I've only had my new iMac for a week and today when I rebooted I got a gray circle with a line through it. I've already done the command-r and used Disk Utility to Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions... over and over. As a last resort I even reinstalled Mountain Lion with the OS X Internet Recover. No such luck. After it still booted with the gray circle with a line through it.
I was able to use "Scan Image for Restore" to see that all my files are on the hard drive.
What should I do?

Thanks for the response, mende1!
Unfortunately, I also previously tried booting with the Shift key. Nothing. It acted like I wasn't even pressing the Shift key. I tried it multiple times. Sorry, I forgot to say that in my initial post.
I just tried the Option key and selected Macintosh HD (the only option). I still got the gray circle with the line though it.
I've already spent at least 30-40 hours installing all my software and transferring over all my pics and music. I can't "erase the disk and install OS X again".

hi all, i just upgraded my old imac and now im going to have the 27 inch 3.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7,with 1TB Fusion Drive
how will logic is going to work? is it much better than my old i3 21.5 imac? i didnt like to work with my old imac, was very laggy.
    thanks
    Arad.

Anything purchased after mid-July has EFI (like BIOS in PCs) that only likes Lion.   Maybe some up through mid-August could possibly run SL, but anyhing sold last week is Lion-only.
A very lucky few accidentally receive a SL-system when they buy new, but very few.

  • IMac late 2009 Quad core i7 Won't boot

Initially slow performance then within 2 weeks won't boot. Replaced hard drive. Installed new OS (Yosemite) from thumb drive. Same problem won't boot from new drive (SSD), stalls about 1/3 along time line. Installed old hard drive on another machine. Boots fine. What is going on?

  • Quad Core G5 Won't Boot

When starting up the screen has all sorts of strange dancing pixel things and when it gets past the grey Apple start up screen it just goes to a grey screen with the dancing pixels.
I've tried booting in safe mode and nothing happens.
I've tried booting to the install disc and nothing happens.
I've tried booting in verbose mode and it doesn't look like anything is wrong and nothing happens.
I've done the hardware test and it says everything is fine and it finds what is there and does all this with the crazy dancing pixels on the screen, it even shows all bootable drives.
    Any ideas?
Oh it does boot in Target Disk mode though.

    Hello, Ratz1
I would try using a really cheap graphics card. Do you still have the stock card, or is THAT the stock card? Also you may be able to use graphics cards from other Power Macs (Power Mac G4 and G3 B&W towers respectively) and install one of their cards granted it wont be high performance, however this should narrow it down to one component. If the problems go away, then its the graphics card. If the problems persist...well then I would start checkin other things...this is a G5 Quad, so with that being said I would check the liquid cooler for leaks and such. But as mentioned earlier by japamac, I highly doubt its a bad logic board. Its more than likely a bad GPU as these go bad fairly often. =/ Unfortunately. Hope this helps. =) Also, if you dont have any older Power Macs, see if anyone you know does, or you should be able to find the old technology on eBay or craigslist for even cheaper. But I would recommend performing these tasks prior to buyin a new GPU.
    Regards. =)

by looking at the specs the laptop is better but if your not a gamer or graphics designer  then you most likly wont notice a difference in the performance at all so with that said a few downsides
the processor is i5 the i7 processor is the better processor the graphics card has half the dedicated memory that the laptop has and the hdd compared to the solid state is not much of a difference unless you wanna move your computer all the time you wont need a solid state drive
but like i said before if your not a gamer or graphics designer on your computer you will not notice the difference most likely

  • Suitable ethernet cable for my new Imac 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 and old imac 1 GHZ PowerPC G4

I am looking for a Suitable ethernet cable for my new Imac 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 (Mavericks 10.9.4) & old imac 1 GHZ PowerPC G4 (10.4.11) for transfering files, documents, photos into my new intel mac from my old power PC imac.
Can anyone please advise me which suitable ethernet cable would be suitable for tasks.
    Many thanks
    Niall

Note, the iMac G4 1 Ghz only supports 10/100 base-T.  Firewire is up to 4 faster with a cable such as this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA833ZM/A/belkin-firewire-800400-9-pin6-pin-ca ble-2-m66-ft
    and adapted to this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
    http://www.macsales.com/ may offer cheaper cables.
And since you are migrating from a G4, be sure to make your files portable to newer data formats before transferring.  Old Appleworks/Clarisworks files are not compatible:

Yes, but it isn't easy. Read http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r27364872-iMac-CPU-Upgrade and the links in there before starting that project.

  • Looking at buying an 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 iMac.....NEED HELP!

Ok so I'm thinking about switching to Mac from PC and I need help. Here is what I plan on getting:
    3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
    2TB Serial ATA Drive
    AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5
    My questions are:
    1. How long has this configuration been out? i.e. how soon will Apple upgrade the iMac to better CPU and GUI?
    2. Can you add a SSD later?
    3. Without being able to add a New GUI (and other upgrades you can do with a PC) how long would this iMac last with the way technology advances?
    4. What problems if any are the iMac experiencing right now?

    jbrownlow wrote:
I guess I should rephrase the question. How long has the 3.4 i7 and AMD Radeon 6970M been available in the iMac? What I don't wont to do is get the 3.4 i7 and next week a 3.6 comes out etc. I read the same thing from http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/#iMac
This machine was released in May 2011. The configuration you are quoting is currently state of the art for an iMac. Without knowing how you use your computer it's extremely difficult to say how long it will be useful. If you are professional musician or filmmaker where you tax the CPU's capabilities then spending the money when a significantly faster machine is released should make little difference to you. However if use the machine for basics like surfing the web, e-mail and some MS Office work this machine is overkill now and will be for many years. If you use the machine primarily as a gaming platform then you would enjoy it as long as the GPU keeps up with your gaming demands.
So the question back to you is how do you intend to use the computer?

  • Exactly what 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core  i7 processor is shipped with an iMac 27 in?

exactly what 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core  i7 processor is shipped with an iMac 27 in? For numerical computation alone (no graphics), how does it compare with the Mac Pro 3.33GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon “Westmere”?
    thanks

From what I've read, it's the Core i7-2600. As to performance, if you do a web search for "iMac Core i7 3.4 benchmarks", you should find a lot of information.

  • The new iMac 21.5-inch Quad-Core Intel Core  i7, 3.1GHz, 8 GBSDRAM, 1 TB Fusion Drive, has Haswell processor inside ?

I want to buy for my new office, 2 pieces of iMac 21.5-inch Quad-Core Intel Core  i7, 3.1GHz
8 GBSDRAM, 1 TB Fusion Drive.
I wan to be sure 100%, that this model has inside the new fourth generation Haswell processor.
I don't find anywhere "Haswell" write in the specification.
    Please advice!

If it is a Late 2013 model it has the Haswell CPU. Right you won't but Apple only sells the latest models on the main Mac store website and all others, last year models, get move to the Refurbished area or are sold off to Apple store or Apple authorized resellers.

  • Late 2011 MacBook Pro 2.4GHz Quad-core Intel i7 Vs Latest Release

Hi Guys I own a 2011 2.4GHz Quad-core Intel i7, 8 gigs of ram and 500 SSD. I've a photographer and tether my camera to the computer to shoot. I feel the performance is good and everything is on order. Wondering if upgrading to the latest release if going to see a signifant change in performance. I generally don't edit on my laptop so not sure what the retna display does for me.
    Thanks!

    (1) On my three 10.9 Macs, upgrading did two very obvious things:
     • removed some useful features like the ability to set individual notification audio tones for different chat buddies and collaboration via iChat Theater.  (These features are not supported in OS X 10.9's Messages app that replaced iChat.)  There may be changes  I do not like in other apps, too, but these are two that I noticed.
      - and -
     • slowed my machines down as compared to OS X 10.8, particularly on booting, opening apps, and other CPU/System interactions.  The amount of slowing varied by machine, with my old 13" MBP being nearly unacceptable.  My i7 MBP is not nearly so bad, although the the difference is noticeable, perhaps 10% vs almost double boot time on my old 13".
    (2) To determine if upgrading will be a problem on your system, I suggest that you:
    • make a current Time Machine backup
    • configure  > System Preferences... > Time Machine to "OFF"
    • upgrade Mac OS
    • use your Mac long enough to see if you like the change
    (3) If you want to keep the upgrade, turn Time Machine backups back on and continue using the new OS.
    (4) If you don't like the upgrade, recover your system from your Time Machine backup.

Buying a new Macbook Pro. Deciding b/w this add on:
    2.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 vs.
    2.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7?
Is it worth the extra $250?
    What's the big difference? Thanks.

Upgrade RAM yourself through macsales.com for $60.  Use the remaining $140 of Apple's mmeory price and upgrade for $150 to hi-res (1680x1050) and anti-glare.  I never regretted that upgrade on mine.
    My humble opinion.
Sorry ... I just did the math and that puts you $10 out of pocket ...

  • Is iMac 27" (mid 2010) Quad-Core Intel Core i7   64-bit kernel ???

    Hello,
Sorry I'm not familiar with 64-bit term and would like to know is iMac 27" (mid 2010) Quad-Core Intel Core i7 a 64-bit processor and does it support in Mac OS X?? I'm confused as I from the Apple list "Mac OS X v10.6: Macs that use the 64-bit kernel" does not have latest iMac models. I plan to buy iMac 27" Core i7 for video editing and also like to know does Final Cut support 64-bit too. Appreciate all kind advise please.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
    it's in list...
These Macs *support the 64-bit kernel*, but do not use it by default.
    *iMac (Early 2008) and later*
MacBook Pro (Early 2008) and later
The keyword is "not by default"

I have followed all the online advice about settings under the Preferences/Performance interface, but nothing fixes the problem. Can anyone please help?
