ip address and port number from my private wireless network. 192.168.2.xxx.
My wife has a first gen iphone and an Ipad - she is out of town and I can't test those devices. If the first gen iphone can't utilize the wireless network - no big deal - it's simply a phone for her. Hopefully the Ipad will work - that is a big deal for her.
I'm always trying to learn and appreciate your time and help.

  • Time Capsule WIFI Performance

I have a Time Capsule that has been working perfectly for well over a year but now our devices are experiencing very slow performance accessing websites (in many cases they time out).  I have confirmed we have good internet connection and this is not isolated to one device (MacBook, iPhones, and iPads).  I have unplugged everything several times and this doesn't solve the performance problem.  I am wondering if there is another way to reboot the Time Capsule or if there is a cache that needs to be cleared?  Or another problem?  Thanks for the consideration.

The latest update to TC firmware was a bit of a downer.
Did you do a full factory reset of the TC? I would do that to make sure nothing of old setup remains.. do a fully clean setup.. use all names SMB type.. that means, short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.
Use WPA2 Personal wireless security only. Use fixed wireless channels and try in turn 11, 6, 1 at 2.4ghz as those are the only non-overlapping.
No good, then simply go back to the previous firmware.. hold the option key when you select the firmware and go back to 7.6.1 and do factory reset and setup again as above.

  • CISCO 2125 very poor design or i'm missing something?

CISCO 2125 bad design by Cisco, product development should revise.
I noticed Cisco product sales support staff is pushing 2125 WLAN controller as great WLAN solution. They got me into considering one as something what will work just fine.
I strongly disagree, this product is extremely poor design and it is missing gigabit port for LAN connection.
This product will support 25 APs with its eight 10/100 Mbps ports. Only 6 APs can be linked per port. So for 25 APs you are already using 5 ports. Per manual POE ports 7 & 8 should not be used for anything other than single AP so that leaves you with only 1 port #6 to connect to your LAN.
Yes, that is true, 100Mbps for all the WLAN users on the 25 access points and product is advertised to support high speed N wi-fi capable of doing 300Mbps per user node. What a nonsense? makes no sense even for lightweight use.
Makes you wonder who approved such product for production and what a bad design on the $6K piece of equipment
CISCO please put a Gigabit port on the 2100 series or stop marketing and pushing such poorly designed product

I don't know who you discussed your design with but you were not educated on the use of the product very well. The 2125 is meant to support more than 12 APs in a very light client deployment of 20 or fewer users. If you need more horsepower then you need the 4402-25. This is a reseller issue and not a Cisco design issue. I have deployed over 300 2100 series controllers and the only problem I have is with customer education. See the attached guidelines.

  • Accessing Time Capsule via MobileMe

Just bought the newest version of Time Capsule. Can't figure out how to access it via MobileMe. I went into the capsule settings in airport utility and put in my password for mobileme login info. Also, back to my mac is turned on. Still, I don't see my time capsule in MobileMe.
    Am I missing something?

Are you trying to find it by visiting the MobileMe web site? It won't show up there.
This feature simply makes it show up in your Finder's sidebar under Shared when you are remote.

  • Extremely slow performance transferring data over USB with Time Capsule

I have the 2TB wireless Time Capsule. I have it setup as an extension to my current WiFi at home, since I already had a WLAN router. I have an external harddrive (500gig) that I connected to my Time Capsule because I wanted to transfer data from the Time Capsule to the external HD. The external HD is formatted with FAT32 file system, so read/write is no problem.
When, using my MacBook Pro, I navigated to the Time Capsule and dragged files over to the connected USB harddrive (connected directly in the Time Capsule), the performance to transfer is extremely SLOW! It was slower than doing the transfer completely wirelessly (USB drive connected to laptop and transfer wirelessly from TC)!
I do not understand this at all! It should be a simple transfer using the USB connection! When I do a transfer from my laptop directly to the USB harddrive, with it connected directly to the laptop, the transfers are super fast!
What happened? Can someone please explain this or tell me what I need to do?
    Thank you!

    I am still confused here.
My original question was regarding the use of my USB external harddrive. It was connected to the back of the TC. The TC was wirelessly speaking to my WLAN router. Using my laptop (also wirelessly speaking to WLAN router), I navigated to the TC and saw 2 listings - one for the data on the harddrive in the TC and one for the new external USB drive connected to the back of the TC. I wanted to transfer data from the harddrive in the TC to the USB external drive. Based on what I expected, I thought the transfer rate would merely be limited by the USB 2.0 interface that is being used by the external drive. However, I was definitely wrong! The transfer rate (shown by the estimate in time to transfer the data by my MacBook Pro) was doubled to 14 hrs.
Originally, it was only 7 hrs when the USB external drive is connected directly to my laptop and I connect to the TC wirelessly. Weird!
So why doesn't the TC simply transfer the data from its internal harddrive to the external USB drive directly without using any wireless technology?
The second question I have is regarding the setup of the TC itself. I have a NetGear WLAN router and its an "n" router. So the speed is good. I have my TC currently downstairs from the WLAN router. Therefore the TC is setup as simply a wireless harddrive. It speaks through the WLAN router in order to be available to all my laptops in my house. My question is whether it should instead be directly connected to the WLAN router using an ethernet cable? Would this improve my overall transfer rates to/from the TC?
    Thanks so much.

  • Time Machine and Time Capsule don't seem to work well together?

    Reposted.
I get the feeling there are some serious problems with the combination of Time Machine and Time Capsule.
This is extremely disappointing, as the idea of a centralized backup device on the network (instead of disks attached to each and every computer we have running Leopard) seemed like such a good idea and a good way to supplement our tape-based backup that takes place with Retrospect.
In reality, it's a disaster on both Intel and PowerPC systems. All systems and the Time Capsule are fully up to date with software updates from Apple. I have two 1TB Time Capsule units. It goes something like this:
    1. I have a few systems (mainly Intel) that work perfectly with the Time Capsule. There are no complaints and no issues at all. These systems just quietly run their backups as they should. They are the definite minority--maybe one or two have worked properly.
    2. I have some systems that complain from time to time (mainly PowerPC) but will back up with a little encouragement. These too are the minority.
    3. And finally, I have systems that are nothing but pain. These are both Intel and PowerPC systems. They are also the majority of the systems I have. The most common problem is sudden loss of the credentials needed to access the Time Capsule hardware--a user will be going along about their business when the Mac OS asks for the Time Capsule user name and password--after it's already been supplied and backups have been running. This should simply never ever happen.
Another charming behavior I've seen is corruption of the sparse disk image file that each computer creates on the Time Capsule. Time Machine will complain that it can't perform the backup, and examining the disk image file with Disk Utility shows it to be severely damaged. Turning off Time Machine, deleting the corrupted sparse image file, and starting over fixes it. For a while.
Finally, there are the machines (again, both Intel and PowerPC) that just can't seem to actually get through the first backup run. They either go so far and can't continue, or never actually manage to get started. I've checked the disks in these computers and found no problem with the hardware or file system. The installations are fresh and fully up to date.
Meanwhile, I have computers running Leopard with directly attached disks configured for use with Time Machine. One is a QuickSilver that isn't even officially supported by Leopard, with a Firewire attached disk. It doesn't skip a beat. The other is an Intel Mac mini being used with Mac OS X Server 10.5.4 and a USB external hard drive. These machines just do their thing, and I never have to babysit them.
These problems with the Time Capsule have been so severe that I've just given up on most of the computers and shut off Time Machine entirely. We have tape backups that run over the week, so it's not a huge loss. But that's not what really made me throw up my hands and say "enough"...no, that was the speed. Even with just one computer backing up to it, the Time Capsule seemed terribly slow. Watching the progress indicator was just painful.
I put in a word about all of this to my independent Apple dealer, and they say I'm definitely not the first to complain about some or all of these problems. In fact, they told me they were going to set up a test lab in their shop to see if they could duplicate these findings. I have no doubt that they can.
There are a total of seven computers backing up to one Time Capsule. They all store maybe ~40GB worth of data including the OS. There are about six computers on the other. Because of the way the network is laid out, the Time Capsule is connected to a Gigabit switch (and that is the only thing it's connected to). It cannot be used as the router, although I know Apple suggests this. The Airport section is disabled--I have no need or desire to use it. Some computers link up at 100 megabits, others at 1 gigabit. There are no network problems--we have no problems moving large amounts of data across the same network to our tape backup machine.
Is anyone else seeing these kinds of problems? Am I doing something wrong or expecting too much from Time Capsule?

I may be on to something. The Time Capsules I have live in a telephone equipment room that is indoors but not directly air conditioned or heated. It doesn't ever get too hot to be comfortable in there--the highest I've ever seen the temperature was 80 degrees (F). Most of the time the temperature is between 60-78 degrees.
I happened to touch one of them the other day while it was in use, and I noticed that the casing was hot to the touch...not dangerously so I suppose, but much hotter than I would have expected.
So I turned a small fan on both Time Capsules and have left it running. And I've noticed that not only do backups seem to complete more quickly, the reliability is also better. I am going to try some of my most troublesome computers once again just to see what happens.
I know there is a fan pointed at the hard drive in the Time Capsule, but I can't see how it does much in the way of cooling things down. In my opinion, it's just surrounded by too many heat producing devices to do much good...after all, not only is there a 7200 RPM hard disk in there, but also a 500MHz Marvell processor and radio set.

  • Can I use the Time Capsule strictly for system backup and continue to use my Airport Extreme for all my wireless needs

I want to use the Apple Time Capsule as an external drive and continue to use my Airport Extreme for all my wireless needs. Can I do that? The reason I ask is that my Time Machine utility cannot find the TIme Capsule - it only shows me the Airport Extreme, even when I "Rescan". SO I am unable to use the Time Capsule.

You will need to connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
Perform a "hard reset" on the Time Capsule by holding in the reset button for 9-10 seconds, then give it another minute to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Open AirPort Utility, select the Time Capsule, and click Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab located below the row of icons to assign a name to the Time Capsule, a device password, and adjust Time Zone settings.
Next, click the Wireless tab located to the right of the Time Capsule tab
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off
Click the Internet icon, then click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right to save the settings and allow 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart to a green light.
    You are all set

  • HT4628 Airport on Mac is searching for Wi-Fi from Time capsule. I can get into my back-up, but internet. Modem is fine( I can get online with Ethernet cable). I was told it is a difference in IP addresses ( outgoing from modem and streaming from capsule).

What might be a problem with IP addresses? I did contact Time Warner Cable about my service, there is no problems at the modem until it gets to Time Capsule. I have everything in the house running off of wireless, now nether asset is working. I was  able to connect to Time Capsule wirelessly, but Internet is no go. Any ideas? Thank you!

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule) (Note: Performing this type of reset will NOT affect any data stored on the Time Capsule's internal HDD.)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Using Time Capsule for Backup Drives, Storage, and an iTunes Server?

I have a 500 GB Time Capsule to accompany my Macbook. The Time Capsule connects to my household's existing wifi network and is not connected by a cord to my computer. I went through a great deal of difficulty setting it up, but now it's time to start using it. I just canceled my off-site backup service, so I really need and appreciate your help and advice.
I want my Time Capsule to perform a few different tasks:
    1) Time Machine backups for TWO different user accounts on my Macbook
    2) Additional file storage
    3) iTunes server
Is this possible? If so, how would I accomplish it?

    1) Time Machine backups for TWO different user accounts on my Macbook
Time Machine backs up the ENTIRE hard drive. It is not user dependent.
    2) Additional file storage
    Yes
    3) iTunes server
You can use it to store your iTunes library. However iTunes will need to run on your MacBook to play the music.

  • Restore from Time Capsule backup set

What is the procedure to recover the other paritions (multiple) which are backed up using time machine?
I am using Time capsule to maintain automated backups of my Macbook Pro. Backups to the Time capsule are performing correctly and I can see "pink" breakpoints when I enter time machine which means the backup sets are available on my time capsule. I have 3 partitions on my MBP hard drive and all these drives are included in backups to be done.
When I tried to recover my entire backup set to a new machine I was able to restore all the contents of my boot drive (mac os partition) but the data on other partitions is not recovered. I tried multiple times with different options to recover my data on other partitions but no success. What is the procedure to recover the other paritions which are backed up using time machine? Please refer the attachment to understand my partitions which are backed up but not restored?
I really need help on this matter as I need to streamline restore process in my organization using time capsule.
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind Regards,

Me.. oh no.. I would never be so foolish as to depend on TM to do any such things.
    Look at another Pondini reference.

As you have discovered what looks like a simple restore turns out to be nighmarish.. that is the nature of TM.

  • Migration of TIME capsule backups

How do I migrate the old files to new TC so that I do not lose my previous revision history? (I bought a new 1TB time capsule to replace an old 500GB TC. I also want to start using the new larger TC by itself, and don't want to wipe the old TC files.

    Information is in here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Lots of info there so I copy pasted the necessary part below. It's almost at the very bottom of the article.
Mac OS X v10.6: How to transfer your backups from your current hard drive to a new hard drive
If you upgrade to a new hard drive with a larger capacity, you may want to transfer your existing Time Machine backups to it before using it for regular backups.  To keep your existing backups on your new, larger backup hard drive, follow these steps:
    Connect your new hard drive.
In Disk Utility, make sure it has a GUID partition and is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  If needed, reformat the drive as Mac OS Extended with a GUID partition. If you do not know how, see the steps in this article.  Note: Back up any data on the hard drive before you format it.
Select the new drive's icon on the desktop and choose Get Info from the File menu.
Make sure "Ignore ownership on this volume" is not enabled.
Open Time Machine preferences in System Preferences.
Slide the Time Machine switch to Off.
In Finder, double-click the current backup hard drive to open its Finder window.
Drag the folder "Backups.backupd" to the new hard drive.
Enter an administrator user name and password, then click OK to start the copying process.  This may take some time to complete because all your backups will be copied.
In Time Machine System Preferences click "Select Disk…"
Select your new hard drive, then click "Use for Backup."
Now, on your new hard drive, you will have all of your existing backups from the previous backup hard drive plus have more room for more new backups.
Time Capsule, Mac OS X v10.6.3 or later: How to transfer your back up from an existing Time Capsule to a new oneFor this process, you should leave your computer in the same room as the Time Capsules, or use one Ethernet cable to connect your Mac to the Ethernet port on the existing Time Capsule, then use another Ethernet cable to connect from the existing Time Capsule to the new Time Capsule.
Configure your Time Capsule for your network. See the documentation that came with your Time Capsule for information about setting it up on your network.
Open Time Machine preferences in System Preferences.
Slide the Time Machine switch to Off.
    Open a Finder window.
Locate both Time Capsules listed in the SHARED section of the navigation pane on the left of the Finder window.  Note: If you do not see your Time Capsules in that section, choose Preferences from the Finder menu and make sure "Connected servers" is checked under SHARED.
Select the name of the new Time Capsule in the navigation pane. The default name is "Time Capsule xxxxxx", with xxxxxx being the last digits of the ID printed on the bottom of the Time Capsule.
Mount the volume by double-clicking the name of the volume in the Finder window's main section. The default drive name is "Data".
Open a new Finder window by pressing Command-N, or by choosing File > New Finder Window.
Repeat the previous 2 steps with the other Time Capsule, to mount it.
Drag your backup disk image from the current Time Capsule to the new Time Capsule. This can take some time to complete because your entire backup will be copied.
Open Time Machine preferences in System Preferences.
Click "Select Disk...", then select your new Time Capsule.
Perform a Time Machine back up.
After the back up, you can remove the Ethernet cables if desired and configure your wireless network to your liking.
