2012 Macbook pro 13" 2.9Ghz i7 ssd options

Hey everyone,
This is my first discussion!
So I owned 2010 mbp 13 inch base model but after failing few times
Apple has finally decided to replace my machine to a brand new 2012 machine
and I am so excited! Becauase of my budget I chose 2.9Ghz i7 750gb hd
and I only paid $300 out of my pocket for an upgrade!
So now I want to upgrade my HD to SSD and what are my options?
And what exact SSD model do I need (Like SATA ii/iii) I am so confused
I am thinking of getting between 128gb or 256(?)gb
1. Intel
2. Samsung
3. OWC
4. crucial
What are my best option on price range (below $280), speed, realibility, easy to install?
and I am thinking of getting HD enclosure for my 750HD, what are good enclosures out there?
Maybe thunderbolt or usb3.0 ?
Thanks a lot !

I'd still go ahead and recommend the Crucial M4, this SSD is cheaper and offers good performance.
Have a look at the link I've included and you'll see the performance of the Crucial is pretty good compared to the other SSDs out there.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4224584?start=0&tstart=0
You'll see that we did a speed test between the Crucial M4 and Kingston HyperX, although the KIngston HyperX is faster - the Crucial was faster in some areas.  For the price difference however, the Crucial M4 wins.
Good luck and hopefully this gives you an idea on which SSD to purchase.

  • 2012 Macbook Pro 13in 2.9GHz vs 2011 October 15in quad core refurb

This fall I will be a freshman at my college and I have decided that I am going to invest in a macbook pro. Right now I could buy 2012 13in with 8gb of ram for $1399 or I could purchase the refurb for $1359. My question is which one will benefit me more in the long run? Is 15in to bulky and heavy to take to college? If i chose the refurb would I be able to count on it for years to come? Will it last longer than the 2012 13in. If I got the 15in I would probably upgrade to 8gb of ram. I would be missing out on USB 3.0 if I chose the refurb though. Is this a deal breaker? I'm planning on getting into Economics and my college pretty much endorses Macs so that won't be a problem. Otherwise, I will probably just be doing normal things on my computer like watching videos, surfing the web, typing papers, downloading music and the occasional playing of flash games on the internet. I just want to make sure that I can get a computer that will last me at least 4 years and hopefully more. Any suggestions and thoughts would be very helpful!

I would go a different route.....
I would buy the the 15' Quad Core.
Regardless of which one you decide to purchase, they would last for years if proper care is used.
The 2.9GHz is a fast machine.  No doubt about that one.  It is however, in the end, only a dual core.
Let say you decide to do some number crunching, the dual core will run out of steam before the quad core does.
Or you decide to use photoshop, the dual core will do the job but the quad will do it efficiently because of it's quad core design, the processing is done by all four cores thus finishing faster.
And when it comes with your occasional games, the 15' has it's own discreet graphics to process the videos while the 13' has to rely on the processor to drive the built in intel video.  So the processor will be working harder on the 13' which will make your MB run a little on the hot side.

  • External monitor/display for a 2012 MacBook Pro?

I want to know if I can connect an Acer S201HL to a 2012 MacBook Pro i7 2.9GHz 8GB memory OSX10.8.1 - I will be using a magic mouse and apple wireless keyboard as well - if this setup will work what specific cables and adapters do I need to get? If at all possible I would consider running 2 displays. also running Parralells with Windows 7 Home Premium.

With athundebolt diplay there might be some info here that might help.

If you have a mini DVI port you would need a moni DVI to VGA adapter, and a VGA cable

  • Is it possible to upgrade from 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm to ssd on the new 13" 2012 macbook pro?

is it possible to upgrade from 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm to ssd on the new 13" 2012 macbook pro?

New non-retina 15" MBP, I just replaced the 500 gb HD with a Samsung 830 256 gb SSD from Amazon, $255 for the kit (includes a USB cable).  Wow.  What a difference.  Yes, there was a learning curve for some of it, but was so worth it.  Let me know if I can help.  I'm using the 500 gb in 2 partitions - one for a clone of the SSD, and one for Time Machine.

  • The optional ssd's of the 2012 MacBook Pro 15 are 6G?

the optional ssd's of the non retina 2012 MacBook Pro 15 are the same internally with those found in retina models? i mean 6g, based on the new samsung controller.

I do know that the Macbook Air is on a Toshiba 6G and the Macbook Retina is on a Samsung 6G.
But have a look at the link I provided for the MB Pro and see if the satisfies your curiosity.
    Cheers..

  • 2012 MacBook Pro freezing and shutting down randomly

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro (15.4" 2.6ghz i7 model) and I'm having some serious issues with the laptop freezing up completely and also randomly restarting. The freezes are hard freezes as well, not simple hangs, they require me to hold the power button down to restart Occasionally when it shuts itself down and attempts to restart it will give me the dreaded "3 beeps" indicating a hardware problem. Strangely, if I hold the power button down so that it shuts itself off entirely and let it sit for a minute it will always restart fine afterwards.
I have swapped out the RAM for new modules and the problem has persisted. It happens at various times as well, sometime in the middle of the night while its asleep, other times while I'm actively using it, there doesn't seem to be a pattern to when it happens. Likewise they occur regardless of any externals in use as well (I have a 23" external monitor that occasionally use via a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter as well as some USB 3 & 2 external HD's, USB 2.0 hub and a Firewire audio interface. The freezes seem to happen even if I'm using the laptop by itself without any peripherals plugged in.
To make my situation more complicated, I upgraded many of the componants of the laptop upon purchasing it, so I can't really be sure if I have a faulty HD since my only experience with it has been in it's current upgraded state. I have a 256GB SSD as my boot drive and I replaced my optical drive with a data doubler with a 750GB WD HD.
It is not currently under warrenty nor do I have Apple Care so I'd like to do as much legwork as I can to narrow down my issue- I have seen other threads where people have had thier logic boards replaced and the issues persisted- I don't quite have the $$ to spend on that sort of repair unless it truly is the root of my problems.
What can I do to further troubleshoot my setup? The freezes don't happen regularly but they are often enough to be a problem. I am also a musician and use my laptop for live performances so I need to make sure this doesn't happen during a show!
Thanks in advance for any assistance

Sounds like your iphone is causing kernal panics.
Unplug everything. Keyboards, mice, external hard drives, the lot.
One of these devices could be causing it.
Then, grab your Install DVD, and boot while holding the C button.
    Select your language.
Go to Utilities > Disk Utility > Repair Disk + Repair Permissions
Then restart, and every once in a while, add one of the keyboards/mice/iphones/hdd's one by one to see if they are causing issues & therefore identifying the culprit.

  • Can anyone give a list of upgradeable performance parts for a mid 2012 macbook pro 13"?

I have a non Retina display mid 2012 macbook pro that I want to do a home refurbishment and mass upgrade on, the processor and graphics cards are both good as is but RAM gets a bit bottlenecked with only 8gb, Id like to be able to replace the built in speakers and possibly upgrade the optical/super drive as well If thats not too large an Endeavor.
I'm mostly a comp work virgin, so I want to make sure what I want to do isn't too tricky

  • Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina 15' will not boot an external disk from a Mid-2012 MAcbook Pro. What should I do?

In order to simplify moving all my files from the previous mid-2012 macbook pro 15' when moving to my new late-2013 macbook pro, i superdup-ed the full hard-disk to an external ssd. Unfortunatelly the new mac resuses to boot from this external disk (i get the grey disk with a line over it). The external disk works just fine so if I boot the new mac from its internal SSD I can read/write the external disk without problems.
Old OS X is 10.9 as is the OS on the new mac.
What I need to do is to boot the new mac from the external ssd, use the same superduper to copy the external content onto the internal ssd.
How can I solve this issue?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you made a backup of your files with SuperDuper, use Migration Assistant (in /Applications/Utilities) to transfer your files from the external drive > http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html It will create a new user account with the transferred files, so you may want to merge both user accounts > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5472
The Late 2013 MacBook Pro uses a special OS X Mavericks version which makes OS X compatible with it, and older OS X versions do not work with it. That's the reason why you cannot start up from the external drive created from the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro

  • 2012 MacBook Pro 15" Data Doubler Boot Camp

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro 15" and I have installed a data doubler. I am wanting to bootcamp. I have my Mac OS Startup on my 120GB SSD and the data doubler is a 500GB HD can I put Windows on the Hardrive and leave the OS on the SSD?

    Start up in Safe Mode

  • Fusion drive + Bootcamp on mid 2012 MacBook Pro 15"

    Dear all,
I am in a sort of delimma now, as I am trying to set up a Fusion Drive with a Bootcamp partition on my 2012 MacBook Pro 15" with a Hitachi 750G HDD and a Crucial Micron M4 256G SSD. Here are the challenges I read up from other threads or personally encountered:
    1) The Bootcamp partition would only boot when the drive is in the disk0 partition, meaninig I it will boot when the HDD is in the original HDD slot or when it's in the Optibay with the SSD disconnected. It, however, won't boot when it is in the Optibay with the SSD in the original HDD slot connected.
    2) The SATA connector in the Optibay is rated for 6G data rate, but there has been reports of spotty performances when it tries to negotaite the 6G data rate of SATA-III devices.
So as of now I am at a delimma of either to put the SSD in the HDD slot and forefeit the dual-boot setup, or to put the SSD in optibay and put up with the occasional beachball. Has anyone been able work out something aronud this problem?
p.s. I read somewhere that the poor performance of SSD in Optibay had to do with inteference in the cable, so I had the birlliant idea of shielding the optibay enclosure and the cable with aluminum foil - so far it does not seem to have an effect.

For the record, I finally got close to solving it after endless trials and errors.
With a setup of SSD in hard drive bay and HDD in optibay, I made a portition for Windows in the SSD, and then used the methods available online to merge the other partition on the SSD and the HDD into one fusion drive. The windows installation works, and the bootcamp was able to boot properly. Now I am posting this follow-up on the cloned system living on an external drive which was created using Carbon Copy Cloner and cloning the system back at the some time, all the while crossing my fingers that it will finally work this time.
Updates should be coming pretty soon.

There are a couple of things you should look at.
Macs are very selective when it comes to RAM.  Install the original RAM and see if there is any change.
    Second, look at these items:
One or more of them may be the source of your issues.
    Ciao.

  • 2012 Macbook pro restarts unexpectedly

My 2012 Macbook Pro with Retina restarts unexpectedly. It might go a day or two without doing it, but then it might continually restart 5 times in an hour.  My computer screen will suddenly go black. The computer sounds like it's still running, but it wouldn't respond.  I have to hold the power button down till the computer totally shuts down, then it takes awhile to get it turn back on and it always says "your computer restarted because it has encounter a problem" or something to that effect.  and then the screen usually turns black again and i have to repeat the restart process until I can log back on.  Then I get the error report message copied below.  I would take it to an Apple store, but the closest one is 4 hours away and I don't get to the city very much.  Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.

MacBook Pro Repair Extension Program for Video Issues

  • 2012 macbook pro retina display

i am looking to buy a 2012 macbook pro retina display 13.3" core i5, 8gb ram and 126gb ssd however,  have heard that the 2012 macbook retina display models have problems with them, like screen issues, over heating issues, wifi connection issues etc. can anybody cnonfirm these problems are quite common? and if so are there any solutions ot them

    Hi alex,
Mostly what we see here are posts from people with problem MBPs, so it seems like a lot, when in reality, it's usually only a small percentage of all those units sold. That said, it does seem like the r models have more than their share of issues, but if it was a majority of them, it would be the first time.
If you get it new, there's a 14 day return policy, 90 days of phone support, and a one year warranty.

  • How to get install disk for lion on 2012 macbook pro

How do i get a reinstall disk for drivers and lion as well as ilife so i can install a new ssd drive in my computer

As Niel said, you have to install OS X through OS X Recovery. Respecting to iLife, if your Mac came with DVDs, you should have it on the Applications DVD that came with the Mac, and if it didn't come with DVDs, open App Store > Purchases, and install iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand.
Then, if you want, you can download OS X from the App Store instead of using Recovery, so you can burn the installer onto a DVD or USB drive with Lion Diskmaker, so you won't have to redownload OS X each time you want to reinstall. As you have a Mid 2012 MacBook Pro, it will only work if it came with OS X Lion and you upgraded to Mountain Lion

  • 2012 MacBook Pro 9,1 Screen Blanking?

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro, Model 9,1. I'm having problems with intermitent blanking of my external monitors. So far, I've been unable to reproduce the symptons on demand. The screen blanking will last approximately 5-10 seconds and will occur from two to six times per day, usually in the middle of me doing something. When the displays recover most of the open windows will have shifted several inches to the left or right.
My setup is a bit unique. I'm using a Matrox DualHead2Go ME, plugged in to the Thunderbolt port on my MacBook Pro. The Matrox device drives two LG Flatron IPS235 monitors, which are connected via two 10' DVI cables. At first, I thought it was a cabling issue so I replaced my cheap DVI cables with two Monoprice cables with ferrites. This solved one of the problems I was having with random pixelation on my right monitor, but the blanking issue remains. Iread that switching off Automatic Graphics Switching in the Energy Control Panel may resolve the issue, but it didn't.
I'm currently running Mac OS X 10.8.3. Aside from having the DualHead2Go replaced, which Matrox claims isn't the problem, I don't know what else to try. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a Late 2011 MBP (MacBook Pro 8,3).  I did replace the stock 5400RPM drive with a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB drive.  The new drive does negotiate a 6.0Gbps connection, and the optical drive in my system still only negotiates a 1.5Gbps connection.
I have heard reports of people taking their optical drive out and putting the Momentus XT drive in an adaptor in that slot, in combination with an SSD drive in the primary drive location.  Both drives will negotiate a 6.0 Gbps connection, and you can get some searious throughput.  Rumors are that if you are willing to do this, you might even be able to get your Mac to believe it has one of those new "Fusion Drives" you can get from Apple...
