2012 Airport Express Digital Output

Does the new 2012 AE pass 24 bit 192Khz audio from the optical digital output?
DV

Ok I bought one to answer my own question: can't get it pass anything > than 16-bit 44.1 KHz when tested with an iMac & Airfoil by setting the OSX system output to rates >44.1 KHz.

  • Where can you get the power cord for a 2012 airport express?

Where can you get a power cord for a 2012 airport express or the equivalent? I couldn't find one in the online store.

I'm sure the OP found his solution, but I wanted to share mine in case it helps some future seeker.
There are a lot of brand new cords on eBay for less than $10 including shipping, which is way cheaper than the $39 stereo connector kit or an AC adapter from a retailer.  I just bought a used-like-new one for $5.50.
The cord is made by Volex, part number APC7Q.  The Apple part number is M9573LL/A.  If the seller got it from the stereo adapter kit, they'll probably list it under MD836LL/A, which is the kit's part number.  I got the best search results on eBay using just the Volex part number.
    Best of luck!

  • Does 2012 airport express support MIMO?

Does 2012 airport express support MIMO? if not, will it slow the internat speed with ipad air?

    Welcome,
Probably not, but Apple have stated recently that MIMO is build in to the new WiFi kit, see:

  • (2012) AirPort Express disapears off network

So I have one of the new Apple TV style AirPort Express's and it's only purpose is to stream music. Unfortunately everytime something is played from a computer it completely drops off the network. (Signal strength is about 74% before dropping)
My routers status page and Airport Utility show no connection from the AE whatsoever, yet the AE status LED stays Green.  The only way to get it back up is to pull the plug.
The most annoying part of this is I have 3 Apple TV's that work perfectly, all the time! Suggestions are very welcome.
(Note that I've already tried disabling IPv6 on the Mac)
    Hardware:
    Asus RT-N16 w/ DD-WRT build 14929
    2012 AirPort Express w/ Firmware 7.6.2
    2012 MacBook Air w/ OS X 10.8.1
    AirPort Info:
Wireless Mode: Join a Wireless Network
    Routing: Bridged
SNR: 54; -34 Signal, -88 Noise (as reported from Router)
    Assigned IPv4: Static
    IPv6 Mode: Local-Link Only
    AirPlay: No password set
    Router Info:
    Network Mode: NG-Mixed, 2.4GHz, 20MHz channels
    Encryption: WPA2-PSK (AES)
    ACK Timing: 100 meters
    Beacon: 100ms
    CTS Protection: Disabled
    Preamble: Short
    Shortslot: Short
SPI Firewall On: Set to filter Multicast & Port 113 (IDENT)
    VPN Passthrough: Disabled
    UPnP: Enabled
    TCP timeout: 360 Seconds
    UDP timeout: 120 Seconds
DHCP Lease: 720 Minutes (Not that this matters with a Static IP)

    Update:
Tried rebooting the router multiple times, doing a factory reset and all 3 primary 2.4GHz channels. Then I downloaded the pervious version of AirPort Utility (AU 6.x is missing logging) to check the logs but when the AE restarts the logs get cleared.
Also when the dam thing dies it takes the entire network with it for about 45 seconds; the link speed on the router drops from 144Mbps to <1.

  • Connect Airport Express digital to DAC to high end audio

I want to connect my airport express to my DAC. The problem I have is that my DAC only has a COAX optical line in. The Airport Express has a digital out but I understand it is only Toslink. What is the best way to connect them together?
    Any suggestions are very welcome!
    Regards, Harm

You could look at the Sound Blaster DTS-610 for $99. I used one to convert from the digital mini jack on a SB extreme audio card to a coaxial jack on my Yamaha receiver for 5.1 surround before I got a new motherboard with optical output.

  • HT201343 Apple Tv mirror + Airport Express audio output = How to?

I want to mirror my MacBook to the Apple Tv but I want to send the audio to the Airport Express.
If I ask my Apple Tv to send the output to the Airport, it works just fine.
If, after that, I use the iPhone to mirror the screen and watch some video on youtube or Twitch, it works fine either.
But if I use my MacBook Pro to mirror the screen, the audio output is sent to my TV through the HDMI cord.
Is that any way that I can solve this?
What I want to do is just mirror my MacBook screen with the audio coming out through the Airport Speaker.
    Thanks for any help, folks!

    Hi wennberginho!
I have a couple of articles that should be able to help you with this issue. If you have a 1st generation Apple TV, you will want to reference this article:

  • Airport Extreme + airport express - problem outputting to multiple speakers

    Hello,
I have set up my airport express by joining my existing Airport Extreme base station wireless network. When I play my music in iTunes, I am able to select either the Computer or Airtunes for the output in the drop down box in the lower right of iTunes. When I select Airtunes, the music streams no problem to my remote speakers connected to Airport Express. However, when I try to select Multiple Speakers in the drop down menu in iTunes, a pop up Remote Speakers box opens - when I select both the Computer and Airtunes in this box, I get an error message - "An errror occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "Airtunes". An unknown error occurred (-3256)." Since the error occurs only when I try to selct both the computer internal speakers and the remote speakers, but I am able to connect to the remote speakers by themselves, I am really confused. Any thoughts?
    Charly

Just to clarify, the goal is to play iTunes on both the computer's internal speakers and my remote speakers at the same time.

  • Airport express & digital audio through usb

Can airport express stream digital audio through usb to use with a usb DAC?

No. Digital optical audio is only available via the AirPort Express' audio port only.

  • Airport Express Speaker output very quiet with 60-cycle hum

I've previously hooked up my Airport Express to my stereo system via AirTunes, and it worked fine. But I just moved and set up my home network with my Airport Express connected to the stereo with the mini-stereo adapter. But now, when I play music over AirTunes, I can hear the music very faintly, but it's about the same volume as a 60-cycle electrical interference hum, and definitely not listenable. So I know the music is streaming and the AirPort is receiving, but I'm wondering if it's an electrical problem with the AirPort or output jack, or is there some software or hardware fit I can do myself. I've plugged in & out the cord, it works with an iPod, it's connected to a non-Phono jack of the stereo (AUX port), and I've reset the AirPort Express unit. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hello AOSmith. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
To rule out your stereo or audio cable, try substituting a pair of stereo headphones plugged directly into the AX's audio port. Do you still hear the hum? If so, then the problem is either with the AX itself or the power source is not properly shielded. Try connecting the AX to a known good power strip; one that has surge protection and/or noise cancelling capability would be ideal, and then, plug this into the outlet that you had the AXn connected to. Did this help? If not, then unfortunately, the problem may be with either the AX's audio and/or power circuit.

  • Airport Express only outputs sounds through left channel

Recently purchased a new airport express.
Sound is only audible through the left channel. Sound through the right channel is barely audible even at max volume (speakers and iTunes).
Speakers are fine (they work fine through the stereo, iPod earphones also only work through left channel).
If I turn sound enhance on and up to high, I can finally hear through the right channel, but only at about 40-50% of the left.
Is this a software issue, or bad hardware?
I've hard reset the airport express multiple times. Same issue whether wirelessly or connected via ethernet. This is running from iTunes 7 for Windows using a Linksys router.
      Windows XP Pro

Doesn't sound promising for the AX. Since it was
recently purchased, do you have the option to visit
your local Apple Store to either return it for
replacement or, at least, have them verify the
    problem?
The reason why I thought it might be software related was due to this effect of changing the sound enhancer, i.e by turning the sound enhancer on and setting it to high there was a considerable increase in sound output. If there was a loose connection somewhere I don't think I'd expect this behavior. It's almost as if the balance has been set all the way to the right.
Given that no-one seems to have seen this problem before (other than a unresolved single old post on the Airport Express board), it does seem that you're right and the AX needs replacing.

  • How to change channel on 5GHz on new (2012) Airport Express when connecting to en excsiting network?

Airport Express only provides channel 100 automatically when configuring it to connect to an excisting wireless network at 5GHz. This is out of range for most routers, which typicaly provieds channels 36 through 48 for connecting 5GHz devices.Only when you configure the Airport Express to establish a new wireless network it allows you to change channels manually. This is really weird. I have severeal Airport Express units (older model) around my house for streaming music, and they work just fine on 2.4 GHz, and so does the new (2012) one, but I bought it specifically to use 5GHz in a corner of my house with interference from surrounding 2.4 GHz networks, so I am really disappointed with this product. There should and must be a way to connect it to an excisting 5GHz network, but how to get the channel right in this cnfiguration mode?

When you extend wireless you cannot switch channels.. The Express is locked to the channel used by the Extreme.. there is no choice about this.
Reboot the extreme .. wait a minute and then reboot the express.. Channels will be tested on reboot to pick the best.. there is nothing much else you can do.

  • Case for 2012 airport express

I plan to use my airport express as a travel router.  Does anyone know if any manufacturers make a case/bag to carry it in ?

There's a bag designed for the Apple TV and related accessories that would work since it's nearly identical in size as the Airport Express. It's the SF Bags "Apple TV Case"
    http://www.sfbags.com/products/apple-tv-case/apple-tv-case.php
Otherwise, 3rd party bags for external hard drives and/or portable optical drives are options to investigate. Of course there may be a camera bag that is well suited, but the SF Bags case is the closest I've found to a dedicated bag intended for the Airport Express/Apple TV.

  • Is music streamed from an iMac to an Airport Express digital?

My Airport is connected to my stereo with the optical/digital connector, but is the music that is being streamed to the Express itself digital before it is streamed to the stereo via the Express?

Because you can stream music from the Express to the stereo digitally or analog dependent on which connectors you use. Since the music has to travel to the Express and then to the stereo, I just wondered if the stream from the computer was digital.

  • Using Airport Express to listen DVD via Front Row and Optical Out

I want to find out if this is possible:
I currently have Macbook Black Core 2 Duo. I enjoy watching DVDs using Front Row. The DVI video cable goes to the projector which is at the back of my room. Since the Macbook is close to the projector, I have to run optical audio cable to the 5.1 Dolby Digital home theater sound system at the front of my room.
I am interested in the AirPort Express because it can play iTunes wirelessly and use optical output to hook up the stereo system.
The question I want to know is if it's possible to connect Airport Express optical output into my Dobly Digital sound system so I can watch and listen DVD movies via Front Row? If not, any other alternatives? When searching through topics, it seems the users said Rogue Amoeba has a lag issue. Even I am not sure it can do optical output capabilites. Any thoughts. Thanks!

To stream non-iTunes music to the AirPort Express (AX) you need Airfoil.
