2012 Retina MBP IR function/option missing

I would like to use my Apple TV remote with my Retina MBP.  However, there is no option to enable or disable the IR under System Prefs.  Does the 2012 MBP not have IR?  If it does, where do I turn it on?

Does not come with an IR port.

  • Mid 2012 retina MBP keeps shutting down

Hello, my mid 2012 retina macbookpro is being annoying, it keeps turning off at random times, I read some other people have been experiencing the same frustration
Do you happen to know what may be the problem and if there's a solution I should try before turning it in on warranty (I need it for work)...
    Thanks,
    Kots88

  • Wrist pain in 2012 Retina MBP due to trackpad location?

I just got my new Retina MBP and have wrist pain from an hour of surfing.  I think the trackpad location so close to the edge of the laptop and the sharp edges near the inset area/"latch" have me contorting my wrist.  This is new pain, especially compared to my 2007 MBP, which had a good inch between the edge of the laptop and the trackpad edge.  Is anyone else experiencing this pain?  Other than buying a different trackpad and lugging that everywhere with me, are there other solutions? It's bad enough to have me consider returning it and sticking to my 2007 MBP.

The trackpad and location are pretty much the same on the 2011 and both Retina and non-Retina machines. I had a 2006 that I sold for a 2011 and it took me some time to become accustomed to the new arrangement - not any pain to speak of. I'm sure that if you'll just adjust your hands to take advantage of the new layout you'll have no problems.
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Can I upgrade my late 2012 Retina MBP SSD? (128GB)

Would like to upgrade to 512GB.
    Recommendations? Pros, cons?
    Thanks in advance

    Another option is Transcend:

Note that tis is available for older rMBPs.
    Ciao.

  • 2012 Retina MBP shutting off randomly

Recently it's been shutting off at random points and when I power up it won't turn back on right away. Also when I close the lid it will completely shut off, and when it turns back on I get a message saying that it restarted due to a problem. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I did run the Apple Hardware Test and after running both normal and extended tests no trouble was found. I managed to download the widget called iStat Pro, I realized that my CPU was idling at 50%, and the CPU temperature was 80 degrees Celsius. This caused my fans to run consistently at 6000RPM. I discovered that the random shut down while running on the battery was caused by too much current being drained by the system. So as you suggested, it was indeed happening for safety reasons.
By looking at the Activity Monitor and selecting all processes I saw that a process called printjobmgr was utilizing 100% of the CPU. I found this strange as I had performed several restarts and would have expected this process to terminate on its own. As soon as I used Force Quit, everything returned to normal. Strangely, every time I print something, the printjobmgr starts up and utilizes 100% of the CPU. This lasts until the printing is finished. I still was unable to find a permanent solution to this.

  • Multiple problems with my 2012 Retina Macbook Pro

    Hi,
I just got my 2012 Retina MBP with 16GB RAM and 768 GB HD. OS X Lion 10.7.4 is running and all requisite updates are installed. I am quite surprised at what I think are bugs that are associated with this MBP. Here are my issues. Hopefully someone can assist. Today being the 4th of July, their phone support is offline.
    1. The trackpad does not work well after I open the trackpad app via preferences. I cannot scroll or do Mission Control or Expose for instance.
Yes, I have installed the following update to no avail: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1543
No, I do not see the "Macbook Pro Trackupade Update" as described within the following article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4297? viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
    2. Whenever I swipe with my 4 fingers to get to the next screen, the screen darkens and becomes completely black. This is highly unusual and does not happen with my Macbook Air or my imac.
    3. I have about 4 Safari windows running on seperate screens and this seems to bring my machine to a crawl. This again has never been a problem with my MBA or my IMAC.
    Pls Help!!
P.S. I will pay the "Geniuses" a visit tomorrow.

    Regarding point#2:
The Safari issue has abated however I observed that the "Windowserver" process is consistently taking up 90-100% of the CPU and thus bringing my machine to a crawl. It seems like others are experiencing similar issues. Here is one instance where this person's "windowserver" process is crashing.

This is very disappointing and underwhelming.

  • Upgraded 2012 MACBOOK PRO 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB an alternate for RETINA MBP 15 or NOT?How good is its potential, reliability ?

I am a student and an aspiring filmmaker.I am also into digital cinematography (Canon 550D) and now will be venturing into editing. I am in DIRE NEED of help
I have a few problems regarding the purchase of Macbook pro.I live in Kolkata(India).I have been waiting for the past 1 and a half years to buy a Mac but after the release of Retina Macbook pro 15.I am left confused. Its near unupgradability and unreparibility rumors, delayed delivery, and 1st generation hardware issues especially the lack of Optical drive made me reconsider my decision of buying one.
I want to know whether I can go for the top model of Non Retina - 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB 1 GB Nvidea as an alternate choice for Retina MBP pro or NOT ?
1.I wanted to buy the Retina Base model. Though it is very recently launched and there is a big risk buying it because they say it is unrepairable and unfixable as 'everything is glued into the motherboard' dialogue scares me. Something goes wrong after purchase and they send it back to US, is what the Apple officials said. Moreover they don’t keep one on a demo at Apple stores in kolkata. I have searched almost everywhere and have been to many resellers in my city but no use.
NOW,I am very sceptical about custom ordering a Macbook 15 non retina with High-Res 1680X1050p from US.I don’t know how much custom duty or expenses I have to pay and is it safe or not. Time is also a factor. Sadly, I have to buy one in Kolkata (my city) it seems.
    2. I am opting for Macbook Pro 15,2.6 Ghz,8GB RAM. Buying it for the sole purpose of editing(audio, video, photos).I need something which is fast along with a good screen size. My original decision was to buy the 17inch but after the launch of Retina and the upgraded 15 inch, I am only looking forward to the upgraded models. Many say 13 inch is fast, but it features a dual core with a maximum of 2.9Ghz clockspeed. I on the other hand want a quad core i7 with good upgradability options and a good screen size. The 13 inch may be a favorite for many, but I want nothing less than a 15 inch. One good option I get with non Retina 15 is its upgradability, while many say Retina MBP 15 can be made upgradable in future but that time is yet to come and by the time the whole web becomes ‘retina friendly’ and all applications supporting its 2880X1800 resolution, I may end up waiting only. Yes the picture quality remains unbeatable when compared to Retina Pro and it will always be. Though friends, I am a student, I want something which is fast, can run almost anything and future dependable. Retina Mac book Pro in India is 2799 USD - Base model. I cannot pay that amount just for the screen. As far as speed is concerned, I plan to get an OWC SSD and a 16 GB OWC RAM in the future resulting in greater speed when comparing the configuration with Retina 15.That problem is solved.
My problem here is this: The web is filled with reviews and videos of Retina Macbook Pro and the upgraded Macbook Pro 15 is just no where, if you even find a few videos, they only feature unboxing videos of Macbook pro 15 (i7-2.3Ghz-4GB-500GB-500MB Nvidea).Other videos compare the 2.3ghz model with Retina 15 pro. They are not elaborate like the 15 Retina Pro reviews.
    1. I want to know about the real performance, potential, pros, cons of Macbook Pro 15 (i7 2.6Ghz 8GB RAM 750 GB 1GB Nvidea graphics).
So my question to you is what is your opinion on the 15 inch non retina ? HOW FAST do you think is the new upgraded 15inch non retina i7-2.6Ghz-8GB-750GB model really is ?I have read on many mac forums and seen on a particular youtube video that 15inch 2.3Ghz model takes an alarming 40 seconds to start because of traditional hard drive ! A normal DELL Inspiron starts at 15 secs max with i3+4 GB RAM and this particularly confuses me about the whole quad core processing and stuff and speed when running applications like C6,FCP,Lightroom etc is to be determined in regard to the model I want to buy.
    2. Is it necessary to buy APPLE CARE WARRANTY when buying a laptop from Apple. What are the benefits and how is it different form the normal customer care ?
    3. Please enlighten me on some nice headphones from Sennheizer under 90 USD.I am considering Sennheiser HD 439.I am not a bass freak and I want something to use for listening to voice, loud clear. In short, a headphone for all purpose. I heard the HD 449 is not that good compared to HD 439.They say it is Jazz oriented. Another confusion  !
Finally, If you know anyone who knows about this configuration (15inch 2.6 8GB RAM 750GB) and its performance than please help me out my friends. Any small detail, input, you feel like please let me know. Please help me be sure and satisfied am buying my Macbook Pro very soon and I am awaiting your response.

Well, are you talking about a 750 Hard Drive or SSD?  If SSD (quite expensive) it will certainly be as fast.  One option is to get the smallest HD they have and with the Non Retina you can upgrade the HD to an SSD later or now but save a little money.  Check with iFixit or OWC for instructions.  HD's do take longer to start up and load, but once open, the processor and video work just the same as on the Retina model.  The SSD speed is nice, but really not critical.  So you have to wait a minute for your computer to boot up.  The other big question is you need to find out if the non-retina model will take 16GB of ram.  According to OWC's site, it will, 16GB for 150USD.  Once you get programs open and resident in ram, everything will fly.

  • Why does watching just youtube videos causes my fanspeed to be very audible! im using a retina MBP 2012 june

why does watching just youtube videos causes my fanspeed to be very audible! im using a retina MBP 2012 june

Video use a lot of CPU/GPU resources and thus creates heat.  The fans speed up in order to dissipate the heat.  If you open Activity Monitor, it will show you the % of CPU that the video utilizes.  At high speeds, the fans are very much audible.
    ciao.

  • Power Nap update mid-2012 15" MBP non-Retina

Is there a Power Nap update for the mid-2012 15" MBP (non-Retina) with SSD?  The Retina version is not compatible

You hit the nail on the head, only retina mbp and the air support Power nap, something to do with flash etc

  • Suggestion on Used 'regular' MBP vs. Retina MBP 15"

    Hi there,
I'm planning to buy a Used MBP 15", and is trying to figure out which way to go. I outlined 3 options for myself:
    Used MBP 15" regular (none retina) of Late 2011-Mid 2012 models, with higher specs i.e. 8GB RAM, 500/750GB HDD (or get 4GB RAM and then upgrade it myself, as I heard it's very inexpensive);
Used MBP 15" Retina of average specs (8GB RAM and 256GB SSD). Would be about $300 higher than #1.
Refurbished MBP 15" Retina from Apple Store. Would be about $300 higher than #2 but with 1 year warranty.
I do not really need Retina for my purpose, but looking into it only from the future perspectives point of view (there might be a need for it in 2-3 years, and I assume resale value for those would be higher in 3 years or so). I would need speed and preferable bigger Internal storage (but can also live with 256GB SSD and the rest to be External).
As far as I heard older (non-retina) versions also more upgradable than retina ones.
What would be Apple/MBP folks suggestions on which way to go?
    Thanks in advance!

    For SSD-like speed:
Disk drive performance has improve dramatically compared to the disks that come in the non-Retina MBPs.  For around $110 you can get a Seagate 1 TB SSHD hybrid 2.5" drive that has an 8 GB SSD cache.  It provides SSD-like performance for a fraction of the cost of an SSD and with high capacity.
Installation instructions for RAM and disks are available at ifixit.com.
$5 toolkit with the tiny Phillips screwdrive to open the Mac and a torque screw driver for changin the disk:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/TOOLKITMHD/
Inexpensive USB 2.0 disk enclosure for chainging out the disk: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/ES2.5BPU2S/
Porting the data from the old drive to the new one is easy:
Install the new drive in the external enclosure.
Install OS X onto the new drive.
    Boot from the new drive.
Use Migration Assistant to copy data from the old drive to the new one.
Physically swap the two drives using the tutorial above.

  • Retina MBP worth the price?

    Hello,
Trying to decide on a MP or MBP for home use.
I like the idea of the high res screen, but have been reading about problems.
Some web development and gaming in windows 7

The only item I disagree with below is #1, since there are already SSD upgrades available out there. Otherwise, a prospective buyer should consider all points below before deciding if the Retina is the correct purchase for their situation.
The Retina makes sense for a lot of people and I think it's a brilliant machine. But if I was to buy today, I would reject a MacBook Pro Retina for me. The older MacBook Pro would be more productive for my specific uses, for many of the reasons below.
    Courcoul wrote:
And there are considerably more disadvantages on the Retina MBP
The system is sealed. No upgrades possible. Plonk down all your cash from the start.
All servicing will have to be done by Apple, as components are custom and only available from them.
The I/O ports are limited to TB, USB3, SDXC card, HDMI and analog headphone out (missing FW800, Gbit Ethernet, digital audio out and digital/analog audio in from the regular model).
Need to purchase external dongles for anything not covered by the default I/O ports.
No internal optical drive, need to carry an external dongle if you use the media.
No antiglare option on the screen.

  • New Retina MBP Doesn't See Time Capsule

Just purchased a new retina MBP and have 2 probems with it.
    1.  It doesn't see my Time Capsule, when using Airport Utility it states that 'no configured airport base stations have been found'.  I also have an iMac which sees the TC ok.
    2.  I did a superduper backup of my old MBP but set up the new MBP as a new machine just importing the applications from the backup using Migration assistant.  Because of the problem in item 1 above I tried to start up using the external backup but failed. The new MBP cannot startup on the backup disk (Freeagent GoFlex 1TB) even though it's shown as an optional startup in the settings.  When trying to startup from it the machine just goes to a black screen and does nothing.
    So far, not too impressed.
    Regards

    1. Yesterday my mbp-r was unable to find my AP extreme base station in Airport Utility, even though the network seemed to be functioning perfectly. Rebooted the mbp-r (not painful given the speed), and now all is well with Airport Utility. Mysterious, but it worked.
    2. Does superduper clone the recovery partition? (I think I read somewhere it doesn't.) And if not, can you boot from such a clone? IIRC, Carbon Copy Cloner can produce a recovery partition.

  • Non-retina Hi-Res (1680x1050) MBP 15" vs. Retina MBP 15"

Hi, I have this question as an additional question within my other topic, but then decided to start a separate discussion (for clarity).
Which one would be suggested for Non-Photo/Movie Editor, but rather for an average user:
    Option #1: Non-Retina MBP 15" (mid-2012), Hi-Res (1680x1050) anti-glare, i7-2.7Ghz, RAM=8GB, HDD=1TB, Video=1GB (RAM, HDD and battery can be upgraded/replaced easily, has Optical Drive)
    Option #2: Retina MBP 15" (early-2013), i7-2.7Ghz, RAM=16GB, SSD=500GB, Video=1GB (nothing can be changed/upgraded, No Optical Drive).
Both of them are Refurbished. The price-wise - those seems to be the same (although #1 seems to be slighly more expencive than #2 :S)).
Sounds like #1 give you good enough resolution, and option to upgrade to SSD (once it goes down in price in 1-2 years), while in the mean time gives a lot of storage. Should not have issue with most Apps still do not support Retina. But would be 0.5 kg heavier.

Here is what we have for my region:
    10. Transfer of Plan
With Transfer of Covered Equipment to New Owner. Subject to the restrictions set forth below, you may make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your rights under the Plan to another party, provided that: (a) the transfer includes the original Proof of Purchase, the Plan's Confirmation and all of the Plan's packaging material, including printed materials and these Terms and Conditions; (b) you notify Apple of the transfer by sending, faxing or e-mailing notice of transfer to Apple Inc., ATTN: Agreement Administration, MS: 217AC, 2511 Laguna Blvd, Elk Grove, CA 95758, U.S., fax number 916-405-3655 or [email protected], respectively; and (c) the party receiving the Plan accepts the Terms and Conditions of the Plan. When notifying Apple of the transfer of the Plan, you must provide the Plan Agreement Number, the serial number of the Covered Equipment being transferred and the name, address, telephone number and email address of the new owner.
(ii) With Transfer From Original Covered Equipment to New Covered Equipment. You may make a one time, permanent transfer of the coverage under the Plan to a new Apple product that is owned and purchased by you within thirty (30) days of the Covered Equipment purchase. The new product must be eligible for coverage under the Plan and at the time of transfer both products must be covered under the manufacturer’s one (1) year limited warranty.  Apple will issue a Plan Confirmation for the new product, which will then become the Covered Equipment. When notifying Apple of the transfer, you must provide the Plan Agreement Number, the serial numbers and Proof of Purchase of the products being transferred by sending or faxing, where available, notice of transfer to Apple as set forth in the section immediately above.

  • Mid-2012 retina macbook pro nvidia gpu panics

I bought my mid-2012 retina macbook pro in September 2012. It is 8 months out of warranty. I always look after it and use it carefully. Since 2 weeks ago, I encountered the problems below,
1.turn into black screen after running for about 15 mins, but the system is still running because the keyboard is still functional. After reboot, i record the log as below, it shows that it is a GPU Panic.
    2. display would not turn on after pressing the power button but can still hear the apple start up chime and the system keep running with the screen
    off.
    3. after erased the hard drive and re-installed Mavericks. Under a new installed system, it can run normally for about 1 day, after that especially after a shut down or restart, the problems above came back.
I am currently working in Thailand but I have no plan to go back to the US in a short period of time. I brought the laptop to the local apple service, they said it is certainly the logic board or GPU failure and the parts need to be replaced. The cost of the replacement is around half of the price that I paid for this laptop. I feel really disappointed so I called apple telephone service if there is anything that they can help. However, instead of helping me allocate the cause of these problems, the suggestion I received is to buy a new Mac Book and accept the fact that I am just unlucky in this case. This is the first time in my life to encounter mother board or GPU failure excluding artificial damage, they are supposed to be reliable espeically under the name of Apple. It is just so hard for me to accept it.
Below is the system message of the problem, it would be much appreciated if anyone can give me some suggestion that can help me to fix my problem at the lowest cost. Thank you very much.
