2013 13" Retina Macbook Pro won't resume properly when connected to external display

Have a lovely new 13" Retina macbook,
When it's connected to my display by a displayport->hdmi adapter and the lid is shut if the laptop sleeps then it will not resume properly. I get a black screen, or a blue screen with a cursor, and I have to reset the macbook to use it again.
Without the display connected it works fine every time ( by lifting the lid ).
Any Ideas?

Had a chat with apple support, and this got fixed
Solution was a SMC controller reset

and a PRAM reset

  • MacBook Pro's Color LCD "shifts" when connected to external display?

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro with the hi-res anti-glare screen. I just noticed that the internal color LCD "shifts" its colors when I connect it to an external display (a Dell 2408 WFP). If I disconnect the external display, the colors internal color LCD go back to "normal".
I have two images to show what I mean:
This is what it looks like with the external display disconnected i.e. the MacBook Pro on its own: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/vazexqi/4558641163/sizes/l/>
This is what it looks like with the external display connected: <http://www.flickr.com/photos/vazexqi/4559271260/sizes/l/>
The wallpaper is from pixelgirlpresents.com. I didn't notice this problem before with my older 2006 Core Duo MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.7).
My guess is that with the external display connected, somehow the color LCD decides to use the external display's profile as well (instead of its own).
Any ideas on why this is happening? And, more importantly, any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks.

@Stefan: Thanks for the tip. I tried it but unfortunately it didn't solve the issue. The color is still off.
Incidentally, just out of curiosity, I tried these two things:
    1) I tried the "Mirror Displays" option in the Displays Preference Pane. With this option enabled, both displays actually displayed the right colors (right with respect to how each display is calibrated).
    2) I opened the same desktop wallpaper in Preview. Whenever I drag the Preview window so that it spans/crosses both displays (external and Color LCD), there is a light flicker in the wallpaper in the Preview Window. For that brief moment, I can see that the color is right before it changes to the shifted color on the Color LCD.
I found a possibly related thread on a different forum <http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=37841>. That doesn't seem to help when both displays are connected.
Now, I am just wondering if this is considered normal - wonky color shifts between the desktop/different windows happen when you have two displays connected....

PS: Note that I am not a graphics designer so my definition of right/wrong is just based on my experience looking at the wallpaper and remembering what it should look like on each display by itself.

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep properly when Aperture 1.1.2 is running.

I was working on photos in the airport. I closed the lid of my MacBook Pro, put it in my awesome BrainCell from Tom Bihn, got on the plane, and when I took out the MacBook after we passed 10,000 ft - my machine had crashed. It was insanely hot - like, too hot to literally handle. I booted it, and it reported kernel panic. I see the same behavior if I put the MacBook to sleep explicitly (which it appears to do) and Aperture is running. Crash, unless I'm plugged in and constantly giving it power.
My MacBook does not do this when apps like Firefox are running. This is very bad - it has caused corruption in one of my libraries already. Aside from always quitting Aperture before going to sleep, does anyone know of a fix for this?

Sleep/wake issues have haunted every powerbook I've owned, from the 3400 to the Lombard to my PB G4. I use a Kyocera KPC650 with my G4 PB, and the rule of thumb is it's necessary to kill the connection and remove the EVDO card BEFORE attempting to put the PowerBook to sleep. Just a bad idea to risk it.
I've had problems with USB dongles, hubs, etc. and after years of trying to resolve the source of sleep/wake issues, the general rule of thumb for ALL Mac PB/MBP is to remove peripheral devices before attempting sleep, or at least NEVER change what's inserted into the computer while it IS asleep (USB peripherals, drives, etc, but this even includes power adapters). A general observation is that the computer freaks out if status of peripherals is changed while asleep, and it wakes up to a different condition set than when it went to sleep. In most cases, resolution requires a hard reboot/re-start (sometimes this can be avoided by closing the lid, and trying to get the computer to re-engage sleep, then trying to wake it again).
In some cases, I suspect too many peripheral devices places a burden on the power supply, and the computer can't supply enough juice to power up the devices under the load.
So some problems stem from hardware issues, and some from software problems. Best answer is to not even try, as there's too many variables (e.g. right-sided USB ports behave differently than left-sided ports, etc).

  • OSX 8.2 new Retina Macbook Pro won't wake from sleep.

Since upgrade to OSX 8.2 new Retina Macbook Pro won't wake from sleep. Tablet lights are on in morning and fans running like crazy, but it requires hard quit and start. Tried with no apps running, no change. It was fine before this last update. Wasn't the recent firmware update supposed to fix this issue? It seems to have started one for me.

I have the exact same problem with my Macbook Pro OS 10.8.4. What happens is: I work on the train, press cmd/alt + eject to put to sleep..pop it in my bag...get home or office... open the lid...and nothing! Battery indicator shows I have plenty of juice but it will not wake up no matter what key I press.
The only difference between use on the train and home/office is the plugging in of peripherals and mains power. It happens sparadicially, perhaps once or twice a week and I always send a 'panic report', so somewhere there will be approx 20 reports of this fault at Apple.

Macbook Pro won't start properly... keeps restarting without chime!
Late 2007 Macbook pro.  OS upgrade worked great for me.
I have had this problem on and off for a month or so.  I simply cannot figure out what the issue is.  I have tried poerup with and without AC power and with/without battery installed.
Starting in Safe mode does not help.
Trying to start with a disk does not help.
It sort of seems like it might be an internal power issue or GPU issue.
It also feels sort of like a software compatibility issue since my Macbook Pro gets reallly slugish for no apparent reason sometimes and IU have to restart.
I have three different anti-virus programs so I doubt it is a virus issue.
I noticed all this start after I did a Mountain Lion upgrade and then tried to start up VMware Fusion.  Fusion seemed to just bog down the computer horribly but did not cause a system crash.
I need to edit an important sequence on Final Cut Pro and don't want it to freeze me out!
Anyone who has had this problem and resolved it please let me know
    God bless

  • My MacBook Pro will not powerup (even when connected to power supply).

My MacBook Pro will not powerup (even when connected to power supply). The caps lock key is the only light on.

    Hi PatB11902,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If your MacBook Pro does not seem to power on, but the caps lock key will light up when you press the caps lock key, you are likely seeing a video issue.
There are several steps that can help troubleshoot this behavior, found at this link:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support
    Start with these steps:
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Start up in Safe Mode.
If your Mac does not start up normally after these steps, here are some additional tips that can help:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on - Apple Support
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.
If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).
Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).
    Sincerely,
    Jeremy

  • My 2013 15" retina macbook pro screen has a yellow tint, should i ask for a replacement?

So yesterday i got my retina macbook pro 15 " and right away i noticed my worst fear ( since i previously had read some similar stories) my screen has a noticeable yellow tint specially on white tones, websites have a "newspaper look " to them, since i bought this computer because im starting web design in university in a couple of months i would say i'm pretty much ******, people say i shoud just calibrate it, but most people dont calibrate their screen, so it would be  a mess, my work would look good on my computer but ****** on other's people computer
I'm very surprised because i thought this issue only affected the initial batch of retina macbook pros, but i checked my serial online and my computer was made in January 2013 so its quite new, the panel is a Samsung "LSN154YL01001.
I have read that usually LG panels don't suffer as much from the yellow tint but they suffered from Image retention, is it stil like this? what do you think i should do should i keep this computer with the samsung screen or get apple to give me a new one hopefully with a LG panel or at least a samsung without yellow tint

Actually MOST People that work in all parts of the Design field DO Calibrate their screens. It is the only way to make sure what you are looking at on your computer screen will be the same on other design professionals screens and to the general public.
Wherever you got the notion that Design professionals and or design schools of all types don't calibrate their screens is completely incorrect.
So it is up to you whether you calibrate or not and or to return that Retina for one that has a better color balanced screen from the start. Along with that the new unit you get may have other problems as the Retina models are plagued with random problems. The screens only be one of them.

  • Dual 4K Monitors on 2013 15" Retina Macbook Pro?

Sorry in advance if any of this has already been covered in another forum, but I've not been able to find it anywhere.
I'm looking into buying a pair of monitors for my Macbook Pro to run in clamshell mode. I have the late 2013 15 in Retina Macbook Pro with the dedicated 2GB Nvidia GT 750M graphics card. I know through online research that the computer is capable of driving two 2560x1440 monitors at 60 Hz, or a single 4K monitor at 60 Hz, however, I have yet to see confirmation of its ability to drive dual 4K monitors at 60 Hz.
Has anyone else tried, or even thought about doing the same thing?

I managed to get hold of Display port 1.2 cable and the issue doesn't occur with it.

  • Can you install 16gbs of ram in a 2012/2013 non retina macbook pro?

the newest non retina macbook pro on the apple website. the reason im asking is that apple only offers 4gbs and 8gbs. does apple not sell 16gbs of ram on the macbook because of price or does the computer not support it? im getting the 2.9GHz dual-core intel core i7 btw thanks for the help.

According to this usually-reliable source, two @ 8GB will work:

  • Macbook pro won't start up when it's connected toThunderbolt monitor. I purchased them together almost 2 years ago and they have always worked perfectly together until today. Anyone know why?

I've used my macbook pro and thunderbold monitor together since purchasing them almost 2 years ago. Today, my laptop will not start up when connected to teh display. It will start up if I disconnect, but will then freeze if I plug the display in. Any ideas why? I'm running OSX 10.7.5

The support article linked below is somewhat outdated. Where it refers to starting up from an installation disc, you should instead start up in Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
If you don't have a current backup of all the data on the startup volume, and you want to preserve that data, then you must try to back up before you do anything else. Ask for instructions if you need them.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to reinstall OS X from Recovery, if necessary. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.

  • Problem waking MacBook Pro when connected to external display

I have the new 13" MacBook Pro and like to use it connected to an external VGA display (Xerox) with the MacBook Pro in closed clamshell mode. The problem I am having is that after working for a a few hours, when I put the Mac to sleep with mains power connected, usb keyboard connected and the external display connected (via mini display to VGA adapter), the Mac will sometimes refuse to wake. I have a wireless Mighty Mouse also and the Mac is set to wake with Bluetooth devices. When I click a key on the keyboard or click the mouse a few times the pulsing sleep light at the front of the Mac goes solid but nothing appears on the external display. If I open the MacBook Pro the solid light goes out but the Mac does not respond. If I close the MacBook Pro display, the solid light comes on again. I have no option but to force a restart. This is an intermittent problem. I have yet to have this happen when no external display is connected.

I have the exact same problem.
    Here's my story:
To give you some backgroud, my setup involves having the macbook on a mstand hooked up to an external monitor. I run a usb hub from my macbook, this is where my mouse transceiver is plugged in. I use am Apple wireless bluetooth keyboard (latest slim model)
I recently purchased the 13.3' inch 2.26 MBP as I gave my older 2.0 uMB to a family member. The computer is in the stock configuration with no hardware upgrades.
I have noticed weird behaviour when waking the computer from sleep when the lid is closed. When i wake the computer up (by tuning on bt keyboard), the keyboard light blinks like there is not bt connection and the computer will wake in an inactive state. The led light will be on, but when i flip the screen up....nothing. Screen is dark, keyboard pressing does not illicit any responses. I have to do a hard reboot by holding down the power button to restart the computer. Unfortunately any previous data or work is lost.
I work in IT so I completed troubleshooting and also things outlined on forums in google. Reset PRAM, reset SMC and also reinstalled OSX. Still I get the same result. Fearing I purchased a defective unit, I called Apple and they told me i could exchange the computer so I dropped by the apple store and exchanged it quite easily.
I've spent hours restoring from time machine and I am experiencing the same issue on my new laptop. I'm now assuming its not hardware but more firmware related as I had to do a bluetooth firmaware upgrade when I bought the computer when I checked for software updates.
Is anyone else having any wake issues with their new MBPs? And what should I do next? Should I exchange for a 3rd unit? Thanks for you help everyone.

  • Late 2013 15" Retina Macbook Pro - wifi connection timeout with one router

    Hi,
I've recently purchased a new Macbook Pro retina 15 inch late 2013 model. Everything is fine at home, but at work I cannot connect to one wireless router (Netgear WAG102). The computer tries to connect but I get a connection timeout error after a few seconds for every attempt.
I have tried every suggestion for wifi issues that I can find on the forums, and have reset the router.
A colleague has also recently purchased the same computer except 13 inch model - he has exactly the same problem.
Any suggestions? I suspect given that two of us have the same problem that there is an incompatibility with the MBP and this particular router. I notice that there are quite a few discussions about similar issues with the macbook pro.

I too have a MBP Retina, 15", late 2013, and am having wifi connection issues.  I've tried several fixes suggested on these discussions and by Apple.  Nothing corrects the problem.  I've been told it's my router, but I find that difficult to believe give that my wife has a MBP 13" 2012 (non retina), that has no issues at all, nor do our iPhones.  It's just my MBP Retina.
My issue seems to be when waking from sleep, I lose the wifi connection.  I have to turn wifi of then on again, and it reconnects.  The only thing that corrects the problem for me is when I disable bluetooth.  I have the magic mouse and it's basically useless becuase I need bluetooth on for it to work.
I find this to be an annoying problem.  This is my first MacBook, and I really like it, but this wifi thing is bad.  Never had this problem with my Windows machines.
