2012 MacBook Pro 15" retina [USB 3.0 Issue]

Hello all, I am having an issue with my new laptop, please read!
I've purchased Macbook pro retina few days back, and I can't connect my 3.0 USB ext hdd
I have tried formatting with my other Mac computer, under every possible system type(?) such as "NTFS, exFat, Mac journals".
But still, nothing shows up on my retina mac... By the way, it reads 2.0 USBs so I don't think there's a problem with USB port.
Anyone else having same issue?

I would review this page from Apple:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5172?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US#5
One thing that stands out (to me) is:
What USB 3 devices are supported?
All devices that conform to what is commonly referred to as the "2008 version 1 USB 3.0 specification" are supported.
The other idea is to make sure:
1) the device is powered from its' own power supply if one was supplied. and
2) the device is connected and powered WHEN THE MBP is rebooted

Goodness.......why can't Apple do things right anymore.  Oh I forgot they sell iPhones instead of computers.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • I have a 2012 Macbook Pro and the GPU is causing issues with Yosemite. How can I resolve this issue?

I have a 2012 Macbook Pro and the GPU is causing issues with Yosemite. There are a number of issues I have run across:
If I have four tabs open on Safari then I start to get a flickering on the screen from the GPU refreshing
When I leave the computer alone for more than 20 mins the screen saver should start -- what happens is that the screen goes to black. When I move the cursor I do not get the login screen. I have to reboot
FireFox Web browser will not run
I get issues with the computer running very slowly
I have already turned off the transparency option in settings. Any ideas??
    Cheers

Do you have more than one OS on the Mac?
You may want to look at something like http://bjango.com/mac/istatmenus/. This has a Free Trial window, but it is a commercial application. If there are any heat/sensor issues, this may help.
A SMC Reset or PRAM/NVRAM reset may also help.

  • Standby Mode - Does it work on Late 2012 MacBook Pro (non-Retina)

I have read many articles today and I remain a little confused.  I have seen the Apple discussion at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4392 regarding "Standby Mode", but I appear to have limited progress.
Can the community verify if "Standby Mode" (controlled by pmset) be used on a late 2012 MacBook Pro.  This is a model without the Retina display, however, when I do pmset -g... I do see standby in the display (as seen below) which implies it should be active.
When I look at pmset -g I do see the standby line item, but if I set to "1", the unit still appears to not want to enter true hibernation.  I have hibernationmode set to 3 so that true hibernation only enables after the standbydelay period that is defined.  Obviously, if I set hibernationmode to 25, a true hibernate starts immediately, but I don't really want that, I am looking for the delay function that standby enables.
I have reset the SMC and currently have the following pmset conditions (modified for testing)
    Battery Power:
    lidwake              1
    autopoweroff         1
    autopoweroffdelay    14400
    standbydelay         60
    standby              1

Also, an auxilary question.  Can anyone explain the autopoweroff and autopoweroffdelay settings?  They appear to undocumented in manpages and can not locate any info on the web.

    Thanks for the input Michael.
The thing that started this, is the new Late 2012 MacBook Pro simply uses much more power in "sleep" mode than what I experienced on my old Late 2007 White MacBook.  Every night, the "sleep" mode would result in almost a drain of the battery and the result is that I was unneccessary cycling the battery. With no OS revisions to address this, I have changed the defaults to enable hibernate for both the charging and battery mode.
The strange thing about this is that even to get a true hibernation in battery mode I have to unplug all USB devices or the device will not hybernate.  Again, never had to do this on the old White MacBook and the power usage at night was very small.
This works for now, but I think a device should sleep with very little (less than 4%) power loss when power is disabled.
Thanks again for the input.  Here are the current settings.
    Battery Power:
    lidwake              1
    autopoweroff         1

  • Battery of 2012 MacBook Pro (non-Retina)

I have heard that the MacBook Pro with Retina has its battery glued into place, rendering the user unable to replace it themselves. Is this also true of the 2012 refreshed MacBook Pro that doesn't have retina?

The non-retina MBP batteries are not glued in.  They are held in place mechanically.

  • New 2012 Macbook pro 15" Retina low FPS

    HI,
I bought a top of the range Macbook pro 15" Retina(like 2 weeks ago), 2.6 i7, 512 SSD, 8GB 1600 RAM, nVidia GT 650M 1GB. I am tying to run battlefield 3 on bootcamp (windows 7 Utl x64) and i struggle to get above 12 FPS even on low graphic settings. If i drop the resolution i get maybe 1 or 2 extra FPS. I have run 3DMark11 and some test the FPS drop to as low as 2. I have updated the driver to the latest and even tried using an older driver with no luck. I upgraded from a mid 2011 MacBook pro 17" and did not have this. So i don't understand what is going on. Any ideas or suggestions on whether to go get the hardware checked would be really appreciated. I doubt its a hardware issue. But who knows?
    regards

Resolved. A friend of mine found this post: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1451750
turns out the SMC controller needed to be reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC."
after that im getting 25 - 35 FPS on pretty high resolution. on max resolution i only get 20 -25

  • MacBook Pro with Retina Display Rosetta Stone Issues

I just tried to install Rosetta Stone on my 15" MacBook Pro with Retina display.  It turns out that Rosetta Stone does not work with even the poorest display quality on a Retina Display.  It needs a 1024x768 display max.  Any suggestions?

  • Macbook pro w/ retina display battery life issues !

*** ! Battery life of my MacBook Pro is dropping ! it dropped 1-2 hours after upgrading to OS X Mountain Lion !

There are multiple sides to the answer to your question.
If the battery goes out while under warranty, Apple will fix it.
If the battery goes out after the warranty, Apple has already announced the price of the replacement. You can also check this page for more details about what is involved with servicing the batteries. For example, this page says if you can take the laptop to an Apple Retail Store you should expect a same day repair.
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro/service/battery/
Now the last part of the answer. Remember that the battery cycle life of the built-in batteries is much higher than for removable batteries. That's a big reason they chose to build them in, freeing up space and weight for more battery by eliminating removable-bay hardware. This means, if on the old laptops you used to replace your battery because it would run down, there is a possibility the higher-capacity built-in battery might still hold a decent charge by the time you decide that you want a newer model anyway. Meaning you might not have to replace the battery.

  • Can i use multiple dvi monitors on the 2012 macbook pro (non-retina)?

What is the best way to connect two Dell DVI monitors I already have with my new 15" MBP (non-retina)?

You could purchase 2 mini displayport to DVI adapters ($30 ea) and use the 2 Thunderbolt ports. I have one external DVI monitor connected to 1 of my Thunderbolt ports. Works great!
Sorry my mistake. You said non-Retina.

  • Mid 2012 MacBook Pro w/ Retina Making Popping Noises

When my MacBook is opening up to 15 tabs in Firefox or anything intensive I hear popping noises coming from my computer. I held down the D key at startup and am doing the full testing as suggested and am hearing the popping noises there to. What should I do? Thanks, Jeff

Make sure your Airport card is turned off. There have been a lot of people reporting problems with pops and clicks after the latest Airport card update, and turning the card off seems to alleviate the problem.

Windows 8.1 is compatible with the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro with Retina display, and you shouldn't have any problem by installing it.
To install Windows, follow these steps > http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf Remember to download the Windows support software, as indicated in the how-to

  • Why does my mid 2012 MacBook Pro Retina latptop shut down during software installation/updates?

Whenever I attempt to update preexisting software apps or install new ones, my mid 2012 MacBook Pro w/ Retina display will shut down and reboot itself. Obviously this has gotten frustrating as several of my existing apps are woefully out of date.
Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Thanks for the assistance and sorry for the late reply, I'm overseas doing HA work and don't always have internet access.
I tried utilizing the methods you mentioned and upon doing so I received the following message:
So I followed this set of instructions and when verifying and repairing disk permissions the window stated that the partition was okay.
After logging back in, I attempted to download a software update, sadly the system shut itself down and rebooted and I am still unable to install any updates for my out of date apps. I won't return to the States until June, I may have to wait until then to resolve this issue.
Thank you again for your assistance.

  • 2012 Macbook pro restarts unexpectedly

My 2012 Macbook Pro with Retina restarts unexpectedly. It might go a day or two without doing it, but then it might continually restart 5 times in an hour.  My computer screen will suddenly go black. The computer sounds like it's still running, but it wouldn't respond.  I have to hold the power button down till the computer totally shuts down, then it takes awhile to get it turn back on and it always says "your computer restarted because it has encounter a problem" or something to that effect.  and then the screen usually turns black again and i have to repeat the restart process until I can log back on.  Then I get the error report message copied below.  I would take it to an Apple store, but the closest one is 4 hours away and I don't get to the city very much.  Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.
