2012 MBP Retina showing 25-35% drop in battery life after Mavericks update

I upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks on the day the new OS X version was released, and since then my battery life has dropped by about 25% to 2.5 hours when running resource intensive applications such as video playback or photo editing, and by about 35% to about 3.5 hours when running regular applications such as email and browsing.
Now, from what I understand from Apple's aggressive marketing campaign about Mavericks' numerous added features, battery life should improve from more intelligent CPU and memory usage compared to its predecessor. Clearly, that's not been the case for me and what looks like several other users. I'm wondering if this issue has been taken note of by Apple and if a patch is in the development for release soon. Also wondering if there's an easier resolution for this issue.
My Macbook configuration is as follows.
SDS

I ran some more diagnostics on the low battery situation and found Google Chrome to be the source of a high battery drain. Chrome wasn't an apparent battery drain source since the new significant energy consuming apps feature in OS X Mavericks also lists Safari when simply browing. To ascertain the relative magnitude of the battery drain from different browsers, I had to completely switch to using one or the other. With Safari, my battery life is in the range of 5.5 to 6 hours (browsing + intermittent high intensity apps use). This is marginally better than OS X Mountain Lion, but better nevertheless.
Complaint redacted. Looking forward to the next Google Chrome release that is compatible with OS X Mavericks.

Help!! I'm using a Mid 2012 MBP retina 2.3Ghz i7 with 8GB of ram 256SSD. for the past 2 years my write speeds has been consistently on 400MB/s and up via black magic test. but now it only have 100MB/s going down to 80MB/s. what should I do???? I have already cleaned and even restored my MBP still it's on 100MB/s. please help. I have to finish tasks on a timely manner.

No. This requires completely repartitioning the SSD. You can do that only by using the Network Recovery method or the method I outlined. My method preserves all your data and doesn't require doing a slow Network Recovery. But if you wish to do that instead. The purpose of the whole exercise is to "clean" the SSD of garbage collected during use that tends to cause the SSD to slow down as you've described.
Install OS X Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button. Set Zero Data - one-pass, click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • Retina MBP 2.6 only 3 hours of battery life?

My 1 week old Retina MBP 2.6 is only getting 3 hours max on battery with light surfing. When watching videos i also only get 3 hours tops. Bluetooth is off, keyboard light off, screen backlighting 50%, gfxCardstatus set to integrated only (also confirmed in energy saving settings). I run 10.7.4, all updates installed.
Is this normal? Isn´t it supposed to get at least 5 hours when browsing the web (no youtube)? Should i return it and get the 2.3 instead for more battery life?
    Thanks in advance.

There have been reports of problems with various models experiencing low battery life after installing Mountain Lion but as you're still using Lion, you should be getting at least 7 hours on battery for light web surfing (not a lot of YouTube videos, etc.).
My suggestion would be to take the machine into your local Apple Store and let them deal with the problem. Before that you can download the free "Battery Health" from the App Store which lets you see your battery health in real-time, as opposed to always having to go into your System Report. There's no reason that you should be getting less than 7+ hours of battery life.

I think you are sailing in uncharted waters with those kind of modifications.
I am only guessing, but if you have not already done so,  do a PRAM reset and then trash your FCP preferences.

My understanding is the Mac is doing a ram/hardware test during the grey screen, if the card you added had additional memory, then it is very likely the test will take longer - but I am no hardware expert.

  • Why are my contacts and calendars showing up on my daughter's iphone after I updated?  Help!

Why are my contacts and calendar showing up on my daughter's iphone after I updated?  Is there anyway to remove them or stop
them from going directly to her phone?  Help!!!!  Thanks guys

So, am I to conclude from all this that the best thing for one iMac and multiple family devices (2 x iphones, 1 x itouch, 2 x ipods) is to set up itunes account for each family member.  We don't use iCloud except for my (primary iphone)
We had similar problems to the above, and since the recent 6.0.1 update we've started getting each others texts, on top of my wife and I's contacts being replicated to our young son's itouch, and a seemingly random redistribution of apps.

  • My ipod keeps showing the apple logo on and off after i updated it?

my ipod keeps showing the apple logo on and off after i updated it?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • MBP 13" Aug09, lost 2 hours battery life after upgrading to SL

Hi, my Macbook Pro bought on Aug 09 lost 2 hours of battery life after an upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard.
I brought it to the Apple service center where they checked the battery and they said that the battery has no problem.
Then, they suggest me to format my mac and reinstall Snow Leopard on a clean disk which i did without any success.
So now, my battery still hold 100% of it's original capacity (over 5450mAh) but my battery died before 3 hours with 0 program running !? (it used to last over 5.5 hours while running Leopard)
What's the matter with my battery.
And of course, i tried all the calibration before i post this topic.
If anyone can help now, it would be so great ! can't expect anything from Apple as they consider my battery as new.
    Thanks !

I too have been experiencing worse battery life.
I used to have about 3.5 hours on my now one year old Unibody MBP.
After SL (and switch from original 5400rpm to seagate momentus 7200rpm) I'm now down at about 2 hours.
    Wifi enabled
    Bluetooth enabled
    Brightness around 80%
2 hours is very little compared to the promised 5 hours.
    My battery stats:
    Health: 94%
    Cycles: 112
    Full charge: 4344mAh
Feels like I'm on an old lousy PC laptop again.

  • MBP Retina shows wrong resolution on external display since 10.8.4

I have a MBP retina and I'm using it with an external display, Dell U2711, connected via a Mini-DP to DP cable. It all worked amazingly well until 10.8.4 came out. Now, when I connect the display, it no longer shows the correct 2560 X 1440 resolution, but shows 1080p. The displays preferences pane does not allow going over 1080p. It does recognize the display model, though.
It started with one port. The machine has two TB ports, so one of them worked fine and the other didn't (the one closer to the user was acting up). Then it degraded further to the second port. Now, if I plug and unplug several times and fiddle with the displays control panels, I might just get it right eventually. It takes some time, but eventually the machine gets it right. At least that's what I've been experiencing in the last few days.
I don't think it's a hardware issue. It's possible that my cable is at fault, but I seriously doubt that. I'm wondering if anyone else got the same problem, just checking before I go and splurge on a new cable (these cables are not easy to find).
    Thanks,
    Z

    This worked for me:
Step 1: Delete system windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: /Library/Preferences/
    Delete the file called com.apple.windowserver.plist
Step 2: Delete user windowserver preferences
In the Finder, from the menu bar, select "Go -> Go to Folder..."
    Enter: ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/
Delete all files that start with com.apple.windowserver   (On my rMBP, there was one file called com.apple.windowserver.12AFB147-95D6-5C70-8F62-C1E4F2BE81BE)
Step 3: Reset the PRAM    (These instructions are fromhttp://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • My MBP Retina shows 'Charged' but only stays at 99%.

    Hello!
I just got my MBP Retina and noticed that the first two cycles, my battery status showed 'Charged' at 100%, I'm on my 4th cycle now and now it doesn't go over 99%. Has anyone else exprienced this so quick? Should I be worried about a bad battery?
    Thanks

Once your Macbook is fully charged, your charger shuts off so i won't overcharge your battery.
It is also normal to see your battery level down to 99%.
Once you're down to 90% or 95%, the charging resumes until you're back to 100% again.
You've got a year warranty.  Play and enjoy your new Macbook Retina.
If after a couple of months you're not happy with the way yourr battery is performing, you can always take in for service.
Another suggestion, you have a 14 day return/exchange policy.  If you think it hasn't improve before the 14 days, you can take it back for a replacement.
    Good luck.

  • 2010 MBP Core i7 Running very hot, short battery life..

So my 2010 MBP has been running hot for the last couple of months.. all the time.. every time I pick it up its hot.. Even under very light load (IE: only safari, and mail open..)
At about the same time, my battery life is very short.. using only the integrated gfx card (I have an app that shows me what is in use) I only get 2-2.5 hours of run time..  My estimated time never climbs up any more.  Using cocoanut battery I am showing 96% capacity over all..
The sad part is I just let my applecare lapse, and this has been doing it since before it lapsed.
Any ideas?  I checked the fans and vents, they are working and are clear..

  • ICalender events not showing up after Maverick update on iMac.

After I updated to Maverick on my iMac, I noticed certain iCal events weren't showing up but they are showing up on my iPhone and Macbook. I know you can't sync through USB anymore - I only sync through iCloud anyways. Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Internet frequently fails mysteriously only on MBP (after Mavericks update)

Theres really not much to say, but I'll try to give as much information to get to the bottom of this.
For a few days now (I'm not sure exactly that it appeared first after the mavericks update) my MacBookPro 17" Early 2009 keeps frequeyently freezing for several seconds/minutes internet access with full WIFI signal strenght (and PROVEN working Wifi & internet, works at sime time flawlessly on iPad).
It comes back from alone, but looks like it does faster so, when using network diagnostics, but that can be just subjective.
Sometimes it works for hours without anything, another time it ***** every minute!
Oh and can't also use internal network, routers webfront, like I'm not connectec to Wifi at all, so the title is probably a little bit miseading.
I have NO clue and no clue where to even look into?!
    Thanks guys

    Hello ThaBrad,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with Wi-Fi on your MacBook.  I would be concerned about this too.
I recommend following the steps in the section labeled, "Symptom: The network connection drops unexpectedly" in the following article to resolve an issue like the one you described:

  • 2012 MBP Retina performance issues

    Hi,
I have a mid 2012 entry level retina MBP (2.3 GHz i7, 8Gb ram) and recently installed Star Craft II under OSX.
Compared to the framerates posted by other users or in hardware reviews, I get abysmally low framerates.
    SCII:WoL
Resolution close to 1440x900 (this one is not supported, but there are closeby resolutions), settings on "Ultra": 18-20 FPS. Settings on "High": 20-23 FPS.
Compared to what notebookcheck measured, this is a fraction of what I should be getting: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Apple-MacBook-Pro-15-Retina-2-3-GHz-Mid-2012 .78959.0.html
Other tests and user reports report similar framerates to the ones notebookcheck found.
There are serveral posts on low framerates and most of them seem to be solved by an SMC reset which I have performed multiple times to no avail. Also the SMC update released by apple at the beginning of this week changed nothing.
"Automated Graphics Switching" is disabled, so the GT 650m should be forced. Safari with few a tabs open (no flash) and dropbox is usually running in the background. My install is realatively clean with only dropbox, skype and a tex distribution installed.
I decided to run some more tests and bootcamped Windows 7. There SC2 runs better, but even if I play at a reasonable resolution (1440x900) and cap the framerate at 30, I get many 100ms "hickups" and the SC2 FPS tool indicates GPU temperatures of 90°C+.
These hickups can be observed in other games as well (e.g. Deus Ex: Human Revolution or Dead Island). No other programs (other than steam) running in the background.
I would like to take the machine to a local apple retailer, but I doubt they will have a performance table for games. I'm afraid to be told "everything is normal" and have my time wasted. Is there any way to produce "hard" evidence of the problem that increases my chances of being taken seriously?
    Any help is appreciated!

Deselect this option to use the higher-performance discrete graphics processor at all times.
