2012 MacBook pro 13" freeze at startup with Yosemite

After restarting yesterday, my computer freezes after loading about one fourth of the way down the bar. Tried a few things including booting into safe mode, single user mode and resetting PRAM/SMC, but nothing has worked so far. Any help/suggestions are much appreciated!

Hi Mhockey88,
It sounds like you have been on the right track in troubleshooting this issue. If you you continue to be unable to boot past this grey screen, you may find the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article helpful:

  • My 2011 early MBP pro 15 freezes at startup with distorted image

My 2011 early MBP pro 15 freezes at startup with distorted image, and sometimes its blank screen, I have also noticed that the machine heats up quickly at the same time.
I got this problem few weeks ago when it is running windows 7 in vitual machine. Firstly I used a software to disable the discrete graphic card and it backed to work for 2 weeks until the OS got an update (might be a firmware update since it required restart). Now it stops working completely.
I have try two hard drive (I have put in a SSD few months ago) and run the command line disk check on both of them, nothing wrong.
I tried to run disk utility/time machine at start-up, distorted screen or just blank
I tried to reinstall rams, did not work.
    Any other possible solutions?

  • Mid 2012 macbook pro glitching, freezing, overheating

Starting a few weeks ago, I noticed a change in my mid 2012 macbook pro. My laptop was losing charge EXTREMELY quickly, I would charge the laptop to 100%, and just an hour later (after not using it, but the lid closed and it was sleeping) it would be up to 60% charge, then when not in sleep and on, it would lose energy extremely quickly. I always make sure that unecessary background apps are not running--so that was not the problem. This problem went away after a week, but it was the first signal that something was wrong with my laptop.
Next, the laptop was having problems with waking up from sleep, I did an SMC reset and this problem was fixed.
After that, the laptop started glitching (static and banded lines on the bottom of the screen) and making this clicking noise when I was streaming video fullscreen on Netflix. I thought at first, that this was a problem with Silverlight, and reinstalled the silverlight plugin (several times). Then I noticed that the computer would glitch when I was streaming full screen on Netflix and picked up the laptop (moved it from a flat surface). This signaled to me that the problem was perhaps not software, but a hardware issue. I verified the disk and did a permissions report and neither were curative.
Further support that the problems are with hardware rather than hardware came to me when my computer presented itself with a fourth issue: the laptop, when being lifted or moved from a static surface, would sometimes freeze entirely and make the same clicking noise. This problem was not during fullscreen streaming, but had spread to when I was simply using more than one app at the same time (e.g. having Chrome and Word open together). When this happenend, the only solution would be to power down the computer and restart.
Finally, while sleeping with the lid closed in my backpack, I hear a whirring noise--I pick up the laptop and it was hot to the touch, overheating with the fans running on high speed.
I have no clue what is going on. I have taken the computer to my university's mac shop and they have suggested it is a logic board issue and I should give the computer in. I have scoured the forum for an answer of what is happening and am determined to find one. So I pose the problem to you--any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • My 15" 2012 macbook Pro keeps freezing. How do I amend this issue?

It's always while I'm browsing the internet in Chrome, usually when music is being played through the browser, on youtube for instance (though I don't know if that's relevant or not). The whole screen just freezes and the sound stutters. I'm always forced to restart the computer in order to solve the problem. I've pasted the crash report below for reference, does anybody have any suggestions?

I just experienced a similar issue with my 15-inch, Mid 2012 MacBook Pro. I was also using Google Chrome at the time. I was closing a few browser tabs (3-5 tabs, nothing absurd).
The cursor disappeared and the machine became unresponsive. The screen froze without the typical kernel panic backtrace appearing. I let it sit for a few minutes and the clock did not update. I forced it to shut down by holding power button down for 5 seconds. Upon reboot I got the following crash log. This log lead me to your post.

  • My macbook pro keeps freezing on startup

    hello,
whenever i sart up my macbook pro up its freezes and i have to hold the on off button to knock it off, itseems to work in safe boot mode , but not normal! anyone have a clue what to do?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes   after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract—not at the end.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entirecontents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Macbook pro very slow at startup, with often "repair disk" demand

I have a mid2009 15'' macbook pro. I have an issue of it being veery slow and some times non-responsive for no reason. It also takes a considerable extended time to startup.
I use only 35-40% of the HD, i have the least posible apps opening at startup, i keep desktop clean etc.
Another thing that is strange is that very often when i perform VERIFY DISK, most times it sais i need to repair from partition (can happen even every day or two)
Is my disk failing? Is there any way to test it?
Note: My optical drive is not working any more (like the drive of every mac owner after 2-3 years ) so i cant use the Hardware Test Cd.Is there any other way?

    Use an external drive.

  • MacBook Pro (2011) 13" keeps crashing with Yosemite 10.10.2

My MacBook Pro8,1 (early 2011) "Core i7" 13" started crashing after I upgraded and installed the free Yosemite 10.10.2 from Apple.  Has anyone else with a similar model MacBook Pro laptop experienced this problem in general?  Problems with Yosemite started soon after the upgrade install... the startup would get to full boot up after several restarts then crash after a time.  At first I thought it was a conflict with other applications.  Then after days of trouble shooting and even changing to a new Samsung EVO 250 SSD the problem still recurred repeatedly.  I have re-installed the original install CD numerous times checking disk utility, partitions, etc. and got Snow Leopard 10.6.6 installed OK.  Then I would update all that I could clicking updates on the Apple menu icon up till OS 10.6.8 and some other applications.  Up till that things seemed to be OK.  As soon as I downloaded Yosemite OS 10.10.2 and installed it...then all the crashing problems began.  I could get into safe install every now again then restart only to get in a startup crash loop.  I've repeatedly check my new SSD with disk utility and volumes are OK.  I've run virus checks with no infection.  I've run a hardware test (provided on one of the original CDs) with only good result.  So I'm really baffled when my understanding is MacBook Pro of my vintage can accept OS 10.10.x as it doesn't appear to be OK on my laptop.  Perhaps it clashes with my virus checker (MacKeeper) or some other application.  Can anyone shed light on this problem or have a similar problem?

You probably have some software that you keep installing that is not compatible with Yosemite. The first thing you need to do is remove MacKeeper, which is a scam. See:
    Ongoing MacKeeper fraud
Beyond that, it's impossible to say what might be causing the problem without more information. I would suggest downloading EtreCheck:
    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
Run it and post the report that it generates here.
(Fair disclosure: I may receive compensation from links to my sites, TheSafeMac.com and AdwareMedic.com.)

Same Problem as so many of us...

  • Macbook air 2013 freezing at startup after yosemite update

My 2013 Mb air has started freezing at startup. performing a safe reboot seemed to help, but once I restarted immediately after rebooting it froze again. A second try apears to have done the trick, however, now my volume is completely off and non-responsive, and Safari is not really working. This is one day after updating to Yosemite.

same for my MBA 2013 model...its taking very long to show me the password box after clicking the username.....it happens everytime i restart...once it starts, everything is fine...if i had to force restart it (it froze couple of times), it takes really long to reboot...and again login is a big deal...any ideas/tips ???

  • Anyone with the same problem? My macbook pro is freezing on start up and I get the follin

My macbook pro is freezing on startup lately! It is wierd because I think the computer is still working, I can turn the volume up and down, and change the light in the keyboard and so on... But it still doesnt work.. I took a photo with my iphone? My macbook is kindda old I think it is from 2007. 2,4 ghz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 2gb mhz DDR2 SDRAM
I have installed version 10.6.8 on it..
    Hope someone can help!

Did you ever figure this out?  I'm having the same problem now... I have a 2008 macbook pro, running mountain lino and it's been doing this.. I tried booking in safe mode and got the same result.  Single-user mode didn't even run, and it just kept starting and shutting down without the screen turning on.  Really weird.
Anyways, if you found a solution I'd appreciate it if you could let me know.  Thanks

  • 2012 Macbook Pro won't boot from CD and freezes in single user mode

I'm rebuilding a macbook pro. Everyting was fine until I tried to install Snow Leopard from the disk. It goes to the Apple symbol no spinning wheel and you can hear the drive working for a few seconds but then stops. I've also tried booting to sinlge user mode but it just freezes after Loading System\Library\Caches\com.apple.kext.cahces\Startup\Extensions.
I've tried resetting the PRAM as well.

If you have a 2012 MacBook Pro, you can't install Snow Leopard because it's not compatible, so it's normal that you can't start OS X.
Now, you have to install OS X Lion or Mountain Lion again. Hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery, and reinstall OS X. After reinstalling OS X, you will be able to use your computer.
You can't run an older OS X version than the one that came with your computer, because of some reasons:
    1. The hardware isn't compatible.
    2. The firmware restricts the installation of older versions on the computer.
    3. It's illegal: Apple doesn't allow you to install an older OS X version than the one that came with your computer, and it doesn't mind the method you use (a "normal" installation or a virtual machine)

  • 2012 MacBook Pro freezing and shutting down randomly

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro (15.4" 2.6ghz i7 model) and I'm having some serious issues with the laptop freezing up completely and also randomly restarting. The freezes are hard freezes as well, not simple hangs, they require me to hold the power button down to restart Occasionally when it shuts itself down and attempts to restart it will give me the dreaded "3 beeps" indicating a hardware problem. Strangely, if I hold the power button down so that it shuts itself off entirely and let it sit for a minute it will always restart fine afterwards.
I have swapped out the RAM for new modules and the problem has persisted. It happens at various times as well, sometime in the middle of the night while its asleep, other times while I'm actively using it, there doesn't seem to be a pattern to when it happens. Likewise they occur regardless of any externals in use as well (I have a 23" external monitor that occasionally use via a Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter as well as some USB 3 & 2 external HD's, USB 2.0 hub and a Firewire audio interface. The freezes seem to happen even if I'm using the laptop by itself without any peripherals plugged in.
To make my situation more complicated, I upgraded many of the componants of the laptop upon purchasing it, so I can't really be sure if I have a faulty HD since my only experience with it has been in it's current upgraded state. I have a 256GB SSD as my boot drive and I replaced my optical drive with a data doubler with a 750GB WD HD.
It is not currently under warrenty nor do I have Apple Care so I'd like to do as much legwork as I can to narrow down my issue- I have seen other threads where people have had thier logic boards replaced and the issues persisted- I don't quite have the $$ to spend on that sort of repair unless it truly is the root of my problems.
What can I do to further troubleshoot my setup? The freezes don't happen regularly but they are often enough to be a problem. I am also a musician and use my laptop for live performances so I need to make sure this doesn't happen during a show!
Thanks in advance for any assistance

Sounds like your iphone is causing kernal panics.
Unplug everything. Keyboards, mice, external hard drives, the lot.
One of these devices could be causing it.
Then, grab your Install DVD, and boot while holding the C button.
    Select your language.
Go to Utilities > Disk Utility > Repair Disk + Repair Permissions
Then restart, and every once in a while, add one of the keyboards/mice/iphones/hdd's one by one to see if they are causing issues & therefore identifying the culprit.

  • I have a 2012 Macbook Pro and the GPU is causing issues with Yosemite. How can I resolve this issue?

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro and the GPU is causing issues with Yosemite. There are a number of issues I have run across:
If I have four tabs open on Safari then I start to get a flickering on the screen from the GPU refreshing
When I leave the computer alone for more than 20 mins the screen saver should start -- what happens is that the screen goes to black. When I move the cursor I do not get the login screen. I have to reboot
FireFox Web browser will not run
I get issues with the computer running very slowly
I have already turned off the transparency option in settings. Any ideas??
    Cheers
    Matt

Do you have more than one OS on the Mac?
You may want to look at something like http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/. This has a Free Trial window, but it is a commercial application. If there are any heat/sensor issues, this may help.
A SMC Reset or PRAM/NVRAM reset may also help.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: You copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual. If it only boots in safe mode, use that.
Below are instructions to enter a UNIX shell command. It does nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to think carefully before running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The command will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but it's really a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
If you have more than one user, and the one with the problem is not an administrator, please run the command both as that user and as an administrator. The results may be different. The administrator is the user that was created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. If you can't log in as an administrator, just run the command as the user who has the problem. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter your password, the command will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important.
The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer.
Wait for the word "Done" to appear on a line by itself below what you pasted.
The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V again. Please don't copy anything from the Terminal window.
    You can then quit Terminal.
In case of difficulty, please note:
☞ This procedure is all copy-and-paste — type only your login password when prompted. When typing it, make sure caps lock is off.
☞ When you type your password, you won't see what you're typing.
☞ The commands don't change anything, and merely running them will do neither good nor harm.
☞ Remember to post the output. It's already in the Clipboard after you see the word "Done" in the Terminal window. You don't have to copy it. Just paste into a reply.
☞ If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
☞ Don't post what you see in the Terminal window. The output is copied automatically to the Clipboard.

  • How to use my earpods with my 2012 macbook pro

I can not get the inline microphone to work on my earpods with my 2012 macbook pro.  It will not reconize it.  Help please!

I have an A1286(Early 2011) MBP with OS X 10.8.2. Using my headphone jack with earpods has been sporadic. Sometimes I get the mic, sometimes I don't. I just now took a paper clip and worked it around inside the jack. I plugged my headphones back in appears to be working. Could be something inside the jack is bent and not making contact with the mic part of the plug.
Your mileage may vary. I assume no liability if you damage something.
Tried it again and it doesn't seem to be working anymore. For my MBP I think it is a hardware issue. Either dust or something is getting in between the contacts and the plug or the contacts are just not touching the plug. I'm gonna take a crack at dismantling my MBP and see if it's something simple like bending the contacts so they touch the headphone plug.
