2012 Mac Pro / Mountain Lion won't boot with ATI 5770
2012 12 Core mac pro. I've got 2 GPUs installed:
- Quadro 4000 for mac
- ATI 5770
The Quadro is so loud and annoying that I'd like to unplug it for general use. Then plug it in for DaVinci or Premiere use.
Problem is when I unplug (power) from the Quadro and reboot, system gives me the Apple logo and then automatically restarts. Over and over. This is with Mountain Lion.
I tried booting to a drive with 10.6 and it booted up fine.
I keep searching for driver updates or something but everywhere says it's included in OSX?
Is this problem happening because there are 2 GPUs installed? Even though one is unplugged? Like PCI lane conflict or something?
Alex
I think you will need to remove it entirely, or plug the power back in. It does not seem to allow your Mac to work with a Bus connection, but no aux power.

this is a very frustrating problem
my iMessage on my macbook pro mountain lion won't work.
it keeps on saying that ive entered the wrong passcode.
i even have my firewall turned off
plz helpOk...
So I bought my MacBook Pro second hand, and it came with no installation discs, but I got Mountain Lion and had it installed and decided to back it up to a disc in case of this scenario. I followed some instructions to make a bootable disc and used it to install a fresh copy of Mountain Lion back when I first got it.
My problem is that without the boot partition of my MacBook's hard drive it doesn't seem to want to boot the disc.
Since I didn't want to buy a disc and I don't have another MacBook or know anyone near me that does, I decided to download a hackintosh iso and use it along with my other laptop to install iPC 10.5.6....this installed successfully and my hopes were that my MacBook would be able to boot it, so I reinstalled my MacBook's hard drive and to my surprise it booted, although not normally. Since it is hackintosh it has some rewritten boot features so it's not a true OSX, but it is fully functional. Since I finally had OSX booted I figured I was in the clear and would be able to install Mountain Lion from this, but then I found out that you have to have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or later in order to install Mountain Lion.
Now I'm stuck with a hactintosh version of Lion and still no way to get back to Mountain Lion, is there anything I can do now that I have a functional OSX installation? -
I cannot get my Mac Pro (Original) MacPro1,1 to boot with the 64 Bit kernel in 10.6.8 (this is a 2 x 3Dual-Core Intel Xeon machine).
Firmware = MP11.005C.B08 (EFI 1.2) 1.7f10 (SMC 1.1)
Will it not run the 64 bit kernel?
Is there a firmware upgrade to allow this?
Should I bother?
It won't boot with the Key 6 & 4 method.
or using Terminal command;
sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance...
EricBecause it can't and doesn't have a 64-bit supported firmware.
UEFI (EFI64) was not finalized and adopted until very late 2007 and introduced in 2008, by Apple, Intel, other members of EFI Group and Unified EFI. The Mac Pro Mid-2010 was the first time though that 64-bit mode was the default.
Does it matter? not really. you can't install 48GB RAM anyway, while there are some improvements from 64-bit kernal.
Also can't boot Windows 7 64-bit DVD to install properly. But you can run Windows 64-bit kernel because you have a 64-bit Xeon.

A couple of weeks ago i turned on my mac pro and it didn't boot!
The video card fan whirls around for about 5 seconds and clicks off.
After looking around this forum and others for a while i thought it might be a power supply issue. So i took the tower to my local Apple repairer to get fixed. I called a week later to find out what the deal was and was told that its not the power supply and they were still looking at it. A few days later i got a message saying that it had bad ram and was fixed. leaving me 2gig of ram down (i had 8 gig of ram leaving me with 6 gig) and $75 out of pocket.
No sweat!
About a week later it did it again! Not booting!
i push the power button a few times and it booted! Phew!
It did this for a couple more weeks. Not booting sometimes. A few pushes of the power button and away we go.
Until of course i had a recording session booked and the mac pro would not turn on at all!
I've taken all the ram out (8 1gig sticks) and just installed 2 gig at a time. Going through all of them. Even the one the repairers said was bad. With no luck. I've reset the SMC and take the battery out and put a multi meter over it and it seems fine. (I must say that one day the screen went all weird. Kind of like blurred checkers for a minute but came good again.) I tried to boot it up without the graphics card, no luck!
I'm not sure what i should do??
Take it back to the repairer for another $75 or buy some more ram and see what happens.
Is it possible that ALL the ram is stuffed?
Is it possible to boot up without the video card?
Any advice you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks heaps

Mountain lion won't boot on MB Pro
I have a mid year 2012 MacBook Pro, about 14 months old.
Last night it froze up and would not reboot. I went into recovery partition, and ran disk utility which gave me hundreds of errors
(Invalid record count, invalid node structure, missing thread record I'd=.... , missing thread record, invalid directory item count, invalid node structure, next/previous I'd in a hard link chain is incorrect, orphaned file node, orphaned file hard link) and the message, disk utility can't repair this disk back up as many files as possible, reformat disk, restore backed up files ...
So... Help!! What should I do next, how can I back up (I have another mb pro) ?
Should I get disk warrior? Genius Bar??
Thanks in advance.....It appears that the HDD will have to be replaced.
If you have Apple care, then Apple should do it for free. If not, you will have to do it and purchase a new one.
It would be best if you could attach a HDD in an enclosure and connect it to the MBP and transfer the data to the external one. Note that third party application should also be transferred.
You could use Target Disk Mode with the other MBP:
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10725
Note that this requires a Firewire cable.
You will need a new internal HDD. Any SATA 2.5" HDD drive will do. As a place to start, look at the options available at OWC:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Newegg is another vendor you might look at.
Consider a HDD with larger capacity than what you are replacing and one with a faster rotation. Also look at a hybrid SSHD for a bit more of a performance boost. This way you make the best of a bad situation.
The new HDD will have to be formatted and the OS will have to be installed using Internet Recovery;
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Then you will have to install your user data.

Mac Pro Mountain Lion Kernel Panic Dual Video Cards
I've been getting constant panics since upgrading to Mountain lion on my 2009 Mac Pro.
Worth noting is I have dual GT 120 Video Cards and dual 30" LCDs. Every panic seems to be caused by com.apple.NVDAResman
This computer has been rock solid since 2009 and only after "updating" to Mountain Lion has it become unstable.
Was hoping 10.8.1 and 10.8.2 would fix the issued, but neither have. It's worse than ever. Crashing every day.
Already reinstalled the OS, tested the RAM, etc. No change. Still crashes everyday.
What should I do? It's really eating into productivity...

Mountain Lion won't boot after restart (SSD problem?)
Hey, I just installed ML on my OCZ Octane SSD, everything went ok, finally the setup assistant requested reboot which is what I did. However, it got stuck while rebooting and now I can only see flashing question mark icon and ML won't boot at all. The only thing I can do is to boot up in safe mode. I guess that the problem is my SSD (indilinx controller) which ML can't handle (it ran on Lion just fine). Does anyone have the same experience? Any clue how to resolve this? Thank you.
I've confirmed with OCZ that there is a firmware issue with Mountain Lion and they are working on a fix as of July 31, 2012.
No word from them yet, other than the official statement.
I too had an issue with my Octane booting once after install, then never booting again. Had to to a TM restore, back on Lion till this is resolved. Kind of frustrating, but there must have been a low level system change that affected things.

27" iMac Mountain Lion won't boot (Black screen) after switching to bootcamp
Hi,
I've been running Windows 7 in Boot Camp on Mountain Lion on my 1 month old 27" iMac without any problems. Tonight after I switched the startup partition to be boot camp the machine won't boot. I get the startup sound and the disks spin up, but the system just sits there with a Black Screen. There is no disk activity other than them spinning up.
I've tried starting the machine while holding the option key and also command-r, but nothing is happening. I have the feeling that the bluetooth keyboard has not had the chance to connect to the system before it is hanging.
I tried inserting a Lion OS DVD, thinking that it would at least complain and give me an option to boot back in to Mountain Lion. You can hear the DVD spin up and then go idle.
Any suggestions on how I can recover the situation?
Thanks in advance
MickThe RAM mismatch might be the problem fix that.
Also backup/data recover naturally, assume TimeMacine or bootable clone is corrupted and backup only files to a storage drive
Most commonly used backup methods
Install OS X on a external drive and boot from it.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Use Disk Utility on the booted clone to Erase with middle selection (Zero) the ENTIRE internal hard drive
Use Carbon Copy Cloner to reverse clone the clone onto the internal, copies the Recovery HD too.
That should fix it, or else the drive or another hardware issue

Hello, I have a early 2008 Mac Pro and it won't boot even with SL DVD
My Mac Pro (3.0GHz quad core (dual CPUs) 8GB 667 RAM) won't boot. it gets to the grey screen/ Apple logo and hangs on the logo for a few seconds then flashes either the question mark folder icon or on the circle-slash icon () for about half a second then the logo for a few seconds and repeats. It will go into Target Disk Mode (T) but not Diagnostic Mode (D)
Here's what I have done to try to fix it:
unplugged all peripherals
tried to force DVD boot holding C (checked disc for errors on SL iMac)
removed all HDDs and rebooted holding C, plus a combination of having some in/ some out.
removed first DVD-ROM and used second drive
removed second DVD-ROM and used first drive
held shift during startup
held option during startup
removed graphics card
put HDDs back in with GFX card out, plus combinations
put only the boot drive HDD in (not time machine or 3rd HDD)
put blank HDD in and booted DVD
put mac formatted (used iMac to format) HDD in and booted with DVD
used an G4 USB keyboard again for all of the above
All of this has not worked so I am stuck with what to do. It was all working fine a couple of days ago. At the time it randomly shut down I was trying to use Boot Camp to create a Windows 7 area, but I made sure it was using the 3rd HDD I had put in the machine a couple of days before so it shouldn't be interfering with normal operations. I had also formatted it to NTFS earlier but reformatted it on the Mac Pro to Mac OS Extended - I don't know if this is even relevant.
Any suggestions (except taking it to a Apple repair centre as I can usually fix anything myself!)
Thanks.Go to System Profile and look, does it say "MacPro3,1"?
That is 2008.
FBDIMM would be 800MHz. Did you use older slower 667MHz in yours?
You can but take a hit in performance.
Sounds like MacPro1,1.
Mac Pro (3.0GHz quad core (dual CPUs) 8GB 667 RAM)
In 2007 March an 8-core 3GHz did come out 2,1.
So just to be clear.

It was all working fine a couple of days ago. At the time it randomly shut down I was trying to use Boot Camp to create a Windows 7 area,
Whenever you want to install Windows, remove all the drives other than the one Windows goes to. And if you use a dedicated drive YOU DO NOT NEED Boot Camp Assist, unless you use XP, which really is limited and crippled (one processor, 1.9GB RAM support).
And when it freezes, your only choice is to nuke (reformat) and restore or get out that backup CLONE you made before (ie, Step #1 in the Boot Camp Guide).
Sure that whole NTFS / MBR / GUID could be an issue, but you should just have a blank drive or clone.
No don't bother Apple, they seem to not have a good sense about Windows on Mac Pro anyway.
Other than zap pram from cold boot / tried booting with NO drives inside and just 10.6. DVD - should be fine.
You should be fine iwth Windows 7 DVD and one drive, or even XP.
Make sure you take your time and reconnect cards etc properly and any cables.
Booting from OS X DVDs may not work if there is a drive with a totally shot directory or partition table. Put them in FW case and turn on AFTER OS X is booted.
Why aren't people Cloning as a Backup Strategy

My Mac Pro 1,1 won't boot, problems with disk.
I am having problems booting my 2006 Mac Pro 1,1. I was using my computer just fine and then I shut the computer down. When I tried to restart it the computer booted the the Apple logo and the status whell began turning, and then a progress bar appears under that and begins to load. It loads about 1/10 of the way, dissappears and then the computer shuts off.
I booted the computer using Command + R and attempted to reinstall OSX Lion, but it would not allow me to select a drive to install too. They are all grayed out. From here I went into Disk Utility and attempted to Verify Disk Permissions. A laundry list of errors immediatly came up. Next step was the verify the disk, at which point the message read that the disk seamed to be corrupted and needed to be repaired. I tried to repair the disk but was then told that the disk couldn't be repaired, to recover any data and reformat the drive.
The problem with this is that I have not backed anything up (yes I know I am a TARD) but this is my situation and I need some help. At this point I would just like to recover the info that's on this disk, and without a computer to do this I'm not sure how to do this. At this moment I am attempting to make a disk image of the corrupted drive in hopes that this will allow me to restore it later.
Please somebody help. I bought this computer with a lot of pre-installed programs, (i.e Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Studio, etc.) not to mention all of my other files.I have an external drive that I used to keep files backup up on, again I'm a TARD, and no longer do. I've been messing around with the Recovery option when I boot and during this venture saw my main HD unmount and just would not do anything. After trying a few things I reset the system again and when I got back to recovery noticed that the drive had mounted again. I am now using disk utility to copy the entire contents of this main HD to the external drive. Est. time remaining is 12 hours. I did have the external filled up with some stuff but nothing I wasn't willing to trade for all of my applications (that came pre-installled when I bought the machine) and other files. I've read that even doing this isn't a fail proof way to solve the problem as their are still corrupted files, but Disk Utility said that my drive couldn't be repaired and to backup what I could and format the drive. I am hoping that backing up everything to this external drive will give me at least some oportunity to recover my apps, files etc. It also said that if disk utility couldn't fix the drive to boot from the CD and try it that way. Unfortunatly I downloaded Lion and don't have one. I just bought this HD about 2 years ago. Is a Seagate and I haven't had any problems from it. When my computer stopped working I had just been using it and just reset the computer. I am definitly going to get another drive but what are your thoughts on my ability to recover everything? I've heard there are some programs that can handle it.

Probably because this card "is not supported in FreeBSD," the building block for Mac OS X kernel...
The Serial ATAPI has to do with your Superdrive bus...
Not sure if the first issue is related to the second, or if both the network card is unsupported and the ATAPI device is connected improprerly...
I was just researching, I am no expert. But thanks for posting the log. Hope you get your computer working.

HARD DRIVE won't boot past APPLE ICON, grey spinning wheel on grey screen. Tried using install discs, no go past the icon.
Replace small battery inside? replace chips? Logic board replace as last resort. Can't take it away from work at this point to an apple tech.
Had just installed updates to snow leopard and was successful...but went to restart it...and this crap happened.
Thanks for any help.

< Edited by Host >I'll try that tomorrow. Thinking it could also be:
1) The PRAMM battery. found info on that they can wear out close to 5 years. This MAC PRO is close to that now. And I use a lot of power on it.
2) MAC PRO is plugged into a SURGE PROTECTOR, instead of right into the wall outlet.
3) Been doing a lot of FORCE QUITS and HARD BOOT -- unplugging it directly when it wouldn't shut down soon enough -- lately this past year.
I just assumed that this MAC PRO with the XEON QUAD CORE etc., was a heavy duty enough NLE,
that i wouldn't have these problems. It's not fully loaded with all the chips it can carry...and I don't have near enough external terabyte hard drives for storing video and audio files to edit. I've been storing wayyy too much
on the internal hard dives and just have to stop that.
I noticed these past few days that much of the LETTERING for hard drive icons and folders' titles
were starting to look in OVERLAPPING of the lettering. That was my first hint that something was up. -
Early 2008 Mac Pro - Mountain Lion Crashing
I have an Early 2008 Mac Pro. After upgrading from Lion I have been experiencing random crashes while using varoious applications (anything from more processor instensive applications like Adobe CS6 products or even just running Mail or Safari with little activity). It seems that many of the crashes happen while 'swiping' between screens, but not all crashes seem to be triggered that way. I'm inclined to think that these problems are from a software related issue because I wasn't experiencing any of these types of problems on Lion.
The crash sequence happens the same each time:
1. Monitor brightness subtly and briefly increases.
2. A gray screen appears for 2-4 seconds.
3. Then the screen returns to the desktop view, all the Apps have crashed (usually losing most recent data) and are then in the process of re-starting automatically.
4. No error logs ever appear for any of the Apps. In Lion, I was used to seeing the computer generate an error log, but these crashes do not make any error logs appear. I'm not sure if this is a product of ML or just the instance of this particular problem.
*Note - The system is responsive after the crash happens, and I never have to restart the computer.
I ran the 'Verify' hard drive test (found in Disk Utility) and my hard drive came up clean.
I also ran the Apple hardware test from the original install discs and that came up clean as well.
I'm trying to determine my next steps. Do I try a fresh install of ML on a new hard drive? Are there drivers that need to be updated on my current hard drive?
Please feel free to point me to threads that already address this issue. Thank you. Here's the Full .crash report:

Mac Pro 12-core won't boot Mac OS X 10.6 "Server" Install DVD
I have just received my new Mac Pro 12-core today.
I tried to boot from my Mac OS X Server (10.6) Install DVD with no success.
I WAS able to "upgrade" from the preinstalled Mac OS X 10.6.4, but I need a clean installation.
I first thought there was a problem with the internal DVD drive, but I could boot the provided Mac OS X Install DVD. I also tried to boot the "Server" DVD from a firewire external DVD drive, with no success. I even tried "target" mode, using the DVD drive from a Mac Book Pro, with no success.
The server install DVD is not corrupted, as I used it recently on my 2007 Mac Pro 8-core.
Please help.New hardware = newer minimum OS build

Mac Pro new update won't boot after 10.8.2 Update 1.0
It just stays on the apple screen during boot after entering pw for account.
Its been over 5 min that it just stays in that screen. Anyone else seeing this after doing 10.8.2 Supplemental Update 1.0?Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
