2012 MBP Retina performance issues

Hi,
I have a mid 2012 entry level retina MBP (2.3 GHz i7, 8Gb ram) and recently installed Star Craft II under OSX.
Compared to the framerates posted by other users or in hardware reviews, I get abysmally low framerates.
SCII:WoL
Resolution close to 1440x900 (this one is not supported, but there are closeby resolutions), settings on "Ultra": 18-20 FPS. Settings on "High": 20-23 FPS.
Compared to what notebookcheck measured, this is a fraction of what I should be getting: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Apple-MacBook-Pro-15-Retina-2-3-GHz-Mid-2012 .78959.0.html
Other tests and user reports report similar framerates to the ones notebookcheck found.
There are serveral posts on low framerates and most of them seem to be solved by an SMC reset which I have performed multiple times to no avail. Also the SMC update released by apple at the beginning of this week changed nothing.
"Automated Graphics Switching" is disabled, so the GT 650m should be forced. Safari with few a tabs open (no flash) and dropbox is usually running in the background. My install is realatively clean with only dropbox, skype and a tex distribution installed.
I decided to run some more tests and bootcamped Windows 7. There SC2 runs better, but even if I play at a reasonable resolution (1440x900) and cap the framerate at 30, I get many 100ms "hickups" and the SC2 FPS tool indicates GPU temperatures of 90°C+.
These hickups can be observed in other games as well (e.g. Deus Ex: Human Revolution or Dead Island). No other programs (other than steam) running in the background.
I would like to take the machine to a local apple retailer, but I doubt they will have a performance table for games. I'm afraid to be told "everything is normal" and have my time wasted. Is there any way to produce "hard" evidence of the problem that increases my chances of being taken seriously?
Any help is appreciated!

Deselect this option to use the higher-performance discrete graphics processor at all times.

If Gareth can show issues with videos or websites, it may be easier to get the store interested.

Help!! I'm using a Mid 2012 MBP retina 2.3Ghz i7 with 8GB of ram 256SSD. for the past 2 years my write speeds has been consistently on 400MB/s and up via black magic test. but now it only have 100MB/s going down to 80MB/s. what should I do???? I have already cleaned and even restored my MBP still it's on 100MB/s. please help. I have to finish tasks on a timely manner.

No. This requires completely repartitioning the SSD. You can do that only by using the Network Recovery method or the method I outlined. My method preserves all your data and doesn't require doing a slow Network Recovery. But if you wish to do that instead. The purpose of the whole exercise is to "clean" the SSD of garbage collected during use that tends to cause the SSD to slow down as you've described.
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button. Set Zero Data - one-pass, click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • Macbook pro mid 2012 no retina performance drop after efi

Hi, mi macbook pro mid 2012 no retina after efi update the performance are too slow, thats is the same problem with retina, please fix it, in osx mountain lyon the aplications that used every daywith video is poor, in bootcamp with games is the same problem, the cpu clock drops from3.3 ghz to 1.2 ghz or more. Waiting for a mew efi update bescause my mac is the same that a macbook air

No Apple hasn't officially stated anything about this issue. After I updated to EFI Update 2.0 I noticed the issues and started doing my research and found people in the Macrumors forums having the same problems and eventually I was reading that users that didn't update yet weren't seeing the update in their updates meaning Apple pulled the update from the servers. Other users reported after calling Applecare that they were aware of the issue.

  • SQL Services 2012 Reporting Services Performance Issue - PowerView

Power view Reports are loading very slow while opening in SharePoint 2013, it is taking more than 15 secs. It is development environment, maximum 10 users , no traffic at all but still not sure why it is taking such long time.
We have 2 servers in SharePoint farm one is for SharePoint and other is for SQL. I have gone through the logs in reporting database, attached the same below. Can you please help me what we can say from the sheet attached ,whether it is slow or fast. Or where
    we are having issue.
SQL server version is SQL 2012 SP2.
    SharePoint 2013 is RTM.
Gone through the below blogs but no luck.

    Thanks.
    Thanks, Ram Ch

    Hi Ram Ch,
According to your description, your have performance issue when running your Power View report. Right?
In this scenario, based on your screenshot, it takes long time on data retrieval. How is the performance when executing the query in SQL Server Management Studio? Since you mention there's no traffic at all and 15 seconds will not cause query
time out, we suggest you optimize the query for retrieving data. Please refer to links below:
    Troubleshooting Reports: Report Performance
Please share some detail information about the data query if possible. Thanks.
    Best Regards,

  • MBP Retina display issue

The best way of explaining my issue is with a picture. As you can see the image on the left has issues with orange, almost like a sunburst effect? The [icture on the right is normal and okay.
The left is on a brand new, newly opened MBP Retina 15" and the right is on an old 17" MBP I've had for years. I did nothing to the retina, haven't changed any settings, this is new out the box. I looked at calibration settings etc but it's all on default.
I really have no idea what's going on!! Does anyone have any ideas or should I take my newly delivered MBP back the the Applestore for a genius appointment?

I have the same problem with my MacBook Retina 13... my LG monitor loose signal. Please help!

  • MBP retina bluetooth issue.

I'm using a MBP retina and i have install windows 7 on it, but i can't use my bluetooth, i think that i don't have the driver installed. anyone can tell me how i can install it? thanks

How is Win7 installed? Bootcamp, Parallels, or what?
Are you saying that Bluetooth does not work within Win7?
If you're using Parallels, you may need to select Bluetooth from the Parallels Devices dropdown, then External Devices (but you have to unselect it when returning to OSX). This sometimes helps with the CD/DVD devices to get Win7 to recognize them.

  • MBP Retina Migration Issues

I'm simply posting this to share my issues with the community, on the chance that it might help or reassure someone, rather than look for help myself at this point. I used the Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant to move from a Macbook Pro with Snow to a new Macbook Pro with Retina display and, of course, Lion.
    1) Original migration was going to take 255 hours over WiFi. Did very little after running for a couple of hours. There is no way once started to change the type of connection, pause, nor restart the migration. You have to cancel on the source machine, not the new machine. Then do a second time.
    2) Bought an Ethernet to USB adapter for $40 and redid through Migration Assistant. Took 3 hours of an estimated 1 hr 55 minutes. Creates a duplicate ID, which worried me. OK to simply delete the original ID. This software needs some serious work on usability.
    3) MA said it didn't migrate incompatible software, including Snapz Pro X (movie and screen cap program). Yet, when I started up there was Snapz. Deleted. I'm on the beta program for the new release, completely rewritten in cocoa. Looks like it will be great.
    4) Dropbox could not find its own folder on the MBP-R. Relink didn't fix until I re-relinked, did manually, found and "merged" folders. Related to having to use a second name when I used MA because my "name" was already used in the first attempt.
    5) Google Drive did not work. Same problem. Had to delete the Google Drive folder then recreated. Works now.
    6) Apple Track Pad does not work with Lion, quite sadly since Lion supports more gestures. I've read there is a lenghty work around but can't confirm that.
    7) Wake from sleep had some issues at first but seems improved, perhaps by latest update of Lion. Still binks and flashes, minor issue.
    8) Had continued to use Apple's Backup to store select folders on external hard drives, even after MobileMe closed. Worked great on old MBP. No longer works. Boots as trial version, then asks me to pay up for MobileMe to use, which I would if I could
    9) Icons/ desktop does not properly restore when it switches between internal display and external, Apple Thunderbolt Display, i.e. icons moved from right edge to middle of screen.
    10) Adobe CS6. Migrated CS5, then upgraded. All fine (so far) except Acrobat Pro left old icon on Dock, which instead of failing to open the old program, or opening the new one, does some peculiar copy protection routine. Had a Doh! moment before I simply deleted and replaced the icon.
    11) Using Timemachine with external RAID 5 (Pegasus R4) over Thunderbolt. Great. Tremendous speed improvement.
    12) Bluetooth device set up had lots and lots of problems. Took forever to find Mobile Mouse, Keyboard, and extrarodinarily long to find Trackpad (which, again, doesn't work when found). Did find my other MBP half way across the house -- immediately. Had to try repeatedly. Once I got them set up, though, they work -- except for the Trackpad.
    13) Lastinly, you'll notice this form itself doesn't even include Lion / 10.8 yet. Same problem happens in many places on Apple.com Sigh.
Good luck and enjoy the great new computer!

    14) iMovie problems. Apparently, prefs cause long movies to fail to save. There is an update, but the process doesn't work. Asks to a different Apple ID even when not needed.
By the way, here is the WiFi transfer time:

  • MBP-retina performance after SMC update

Anyone notice a substantial increase in performance after the MacBook Pro Retina SMC update from a few days ago? (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1559)
Before, I would have audio glitching when playing iTunes match or spotify, or intermittent graphics issues. After update, no issues and performance is very fluid.
    Thanks!
    -James

That's the purpose of that SMC update. Just search in this forum and you will see the experience of more people (probably problems installing the update, but you should find some good experiences)

  • 2012 MBP Retina Random Shutdown

Recently I've started having some issues with my 2012 Macbook Pro Retina. I'll be working as usual then it will suddenly freeze. Once it freezes it takes about 30 seconds then the screen goes dark and the machine turns completely off. I power it back up, and all my windows re-open, no error messages, no popups about improper shutdown or submitting a bug report to Apple.
This is becoming more frequent. It is happening 2-3 times a week now and I've lost hours of coding implementations because of it.
Any ideas on what may be causing this? Hopefully not a hardware failure

The most recent incident happened while I was in Google Docs on Google Chrome. The previous two times it happened I was working in Intellij 14.
The next time it happens I will likely have to take it to the Apple Store to have them run a diagnostics test on it. It is still under Apple Care so if its a hardware failure I should be able to get it replaced at no cost. If its a software issue I guess I'll have to either reformat or wait for the next OS X patch. The issues for me has been worse since the 10.10.2 update but that may just be coincidence.
I would like to know what those codes indicate. For you do you have the same error code in the logs / console. Previous shutdown cause: -128?

  • Mid 2012 mbp bootcamp install issues

I am having trouble installing Windows 7 64bit via bootcamp on my 15' mbp.  I made a usb boot drive and I am able to boot into windows 7 INSTALL, but it asks driver.  There's a browse and a rescan button.  Rescan does nothing.  I have browsed to the bootcamp driver folder and it fails to find anything.  Running through each folder I get the window to populate when I am under INTEL/CHIPSET/ALL folder but nothing will install.  I usually get "No new devices could be found.  Make sure the driver files are correct and located on the driver installation media."  However, the USB drivers crash the machine.
I am an IT person but this is my first Mac so I am not in my element.  (Actually I just bought a mini as well.)

I think I have similar problem.
I have MacBook pro mid. 2012. And for hole year it was perfect.
But several days ago I noticed some graphic artifacts all over my screen. I rebooted my system - but the problem was still there. I use gfxCardStatus to monitor and control video card status. And I noticed, that that glitch appears only when nvidia adapter is in use. I tried to roll back hole system for one week back with time machine, but no luck...
There's no apple store in my contry (Russia, Saint-Petersburg), but there's several apple authorized service providers. I called them for diagnostic, and they told me, that this is videoRAM problem, and only solucion is to replace motherboard, and it will cost me for something around $1000
Irony is that my year warranty expired just one week before this trouble appears.
So I'm working now only with integrated video

  • MBP Retina Bootcamp Issues

Today I picked up my new macbook pro retina. Very excited. Unfortunetly my job requires me to use windows pretty often so I needed to install windows 7 both as a bootcamp install and then use that as base for a VM. All basic stuff that I had running on my nacbook air. I have run into some issues though and I need advice.
I went through the normal driver download and installed Win 7 (64-Bit). The install went ok. The magic mouse and my apple keyboard worked which was a good start. I then installed the drivers. And things didn't well. First thing  after the driver install the mouse stopped working and then the keyboard went haywire and skipped letters sometimes or added a constant stream of a letter until I hit return. I hooked up a regular usb mouse I have but it is stuttering so bad its hard to use.
Next I have a Thunderbolt display. The nvidia control panel says that it is set to 2560x1440 but there is no way. I cant guess at to what it actually is but everything is huge. I have stared at this monitor 10-12 hours a day for a year. I know what it looks like and in OSX is looks normal. I have adjusted and adjusted to no avail.
At this point I started over and had the bootcamp program remove widows and reload. Same thing. Because I hate myself I did it for a thrd time. Each time I redownloaded the drivers.
This is killing me. I have to work in the morning and I can't. Any advice would be wonful!

Well this morning, out of the blue, my magic mouse started working  in windows but now OSX is losing the connection everytime I login and I have to repair it which is working 50% of the time. I can't win.
I was under the impression that under windows the onboard video (intel 4000) wasn't in use, just the GPU. Is this incorrect?
As for Parallels 7, that is what I use already. Sometimes I have to run on native windows so the software operates correctly thats why I have to dual boot. I don't like it but its out of my control. If I could VM it 100% of the time I would.

  • Mid-2012 MBP retina keeps freezing 2x in a row, sometimes has greenish tint

I'm at my wits' end.  I've taken it to the Apple store four times, had the hard drive wiped twice, and each time the problem comes back after about a day.
I've been unable to determine a cause.  It worked fine in safe mode, but I've had it freeze while using lightroom, ableton, FCP, and chrome.  Usually, the laptop will freeze and Ill have to hard reboot it, and it will then freeze within a few minutes, necessitating yet another reboot.  Sometimes the screen tint turns green-ish.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

that is good to know, because I honestly get the impression that I'm being given the run around so as to ensure the warranty expires before I can use it.
how do I get Apple to acknowledge that it's a hardware issue?  Is there something specific in the console messages that suggest this?  I really don't want to have to go back to the apple store yet again and have some 'genius' tell me to bark right back up the wrong tree once again.
thanks so much for your help, by the way

  • Early 2011 MBP 13" Performance issues??

I recently install a new samsung 840 Evo 240gb SSD and upgraded RAM to 8gb... the performance is fantastic but its lacking in the battery department. Is the battery getting beat up by the SSD or is there an underlying problem i missed?

    1. Check the cycle count of the battery against the rated life for your model. The battery may be due for replacement. If the power adapter is connected almost all the time, the battery may need replacing even though the cycle count is not too high.
    2. Follow these instructions, or these for OS X 10.8 or earlier.
    3. In the Energy Saver preference pane, uncheck the box marked
Enable Power Nap while on battery power
if it's shown (it may not be.)
    4. You can also try resetting the SMC.
    5. Make sure your system is up to date in Software Update.
    6. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

    1. When I plug the MBPr into a 27" imac to use as a secondary display it doesn't work
    2. When I plug in the HDMI to any other display nothing happens on the other screens, while the MBPr stays the same
    3. Has also had problems awaking from sleep
    Anyone else having display issues?

I cant speak for other but when I get mine I will post up what I get for you.
