2012 Macbook Pro Retina Cooling Fan Question?

Ok I was running Skype, Traktor Scratch Pro, Chrome, iTunes, and Photoshop and I opened Garageband and my Macbook Pro's fan started running really loud, to the point where I could hear it over the speakers. I have nothing to complain about because this Mac does these thing 24/7 very, very well. If I tried to do all that on my former Microsoft PC, it would've bluescreened. I was just wondering why it did that because it only does it very rarely and I was wondering if it is normal.

Were you monitoring the temperatures? If you closed out programs and the fans slowed back down, then that sounds like normal operation. The fans run faster to prevent the processors from overheating.
Alternatively, it's possible that one of the programs you had running is malfunctioning and causing excessive processor usage.

  • 2012 Macbook Pro Retina High Temperatures

I recently started noticing my 2012 Macbook Pro Retina was feeling warm to the touch on my legs. I installed temperature gauge and was startled by the temperatures I saw.
Idling the CPU is around 40-45 C but spikes easily to 70-80 with any activity. As an example when Intellij compiles my java code my CPU will jump to 80C
The SSD temperatures is constantly at 65C.
I tried reseting the NVRAM with the instructions from Apple website. It didn't make any differences.
What is even more concerning is the fan speed does not change! It stays right around 2000 RPM no matter what the temperature is.
Has anyone else had similar experiences with their 2012 Retina? I recently had it at the Apple Store for repair to replace my screen, ghosting issues.

    Hi there,
You may find the information in the article below helpful.
    Mac notebooks: Operating temperature
Mac notebooks comply with temperature limits set in national and international safety standards when used in accordance with the instructions in the user guide.
While there are third-party utilities that measure the temperature of a notebook computer, it is important to understand that these utilities are not measuring the external case temperature. The actual case temperature is much lower. Never use third-party applications to diagnose possible hardware issues—instead, contact Apple or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

  • Freed memory not available 2012 MacBook Pro Retina

I have a 500 GB flash storage drive on my 2012 MacBook Pro Retina. In a bid to run things faster for my music production, I've moved my large ITunes library onto an external hard drive. I backed everything up and trashed the iTunes folder after the external was all working, repaired disk permissions and restarted but my freed memory is still not showing. Anyone have any advice? Thanks!

Download from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free) and open it.  It will show all of your files and the respective sizes.  See if this will assist you ion detecting the problem.

  • 2012 macbook pro retina display artifacts on screen when using onboard video

2012 Macbook Pro Retina Display artifacts on screen when using onboard video.
About a month ago I've noticed these strange artifacts (blocky pixelated looking) running vertically down the screen. It first started when using Safari. Then it started to happen all the time. I turned off the auto switch video in preferences, which I'm assuming forces the computer to use the separate video card and the artifacts go away.
On top of that issue I also have had the ghosting issue.
    Anyone else have this problem?

artifacts onscreen could mean a faulty gpu. You said by forcing it on inbuilt gpu you do not find this issue highlights that. Do take it in to apple for service and also tell them of your ghosting issue.
There are a few retina owners who have faulty gpus.

i am looking to buy a 2012 macbook pro retina display 13.3" core i5, 8gb ram and 126gb ssd however,  have heard that the 2012 macbook retina display models have problems with them, like screen issues, over heating issues, wifi connection issues etc. can anybody cnonfirm these problems are quite common? and if so are there any solutions ot them

    Hi alex,
Mostly what we see here are posts from people with problem MBPs, so it seems like a lot, when in reality, it's usually only a small percentage of all those units sold. That said, it does seem like the r models have more than their share of issues, but if it was a majority of them, it would be the first time.
If you get it new, there's a 14 day return policy, 90 days of phone support, and a one year warranty.

If you are still under warranty and/or have AppleCare, call them.  Let them deal w/it.

  • Macbook pro retina 15" fan gaming question

    Hi everybody,
I plain to buy a macbook pro retina 15" but i would like to get feedbacks from users who also plays with it.
Anyone here got this laptop and world of warcraft, diablo 3 or starcraft 2 under osx ?
Is the fan or the heat going crazy after some minutes of gaming like other pc gaming laptop ?
And under bootcamp with windows 7 or windows 8, is it noisy when playing ?
Thanks in advance for your feedbacks, i'm ready to buy it this week, but i would like to get those answers before buying.

    Hi ds store,
I don't think the MacBook Pro I'm talking about has mountain lion, because they were released only a few days ago and come with mavericks installed from the factory

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15 Fan Full Constant?

    Hello all,
I have a Macbook Pro Retina which is just over 1 year old. I dont have apple care so its just out of warrently.
    Its the Mid-2012 version.
Last week, i was editing video in Premier CC, and the fan never came on. I edited for about 2 hours and the Macbook became very hot, but the fan was never audiable..
The next day (and ever since), when i boot the macbook up from cold, the instant the OS loads and the login window appears, the fans are audiable and running fastly.
I have tried doing SMC reset aswell as pram resets, but these have had no effect.
The macbook is fully functional, tho its really anoying when i take the macbook into a studio and the fans are realy loud...
I have tried to book a genious bar appointment, but straight out, the site says 'no available appointments'. If you turn up at store, you get turned away.
I installed iStat to find out the fan speeds and they are stuck at around 2k rpm.
Is their anything i can do to try resolve this issue?

Thanks for the reply Kappy, as you can see on the screen shot, theirs no runaway precesses going on. I think its definatley a firmware/software issue. Are their an other resets i can do? Also, is it normal to have soo many processes/threads? - Im coming from a more 'windows' background where 63 process happen with nothing running...
I would take it to the Mac store to have it looked at but aparently the UK macstores arnt offering bookings anymore OR they are not notifying the public of a time to go online to book appointments...

  • Macbook Pro Retina + Windows 8 Questions

First: I know that Bootcamp doesnt have any Windows 8 drivers yet. I know that Windows 7 drivers will do temporarily.
In a month time, I will be getting a Macbook Pro retina. 13" base model. This would be my very first mac. I chose this mac because portability is a major factor for my everyday need. Im always on the move. I know the storage isn't enough but I will buy myself an external Hard drive. Depends on the budget. I will be using this laptop for not so heavy work. Mainly i will be studying Objective C and C++. Something for a free time self study developing. Reason why im putting windows in it, its because i need visual studio c++ for studying ( feel free to recommend any other application for c++ designed for mac). I chose windows 8 because the pro version is 60$ at my local retail.(I know how to do clean install without the requirements).
My questions to those who successfully installed Win8:
    1. What are the issues you encountered and how did you solved it?
    2. How's the performance? Laggy?
    Thanks in advance.

The update to boot camp is now available!
Just installed Windows 8.1 Pro to my MacBook Pro, Retina, Mid 2012, OS X 10.8.5: Memory 16GB 1600MHz DDR3
After going through the usual process from boot camp, then installed windows and the support drivers... the trackpad rt click did not work. I had to then go download the boot camp again from windows 8 using the url below and ran the set up.exe from the boot camp folder you can download from below. Run it within windows 8.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1638
    Boot Camp Support Software 5.0.5033
This solved the Trackpad Right Clicking issue (not working) as well as tapping.
The wireless and network connectivity and keyboard brightness and speakers issues where resolved as well. The Boot camp support software enabled a boot camp control panel available in the windows 8 system tray and from there you can enable the track pad to tap and use the secondary click.

  • Windows 8.1 ok on mid 2012 macbook pro retina ??

hi,im on the brink of purchasing windows 8.1 from microsoft but would like some feedback first if it runs ok on macbook pro retina mid 2012 ??

Windows 8.1 is compatible with the Mid 2012 MacBook Pro with Retina display, and you shouldn't have any problem by installing it.
To install Windows, follow these steps > http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf Remember to download the Windows support software, as indicated in the how-to

  • MacBook Pro Retina 13" fan very loud/overheats when playing full screen video/games

    Hi,
Just purchased a MacBook Pro Retina, refurbished (because why not - the same product for a cheaper price) around a month ago. It's the 13 inch and is the model before the most recent one came out (4GB of RAM instead of 8GB - late 2013). From the very first day, playing a full-screen video on any site (be it YouTube, Facebook, etc) just makes the fan much louder than usual (so loud that you can almost hear it more over the video itself). Thought it may have been just a thing with Flash Player being buggy, but the problem has persisted for a while now. I'm not even pushing the CPU to any limits - literally playing a full-screen video on Facebook (not even in HD) makes the fan go crazy.
Just last night I tried installing Borderlands 2 and it was the same thing - FPS rate was fine, no lag, just the fan was so loud that I actually got scared for my computer and turned it off. After closing the app and checking out the fan temperature, it was at 91c.
Never happens when browsing/surfing or doing my usual work.
Should I go give it back to Apple? The thing is I start university in less than a week (and hence will be traveling), so not sure if I can afford to give my laptop in to them for a long period of time (I know it should be free though since mine is a refurb item). May it just be an issue that is quickly repairable or is this worse?

During processor intensive activities—such as processing HD video or playing a game that makes extensive use of the graphics processor—the    fans speed up to provide additional airflow.

  • Macbook Pro retina 13" fan not spinning

Hi, I have had my macbook pro retina 13" (late 2013 model) since november, it had a fan problem after a month, where it made a horrible whirring noise and according to istat just wasnt spinning. This was independent of tempeartures for example 0rpm at 25 degrees and still 0rpm at 55 degrees, obviously it began to heat up rapidly after even just mld usage.
Took it back to apple and they cleaned the fan and the problem cleared up, however a few months later it has started again, surely this can't just be dirt build up seeing as the fan has been cleaned already and the computer is only 4/5 months old.
I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else, if they solved it, or just whether I should take it back to apple.
    Many Thanks

There are no bits you can flip to straighten this out.
Take it back to Apple, remind them they already cleaned it and suggest maybe they should replace it this time.
Apple is unique in the way they run their repairs. They are not trying to squeeze every penny out of you the way the car dealers are. They mostly want you to be a happy customer.

  • Why does my mid 2012 MacBook Pro Retina latptop shut down during software installation/updates?

Whenever I attempt to update preexisting software apps or install new ones, my mid 2012 MacBook Pro w/ Retina display will shut down and reboot itself. Obviously this has gotten frustrating as several of my existing apps are woefully out of date.
Any suggestions would be most helpful.
    PACOMPat

Thanks for the assistance and sorry for the late reply, I'm overseas doing HA work and don't always have internet access.
I tried utilizing the methods you mentioned and upon doing so I received the following message:
So I followed this set of instructions and when verifying and repairing disk permissions the window stated that the partition was okay.
After logging back in, I attempted to download a software update, sadly the system shut itself down and rebooted and I am still unable to install any updates for my out of date apps. I won't return to the States until June, I may have to wait until then to resolve this issue.
Thank you again for your assistance.
